The roadwalks were well reported on Facebook by British M65 dual gold medalist Ian Richards:

Latest from an extremely hot Izmir. About 40 degrees today for 20km men and 10k women with no shade for first half ofrace. Not quite as good a result as for the 5k but still individual gold, silver and bronze plus team gold. Both men's and ladiesraces were combined, starting at 5 o'clock. With a number of younger sub 95 min 20km walkers on the start line a fast pacewas possible but caution prevailed because of the heat... apart from myself as I found myself in the lead going through 1kmin 5m 03 and still in 3rd after 2km. Hung on to finish 10th in overall race, winning age group easily by over 15 mins. Behind,Roger Michel and Peter Bosko, still a relative newcomer, continued where they left off in the 5k, up with the best in their agegroup. They both suffered, however, over the second 10km. Roger still managed 3 rd while Peter finished 6th to ensure GBwon gold in the M65 team race. Not too far behind, Ed Shilabeer repeated his 5k form to again take silver but a lot closer towinner Peliccia - just 1m 23s. Fiona Bishop and Lin Farrow both acquitted themselves well in their 10k, Fiona finished 5 th

having had a real try to get a medal while Lin finished 6 th getting the better of our Irish friend Anne Gormley - a great resultin her first championships.

A couple of other notable results - the great Christof Hoene took bronze in the M70 in a time of 2.19.38 while Fabio Ruzzier, another former international (88 min 20k and 4h 6 50k), took silver in the M60 in 2.05.38. Those who decided to stay awaybecause of the heat missed some great racing - it's the same conditions for all and still great fun. News from the EVAAcouncil with some details of the non-stadia championships in Italy next May, non-stadia championships in Lisbon in 2016and the possibility of a masters international attached to a training camp next year to follow.

OUT AND ABOUT

• For those of you who like a technical read, check out the 11 page document Tapering for competition: A review whichdiscusses the science behind tapering, written by Yann Le Meur of the Institut National du Sport:http://www.researchgate.net/publication/232700861_Tapering_for_competition_A_review?ev=prf_pub.

• If you are interested in progressing your walking and thinking of doing some summer competition with Athletics Victoria, this page is a must read for you: http://athsvic.org.au/generalnews/8-points-of-summer/. It is a beauty and succinctlysummarises what's involved. Well done on a great webpage, AV.

• We don't see too many books written about walkers so I highly recommend you consider buying Chris Maddock's newbook Money Walks. It traces his career through 5 Olympics, with all its ups and downs. I competed against Chris in the1982 COmmonwealth Games in Brisbane and then saw him walk in the 2000 Olympic 50km in Sydney - he had a long andillustrious career. And it's cheap! Check it out at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Money-Walks-Chris-Maddocks-ebook/dp/B00CEZTH8U/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top. It is available in both kindle and traditional book format.

• ABC radio program The Body Sphere aired a program called Talking About Walking on ABC Radio National last Sunday -and it featured short interviews with Australian Olympians Chris Erickson and Regan Lamble. You can download orlisten at http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/bodysphere/talking-about-walking/5694562. Their interviews start ataround the 12 minute mark.

• The Pacific School Games is back on the agenda after a 7 year hiatus (it was last held in 2008). It is scheduled to be held inAdelaide from 21-29 November 2015 and will cater for teams from all States and Territories of Australia and from otherPacific countries. See http://www.pacificschoolgames.edu.au for the full announcement.
