TRAINIING
Read the Owner's Manual carefully. Bethoroughly familiar with the controls andthe proper use of the equipmenL Knowhow to stop the unit and disengage thecontrols quickly°
° Never allow children to operate theequipment. Never allow adults to oper-ate the equipment without properinstruction.
• Keep the area of operation clear of allpersons, particularly small children, andpets.
PREPARATION
o Thoroughly inspect the area where theequipment is to be used and remove allforeign objects.
o Disengage all clutches and shift intoneutral before starting the engine (mo -tor)_
• Do not operate the equipment withoutwearing adequate outer garments. Wearfootwear that will improve footing onslippery surfaces.
° Handle fuel with care; it is highly flarn-rnable.
° Use an approved fuel container.° Never add fuel to a running engine or
hot engine.o Fill fuel tank outdoors with extreme care.
Never fill fuel tank indoors.
° Replace gasoline cap securely andclean up spilled fuel before restarting_
o Use extension cords and receptacles asspecified by the manufacturer for allunits with electric drive motors or electricstarting motors.
o Never attempt to make any adjustmentswhile the engine (motor) is running(except where specifically recommend-ed by manufacturer).
OPERATION
• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts.
o Exercise extreme caution when operat-ing on or crossing gravel drives, walks,or roads. Stay alert for hidden hazardsor traffic. Do not carry passengers.
o After striking a foreign object, stop theengine (motor), remove the wire fromthe spark plug, thoroughly inspect thetiller for any damage, and repair thedamage before restarting and operatingthe tiller.
o Exercise caution to avoid slipping orfalling°
° tf the unit should start to vibrate abnor-mally, stop the engine (motor) and checkimmediately for the cause. Vibration isgenerally a warning of trouble.
o Stop the engine (motor) when leavingthe operating position.
o Take all possible precautions when leav-ing the machine unattended. Disengagethe tines, shift into neutral, and stop the
engine.o Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting,
shut off the engine and make certain allmoving parts have stopped, Disconnectthe spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the plug to prevent accidentalstarting. Disconnect the cord on electricmotors°
o Do not run the engine indoors; exhaustfumes are dangerous.
o Never operate the tiller without properguards, plates, or other safety protectivedevices in place.
° Keep children and pets away.o Do not overload the machine capacity
by attempting to till too deep at too fast arate.
o Never operate the machine at highspeeds on slippery surfaces. Lookbehind and use care when backing.
o Never allow bystanders near the unit.. Use only attachments and accessories
approved by the manufacturer of thetiller..
o Never operate the tiller without good vis-ibility or light.
o Be careful when tilling in hard ground.The tines may catch in the ground andpropel the tiller forward. If this occurs,let go of the handlebars and do notrestrain the machine°
MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE
° Keep machine, attachments, andaccessories in safe working condition.
• Check shear pins, engine mountingbolts, and other bolts at frequent inter-vals for proper tightness to be sure theequipment is in safe working condition.
. Never store the machine with fuel in the
fuel tank inside a building where ignitionsources are present, such as hot waterand space heaters, clothes dryers, andthe like. Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure.
• Always refer to the operator's guideinstructions for important details if thetiller is to be stored for an extended peri-od.

o Hold the drive control bar against thehandle to start filler movement. Tineswill not turn.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE
IMPORTANT: Be very careful not to allowdirt to enter the engine when checking oradding oil or fuel. Use clean oil and fueland store in approved, clean, covered con-tainers. Use clean fill funnels.
CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL
° The engine in your unit has beenshipped, from the factory,, already filledwith SAE 30 summer weight oil.
• With engine level, clean area around oilfiller plug and remove plug.
° Engine oil should be to point of overflow-ing when engine is level. For approxi-mate capacity see "PRODUCT SPECI-FICATIONS" on page 4 of this manual.All oil must meet A.P.I. ServiceClassification SF, SG or SH.
• For cold weather operation you shouldchange oil for: easier starting (See oilviscosity chart in the Maintenance sec-tion of this manual).
° To change engine oil, see theMaintenance section in this manual.

unleaded gasoline. (Use of leadedgasoline will increase carbon and leadoxide deposits and reduce valve life.
IMPORTANT: When operating in tempera-tures below 32°F (0°C), use fresh, clean,winter grade gasoline to help insure goodC_dAweather starting.
RNING: Experience indicates thatalcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage, Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should beemptied before storage of 30 days orlonger. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel nextseason. See Storage section of this man-ual for additional information_ Never use
engine or carburetor cleaner products inthe fuel tank or permanent damage mayoccur.

,_CAUTION: Fill to within 1/2 inch of topof fuel tank to prevent spills and to allowfor fuel expansion_ If gasoline is acciden-tally spilled, move machine away fromarea of spill Avoid creating any source ofignition until gasoline vapors have disap-peared.Do not overfill. Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.
TO START ENGINE
.4{&CAUTION: Keep tine control in "OFF"position when starting engine°When starting engine for the first time or ifengine has run out of fuel, it will take extrapulls of the recoil starter to move fuel fromthe tank to the engine.o Make sure spark plug wire is properly
connected and access cover is com-
pletely closed to create proper seal.o Move shift lever indicator to "N" (neutral)
position.• Place throttle control in "FAST" position.o Turn fuel shut-off valve to "ON" position.o Push stop switch to "ON" positiono Move choke control to full "CHOKE"
position. Grasp recoil starter handle withone hand and grasp tiller handle withother hands Pull rope out slowly untilengine reaches start of compressioncycle (rope will pull slightly harder at thispoint).
° Pull recoil starter handle quickly. Do notlet starter handle snap back againststarter. Repeat if necessary.

,_CAUTION: Until you are accustomed tohandling your tiller, start actual field usewith throttle in slow position (mid-waybetween "FAST" and "IDLE")o• Tilling is digging into, turning over, and
breaking up packed soil before planting.Loose, unpacked soil helps root growth.Best tilling depth is 4" to 6". A tiller willalso clear the soil of unwanted vegeta-tion. The decomposition of this veg-etable matter enriches the soil.
Depending on the climate (rainfall andwind), it may be advisable to till the soilat the end of the growing season to fur-ther condition the soil.
o Soil conditions are important for propertilling. Tines wil! not readily penetratedry, hard soil which may contribute toexcessive bounce and difficult handlingof your tiller. Hard soil should be mois-tened before tilling; however, extremelywet soil will "ball-up" or clump during till-ing. Wait until the soil is less wet in orderto achieve the best results. When tillingin the fall, remove vines and long grassto prevent them from wrapping aroundthe tine shaft and slowing your tillingoperation.
o You will find tilling much easier if youleave a row untilled between passes.Then go back between tilled rows. Thereare two reasons for doing this° First,wide turns are much easier to negotiatethan about-faces. Second, the tillerwon't be pulling itself, and you, towardthe row next to it.
o Do not lean on handle. This takes
weight off the wheels and reduces trac-tion.

To get through a really tough sectionofsod or hard ground,apply upward pres-sure on handle or lower the depth stake.
CULTIVATING
Cultivating is destroying the weedsbetween rows to prevent them from rob-bing nourishment and moisture from theplants. At the same time, breaking up theupper layer of soil crust will help retainmoisture in the soil. Best digging depth is1" to 3" (2.5-7.5 cm). Lower the outer sideshields to protect small plants from beingbuded,
• Cultivate up and down the rows at aspeed which will al!ow tines to uprootweeds and leave the ground in roughcondition, promoting no further growth ofweeds and grass,

TINE SHEAR PiNS
The tine assemblies on your tiller aresecured to the tine shaft with shear pins(See "TINE REPLACEMENT" in theService and Adjustments section of thismanual).If the tiller is unusually overloaded orjammed, the shear pins are designed tobreak before internal damage occurs tothe transmission.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The warranty on this tiller does not coveritems that have been subjected to opera-tot abuse or negligence. To receive fullvalue from the warranty, the operator mustmaintain tiller as instructed in this manual.
Some adjustments will need to be madeperiodically to properly maintain your tiller.All adjustments in the Service andAdjustments section of this manual shouldbe checked at least once each season.
• Once a year you should replace thespark plug, clean or replace air filter, andcheck tines and belts for wear. A new
spark plug and clean air filter assureproper air-fuel mixture and help yourengine run better and last longer.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W-30, 10W-30, etc.) improve starting in coldweather; these multi-viscosity oils willresult in increased oil consumption whenused above 32°F (0°C). Check yourengine oil level more frequently to avoidpossible engine damage from running lowon oil.Change the oil after every 50 hours ofoperation or at least once a year if the tilleris not used for 50 hours in one year:Check the crankcase oil level before start-
ing the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. Add SAE 30
motor oil or equivalent. Tighten oil fillerplug securely each time you check the oillevel.
TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL
Determine temperature range expectedbefore oil change. All oil must meet APIservice classification SF, SG or SH.o Be sure tiller is on level surface.
- Oil will drain more freely when warm.= Use a funnel to prevent oil spill on tiller,
and catch oil in a suitable container.
Remove drain plug.• Tip tiller forward to drain oil.• After oil has drained completely, replace
oil drain plug and tighten securely.° Remove oil filler plug. Be careful not to
allow dirt to enter the engine.
• Refill engine with oil. See "CHECKENGINE OIL LEVEL" in the Operatioqsection of this manual.

Your engine will not run propedy using adirty air filter: Clean the foam pre-cleanerafter every 50 hours of operation or everyseason. Service paper cartridge every100 hours of operation or every season,whichever occurs first°

ENGINE
FUEL SYSTEMIMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essential fuelsystem parts such as the carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.also, experience indicates that alcoholbtended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract moisturewhich leads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas can dam-age the fuel system of an engine while instorage.o Drain the fuel tank.
= Start the engine and let it run until thefuel lines and carburetor are empty.
o Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.
o Use fresh fuel next season.
NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation offue! gum deposits during storage. Add sta-bilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storagecontainer, Always follow the mix ratiofound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least I0 minutes after adding stabilizerto allow the stabilizer to reach the carbure-tor, Do net drain the gas tank and carbu-retor if using fuel stabilizer.

° Para la operaci6n en clima fdo, debecambiarse el aceite para facilitar elarranque (vea la "TABLA DE VISCOSI-DAD DELACEITE" en la secci6n deMantenimiento en este manual).

AGREGUE GASOLINA• Ltene el estanque de combustible. Use
gasolina regular, sin plomo, nueva ylimpia. (El uso de gasolina con p!omoaumentar_ los dep6sitos de 6xido deplomo y carbono y se reducir_ laduraci6n de la vdlvula.)
IMPORTANTE: Cuando se opere en temper-aturas por debajo de 32°F (0°C) usegasolina de calidad de invierno, limpia ynueva para ayudar a asegurar un buenarranque en clima frio.ADVERTENCIA: La experiencia ha indica-do que los combustibles mezclados conalcohol (conocidos como gasohol, o el usode etanol o metanol) pueden atraer lahumedad, la que conduce a la separaci6ny formaci6n de Acidos durante el almace-namiento. La gasolina acidica puededafiar el sistema del combustible de unmotor durante el almacenamiento. Paraevitar problemas con el motor, se debevaciar el sistema de combustible antesde guardarlo por un periodo de 30 dfaso m_s. Vacie el estanque de combustible,haga arrancar el motor y h&galo funcionarhasta que las lfneas del combustible y elcarburador queden vacias. La pr6ximatemporada use combustible nuevo. Cuando este empezando un motor por laprimera vez o si el motor se ha quedadosin gasolina, ser_ necesario varios inten-tos para mover la gasolina desde elestanque al motor.
• Asegt_rese que el atambre de ta bujiaeste conectado en forma adecuada yque la v_lvula de cierre de ta gasolinaeste abierta.
o Ponga la palanca de cambio a la posi-ci6n de (NEUTRO) N.
• Gire la v,_lvuta de cierre de gasofina a laposiciSn de 'ENCENDIDO" "ON"_
o Empuje el interruptor de parada a laposici6n de "ENCENDIDO" "ON".
o Agarre el mango del arrancador de cula-teo con una mano y el mango de la culti-vadora con la otra mano. Tire el cord6nhacia afuera, lentamente, hasta que elmotor legue al comienzo del ciclo de tacompresi6n (el cord6n se sentir_, unpoco mas duro en este momento)o
o Tire el mango del arrancador de culateor&pidamente. No permita que el mangodel arrancador se devuelva abrupta-mente en contra del arrancador. Vuelvaa repetir, si to es necessarioo

MOTOREl mantenimiento, la reparaci6n, o el oreemplazo de cualquier dispositivos o sis-temas del control de la emisi6n, los cuales osean hechos al costo del cliente, puedenset realizados pot cualquier individuo oestablecimiento de reparaci6n de motor.
AJUSTE FINAL
Haga arrancar el motor y permita que secaliente por cinco rninutos.
Con la palanca de control de la acel-er'aci6n en la posici6n de "LENTO"(SLOW).
Los reparos que caen bajo garantfa deben AJUSTE DE LAS RPM EN VAC[Oser tealizados por un establecimiento deservicio de reparaci6n de motor autoriza-do.
PARA AJUSTAR EL CABLE DE CON-TROL DE LA ACELERACION
• Suette el tornillo de sujeci6n del cablepara permitir que el cable se mueva.
o Mueva la palanca de control de la acel-eraci6n en el mango superior a la posi-ci6n de "RAPIDO" (FAST).
o Tire el cable de la aceleraci6n haciaafuera hasta el extremo final.
° Sujete el cable en esta posici6n y apri-ete el tornitlo de sujeci6n en forma segu-ra.

La gasolina acidicapuede da5ar el sistema de combustible deun motor durante el periodo de almace-namiento.° Drene el estanque de combustible., Haga arrancar el motor y d6jelo fun-
