thetilburginstituteforlaw,technology,andsociety(tilt)celebratesits20thanniversary!Alothaschangedduringtilt’slifetime.whathasremainedthoughistilt’stypicalcultureofsolidarity,warmrelationshipsamongtheteammembersandbeingpreparedtostandinforeachotherifneedsbe-withoutanydoubtthecornerstonesoftilt’ssuccess.thissuccesshasmaterializedintheoutstandingratingsofbothtilt’sresearchandteachingprogrammesinvariousnationalandinternationalassessments.wedonotjustcelebrateour20thanniversary;weareproudtocelebrate20yearsofexcellence!

tiltstartedoperatingin1994asacentreforresearchintolawandinformationtechnologyledbyProf.CorienPrinsatthetilburglawschool.Alreadywithinafewyears,thecentrebegantoexpand.Aroundthestartofthenewmillenniumthescopeoftheresearchwasbroadened,sothattheregulationofemergingtechnologies,suchasneuro-,bio-andnanotechnology,wasincluded.themultidisciplinaryapproach,alreadypresentatthestart,wasfurtherincreasedbytheinvolvementofethicists,philosophers,socialscientists,engineers,andscienceandtechnologystudiesresearchers.

Currently,tiltisaninternationalteamof30staffmemberswithenglishasworkinglanguage.inadditionthereareapproximately20externalPhdresearchersandguestlecturers.eachyear,morethan50studentsfromthenetherlandsandabroadfindtheirwaytotilt’sgraduateprogrammeoflawandtechnology.

intheyearstocome,tiltwillembarkonnewactivities.itwillgoontoinnovateitsteachingbothongraduateandonpostgraduatelevels.itwillexpanditsresearchactivitiesinthedomainsofcareandwell-being,cybersecurity,androbotics.itwillalsostarttoexperimentwithnewcollaborativeactivitieswithrelevantpartnerinstitutesattilburguniversityandelsewhereandwithprivatepartners.
