the best career opportunities available. Its focus was to ensure their skills were

showcased and matched suitably with the HR requirements of employers from diverse

industries, in a timesaving and cost-efficient manner. Its concentrated approach has

made TimesJobs.com the blue-eyed boy of recruiters and aspirants

alike.TimesJobs.com, had achieved the

distinction of becoming India's No.1

recruitment portal in India in April 2007, with

the largest number of active jobseekers and a

database of over 10 million candidates with

over 20,000 new resumes added every day,

TimesJobs.com is the fastest growing and most innovative Indian online recruitment

portal, was born with a mission to reach out to all Indians in the country and abroad

and provide them with the best career opportunities available. Their prime focus is to

ensure that the person's skills are showcased and matched suitably with the HR

recruiters and aspirants alike.

TimesJobs.com is India’s No.1 recruitment portal in India, with the largest number of

massive database of over two hundred thousand better paying jobs available from

over 20,000 recruiters, including blue-chip companies from India and abroad, ensures

that the search always yields results. Timesjobs.com is famous all over the glove; one

of the main reasons behind the popularity of it is following.

Ability to reach a larger audience of candidates: Online employment sites give

exposure to millions of qualified job seekers, in the same town, in nearby cities and in

locations within commuting distance across the country making it easier to reach the

best candidates locally as well as nationally, any time, day or night. Greater

productivity in recruiting efforts & Shorter lead time: Recruitment efforts are

constantly monitored on “cost of hire” and “time to hire” based parameters. Online

career sites allow employers to post job ads any time with flexibility, and screen

resumes rapidly. Openings can be advertised and resumes are received within hours.

In addition, saved searches can be used to identify resumes matching the openings.

Finally, the organizational function enables recruiters2 to evaluate a large number of

candidates and select the best prospects.

24

Page 25: timesjobs.com

Job posting capabilities: It helps the corporate to post a compelling job description on

site and maintain it for a long time at low cost.

Resume search capability: Ability to use filters and shortlist desirable candidates from

a large pool very easily.

Connecting with right candidate: As online career sites give the ability to include

more detail about the skills and experience required, corporate are free to write a more

targeted, effective job description which otherwise is missing in the newsprint given

the prohibitive costs. A detailed description enable corporate to pinpoint on qualified

candidates and generate more meaningful responses, helping to ensure that the first

hire is the right hire. Advantage to job seekers: It helps the job seekers to identify the

best job fit and apply only to those. Larger, more detailed, more visible

advertisements: Online employment sites give more space for money while

newspaper ads are sold at a cost per line of copy. A newspaper posting typically runs

for one or two days while an online job posting for around 30 days.

(ii) History

Page 30: timesjobs.com

The Times Of India was founded on November 3, 1838 as The Bombay Times and

Journal of Commerce, during the British Raj. Published every Saturday and

Wednesday, The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce was launched as a bi-

weekly edition. It contained news from Britain and the world, as well as the

Subcontinent. The daily editions of the paper were started from 1850 and in 1861, the

Bombay Times was renamed The Times of India. In the 19th century this newspaper

company employed more than 800 people and had a sizable circulation in India and

Europe. It was after India's Independence that the ownership of the paper passed on to

the then famous industrial family of Dalmiyas and later it was taken over by Sahu

Shanti Prasad Jain of the Sahu Jain group from Bijnore, UP.

India's press in the 1840s was a motley collection of small-circulation daily or weekly

sheets printed on rickety presses. Few extended beyond their small communities and

seldom tried to unite the many castes, tribes, and regional subcultures of India. The

Anglo-Indian papers promoted purely British interests. Robert Knight (1825–1892)

was the principal founder and the first editor of the Times.

30

Page 31: timesjobs.com

The son of a son of a London bank clerk from the lower-middle-class, Knight proved

a skilled writer and passionate reformer. Knight helped create a vibrant national

newspaper industry in British India. When the Sepoy Mutiny erupted, Knight was

acting editor of the Bombay Times and Standard. He broke with the rest of the

English language press (which focused on Indian savagery and treachery) and instead

blamed the violence on the lack of discipline and poor leadership in the army. That

angered the Anglo community, but attracted the Times's Indian shareholders, who

made him the permanent editor. Knight blasted the mismanagement and greed of the

Raj, attacking annexation policies that appropriated native lands and arbitrarily

imposed taxes on previously exempt land titles, ridiculing income taxes, and exposing

school systems that disregarded Indian customs and needs. Knight led the paper to

national prominence. In 1860, he bought out the Indian shareholders and merged with

the rival Bombay Standard, and started India's first news agency. It wired Times

dispatches to papers across the country and became the Indian agent for Reuters news

service. In 1861, he changed the name from the Bombay Times and Standard to the

Times of India. Knight fought for a press free of prior restraint or intimidation,

frequently resisting the attempts by governments, business interests, and cultural

spokesmen.

The first edition appears on November 3, 1838 known as "The Bombay Times and

Journal of Commerce", later to be known as “The Times of India “.

access the services offered by Times Business Solutions’ portals from the

Centre and make offline payments for online services, thus ensuring ease of

access and complete financial security.

History of job portals

The Online Career Center launched in 1993 as a non-profit organization backed by

forty major corporations as a system for job hunters to store their resumes within the

databases as well as for recruiters to post job openings to the databases.[1]

In 1994 Robert J. McGovern began NetStart Inc. as software sold to companies for

listing job openings on their Web sites and manage the incoming e-mails those listings

generated. After an influx of two million dollars in investment capital [2] he then

transported this software to its own web address, at first listing the job openings from

the companies who utilized the software.[3] NetStart Inc. changed its name in 1998 to

operate under the name of their software, CareerBuilder.[4] The company received a

further influx of seven million dollars from investment firms such as New Enterprise

Associates to expand their operations.[5]

40

Page 41: timesjobs.com

Six major newspapers joined forces in 1995 to list their classified sections online. The

service was called CareerPath.com and featured help-wanted listings from the Los

Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, San Jose

Mercury News and the Washington Post.[6]

The industry attempted to reach a broader, less tech-savvy base in 1998

when Hotjobs.com attempted to buy a Super Bowl spot, but Fox rejected the ad for

being in poor taste. The ad featured a janitor at a zoo sweeping out the Elephant cage

completely unbeknownst to the animal. The elephant sits down briefly and when it

stands back up, the janitor has disappeared. The ad meant to illustrate a need for those

stuck in jobs they hate, and offer a solution through their Web site.[7] Hotjobs.com promplty fired the advertising agency who created the ad.[8]

Monster.com gambled on a 1999 Super Bowl ad. CEO Jeff Taylor authorized three 30

second spots for a total of four million dollars.[9] The ad which featured children

speaking like adults, drolly intoning their dream of working at various dead-end jobs

to humorous effect were far more popular than rival Hotjobs.com ad about a security

guard who transitions from a low paying security job to the same job at a fancier

building.[10]Monster.com was elevated to the top spot of online employment sites.[11] Hotjobs.com's ad wasn't as successful, but it gave the company enough of a boost

for its IPO in August.[12]

After being purchased in a joint venture by Knight Ridder and Tribune Company in

July[13], CareerBuilder absorbed competitor boards CareerPath.com and then

Headhunter.net which had already acquired CareerMosaic. Even with these aggressive

mergers CareerBuilder still trailed behind the number one employment site

Jobsonline.com, number two Monster.com and number threeHotjobs.com.[14]

Monster.com made a move in 2001 to purchase Hotjobs.com for $374 million

in stock, but were unsuccessful due to Yahoo's unsolicited cash and stock bid of $430

million late in the year. Yahoo had previously announced plans to enter the job board

business, but decided to jump start that venture by purchasing the established brand.[15] By August 2002, Monster.com posted a loss of $504 million forcing COO James

Treacy to resign.[16]

online recruitment portal, was born with a mission to reach out to all Indians in the

country and abroad and provide them with the best career opportunities available. Its

Page 43: timesjobs.com

TimesJobs.com pioneered the concept of job fairs in India, branded as 'Big Leap',

which have become the industry standard for facilitating direct interaction of

jobseekers and employers. The first such event was conducted at the Delhi Public

School, R K Puram, New Delhi on March 21, 2004, which had 10 clients offer on-the-

spot jobs to over 10,000 jobseekers who walked in over the 2 days of the event.

TimesJobs.com conducted its first 'Jumbo', Job Fair christened according to its

mammoth scale, spanning across sectors such as Hospitality, Airlines, HR

Consultancy, Retail, Insurance, Banking & Finance, Telecom, IT & ITeS, Education,

etc in May 2004, at the Pragati Maidan, which saw over 60 clients and 1-lakh

jobseekers. Jumbo is a bi-annual event at Pragati Maidan, and draws crowds, similar

to the IITF, and Auto Expo. We are also encouraging the 'Reverse Brain Drain' and

have conducted Job Fairs in the US.

As part of our CSR activities, TimesJobs.com also forged alliances with The Indian

Army - TimesJobs.com was the only website with the wherewithal and credentials to

tie up with their placement agencies. TimesJobs.com collaborated with the Indian

Army Placement Agency (APA), to leverage the skills of the retiring army personnel

in facilitating their entry into the corporate world, and successfully established the

website solution - www.apa.co.in in 2005.

In February 2006, the company launch of its Gulf portal, ae.TimesJobs.com,

becoming the first Indian job site with an international footprint. The Gulf portal is

intended as a platform where companies based in Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya,

Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE, converge with talent from India to satisfy their

HR requirements. Not only that, residents of this region can apply for jobs in Gulf

countries and India, through ae.TimesJobs.com.

43

Page 44: timesjobs.com

Most recently in October 2009, TimesJobs Global Connect was launched that enabled

users to link all their professional online identities and work to their TimesJobs.com

resume. A candidate can link their chat ID's, professional profiles, websites, blog

links, embed work samples, etc. in their TimesJobs.com Resume.

(iv)Brand Identity

What is identity?

To appreciate the meaning of this significant concept in brand management, we shall

51

Page 52: timesjobs.com

begin by considering the many ways in which the world is used. For example, we

speak identity cards - personal, non-transferable document which tell in a few words

that are, what our name is and what distinguishable features we have that can be

instantly recognized. We also hear of identity of opinion between several people,

meaning that they have an identical point of view.

In terms of communication, this second interpretation of the word suggests brand

identity is the common element sending a single message amid the wide variety of its

products, actions and slogans. This is important since the more the brand expands and

diversifies, the more customers are inclined to feel that they are, in fact, dealing with

several different brands rather than a single one. If products and communication go

their separate ways, how can customers possibly perceive these different routes as

converging towards common aim and brand?

Speaking of identical points of view also raises the question of permanence and

continuity. As civil status and physical appearance change, identity cards get updated,

yet the fingerprint of their holders always remains the same. The identity concept

questions how time will affect the unique and permanent quality of the sender, the

brand or the retailer. In this respect, psychologists speak of the identity crisis which

adolescents often go through. When their identity structure is still weak, teenagers

tend to move from one role model to another. These constant shifts create a gap and

force the basic question: ‘What is the real me”?

Finally, in studies on social groups or minorities, we often speak of cultural identity.

In seeking an identity, they are in fact seeking a pivotal basis on which to hinge not

only their inherent differences but also their membership of a specific cultural entity.

Brand identity may be a recent notion, but many researchers have already delved into

the organizational identity of companies. There, the simplest verbal expression of

identity often consist in saying: “Oh yes, I see, but it’s not the same in our company!”.

In other words, corporate identity truly exists and that it is a coherent and unique

being with a history and a place of its own, different from others.

From these various meanings, we can infer that having an identity means being your

true self, driven by a personal goal that is both different from others and resistant to

change. Thus, brand identity will be clearly defined once the following questions are

answered:

- What is the brand’s particular vision and aim?

- What makes it different?

- What need is the brand fulfilling?

- What is permanent nature?

- What are its value or values?

- What are the signs which make it recognizable?

These questions could indeed constitute the brand’s charter. This type of official

document would help better brand management in the medium term, both in terms of

form and content, and so better address future communication and extension issues.

Communication tools such as the copy strategy are essentially linked to advertising

campaigns, and so are only committed to the short term. There must be specific

guidelines to ensure that there is indeed only one brand forming a solid and coherent

entity.

Now talking about these points differently:

- What is the brand’s particular vision and aim?

A new internet division was formed under R. Sundar. Previously Director Response,

Director TOI Brand and later Director Corporate, BCCL, Sundar has funneled his

So, the basic funda lies in connecting the employer and the prospective employee.

Apart from these Timesjobs.com also provides various functions such as Jobtalk on

yahoo.com, building effective resume, career premium services, techgig and many

more. We should discuss these in explanation.

Nowadays no one wonders how Job Sites have taken over the recruitment space in

recent decades  replacing all the conventional sources that were prominent in the pre-

Internet era. Internet has consolidated recruitment business applying advanced

technology which made the process of recruitment on the part of employers and job

search on the part of job seekers. In today’s world no authority, including

governmental, corporate, business, trade, human resource consulting, outsourcing and

any other, can neglect the omnipresence of the web in the process of human resource

augmenting.

When we analyze the world of job sites we can see great variety in characteristic

features and functionality, technology implementation, effectiveness, popularity, size

of business, type of business strategy, etc. There are mega sites which serve the

multinational markets and across all categories/industry segments, there are sites

which serve within a nation or region, there are sites which serve a particular

profession, industry, or job function.

61

Page 62: timesjobs.com

Jobs in India are available in almost every field. These jobs are always searched

amongst the National dailies for jobs all over India and for nearby places.

Candidates can stay in their native place and can find the right job in India through

different job portals. One can look for desired job in the field of finance, sales,

architecture, etc. Finance jobs in India are always available on the online job portals.

These are recently launched job providers. Almost all internet users try to find the

right job through these portals. This is because:

• Portals are readily available at our convenient time. We can update our resume even

at 12 in the night.

• Job portals suggest various job options as per the qualification and experience.

Candidate can search the right option and leave the rest.

• Candidates need not pay a single penny to these portals for their services. These

services are free of cost for applicants.

• Candidates can search for job in Hyderabad while sitting in Mumbai or some other

location. They just have to go to that place at the time of interview.

• Job portals help candidate to search job again and again and update resume time and

again to get better job options.

Many people are taking advantage of this option and getting the right Jobs in India as

per their experience. These portals are particularly more useful for the starters and

middle level managers because online job portals offer best jobs in these categories.

Of late,

some leading online job providers have also started giving options for upper level

management to satiate their thirst.

Architecture jobs, finance jobs in India, Sales Jobs in India and almost all jobs in

India are searched by the candidates to achieve the desired profile.

62

Page 63: timesjobs.com

People might not own a PC or an internet connection; then they can go to nearby

cyber café and search for suitable options through different online job portals. But

first you have to make a detailed resume and an email ID for the job providers to

respond to.

Applying for a job online or search for a potential candidate has become the order of

the day. Earlier the job posting was limited to newspapers. However, at present,

millions of people are using job portals to bag their dream job or hire a suitable

applicant. While the job aspirant get hold of the most lucrative job opportunities, the

employers make sure that they got the best possible individual with the help of these

jobs sites, employment sites, or job centre. As the trend of online recruitment is

getting popular day by day, each individual is compelled to try their luck in the

employment sites.

Job portal plays a very vital role in the job market and function as a bridge between

recruiters and job seekers. Software, IT, management, pharmacy and finance

companies were the sole users of job portals earlier; however, as time progresses,

people from all other sectors started posting jobs on such portals. There are certain

things, which make Job Portals an ideal place for complete hiring and recruiting

process. Recruiters can hire employees as per their requirements.

The best media to look for any opening within a firm are the online job portals. These

are the portals where all the relevant details related to a job can be visualized

thoroughly. Over here, the firms put in the complete details related to the job opening

like the educational qualifiactions required, key skills or talents needed, experience,

job description etc. When a prospective candidate visits the site, he tries to fit himself

in the job description provided and checks whether he really meets all the

requirements or not.

This way, through the online job portals, one can easily get the complete knowledge

of all the job openings to which he can apply. In the online job portals, there are

various

63

Page 64: timesjobs.com

categories under which jobs are posted. There are numerous jobs under each category

and so a person has various options to chose from. Moreover, the person always finds

the most appropriate jobs in India that he can apply to. This way, among so many jobs

in India, he can only apply to those which are the most appropriate and suitable.

* Cost Effective Additional User Licenses available as an Independent product With

the Additional User License product, you have the flexibility to choose the right

product according to your needs. For example: if you need an Additional User License

Additional User License is now an independent product which has its own start and

end date. Practically speaking, this means that you don’t need to depend on the expiry

of the main database product. Even if the main product is expired the Additional

License can be active.

Although you won’t be able to use it until the time that the main database service is

not active, on renewal of the main database, the account user who has the Additional

License service can use the database service straightaway.

A prominent feature is that you can always interchange between different Additional

66

Page 67: timesjobs.com

Once the Additional License which you have allocated to your account user gets

expired and you have other Additional Licenses, you will be able to easily allocate

Wooo Hooo!! Jobs live in just TWO minutes!!

Jobs posted can now be seen by candidates just a whopping TWO minutes later! As

your job post gets seen 2 minutes later, you can sit back and enjoy the visibility you

will get without missing a single viewer.

Making Job Postings more visible

Here’s how: When a candidate searches for a job, he/ she gets a list of every related

job pertaining to his search on the site. Under job posting are three links - one is for

the candidate to view other jobs that are related to their general job search, the second

option is for them to view more jobs by the same recruiter, and the final (and newest)

option is a combination of both the above and gives the candidate an option to view

similar jobs by the same recruiter. It is not recommended to account users to post

same job immediately after posting the very same job.

Maximized visibility to job postings

For all, who have job posts on TimesJobs, will allow them to view your job posts

from any browser, anytime and anywhere.

Some of the other benefits that candidates get with the all new TimesJobs toolbar is

that they can get shown matching jobs, visit TimesJobs with a single click, save their

previous searches, be kept informed about news headlines and happenings and more.

One who has posted his job on timesjobs can view it from anywhere just 10 minutes

(iii) Working Model of the company

Timesjobs.com mainly in the business of providing consultancy solution for job and

resume services to the job seekers. The sales process is mainly done by selling resume

making facilities, cover letter facilities via there websites and also through their

offices in major cities across India. The companies also generate revenues by allowing

the employers to post jobs as per the requirements. Thus we can say that they operate

in both the domains of the business i.e. B2B as well as B2C. In B2B, the sale is

mainly done by approaching the prospective employer, and by convincing him that

they will provide the best of the talent for the vacancy the employer is having in the

company.

70

Page 71: timesjobs.com

The presales preparation is done by collecting in detail information about the

prospective employer, the type of work the organisation is performing, the level of

hierarchy, the compensation package offered by the employer to their employees, the

information about the offices the company is having the employee base and other

information. Opening of sales is done by contacting the HR personnel of the firm and

convincing him/her about the offer they are providing them. They provide attractive

offers to the companies like the quality database they are having, they provide the best

of the talent at the lowest price possible. They also provide discounts to the recruiters

for posting jobs in there websites for longer periods. If the recruiter finds the offer of

timesjobs.com representative effective and suitable for their company, the company

gives agreement for posting the job.

Sometimes the recruiter himself visits the site and searches the resume of the suitable

candidate on the website. But this facility is not free timesjobs.com also charges from

recruiters on account of letting them search the resume on the website.

In B2C scenario, the situation is bit different, the job seekers are not charged anything

for uploading there resume on the website. Timesjobs.com sells the resume making

services to the job seekers, by providing them customized resume making services.

Most of the job seekers purchase these services for having a better resume which can

impart a better image in front of the recruiters.

71

72

Closing the sale by assuring therecruiter that timesjobs.com has the exact

Convincing him about the offerwhich timesjobs.com make with him.

Page 73: timesjobs.com

Model showing working of Timesjobs.com

The above model is also showing the working model of the company. This is a model

which is showing how the job seeker is connected to the company or the employers

through the job portal. Placement consultants also use the job portal the same way as

the companies do.

73

Page 74: timesjobs.com

The job seeker has to register on the job site i.e. Timesjobs.com which is free of cost.

No cost is charged by job seeker for this purpose. He has to furnish various

information’s regarding himself which include his contact number and his e-mail id.

He has to register to the website through an e-mail id.

Now companies on the other hand, to gain an access to the database of the job seeker

has to pay to the company. This payment depends upon the term and kind of the

service. These services will be discussed later. Same is the case with the placement

consultants. He also has to pay for the database service. After this, they will get user

id and password. After using this user id and password they can have an access to the

database. Every access to the database has a 1+1 login system i.e. two persons can

login at a single time. After that they can shortlist candidates according to their

requirement.

Placement consultants do not recruit directly through companies but through

themselves. They also charge some amount of money from the job seeker. Leaving

this in the entire process the job seeker is not paying anything, but the amount is

charged only from the employers on different services used. This is the simple

working model on which timesjobs.com works. This can be bifurcated into several

sections such as:

Employee Section, Employer Section and HR Consultant section.

In a hierarchical organisation employees are ranked at various levels within the

organisation, each level is one above the other. At each stage in the chain, one person

has a number of workers directly under them, within their span of control. A tall

hierarchical organisation has many levels and a flat hierarchical organisation will only

have a few. A traditional hierarchical structure clearly defines each employee’s role

within the organisation and defines the nature of their relationship with other

employees. Hierarchical organisations are often tall with narrow spans of control,

which gets wider as we move down the structure. They are often centralised with the

most important decisions being taken by senior management.

In the twentieth century as organisations grow bigger, hierarchical organisations were

popular because they could ensure command and control of the organisation.

However with the advent of globalisation and widespread use of technology, in the

1990’s tall hierarchical organisations began to downsize and reduce their workforce.

Technology was able to carry out many of the functions previously carried out by

humans.

Organizational Structure Types and Design Strategy

Starting a new organization can be a hard task, no matter how big or small it may be.

Whether you are starting a new company, business, or you're a school board member,

your organization needs a good structure to keep it going. On our site, you can find

information on strategies, designs, and the implementation of different types of

organizational structure. We can offer examples for businesses, companies,

corporations, schools, restaurants, and more. .

79

Page 80: timesjobs.com

The structure of your business will act as the backbone and support concerning

decision making and other processes. Deciding early what type of organizational

system you want to implement will help to ease the stress of the initial start-up. If

each person in the organization knows what he or she is supposed to be doing, there is

less room for confusion and poor judgment. Perhaps setting up a management team

would work the best for your organization, or perhaps a hierarchy of decision makers

would work better. Either way, setting up a definite structure before important shots

are called makes a difference.

80

Page 81: timesjobs.com

Organizational Structure Corporate Theory

The first step is determining what type of organizational structure you would like to

design and implement. Some examples of structures would be, functional and

hierarchical. Next, you should develop a strategy to start organizing your business,

company, or group. How do you want it to run? From the top down, or by a matrix of

different people, such as a management department is a big decision. Once you have a

few options picked out, you can decide which option will be optimal to produce the

results you desire.

On this site, you can find assistance on the topics above. Available to you are designs,

models, alternative ideas, and strategy examples for setting up the structure of your

business. Also available are different theories and opinions surrounding some

strategies discussed. As for smaller organizations, we can offer some public resources

to help you in your specific area. Additionally, simple versions of structures can be

found.

If you choose the options that best fit your organization then you're more likely to

succeed in your market. By having the right people in the right place, it can lead to

better networking opportunities, higher sales, increased interest in your organization,

and overall success.

Define or Definition

Organizational structure can be defined as the way or method through use of a

hierarchy that a group, business, organization, people or objects collaborate to achieve

success on one common goal.

81

Page 82: timesjobs.com

Advantages of Hierarchical

Organisations

Disadvantages of Hierarchical

Organisations

Authority and responsibility and clearly

defined

Clearly defined promotion path.

The organisation can be bureaucratic and

respond slowly to changing customer

needs and the market within which the

organisation operates.

There are specialists managers and the

hierarchical environment encourages the

effective use of specialist managers.

Communication across various sections

can be poor especially horizontal

communication.

Employees very loyal to their department

within the organisation.

Departments can make decisions which

benefit them rather than the business as a

whole especially if there is Inter-

departmental rivalry.

82

Page 83: timesjobs.com

 Hierarchy of Organizational Structure

All large companies have a design in their structure that works best for them. Most

large companies follow the basis of what any other large organization would. Such as

School, Military, Police, or even a Government, they all have their own set in standard

way of hierarchy. This can be mirrored of what a fortune 500 company would use. Of

course you have your owner, VP's, and then comes the managers.

CEO

Vice Presidents

Lawyers

Decision Support

Management

Employees

In this typical layout, it can be spread across any number of product lines or services a

company offers. For instance if a company offers five different product lines then

there is usually going to be a Vice President put in place to represent one of each

sections, then would come the decision support for those sections and of course

followed by its own management structure. Fortune 500 companies like Verizon,

Comcast, or even Staples must have achieved this successful design and strategy to

allow them to grow so rapidly and become so large. The divisional way of doing

things can be seen like a matrix, where any given employee can have anywhere from

two managers to dozens.

2. Monster.com

Monster is present in more than 25 countries all overthe world. It is the biggest job search

portal in the world, with a huge database of job seekers inthe various job categories. It

was founded by Jeff Taylor in 1994 and operate under flagship of monster itself.

Monster.com is one of the largest employment websites in the world, owned and operated

by Monster Worldwide, Inc. Monster is one of the 20 most visited websites out of 100

million worldwide, according to comScore Media Metrics (November 2006). It was

created in 1999 by the merger of The Monster Board (TMB) and Online Career Center

(OCC), which were two of the first and most popular career web sites on the Internet.

Monster is primarily used to help those seeking work to find job openings that match

their skills and location.

Today, Monster is the largest job search engine in the world, with over a million job

postings at any time and over 150 million resumes in the database (2008) and over 63

million job seekers per month. The company employs approximately 5,000 employees in

36 countries. Its headquarters are in Maynard, Massachusetts.

Initially, the site was populated with job descriptions from the newspaper segment of

Adion's business with the permissions of the companies advertising the jobs.

Later in 1994, The Monster Board issued a press release that was picked up and provided

needed exposure to drive people to the web site. Monster was the first public job search

on the Internet; first public resume database in the world and the first to have job search

agents or job alerts.

128

Page 129: timesjobs.com

When TMP acquired Adion, the site was moved into BBN Planet's web hosting facility

where it grew from 3 SPARC-1000s to become the centerpiece of the globally distributed

network it is today.

TMP went public in December 1996, with its shares traded on Nasdaq under the symbol

“TMPW”. In 1998, TMP acquisitions expanded the Recruitment Advertising network.

TMP became one of the largest recruitment advertising agencies in the world.

In June 1998, The Monster Board moved its corporate headquarters out of a small office

above a Chinese restaurant in downtown Framingham, Massachusetts to an old textile

mill in Maynard, Massachusetts that formerly housed Digital Equipment Corporation.

In January 1999, The Monster Board became known as Monster.com after merging with

Online Career Center, another of TMP Worldwide's properties. The first post-merger

president of the new Monster.com business was Bill Warren, the founder of Online

Career Center. Bill Warren received the 1997 Employment Management Association's

prestigious Pericles Pro Meritus Award, an honor presented by EMA/SHRM in

recognition of being the founder of online recruiting on the Internet.

In November 2000, seeking to capture the entry-level job market, Monster acquired

JOBTRAK, which at the time had partnerships with more than 1,500 college and

university career centers. JOBTRAK was founded in 1987 by Connie Ramberg, Ken

Ramberg and David Franey. Monster rebranded JOBTRAK as MonsterTRAK and

continues to operate the site to target college students and alumni seeking jobs and career

advice.

Recognizing that job hunting often leads to relocation, Monster launched

Monstermoving.com in 2000 to provide consumers with the comprehensive resources

necessary for a successful move.

TMP Worldwide was added to S&P 500 Index in 2001. TMP Worldwide changed its

corporate name to Monster Worldwide, Inc. and began trading under the new Nasdaq

ticker symbol "MNST" in 2003.

129

Page 130: timesjobs.com

Monster.com advertised on the Super Bowl starting in 1999 and every year through Super

Bowl XXXVIII. Monster's first-ever Super Bowl ad, "When I Grow Up," (created by

Mullen) asking job seekers, "What did you want to be?" It is the only commercial named

to Time magazine's list of the "Best Television of 1999." As the official online career

management services sponsor of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and 2002 U.S.

Olympic Team, Monster had a strong presence at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt

Lake City.

Monster has recently been to blame in several instances of personal information theft. In

less than two weeks, in August 2007, Monster had numerous leaks that resulted in the

loss of millions of customers' data to identity theft. Although Monster waited several days

to announce this leak (drawing heavy criticism), they subsequently announced new

security measures to prevent this happening again.

However, in January 2009, there was another large scale leak at its UK based site

monster.co.uk, in which demographic information of up to 4.5 million people was

obtained by hackers.

Backdating an option means retroactively setting the option's strike price to a day when

the stock traded at a different price. A call (buy) option with a lower strike price is more

valuable because it's less expensive to exercise, while the inverse is true for a put (sell)

option. The practice is not necessarily illegal, but must be disclosed to shareholders. [10] In

July 2006, the company said it might restate financial results for the year that ended

December 31, 2005, and previous years to record additional noncash charges for stock-

based compensation expenses relating to various stock option grants.[11]

In September 2006, Monster suspended Myron Olesnyckyj pending the internal review

irregular stock option grants.[11] He had held the titles of senior vice president, general

counsel and secretary.[10]

130

Page 131: timesjobs.com

On October 9, 2006 Monster named William M. Pastore, 58, chief executive after

Andrew J. McKelvey resigned his posts as chairman and chief executive. McKelvey

retained his seat on the board as chairman emeritus. [10] The company said on October 25

that it found pricing problems in a "substantial number" of its past option grants, and as a

result it expected to restate its results from 1997 through 2005.

On November 22, 2006 Monster terminated Myron Olesnyckyj, the company's lead

lawyer, as part of its investigation into past stock-option grant practices. In a statement,

the company said Olesnyckyj was terminated "for cause."

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York has issued a subpoena

to the company over options backdating, and a special committee of company directors

has said it wants to complete its own investigation by the end of the year. The company

has delayed filing its earnings results for the second and third quarters. Second-quarter

results are expected December 13. Third-quarter numbers would be issued "as soon as

practicable," according to a November 7 statement from the company.

Monster Worldwide Inc. stated that it has received a notice from Nasdaq about a possible

delisting of its shares due to the company's failure to file its third-quarter earnings report.

their distinguishing features which may be same to timesjobs.com and may be different to

it. There is a very intense competition among the major market players in this market. If

we are talking about the major market players in this sector, then two more players come

into the mind; Monster.com and Naukri.com.

themselves from timesjobs.com. We will also talk about the site statics of these different

players and which one is considered to have an edge over the other and on what basis.

All of them basically work on the same platform but when we talk about the appearance,

impact, database of students, value added services then we can differentiate on these

basis. Naukri and monster are older ventures in the job portal market as compared to

Timesjobs.

explained as selling the database to the recruiters for their recruitment purpose of

Naukri.com: 20 million reachable resume with 15000 added per day

159

Page 160: timesjobs.com

Monster.com: 1.2 crore resume with 20000 resume added per day

Timesjobs.com: 13 million job seekers 8000 resume added per day

This is a trend which shows a hierarchal order of market share, database strength and

popularity among the users of the job portals. Clearly, Naukri is at top spot, followed by

monster and timesjobs. This data also shows that naukri is the oldest and most

experienced player in its market segment.

The new advertising campaign by timesjobs.com. In the print and online advertisements

they claim to be the “largest” job portal in India. By their definition “largest” means that

they have the most number of active resumes. Again, they classify active resumes as

resumes that have shown some activity in the last 3 months. Seriously, if I was looking

for a job, in today’s economy, do you think it would take me 3 months to find a job? Well,

that’s beside the point.

So let’s talk about active resumes. When would you consider a resume to be active?

When a person applies to a job online, and,

When modifications are carried out in an existing resume.

What should not be taken as an active resume?

When I log into my account to simply browse.

Automatic logins after being diverted from third party locations.

All facts available to me, point out that timesjobs is doing exactly what is not as

acceptable international standard. Also, there are mails circulating in cyberspace wherein

timesjobs prompts its existing jobseeker base to register their resume with multiple email

ids so that the same persons resume is listed multiple times in the timesjobs database.

160

Page 161: timesjobs.com

When it comes to rankings, up to 8 different, independent internet ranking authorities,

rate naukri.com as the biggest in terms of traffic, reach, page views and time spent by

jobseekers on the site.

Some time ago monster.com claimed to be No.1, now its timesjobs.com claiming to be

No.1. Both of them claiming to be bigger than naukri.com. Do I detect a little taste of

foot in the mouth for timesjobs.com?

If nothing else, then naukri.com management should thank the timesjobs management for

finally putting naukri’s name in big bold letters in their publications. This is something

that was and still is not allowed by the time group.

Last but not the least, naukri.com continues to demand and get a premium for all its

services. If timesjobs is No.1, as they claim, then why would they see at prices that are

one third of naukri.com rates. This is simply because their products and customer service

simply fails to deliver. Client acquisition for them is only though undercutting and not

through value addition.

Of course, with the backing of big papa TOI, they can afford to sell at throw away prices

indefinitely. Besides, if your product is only good enough to be thrown away, you might

as well sell it at throw away prices.

This is an excerpt of an article which shows the war between naukri and timesjobs. This

also shows that naukri.com is ahead of timesjobs.

CHAPTER 5

SWOT ANALYSIS

162

Page 163: timesjobs.com

Now before discussing SWOT Analysis of timesjobs.com let us first discuss in general

that what actually is SWOT analysis and what all factors come under it.

A scan of the internal and external environment is an important part of the strategic

planning process. Environmental factors internal to the firm usually can be classified as

strengths (S) or weaknesses (W), and those external to the firm can be classified as

opportunities (O) or threats (T). Such an analysis of the strategic environment is referred

to as a SWOT analysis.

The SWOT analysis provides information that is helpful in matching the firm's resources

and capabilities to the competitive environment in which it operates. As such, it is

instrumental in strategy formulation and selection. The following diagram shows how a

SWOT analysis fits into an environmental scan:

SWOT Analysis Framework

Environmental Scan          / \

Internal Analysis       External Analysis/ \                  / \

Strengths   Weaknesses       Opportunities   Threats|

SWOT Matrix

163

Page 164: timesjobs.com

Strengths

A firm's strengths are its resources and capabilities that can be used as a basis for

developing a competitive advantage. Examples of such strengths include:

patents strong brand names

good reputation among customers

cost advantages from proprietary know-how

exclusive access to high grade natural resources

favorable access to distribution networks

Weaknesses

The absence of certain strengths may be viewed as a weakness. For example, each of the

following may be considered weaknesses:

lack of patent protection a weak brand name

poor reputation among customers

high cost structure

lack of access to the best natural resources

lack of access to key distribution channels

In some cases, a weakness may be the flip side of a strength. Take the case in which a

firm has a large amount of manufacturing capacity. While this capacity may be

considered a strength that competitors do not share, it also may be a considered a

weakness if the large investment in manufacturing capacity prevents the firm from

reacting quickly to changes in the strategic environment.

164

Page 165: timesjobs.com

Opportunities

The external environmental analysis may reveal certain new opportunities for profit and

growth. Some examples of such opportunities include:

165

Page 166: timesjobs.com

an unfulfilled customer need

arrival of new technologies

loosening of regulations

removal of international trade barriers

Threats

Changes in the external environmental also may present threats to the firm. Some

examples of such threats include:

shifts in consumer tastes away from the firm's products

emergence of substitute products

new regulations

increased trade barriers

166

Page 167: timesjobs.com

Now basically it is clear and we understand that what all things come under a SWOT

Analysis. So, now let us start with the SWOT Analysis of Timesjobs.com

Strength

Timesjobs comes under the brand name of TBSL (Times Business Solution

Limited) which belongs to the Times of India Group. Operating under such a

good brand name is itself a strength for the company. This at least shows that the

job portal is well established and it is having a good man force.

Strong database of job seekers and employers. Timesjobs is having a strong

database of jobseekers with around 8000 job seekers added per month on an

average. Now, many would say that this is a bit less as compared to naukri and

monster. But if we see the age of all the job portals then the kind of success

stories Timesjob has created in un comparable.

When we talk about the cost, Timesjobs.com is very much cost competitive. As

compared to cost of naukri and monster the cost of all the services of

Timesjobs.com is less than that of its competitors. This definitely gives an edge

over its competitors.

Operates on pan India basis and on Gulf basis too as an added advantage.

Timesjobs is working on a pan India basis and also gives a hell lot of services for

the gulf countries. The number of jobs in these countries are a lot. This provides

a strength for the company.

167

Page 168: timesjobs.com

The job portal has a variety of value added services and special services such as BCZ,

Campus Direct et al, which really breaks the clutter and differentiates it from its

competitor. This could also be said as a strength for the company.

Weakness

The database of Timesjobs is not bad but when we compare it with others then its

pretty less. The database of job seekers as compares to naukri and monster are

quite less. The recruiters also feel the same and while choosing the job portal

they feel a bit insecure by the fact. This could be due to nascent stage of

Timesjobs.com as compared to other job portals.

Timesjobs is operating on a regional basis and the workforce is not distributed

evenly in all regions. For ex. in the east region there is less workforce for the

small cities like Ranchi and Patna is not available and the recruiter has to consult

the head office of the region to buy the plans manually.

The homepage of the Timesjobs contain all the feature but it looks a bit cluttered

as its has a lots of link and the appearance is a bit hazy. It is both a boon and

curse as a job seeker both want everything on a page but in a simplified manner.

168

Page 169: timesjobs.com

Opportunity

Lot of development is going on in various sectors. Like, Service Sector ,Power ,

health, Tourism, Hotels and Hospitality, Education, Industry and Infrastructure,

etc and opportunities can be tapped through proper planning. It is implicit that

the jobs in these sectors are increasing and the opportunity in these sectors is also

huge.

All the cities are in need of good job fairs under a good brand name incase of

BPO and certain emergency jobs. As Timesjobs is conducting job fairs it has a

good opportunity.

Threat

Competition is continuously rising in this sector and to overcome it Timesjobs has

to come up with several new ideas and methods to implement in its website so tha

it can continuously fight competition. If not it would be a great threat to the

portal.

Rising number of business consultants are are also a threat for the job portal

companies. The consultants provide a direct interface to the job seeker and the

portals provide a virtual interface. People are relying more on consultants as they

provide quick and on target service.

This is SWOT Analysis for Timesjobs.com

169

Page 170: timesjobs.com

PEST ANALYSIS

It is very important that an organization considers its environment before beginning the

marketing process. In fact, environmental analysis should be continuous and feed all

aspects of planning. The organization's marketing environment is made up from:

1. The internal environment

2. The micro-environment

3. The macro-environment e.g. Political (and legal) forces, Economic forces,

Sociocultural forces, and Technological forces. These are known as PEST factors.

Political Factors: The political arena has a huge influence upon the regulation of

businesses, and the spending power of consumers and other businesses.

Economic Factors: Marketers need to consider the state of a trading economy in the

short and long-terms. This is especially true when planning for international marketing.

Sociocultural Factors: The social and cultural influences on business vary from country

to country. It is very important that such factors are considered.

Technological Factors: Technology is vital for competitive advantage, and is a major

driver of globalization.

The above chart shows the parameters of PEST Analysis

Now, let us give a view on the PEST Analysis of Timesjobs.com:

Political: Timesjobs.com has nothing to do with the environmental rules and regulation

and hence there is no constrain over this factor. But yes, if we talk about taxation policy

then it charges a tax of 10.3 percent and also pays tax to the government. It is basically a

database provider so to provide the database of one country to another is no barriers. The

students if are applying for the jobs need to follow all the policies. If we talk about

political stability then one thing should be kept in mind that it works on pan India basis

and there different political regulations.

Economic: The economic growth of Timesjobs has been good since its inception. Since

2004, it has shown an upward growth. But during the recession the condition was not

good. Timesjobs.com is very flexible and accepts payments in installments. Taxation

policy is also like that it charges 10.3 percent tax. The stage in the lifecycle is of Growth

and I hpoe it will continue for sometime.

Socio-cultural: The life culture and the work culture and the environment of the

workplace is very young and dynamic. The work force is very dynamic and young.

There are various recreational activities in which the people indulge in various stress

relieving sessions. Most of people working here are either content developer or

Marketing guys. The environment is also fresh ang the young guns are promoted in

Timesjobs’ corporate.

173

Page 174: timesjobs.com

Technological: The Timesjobs’ focus on the technological aspect is also very much. The

content developer team is continuously bringing changes in the look anf feel of the

website and try and make it look user friendly. Job talk and Timesjobs on mobile are also

good features which are paid due attention and are revised at a constant rate. This has to

be kept in pace with the competitor as the lifecycle of each of these technologies is very

short.

174

Page 175: timesjobs.com

CHAPTER 6

JOB PROFILE

(i)Overview

175

Page 176: timesjobs.com

The job profile assigned to me was a simple sales model of the company. As told earlier

Timesjobs.com deals inbridging the gap between the job seeker and the employer. So,

job seeker can easily go on the homepage and register to the site. But job seeker has to

be given every bit of knowledge about the product. Now this model is discussed in the

following paragraph

Timesjobs.com is mainly in the business of providing consultancy solution for job and

resume services to the job seekers. The sales process is mainly done by selling resume

making facilities, cover letter facilities via there websites and also through their offices in

major cities across India. The companies also generate revenues by allowing the

employers to post jobs as per the requirements. Thus we can say that they operate in both

the domains of the business i.e. B2B as well as B2C.

In B2B, the sale is mainly done by approaching the prospective employer, and by

convincing him that they will provide the best of the talent for the vacancy the employer

is having in the company. The presales preparation is done by collecting in detail

information about the prospective employer, the type of work the organisation is

performing, the level of hierarchy, the compensation package offered by the employer to

their employees, the information about the offices the company is having the employee

base and other information. Opening of sales is done by contacting the HR personnel of

the firm and convincing him/her about the offer they are providing them. They provide

attractive offers to the companies like the quality database they are having, they provide

the best of the talent at the lowest price possible. They also provide discounts to the

recruiters for posting jobs in there websites for longer periods. If the recruiter finds the

offer of naukri.com representative effective and suitable for their company,

the company gives agreement for posting the job. Sometimes the recruiter himself visits

the site and searches the resume of the suitable candidate on the website. But this facility

is not free naukri.com also charges from recruiters on account of letting them search the

resume on the website.

176

Page 177: timesjobs.com

(iii) Behaviour/Attitude of companies towards portals

The behaviour of the recruiters In the region where I was doing my summer training was

reluctant to take Timesjobs plan as they were more dependent upon conventional mode of

hiring. Most of the recruiters use two things in common for the recruitment purpose,

print media and job consultancies. Refral was also the third option. They feel the cost

for timesjobs.com is high, and also doubt about the quality of the services given by the

portals. Companies feel that the resume up gradation of timesjobs.com is not up to mark.

Many recruiters were using the job sites like naukri and monster and were pretty

satisfied, but showed a positive sign fir Timesjobs.com Companies in Patna are running

on small basis and hence they do not want to invest in job portals. One of the major

problems that I faced during the training was that the head offices of the corporate were

not present here and thus many of the companies referred us to the head office. The job

consultants showed a great deal of interest in our proposal as they find it really

interesting. Many of them even didn’t knew about the job portals. Companies want a

service which helps them to reduce their time for the recruitment process and makes their

recruitment process very easier. Many of the clients were using Timesjobs and few of

them also show their concern in continuing with the service.

(iv) Recruitment pattern in Patna

177

Page 178: timesjobs.com

Most of the recruiters don’t use the mode of e-recruitment in Patna. Well, in Bihar most

of the recruiters go for the following media:

Print: Print media is preferred because every newspaper or magazine has a reach

through out Bihar and the recruiters here need only candidates from Bihar. They

also said that print media is not too costly and the circulation is also good. The

kind of response they get is also good

Electronic: We are talking about electronic media but it is not through internet. It

is through television or FM radio. The companies go for the local television cable

channel and the cost for flashing the advertisement is sub divided into various

categories. So, recruiters prefer this mode.

Referrals: Many of the FMCG and insurance companies do not wish to spend a

single penny on recruitment process. So, the most convinient way they undertook

was of referrals

Job portals: Some top notch consultants and companies use job portals in Patna

and rely upon the. But whoever is using any job portal is satisfied and is planning

to continue with it.

Walk in’s: Walk in’s also a new trend in Bihar. Many new companies are going

for this trend. Many companies with few salary jobs are directly giving job by

short listing the resume.

178

Page 179: timesjobs.com

CHAPTER 7

FUTURE PROSPECT AND ACHIEVEMENTS

179

Page 180: timesjobs.com

In the next 5 years (2014), the e-recruitment market will grow in scale and importance.

Key trends will include. The development of more advanced tools such as sifting,

matching, handling management and application service provider type products that sit

on a client's own website, and a growing use of social networking technologies to reach

candidates, especially the passive jobseeker, stronger growth in the specialist sector of the

market — there will be only limited opportunities to launch into the generalist online

recruitment market in the next 5 years and more consolidation and a shakeout of the

smaller players and start-ups that fail to provide a quality value service for either

employers or jobseekers, or that do not invest sufficiently in their business. In addition,

there will be continued integration of offline and online recruitment, both within

recruitment companies and between online jobsites and offline recruitment companies.

This will still mean that the traditional boundaries that existed between print media

owners, job boards, recruitment advertising agencies, recruitment consultancies and

technology companies will be eroded. A new breed of `super suppliers' will develop,

capable of offering employers a range of online and offline resourcing.

A rapidly evolving e-recruitment environment

180

Page 181: timesjobs.com

A growing proportion of employers are using the online medium to recruit personnel.

Around two-thirds of employers use some form of e-recruitment. This is reflected in the

amount spent on e-recruitment display advertising which has risen strongly in recent

years. In 2006, Key Note estimates that online recruitment display advertising will be

worth £560m, compared with £315m in 2005. Growth in 2006 is expected to slow

compared with 2005, as the Internet market generally matures and as employment

prospects in 2006 worsen compared with those in 2005. The number of Internet

jobseekers continues to grow and will approach 9.5 million at the start of 2007. Based on

annual averages, the number of Internet jobseekers is estimated to have increased

between 2001 and 2006 by 266.7%. In 2006, this report expects jobsites to receive visits

from 23.9 million unique visitors on average per month. (Note: this is not the same as

number of online jobseekers, as one jobseeker might visit more than one site.)

We estimate that 26.5% of those using the Internet to look for work will eventually find a

job via the Internet. This implies that around 2.3 million jobseekers will have found work

via the Internet in 2006. Most applicants make their application by either filling in an

application form online or by e-mailing curriculum vitae (CV) to a potential employer.

We estimates that in 2005, 4.3 million jobseekers applied for a job via an electronic

means, while 1 million used offline means to apply.

In the last 3 years, Timesjobs.com has organized over 600 Job Fairs across the country,

which have succeeded in attracting in excess of 20,00,000 walkins & 2,50,000 'on-the-

spot' job offers. A recent study of 121 most popular websites in the country by online

research firm Juxt Consult has revealed Times Business Solutions brands TimesJobs.com,

SimplyMarry.com & MagicBricks.com as amongst the most User Friendly Sites in India.

With more than 50-lakh job applications floating around in the portal, TimesJobs.com has

been witnessing a record-breaking, mind-numbing

150 million page views a month, beating its nearest competitor hands and resumes down

with 120 million page views.

181

Page 182: timesjobs.com

While TimesJobs.com has 30.73 lakh active resumes (less than six months old), its

nearest competitor is 3.45 lakh behind with 27.29 lakh resumes. What’s more, the site is

leading across job verticals, including IT, sales, finance & accounting, marketing &

advertising and has become a coveted place to look for new opportunities. More

important, even for senior-level executive recruitment, where you have any number of

big-ticket head hunting agencies, TimesJobs is on the ball.

TimesJobs.com’s stellar performance in such a short period is backed by powerful value-

added services offered to its 20,000-plus clients including blue chip companies from

India and abroad TimesJobs.com, MagicBricks.com & SimplyMarry.com all scored

above 85% percentile based on usability aspects such as navigation structure & clues,

website design, company & contact information, contact responsiveness, branding and

Page 183: timesjobs.com

Experts believe that increase in Internet population, growth in sectors like software and a

change in the mindset of the audience will drive the future of the e-recruitment market.

Currently, bulk of the Internet recruitment business comes from software companies as

most of the software professionals seek jobs through the Net. As the penetration of

Internet grows rapidly, the profile of the job-seekers will expand and that will drive the

demand from traditional sectors like manufacturing also.

The Internet population in India is estimated to touch 60 million users in the next three

years. Research indicates that 35 percent of all Internet users search for jobs online which

is a good sign for the business. In terms of changing mindset, a large number of

companies have still reservations about the power of Internet to help them in recruitment.

In the next two years, as more and more employers taste success with their Internet

recruitment efforts, the mindset of the late-adopters will change and the market will

explode.

The verticals, which will witness a growth are IT and IT related categories, Banking and

Financial Services (BFSI) segment. “The Indian e-recruitment market will grow to Rs

400 crore by the year 2010 and there will be further consolidation in it, with one or two

jobsites dominating the category. In addition, contrary to popular belief, placement

agencies will benefit from the growth of jobsites to provide value-added services to their

clients. Earlier e-recruitment was considered as a competition by placement agencies,

today there is a change in the market perception. Placement consultants can immensely

benefit through this mode on account of faster reach, and also fast-mover advantage.

Next up on the cards, was Global Connect. Launched in October 2009, it allowed

candidates to connect their social media links to their resume. With TimesJobs

GlobalConnect, users have the option to link their professional online identities and work

to their TimesJobs.com resume.

The concept behind this new feature is that a candidate can link their chat ID’s, work

samples, professional profiles, etc, and by viewing the candidate’s GlobalConnect profile,

a recruiter will be fully informed of the candidate’s strengths and achievements before

they contact them for future interviews, thus reducing the interview time by half.

With the application of GlobalConnect on TimesJobs, candidates were able to project to

potential employers a comprehensive resume which – apart from the TimesJobs resume –

would also intelligently put his profile and work from sites like Linkedin, PeerPower,

Blogs, Slideshare , YouTube, Google docs etc, on the same platform. Global Connect also

enabled candidates to do such things as:

Connect Via Chat

Candidates can now chat with recruiters directly by simply adding their Gtalk, Yahoo,

MSN, ICQ, AIM, and Skype to their TimesJobs GlobalConnect profile.

Adding their messenger ID to your profile also allows them to cut their future in-person

interview in half. This is because when they add their messenger ID, it allows recruiters

to directly chat with them online while their resume is viewed.

Link A Site

Candidates can link a site to their very own TimesJobs resume! They can even add their

professional blog and/ or the websites of the companies they have worked for or

contributed toward.

This is an important feature through which recruiters can view samples of their work, and

see what they are like professionally.

188

Page 189: timesjobs.com

Showcase Your Work

Youtube videos, Slideshare and Google Docs can also be added to a TimesJobs resume!

Any types of samples of their work, a video resume, a voice clip (if they’re looking for a

voice-centered job), seminars they conducted, conferences they participated in, etc, can

also be added.

With these brand-new TimesJobs features, candidates were then able to professionally

connect to recruiters and allow them to view their professional profile without leaving

their workplace for a minute! Candidates who used Global Connect were able to give

recruiters an idea of who they were and what they could do before their interview call.

There is one more article which shows the achievement of timesjobs.com:

The battle for the number one position in online recruitment classifieds market has taken

a new turn. TimesJobs.com has taken out an advertisement saying “Everyone is quitting

naukri”, probably a pun-intended campaign against Naukri.com. TimesJobs claimed

3.075 million resumes which are 0-6 months old, while it said the the nearest rival (read

Naukri) has only 2.73 million active resumes.

In a page one article (a plug job for the group company) in The Economic Times,

TimesJobs.com has claimed that it is the number one jobs site with 150 million page

views a month, while the nearest competitor has only 120 million page views a month.

The article quotes Vineet Jain, MD of the Times Group: “We just put our heads down and

worked hard. A smartly differentiated product, backed by a great team, cutting edge

technology and superb communication did the trick for TimesJobs.com. Our

understanding of new media helped us cracking the market in less than three years.”

Now the battle for number one position is being hijacked by TimesJobs. It used to be

Naukri versus Monster India earlier. Sanjeev Bikhchandani, MD of Info Edge Ltd, the

owner of Naukri.com, could not be reached for comments. However, our sources suggest

that Naukri is “reviewing the matter, and will come out with a response in a few days

time”. A rival of TimesJobs told ContentSutra that the company has encouraged

duplication of resumes.

189

Page 190: timesjobs.com

What are the options for Naukri now: It can either come up with its own campaign with

their own set of numbers to counter TimesJobs claim. Or Naukri can take TimesJobs to

court for using the phrase “Everyone is quitting naukri”. An industry source told

ContentSutra: “The latter option is a possibility but may not be the smartest option,

though.” So it’s likely Naukri will come up with a counter campaign. Watch this space.

Sanjeev Bikhchandani, MD of Naukri.com, responds:

1. As per Alexa and Comscore, Naukri remains by far the leading job site in India. On

Alexa the three month reach of Naukri at 855 today is thrice that of TimesJobs which is at

257. According to Comscore, Naukri got more than 2.3 million unique users in February

as compared to slightly more than 1.3 million of Timesjobs.

2. In fact, as per Alexa, TimesJobs has slipped to fourth place behind Clickjobs.

3. The statistic that TimesJobs is referring to is “Active” resumes in the last six months,

not total resumes. Here TimesJobs has a different definition of “Active” as compared to

Naukri. In TimesJobs, if you open a job alert email and click on a job in the email to go to

the site you are treated as an active user. In Naukri, you are an active user only if you

update your CV or apply for a job or are a new registrant. We do not count clicking on a

job in a job alert as being “Active”.

CHAPTER 8

FINDINGS

195

Page 196: timesjobs.com

In the region where I was doing my summer training was reluctant to take

Timesjobs plan as they were more dependent upon conventional mode of hiring.

Most of the recruiters use two things in common for the recruitment purpose, print

media and job consultancies. Refral was also the third option.

They feel the cost for timesjobs.com is high, and also doubt about the quality of

the services given by the portals.

Companies feel that the resume up gradation of timesjobs.com is not up to mark.

Many recruiters were using the job sites like naukri and monster and were pretty

satisfied, but showed a positive sign fir Timesjobs.com

Companies in Patna are running on small basis and hence they do not want to

invest in job portals.

One of the major problems that I faced during the training was that the head

offices of the corporate were not present here and thus many of the companies

referred us to the head office.

The job consultants showed a great deal of interest in our proposal as they find it

really interesting. Many of them even didn’t knew about the job portals.

Companies want a service which helps them to reduce their time for the

recruitment process and makes their recruitment process very easier.

Many of the clients were using Timesjobs and few of them also show their

concern in continuing with the service.

All the companies entertained the proposals of timesjobs, and nobody saig a big

no to us. The proposal suited everybody’s pocket and hence it was out of

nobody’s reach.

196

Page 197: timesjobs.com

Companies want a customized or tailored solution which should be a

technologically sophisticated service.

Companies feel that they can’t spend much for recruitment process and the

attrition rate is also very low. That is the reason why they prefer to have an instant

solution like reference, consultants and newspaper advertisement.

Only upper and middle class people are enjoying with the timesjobs.com services.

So jobsites find solutions to join lower class people with the services given by e-

recruiters.

The job seekers in Bihar were more interested in job consultant rather than going

for a job portal as they were not too sure about the service.

197

Page 198: timesjobs.com

CHAPTER 9

SUGGESTIONS

198

Page 199: timesjobs.com

Need of advertisement is lacking in cities like Patna. The people are reluctant to

invest in job portals and are not sure about its services.

It should identify the actual needs of the society and make efforts to identify their needs.

The advertisement should be in print media so that the viewers can read all the

details in a detailed manner.

A regional centre of Timesjobs.com should be opened in cities like Patna so that a

better control of the region should be in hands of the company.

Company should attract more consumers to lead in the market

In order to give awareness, timesjobs.com can conduct various types of seminars

in educational institutions so that they can know about it and can update their

resumes.

Timesjobs.com conduct job fair for medium town or cities also because there is a

huge potential in these town and cities.

A voice customer care centre should be there for its client or customers. Presently

it is providing online solution

Visit by technical specialist or auditor should be must at least twice in a year.

Companies confuse about the services provided by the timesjobs.com.

Job fairs can create more databases for each job seekers and job provider.

Some job seekers don’t have proper ideas about companies for their jobs and also

some companies are facing problem with recruitment. So timesjobs.com can

provide solutions for their problem with the help of job fair.

199

CHAPTER 10

CONCLUSION

200

Page 201: timesjobs.com

Job portals industries yet to capture the recruitment market, but it are in growing stage. The

growth of the industry in developing developed and under developed countries is directly

proportional to the internet penetration across the globe. Now a day’s people prefer online

recruitment solutions. A growing use of social networking technologies reach candidates,

especially the passive jobseeker, stronger growth in the specialist sector of the market. Patna e-

recruitment market is also looking for a tremendous growth. Various players are in the market

and also internet penetration is also getting higher. The Internet population in India is estimated

to touch 60 million users in the next three years. Research indicates that 35 percent of all Internet

users search for jobs online which is a good sign for the business. According to a recent report,

which shows the Indian e-recruitment market will grow to Rs 400 crore by this year 2010. So

there is a huge growth for e-recruitment industry and which will make the recruitment process

easier.

Patna has a potential market for timesjobs.com but due to lack of awareness job provider

do not use it. Timesjobs.com is in growing stage in Patna hence to provide information

about it job fairs help a lot. In the coming future due to increase of internet user’s

timesjobs.com user will increase hence to maintain this increment after sales services is

must. To provide more information about this like technical and non technical customer

care should be must.

concentrated approach has made TimesJobs.com the blue-eyed boy of recruiters and

aspirants alike.

As part of our CSR activities, TimesJobs.com also forged alliances with The Indian Army

- TimesJobs.com was the only website with the wherewithal and credentials to tie up with

their placement agencies. TimesJobs.com collaborated with the Indian Army Placement

Agency (APA), to leverage the skills of the retiring army personnel in facilitating their

entry into the corporate world, and successfully established the website solution -

www.apa.co.in in 2005.

In February 2006, the company launch of its Gulf portal, ae.TimesJobs.com, becoming

the first Indian job site with an international footprint. The Gulf portal is intended as a

platform where companies based in Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Qatar,

Saudi Arabia and UAE, converge with talent from India to satisfy their HR requirements.

Not only that, residents of this region can apply for jobs in Gulf countries and India,

through ae.TimesJobs.com.

203

Page 204: timesjobs.com

Most recently in October 2009, TimesJobs Global Connect was launched that enabled

users to link all their professional online identities and work to their TimesJobs.com

resume. A candidate can link their chat ID's, professional profiles, websites, blog links,

embed work samples, etc. in their TimesJobs.com Resume.

Timesjobs has been an achiever since its inception. There has been major key events

which timesjobs.com conducted and there are also various milestones which it passed.

Not very old but it showed its competitor that having a great database and concentrated

team can easily climb the ladder of success. The events are in the form of job fairs such

as North Region, East Region, West Region and South Region

A Market Research study conducted by HT Careers in association with NFO-MBL-India

has confirmed that naukri.com dominates online recruiting with a market share among

recruiters of 48 percent as compared to Jobsahead with 30 percent, Jobstreet with 9

percent and Monsterindia with 4 percent. The study confirmed that naukri.com is the

preferred job site used by corporates and is a clear market leader with a market share that

is greater than all the other leading job sites put together in India. The survey was

conducted amongst leading companies, from across industrial sectors in New Delhi,

Mumbai and Bangalore.

The services offered by the company are:

Database Service

Job Posting Service

HixeXS International and Gulf

Visibility Services

Other Services

Job Refresh Packages

204

Page 205: timesjobs.com

User License

Other Rec Visibility

Non Rec Visibility

These are a variety of services and provides a complete solution to the customers need.

The economic growth of Timesjobs has been good since its inception. Since 2004, it has

shown an upward growth. But during the recession the condition was not good.

Timesjobs.com is very flexible and accepts payments in installments. Taxation policy is

also like that it charges 10.3 percent tax. The stage in the lifecycle is of Growth and I

hpoe it will continue for sometime.

Timesjobs.com has nothing to do with the environmental rules and regulation and hence

there is no constrain over this factor. But yes, if we talk about taxation policy then it

charges a tax of 10.3 percent and also pays tax to the government. It is basically a

database provider so to provide the database of one country to another is no barriers. The

students if are applying for the jobs need to follow all the policies. If we talk about

political stability then one thing should be kept in mind that it works on pan India basis

and there different political regulations.

Timesjobs comes under the brand name of TBSL (Times Business Solution Limited)

which belongs to the Times of India Group. Operating under such a good brand name is

itself a strength for the company. This at least shows that the job portal is well

established and it is having a good man force.

Strong database of job seekers and employers. Timesjobs is having a strong database of

jobseekers with around 8000 job seekers added per month on an average. Now, many

would say that this is a bit less as compared to naukri and monster. But if we see the age

of all the job portals then the kind of success stories Timesjob has created in un

comparable.

205

Page 206: timesjobs.com

The database of Timesjobs is not bad but when we compare it with others then its pretty

less. The database of job seekers as compares to naukri and monster are quite less. The

recruiters also feel the same and while choosing the job portal they feel a bit insecure by

the fact. This could be due to nascent stage of Timesjobs.com as compared to other job

portals. Timesjobs is operating on a regional basis and the workforce is not distributed

evenly in all regions. For ex. in the east region there is less workforce for the small

cities like Ranchi and Patna is not available and the recruiter has to consult the head

office of the region to buy the plans manually.
