PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It has been a difficult start to the term for our school community with the passing of Andy and Ross Powell. Both Andy and Ross have been significant contributors to our school and they have provided learning opportunities for our students and encouraged them at all times. The school community wishes to express our deepest condolences to the family and I know there have been many students and staff who have been impacted as a result of this tragedy. I encourage any members of the community if they are struggling at this time to reach out for help. Andy was a former student of Timboon P-12 School and a regular presenter at the school as part of the TAP program. Many staff and students had connections with Andy through TAP, as well as the Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club. Ross and Andy were high achievers in the farming industry and were heavily involved in volunteer organisations. Our school Anzac commemoration, held on April 26, was a highlight of 2019. Each year our student leaders plan and deliver a commemoration that truly signifies the respect and solemnity that this day holds for all Australians. I was incredibly proud of our school leaders, and the entire student community, for the manner in which they conducted this assembly. All Timboon students can be proud of their participation and their reverence on this day. Our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will sit NAPLAN tests in the coming weeks. Again, NAPLAN provides the school with a snapshot of your child’s progress that teachers can use to assist them in setting appropriate tasks and to challenge your child to achieve at their next level. As a school, we use it to examine our strengths and weaknesses as a cohort. This allows us as teachers to ensure that we challenge ourselves, as well as our students, to improve. NAPLAN at Year 3, 5, 7 and Year 9 also represents a real opportunity for our students to sit state-wide testing. These are two significant opportunities for students to evaluate themselves against state-wide data. Their next opportunity will be in Year 12 VCE. For this reason, students should strive to complete these tests at their absolute best. They should be able to look back in pride at how well they performed, compared to their peers across the country. Please encourage your child to do their best. What a brilliant community we live in! Our school ovals have been impacted during the building renovations that have taken place over the last few years so they were in much need of some TLC. Thanks to Glenn Cain and Webber & Chivell Fertilisers from Cobden. The ovals were given an application of a complete fertiliser blend over the school holidays. Tim and Bronwyn Lenehan provided a bag of Award perennial rye grass which was sown in by Michael Lynne Contracting on a tractor driven by Ben Newey, ably assisted by Zack Lenehan. It's great to see our fantastic Timboon community spirit in action as Bronwyn, Michael and Ben are all ex Timboon P-12 School students and Zack a current student. Just waiting for rain to see it grow. On Wednesday we had our cross country for the Primary and Secondary students. It was great to see so many students enjoying going for a run and getting some physical exercise on such a beautiful day. Thank you to all the parents that attended and supported the event. I enjoyed running the course with the students and the challenge is out there to beat me next year . On Thursday the 2nd we held our Timboon on display night. This evening was an opportunity for Year 5 and 6 students from Timboon and other schools to have a look at our wonderful school and all the programs on offer. Can I thank all the staff and students who were present on the night for their contribution. Very shortly parents will be provided with forms to complete regarding continued enrolment at Timboon for Year 7. Well done to all the Year 7 students on their participation on camp at the end of last term. I was lucky enough to attend for one day and it was great to see the kids getting involved and supporting each other in the activities. I should say to the Year 7 students that their mini- golf skills need to improve and Mr Reid

still holds the record for the most ‘holes in one’. Well done to all the staff who attended the camp and in particular Mr Nigel Mottram for his organisation of this event. The Official opening of the redevelopment of Timboon P -12 is on 17th May starting at 9.30. The Hon. Gayle Tierney MLC, Minister of Training and Skills and Minister of Higher Education will be officially opening the buildings at 9.30. Parents, former students and members of the public are welcome to attend this event and celebrate the new school we have and to recognise all of the hard work by members of the school community. DAVIN REID Principal

Dear Parents, this is the last printed newsletter for students to take home. It is uploaded to Compass and our Website. Extra copies will be available in the school office.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS

My deepest sympathies and condolences go to the Powell family. Words and thoughts aren’t enough to express the sympathy and empathy we have for you all at this time. In the coming weeks if any students feel that they need further support we have the capacity to do so. Please call the school and ask for your child’s coordinator and discuss what support may be needed. We will work together to ensure the ongoing support of your child. This week we welcome our future Year 7 students to the Secondary school. On Thursday approximately 50 Year 6 students will start the transition to their secondary education with a taste of Timboon P-12. Students will participate in a broad range of activities from leadership development, academic subjects such as History and Science as well as hands on activities in Food, PE and Art. All students will be supplied with a barbecue lunch. Congratulations to the 16 Timboon P-12 students who swam at the state titles last week. An amazing effort due to ongoing hard work by our students and families to compete at an elite level. Thanks also to the parents of students who attended and helped to represent our school and community. Thanks to Mr Mottram and all staff involved in the Year 7 camp in last week of Term 1. This term has seen a smooth start for our Year 7 students and speaks volumes of the shared experience and strengthening of relationships that occur as a result of camps. Currently our Year 12 students are working towards the completion of Unit 3 of their courses. I would encourage all Year 12 students undertaking exams this year to start looking at the exams via the VCAA website and revising the content they have been taught thus far. Terms two and three are central to setting yourself up for success later in the year. The more you can start to practise and revise your knowledge the better position you will be in to perform to your potential in not only school based assessments but also the external exams. To further support this there will be a practice GAT on Tuesday May 21st from 8.45. This will be for all students completing a scored unit 3 and 4 VCE subject. This includes students in Year 11 completing these subjects either here at school or via Distance. As the weather cools down it is important students have the correct uniform to stay warm. Students are asked not to wear hoodies and non-school beanies and to be consistently in the correct uniform. If there is an issue with your child being in uniform please send a note to their coordinator along with your child. If any parents can support us with a working bee on Sunday 12 May it would be greatly appreciated. We’ll start at 8.30 and work through to 10.30 with morning tea provided. This is in preparation for our official school opening on Friday 17 May. DAN WALKER 7-12 Assistant Principal

Cross Country What a wonderful day. Congratulations to all competitors, in particular those from the winning house, Halladale. It was so pleasing to see the students giving their all and thankyou to the parents and supporters who came along for the event. The next level is on Friday 10th May, at the Noorat Rec Reserve. More sport to come Friday 3rd May is the Division level in Athletics. Best of luck to our team: Kurtis Baker, Ruby Barwise, Riley Beames, Finn Castledine, Caius Cuthell, Jarrod Ferguson, Zalia Hanegraaf, Jasper Makin, Molly Mansbridge, Ruby Pender and Stella Smith. Mr Venn will be attending to support the team. For parents of these students, please note that in the event of inclement weather an announcement will be made on Coast FM, MIX FM and 3HA between 8:00am and 8:30am on the morning of the event. Thursday 9th May, Year 5 and 6 students have been invited to attend a Soccer COPPS program, from 12.30 until 2.30 at the Warrnambool Wolves Club, in Warrnambool. The event is not just for soccer players. It is just a skills day with a positive interaction with local and metro police officers that are trained in soccer. We have spare seats on the bus if more students in Year 5 and 6 want to join in. Please speak to Mrs Delaney on Monday. Cost is $12. Year 5 and 6 students have been putting their names down to try out for the Tri-Sports games, held on Friday 31st May. The sports are Netball, Football and Soccer. Students will be practising these during sport and PE over the next few weeks. Please note, that this is an annual event, so to ensure all students are given an opportunity to participate, Year 6s are given preference. NAPLAN The Year 3 and 5 students will be involved in NAPLAN from Tuesday 14th May, through to Friday 24th May. Below is the schedule. It is really important that all Year 3 and 5 students are in attendance over this fortnight. The data is widely used by the school, so we need full participation please.

Somers Camp Congratulations to Nathan Ellemor, Leevi Golden, Connor Egan, Isaac McKenzie, Sophie Jephcott, Sadie McDonald, Thea Vogels, Huon Glenndinning and Charlie Bowker. These students were selected randomly from those who expressed interest in attending. Mr Venn has also been asked to attend and is excited to once again be part of the Somers Camp staff. Students will head off on Tuesday 21st May and return on Wednesday 29th May.

Classroom Helpers Information session A brief classroom helpers’ information session was held on Monday. It was a great turnout, and I want to thank the parents for giving up the time to support the program. Having parent helpers in the room supports the students with their learning and engagement, supports the teacher on many levels, and importantly helps create links between home and school for all students. If you want to be part of it, please speak to your child’s teacher, or Mrs Berry (Teaching and Learning leader across P-2). Hats policy Reminder that April 30th was the final day that it is compulsory for all students to wear a hat outside. This does not mean we don’t encourage the wearing of hats, but it is no longer compulsory to have a hat on when outside. Oval TLC A huge thankyou to Bronwyn Lenehan and Andrea Vallance for organising some TLC for our ovals. Thanks to Glenn Cain and Webber & Chivell Fertilisers from Cobden the ovals were fertilized and direct sewn, with the seed being supplied by Tim and Bronwyn Lenehan. THANKYOU! Milky the Cow The Year 3 and 4 students have done an unreal job at presenting another TAP, Healthy diets and activities inspired cow. A huge thankyou to all students for their wonderful ideas and commitment to getting the cow presented. It has been a big team effort by the 3-4 staff, with support from our Art expert, Mrs Mackieson. Well done team – it looks FANTASTIC.

P-6 Assembly Please note that next week’s P-6 Assembly will be held on Wednesday morning, instead of Monday. Mrs Delaney’s class will be running the assembly and all parents, family and friends are invited to attend. GILL HAMPSON

Cross Country 2019 Last Tuesday saw the running of the 2019 Timboon P-12 Cross Country. Congratulations to all the participants on completing the gruelling race. It was fabulous to see so many students giving it their absolute best. Below is a list of the age group winners. The top six competitors in the 8/9 year olds, 10 year olds, 11 year olds and 12/13 year old age group have qualified to run in the District Cross Country to be held in Noorat on May 10th. It was great to see so many of the students supporting their houses by dressing in house colours. All competitors earned points for their house. The winning house this year is Halladale, followed closely by Callaway and Narragoort. The Sam Cunnington Personal Best trophy was won this year by Max Rantall. This award is given to a student who is seen to be doing their absolute best; displaying excellent sportsmanship and making an outstanding effort. Congratulations Max! Thank you to all the parents who came along to support this event and cheer the students on.

Form Assembly Reading New Compass notification to parents

Parents of students in Years 7-11 are asked to talk with their teenagers about what they are reading each morning during Form Assembly. As of this term, a notification appears on Compass alerting parents if their son or daughter does not fulfil their obligation to bring a text to read at the start of each day. You will notice on your son or daughter’s Compass Dashboard under the heading Student Chronicle, an entry category titled Book; an entry will appear under this category if your child does not bring a text to Form Assembly. Year 12 students are not part of the program as Form Assembly is dedicated to curriculum-based discussions. Parental support for reading Research reveals that regular reading improves vocabulary. Parents can support this important literacy initiative by engaging in discussions about what genres their teenagers like to read and by asking them to explain the plot and characters at the centre of their current book. Parents can also help by promoting reading as a vital workplace skill and life-long source of enjoyment. Academic House reading challenge Form Assembly reading is now an academic House challenge with a shield awarded to the most successful team each term. By bringing a book to Form Assembly, students gain points for their House; failing to bring a book results in points being deducted. Choosing the right book Choosing the right book – one that suits your teenager’s interests and reading level – is also an important part of this initiative. Students choose their own reading material, however, Year 11 students are encouraged to use the Form Assembly reading time to hone their knowledge and understanding of the novels they are studying in English. Students in Years 7-10 have access to the library each week during English and receive guidance about finding a book that constitutes a good fit. Reading strategies - Monitoring Our Year 7-10 students are also being taught evidence-based reading strategies during English to maximise their ability to comprehend the world of the text they are reading and to extend their vocabulary. The first key comprehension strategy being taught is ‘monitoring’. Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey and Diane Lapp in their text, Reading State of Mind, explain that monitoring “is the capacity of a reader to notice while reading whether a text is making sense or not. Monitoring is a habit for effective readers; we tend to know right away when a text is not making sense. Most readers have had the experience of reading along and suddenly realising that they have no idea what they just read. This may be because they are tired (reading too late at night in bed, for example) or because the text is simply too difficult. In addition, the reader might have encountered some of the following:

New words or known words that do not make sense in

context.

Sentences that are vague, ambiguous, or inconsistent with

background knowledge.

Paragraphs in which relationships are unclear, conflicting, or

connected in several possible ways.

The difference between skilled and struggling readers is in what they do when comprehension is compromised. Skilled readers do not simply notice that they have lost the meaning. They also have plans for fixing up their comprehension.” Sheena Cameron’s text titled Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies summarises self-monitoring as “…the student’s ability to:

Be aware when meaning breaks down.

Identify what it is they don’t understand (word, sentence,

paragraph).

Use appropriate strategies to restore meaning.”

Page 5: Timboon P-12 Newsletter · announcement will be made on Coast FM, MIX FM and 3HA between 8:00am and 8:30am on the morning of the event. Thursday 9th May, Year 5 and 6 students have

To restore this meaning, we are teaching students to apply techniques such as rereading, checking the meaning of words, adjusting their reading rate, tracking their thinking and visualising. Please ask your teenager to tell you about how they apply monitoring to their reading. Thank you for your support. Leonie Wallace Leading Literacy

Prepping for calves After acknowledging the role that Andy Powell played in the TAP, the Cows Create Careers (CCC) unit, and in our SW community, and challenging students to follow his lead, we prepared to host calves as part of the Dairy Australia CCC competition. WestVic Dairy Chair and dairy farmer, Simone Renyard, joined former student and local dairy farmer, Peter Fulton, as they described their respective career pathways and dairy operations. An inspection of the new calf site ensued with students describing their understanding of what calves needed to stay healthy and thrive. Back in the classroom the calves’ names were voted on and students began their projects ably supported by our industry representatives, including Simone’s daughter Laura. Thank you to everyone concerned.

Topping it up What a brilliant community we live in! Picture below is the work in progress, as described on page one by Mr Reid. Thanks to our

fertilising team for their work on the school ovals over the holidays.

Milky is almost ready to join our herd! Year 3/4 spent last term designing and painting Milky the Cow. As well as the fun of painting, students learnt about healthy diets with a focus on dairy food and strong bones. We enjoyed a visit from Diana, who taught us about the five food groups and we planned healthy meals. Heidi visited us and brought a variety of dairy products for us to sample. We had fun trying to match the food to its name and our vocabulary was tested as we described the foods we tried. We invented our own dairy products and designed the packaging. We used our maths skills to work out which foods would give us our daily allowance of calcium. And so much more! Designing and painting the cow was the highlight of this unit of work. It was a big job to incorporate all the ideas of the students and to settle on the final design. Everyone had a chance to paint and the enthusiasm of the students was fantastic. This has been a community project with help from many people. Thank you to the many teachers who offered suggestions and supervised the artwork. A big thankyou to Sarah Mackieson who allowed us to take over her art room and whose support and help was much appreciated.

Thank you to Dairy Australia who supplied the fibreglass cow, without which the program would not have been possible. A big thank you to Martin’s Hardware who generously supplied all the paint for this incredible project. Thank you to Timboon Motors who will two-pack the cow making her shiny and weather proof. These businesses provided their services free of charge and their support has made this project possible. Lastly thank you to the students. Your ideas, your designs and your skill with the paintbrush has made this project an enjoyable and valuable learning experience for all involved. The 3/4 Team

Years 3 and 4 Writing Divine ANZAC Biscuits By Willow We make ANZAC biscuits each year to remember the soldiers. They are often rough as rocks and taste delicious. They were sent to soldiers from family and friends. ANZAC By Kai Men in the army fought for Australia’s freedom. 130,000 died in the army. They stopped the war and buried their dead and then left the land. The Best ANZAC Biscuits By Ruby J I was amazed how good the ANZAC biscuits were. The families made biscuits for the people in their family who went to war. ANZAC biscuits are brown as bark off a tree.

Crunchy ANZAC Biscuits By Tahli We make ANZAC biscuits to remember the people who fought in the war so we don’t forget and we celebrate ANZAC day every year.
