These residents have been what I think of as “two-way miracles.” Families have told us that the compassionate care provided by our loving staff has been “miraculous,” and by touching our staff and other residents, these residents have been “miracles-in-our-midst.” We love getting emails and notes about miracle-moments that our staff enables. Here’s a sampling from a few notes recently received: A PAL compliment was written by the shaking hand of a 94-year-young resident (writing it was a labor of love): “Does good work. Is always Prompt. Is Trustworthy. Is Dependable. Should be Promoted. Is very kind.” Another from the daughter of a new resident: “Just wanted to drop you a note telling you how happy my mom is! She can be your poster child.” And another: “You guys are amazing how you handle this and communicate everything so quickly, professionally and with a loving message...” Another about a PAL: “I absolutely LOVE being around her and can see what joy she brings to my parents’ day. I can’t describe her enthusiasm but it is highly contagious...she apparently gets my dad to dance on a regular basis and I myself found myself dancing too!! She truly makes my heart sing.” If one were to ask for a mission statement, can you think of a better one than making hearts sing” :)?! I’m reminded of the salient and prescient words of an old Jimmy Buffet song, “Growing Older But Not Up”: “Let the winds of change blow over my head, I’d rather die while I’m living, than live while I’m dead!” Good stuff! Making hearts sing and enjoying miracles in our midst while we live...that’s what it’s all about! It’s hard to believe that we’re already into June. If there’s anything we can do to assist, don’t hesitate to let us know. Here’s to Singing Hearts!

Different Strokes forSwimming Folks

We are hosting water aerobics5 days a week. View the calendarand please join us.

Breaststroke. The most popularstroke for beginner and casualswimmers, the breaststrokeresembles the swimmingtechnique of a frog. Both armsmove simultaneously from thechest in a heart-shaped motionand meet again at the chest whilethe legs perform a circularfrog-kick.

Front crawl. The front crawl iscommonly known as the freestyle, since it is the preferred stroke infreestyle events due to its speed. Each arm is brought one at a timeover the swimmer’s head and backinto the water, while the legsalternate in a flutter kick.

Butterfly. Often considered boththe most beautiful and difficultswimming stroke, the butterflyrequires the swimmer to beginwith both arms above the head, then pull them simultaneouslydown through the water and bringthem back up to break the surface. An undulating dolphin kick isused, keeping the legs together.

Backstroke. This technique isvery similar to the front crawl butis performed while on the back, with the swimmer facing up. Thebackstroke can be a beneficialworkout for people withback pain.

From the Desk of EmilyDawson, DRCS, RN,

MSN, MBAExtreme summer temperatures

can be dangerous for people of allages, but seniors are especiallyvulnerable. Heat isn’t justuncomfortable, it can have seriousconsequences. As we age, bodywater content decreases andseniors often have diminishedthirst, which leads to reducedfluid consumption. Medicationscan make our residents moresusceptible to dehydration andfluid loss. Dehydration is aleading cause of hospitalizationsand increased mortality ratesamong the elderly population. Many medical conditions areassociated with dehydration, including elderly confusion, impaired cognition, falling andconstipation. A very importantpart of our residents’ day is staying

hydrated. Every person is differentin the amount of fluids required, but fluid amounts should beadequate enough to keep urineoutput consistent and light incolor. A good rule is to drink a fullglass of water with medications, and easily accessible fluids are animportant necessity. When goingout of the building, it is a goodidea to pack along a bottle ofwater, especially in these hotsummer months ahead!

Brimming With ShadeBefore heading out into the

sunshine, top your head with awide-brimmed hat. Fashionablefor both women and men, thehats offer added protection fromthe sun, along with sunscreen. TheAmerican Cancer Society advisesthat hats made of tightly wovenfabric provide a better shield fromultraviolet rays than those madefrom canvas or straw.
