Opera & Music
Opera Opera Lafayette An Incomplete Education Une Éducation Manquée Fri, Feb 5 & Sat, Feb 6 at 7:30pm Pre-performance discussion at 6:30pm in Tinker Auditorium Count Gontran, a young teen, is well-versed in Greek and metaphysics, but he is woefully unprepared for his wedding night. He and his bride turn to relatives and mentors in frantic search of a coup de foudre to spark their romance in this opéra-comique by composer Emmanuel Chabrier. FIAF is delighted to welcome 18th-century French opera specialists Opera Lafayette back to Florence Gould Hall with this charming production featuring period instruments and a superlative cast.
Concert Reading La Reina Sun, Jan 17 at 5pm Music by Jorge Sosa Libretto by Laura Sosa Pedroza & Jorge Sosa Conducted by David Alan Miller Get an early look at a powerful new opera in development, inspired by some of the real-life players in the violent drug war taking place in Mexico and the United States. Telling the story of drug queen-pin Regina, La Reina takes a turn for the fantastic when the patron saint of drug dealers, La Santa Muerte, answers her prayers and forces her to take a look back at the choices that have shaped her life. Presented as part of PROTOTYPE Festival Commissioned and co-presented as part of InsightALT by American Lyric Theater, Lawrence Edelson, Producing Artistic Director
This year, get swept up in the music! FIAF has partnered with leading New York cultural institutions to present a season of work by some of today’s most gifted musicians. Discover traditional French opera on an intimate scale with Opera Lafayette’s production of the Chabrier classic Une Education Manquée; catch a brand new opera in a special concert performance of La Reina, part of PROTOTYPE Festival and American Lyric Theater's InsightALT series; and get up-close to Opéra de Paris's stunning production of Faust in an HD screening. In April, take a behind-the-scenes look at Patrice Chéreau’s Elektra; and in May, hear a tribute to French composer Tristan Murail conducted by Michel Galante. Plus, this spring hear the pioneers of French electronic music at CinéSalon. See p. 18 for the full lineup.

Opera & Music
HD Opera Screening Opéra de Paris The Damnation of Faust Thu, Jun 9 at 7pm Co-presented with Opéra de Paris in association with the American Friends of the Paris Opera & Ballet.
Straight from the Opéra de Paris, this HD screening captures every detail of Alvis Hermanis’ stunning production of The Damnation of Faust, which premiered in December 2015. This visually arresting new staging brings out the theatricality in Hector Berlioz’s masterpiece, composed as a result of his lifelong obsession with Goethe’s story about a man who sells his soul to the devil.
Concert Argento Chamber Ensemble Spectralism in America: Objets Trouvés Thu, May 19 at 7:30pm New York’s premiere virtuoso chamber ensemble presents a night dedicated to the legacy of French composer Tristan Murail. A pioneer of spectralism—a prominent movement in contemporary classical music that arose in 1970s France—Murail influenced a generation of composers in his mesmerizing style of early electronic music. The group will celebrate Murail’s incredible contributions to the musical landscape, performing works by the composer and his New York protégés.
Genius director Patrice Chéreau didn’t live to see his great production of Elektra, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme in the title role of a young woman on a primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. The drama unfolds in a single act of rare vocal and orchestral power. In advance of Elektra’s Met premiere, Met General Manager Peter Gelb will moderate a discussion with Stemme and two of Chéreau’s long-time collaborators, set designer Richard Peduzzi and stage director Vincent Huguet.
Talk at FIAF Discovering Chéreau’s Elektra at the Metropolitan Opera Wed, Apr 6 at 7pm Co-presented with the Metropolitan Opera in association with the International Friends of the International Lyric Art Festival Aix-en-Provence.
