’Tis the season to DAZZLE! If one of your resolutions for

2015 is to be organized in your life, make sure to include

your work environment!

Have you ever noticed how appealing the product

displays look when you visit specialty stores and cosmetic

counters? The next time you get a chance, take a look at

the way things are organized in Bath and Body Works or

the body care section in Victoria’s Secret. Everything looks

inviting. All those goodies are begging to be purchased.

Have you ever really examined the cosmetic counter in a

department store? The mirrors are CLEAN, the tester areas

are TIDY, everything is nicely displayed and in order.

BE THE GUEST Stand behind the chair for a few minutes

and then have a seat and take it all in. When you are sitting

in your styling chair facing the mirror you are seeing it the

way your guest does! There are two areas of interest for

your guest to check out during their service. 1. Your guest

can watch you while you are working and talking. 2. Your

guest can see everything on your station—the good and

the not so good!

PUT THE SHINE ON YOUR STATION Are you taking the

time to tidy your area between guests? Some days are flat

out wild in the salon. But no matter what, your work area

should not be covered in hair. Make sure to wipe hair off

the chair and sweep around your station between each

guest. Hair should be swept and the clippings are to be

stored in a closed container. Your guests do not want to

wade through hair clippings or be seated in a hair covered

chair. We as stylists seem to take our hairy environment

for granted. The public does not see it the way we see it.

Good teamwork can help tackle floor hair challenges. Take

a minute and sweep for your neighbor while you are at it!

TIME TO SHINE!THE MIRROR Is your mirror clean? It should always be

spotless. Remove old tape that may be there from previous

promotions. Clean the entire mirror, not just an oval in

front of your chair. And don’t forget the hand mirror—it

should be spotless too! Think back to the department store

image. Ever see a smudged mirror there?

cORdS Are all your tool cords organized and tidy? Untangle

jumbled cords and make sure they off the floor to avoid

accidents.

STYLING TOOLS Are your cutting and styling tools tucked

away, out of site and/or in proper storage trays? Barbicide

jars are not designed to store combs. They are used to

disinfect combs. Barbicide is a poison used to kill harmful

organisms. Rinse combs after submersion, wash, dry and

store in a closed drawer or closed container. Ziploc bags

are great for separating sanitized items from used combs

and brushes. If you must arrange your clipper guards on

a towel, make sure the towel is changed after each guest.

Are you sanitizing and submersing your clipper guards in

barbicide or spraying them with clippercide regularly?

PROdUcT Do you have only Fantastic Sams brand products

displayed on your station? Does your station look like a

professional work area? Did you know that it is a policy at

Fantastic Sams to have only our brand on your stations?

It’s okay to use other approved products as long as you

keep them away from your counter when not in use. Having

continuity at each station is more pleasing to the eye.

NO fLUff, jUST STYLING STUff! Family and pet photos

should be placed in a small photo album and not taped to

your mirror. Education certificates and licenses should be

in frames and not taped to your mirror. Some salons have

created a “wall of fame” in a designated spot in the salon

to display framed education certificates. Keep clutter to a

minimum on your station.

SPARKLE TIME Do your product bottles look like you just

took them off the shelf? Keep your working product bottles

super clean. They have a tendency to get coated with the

resins they contain and then everything else sticks to them,

including hair clippings. You don’t want to be pitching an

awesome product to a guest and then hand them a sticky

bottle. It’s unappealing and can mar your presentation.

Your product bottles should look pristine. Would you want

the lady at your favorite cosmetic counter to present you

with a gummy, smudged tester? Wouldn’t you wonder if it

is sanitary?

Use your own experience as a customer to see how things

should look. Pay attention to your surroundings when you

are out shopping and running errands. Make note of what

you encounter. It will help you learn how to raise the level of

customer service you are providing for your guests.

Owned by Joyce and Del Gorski • Opened 9/28/1991

Airport Blvd. in Mobile, Alabama

The Airport Blvd. salon in Mobile, Alabama, opened

September 28, 1991. It is one of three salons owned by Del

and Joyce Gorski. The salon’s shopping center is currently

undergoing a 10 million dollar renovation, which will

include some amazing new tenants (like Whole Foods). Not

only is the shopping center undergoing a renovation, but

the salon is as well! It is currently in the midst of a complete

face-lift!

What doesn’t need to be overhauled is the Airport Blvd.

team. Owner Joyce said of her stylists, “We have a wonderful

staff here. Our manager Glenda Willcutt has been with us

for 16 years and has managed the salon for 10 years. She is

very loyal and loved by all.”

Airport Blvd. has two assistant managers: Melodie Turner

(4 years with FS and Amber Roberson (1 year w/FS). Both

are dedicated to their positions and Joyce says they do a

great job. She is grateful for their commitment.

The fantastic team also includes Kerri Ponder (1 year),

Wendy Fields (2 years), and Jamie McCullum (20 years). Jamie

started as a shampoo tech while attending cosmetology

school.

Manager Glenda discussed her experience here. “I have had

the pleasure of working at the best salon in Mobile. I work

for and with the most wonderful people! I feel that we have

some very talented stylists who love what they do.”

This sentiment is echoed by the rest of the staff and most

definitely felt by guests, who feel comfortable and happy

when visiting the salon. Keep up the good work!

Step by Stepadapted by Nicole Grigsby, West Region Educator

Step 1 Shampoo hair with BioSilk Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner according to directions on the bottle. Start with damp, towel-dried hair. Spray BioSilk Volumizing Root Lift at the roots and gently massage to work the product into the hair.

Step 2 Apply BioSilk Volumizing Styling Foam from mid-shaft to ends of the hair for control.

Step 3 Rough-dry the hair using a CHI Touch hair dryer until it is 50% dry.

Step 4 Section the hair into 3 sections using CHI plastic clips. The first is at the crown, the second is the layer below, and the third is the remaining hair that can be left down.

Step 5 Begin drying the hair in the bottom section using your CHI Touch hair dryer and large CHI Ceramic round brush. Take small subsections at a time and focus first on the root area, then the ends. Work your way up the head.

tIp 1 First, place your round brush on top of the section at the root and pull down to stretch the hair. Dry the top of the hair first to polish it. Then continue drying with your round brush underneath the section to bend the hair and add body.

tIp 2 To add bounce, set the top sections after drying with a clip and let cool for 5-10 minutes then drop.

tIp 3 For extra smoothness, run your CHI Iron lightly over the top layers and bend at the roots and ends.

Step 6 When the hair is completely dry, apply BioSilk Volumizing Texturizing Powder to the roots and massage scalp.

Step 7 Spritz BioSilk Volumizing Hairspray for hold.

Step 8 Spray with FS Finishing Spray to hold the style in place all night!

Q. How do I know what to choose: CHI blondest blonde, the powder Sunglitz or CHI Infra High Lift Crème Color when lightening?

A. If you are going to use a technique requiring

application near the scalp (full head application) use

CHI Blondest Blonde or CHI Infra with no more than 20

volume generator.

For all other “off the scalp” techniques you can use Sunglitz with activators 1 or 2, or CHI Blondest Blonde with 10, 20, 30 or 40 volume CHI generator. CHI Infra is also used with 10, 20, 30 or 40 volume CHI generator.

CHI BlonDeSt BlonDe Use CHI Blondest Blonde when tonal control is not important. CHI Blondest Blonde will lift beautifully since it lifts blue, red and yellow at the same rate. You rarely need to tone except when you are removing old color.

SUnGlItZ Use Sunglitz to neutralize unwanted tones. Sunglitz is not intended to use for super light pastel blondes. Remember the “sun” in Sunglitz. Think of summer “sun kissed” blondes and brunettes. When lifting salt-and-pepper hair (less than 50% gray), it is important to remember that white/gray hair has some yellow pigment that can show up when lifting. Beige Sunglitz will control how much yellow is actually exposed. Beige Sunglitz will give you cool blonde results. Strawberry is great when maintaining warmth in your final result. Ash or Beige Sunglitz is a good choice if your guest has a tendency to pull warm.

Golden Blonde is great for dark browns to medium blondes who want golden highlights at any level.

CHI InFRA Use CHI Infra when you want to truly control warmth in your blondes. You can enhance gold tones with the Golden Blonde (GB). Give very dark hair realistic natural brown highlights with NBR, ABR or CBR. The reds are outstanding on very dark hair. They are great for accent pieces with vibrant color results. Use equal parts RR and RV to create a vibrant red on dark hair.

A lot of it is personal choice and it’s important to have all three on hand.

Use CHI Blondest Blonde 10 and 20 volume generator

for applications 1/8 from the scalp.

Powder Sunglitz works too quickly to use for full head lightening services.

Sunglitz and CHI Blondest Blonde work well for quick color corrections. If all you want to do is lift a level or two use CHI Blondest Blonde for your color correction. If you need

to adjust a tone and lift up to two levels choose powder

Sunglitz in the appropriate color for your desired result.
