You're reading one of the most unique catalogs inmodel railroading. In any scale or gauge, ourhobby can be a time machine, taking us back tothe trains of another era and the world theyinhabited. But only in tinplate do the modelsthemselves hark back to the toys of another peri-od, the pre-World War II decades of the twenti-eth century. Tinplate trains are the toys of a time

when silent movies and then radio were among the chief forms of entertain-ment - a period when playthings and entertainment were not intended to berealistic, but to serve as springboards for a child's imagination.

In this world it was entirely plausible for a toy train company to advertise ashiny, cartoon-like locomotive as an amazingly realistic model of the latesttechnology on rails. This was the world of tinplate, inhabited by brightly-col-ored toys that were masterpieces of the toy-makers art, only loosely relat-ed to the real world, and a favorite toy of almost every boy in America. Thiswas the world in which one manufacturer's slogan was "Ives toys makehappy boys," and a huge amount of advertising appealed directly andspecifically to Boys. Being a Boy in the early part of the twentieth centurywas truly something special, because Boys had the best toys.

This is the world that inhabits this and every Tinplate Traditions catalog. Youcan experience the same excitement that a child felt when receiving thesetoys as a holiday or birthday present seven or eight decades ago. The firstM.T.H. catalog in 1983, printed in black and white, offered reproductions ofthe No. 9, No. 381E, and No.408 Standard Gauge locomotives. Today weare the only company in the world offering a full line of Standard Gauge andO Gauge tinplate trains, track, and accessories that faithfully duplicate themagic of the pre-war tinplate era.

We think you'll find much in this latest catalog to delight your eyes and earsand the child in every one of us. Appearing for the first time in the TinplateTraditions lineup are models of the 4696, 390, and 249 steam engines; 8E,318E, and 3236R electrics; and 2600 Series and 180 Series passengercars. If you're looking for accurate replicas of the original tinplate toys, weoffer models that duplicate their original colors and mechanisms. Or ifyou're looking for the spirit of tinplate updated for the twenty-first century,we also offer tinplate models with new paint schemes and the smoke, sounds, speed control and other features of our Proto-Sounds 2.0 soundand control system. We invite you to turn the page, step into our timemachine, and enjoy the magic that was - and still is - tinplate toy trains.

Only M.T.H. offers you the choice of enjoying tinplate trains that per-form just like new toys of eighty years ago, or updated with moderntechnology. Many Tinplate Traditions locomotives are offered inboth Traditional and Proto-Sound® 2.0 configurations.

Traditional versions don't just look like the pre-war originals; theyoperate like them, too. Traditional locomotives feature open-frameAC motors and mechanical E-units (reverse units) for operators whowant to recreate the full tinplate experience - complete with buzzingE-units, growling motors, and the smell of ozone in the air!

Proto-Sound® 2.0 versions feature the same accurate, nostalgicappearance on the outside but the latest M.T.H. technology inside. The complement of Proto-Sound® features offers today's tinplateoperator more fun than a child of the 1920's or '30's ever dreamed of:

Great smoke: Our steam engines feature fan-driven Proto-Smoke, the most powerful smoke system in the hobby.

Speed control and slow speed capability: Original Tinplatelocomotives often had two speeds: fast and faster. M.T.H. locomo-tives feature Proto-Sound® 2.0, our unique sound and control systemthat allows our engines to throttle down to a slow crawl, highballdown the main line, or maintain any speed in between. TheLocomotive Speed Control built into Proto-Sound® 2.0 acts like thecruise control on a car, keeping your train moving at the speed youselect, regardless of hills and curves.

Synchronized chuff and puff: Like a real steam engine,M.T.H. steamers feature puffs of smoke and steam chuff soundssynchronized with the drive wheels. Better than any other toy train,an M.T.H. locomotive portrays the drama of a steam engine s-l-o-w-l-y chuffing and puffing as it pulls out of a station and gets up to speed.

Vivid engine sounds: Proto-Sound® features digital recordingswith CD-quality playback. Press the transformer whistle/horn but-ton to hear the wail of an electric locomotive horn or the melody ofan authentic steam whistle. Press the bell button to alert passengersto your trains arrival or departure. And steam chuff sounds varyautomatically depending on how hard your engine is working.

Station sounds: Proto-Sound® passenger engines offerPassenger Station Proto-Effects, a complete arrival and departuresequence that you can activate from your transformer. Freightengines include Freight Yard Proto-Effects, a symphony of freightterminal sounds.

Remote uncoupling: Our O-Gauge Proto-Sound® steam locomo-tives offer remote uncoupling anywhere on your layout, controlled fromyour transformer. The opening of the coupler is accompanied by thehiss of air hoses parting and the clank of the coupler knuckle opening.

Produced from 1931 to 1939, the 400E was thebest standard gauge steamer that money couldbuy. In the late 1930s, a 400E with a train of pas-senger cars would set you back about 75 dollars the same as a train trip from Chicago to SanFrancisco, including a sixteen-day stay in the cityby the bay. The 1931 catalog that introduced the400E depicted a real engineer praising the modelto a pair of knicker-clad boys: Just like minesays Bob Butterfield, engineer of the 20thCentury Limited. Apparently the engineer of theNew York Central 4-6-4 Hudson ignored the factthat the 400E was short one set of drivers, toenable it to negotiate standard gauge curves. While the 400E is best known for pulling the BlueComet passenger set, it is also one of only twosteamers to be cataloged with the large 200-series freight cars.

In 1929, steam engines reappeared in the Lionel standardgauge lineup after a six-year absence. The new 390 steamerand its smaller sibling, the 384, were available with manualreverse or as higher-priced E models with electronic reverse.Among the many paint schemes offered for the 390 was theoriginal Blue Comet two-tone blue with cream stripe, based onthe Central of New Jersey luxury train inaugurated earlier thesame year. The 390 was offered with matching 300-series pas-senger cars as well as the larger 420-series Blue Comet cars.Within a few years, however, the 390 would cede its position atthe top of the lineup to the massive 400E that, pulling the same420-series Blue Comet cars, would become a toy train legend.

New for 2007, M.T.H. introduces the 390E in two of its origi-nal paint schemes, with matching 300-series passenger sets.Enjoy this standard gauge steamer with a 1930s-style open-frame Bild-a-Loco motor and electronic reverse, or with mod-ern Proto-Sound® 2.0 electronics with sound, cruise control, and puffing smoke.

With not a touch of modesty, the 1931 AmericanFlyer catalog introduced the firms new standardgauge steamer: The magnificent realistic widegauge Steam type locomotive Model 4696 is afaithful reproduction of the crack B. & O. locomo-tive President Washington. The faithful design isa striking example of scale reproduction. It is con-ceded by the most critical to be the finest minia-ture model ever made. In fact this descriptionhad a lot of truth to it. Of course Flyer, like Lionelwith its 400E, ignored the fact that the prototypelocomotive had one more set of drivers than themodel. But Flyers fully die-cast steamer withadded-on brass parts was arguably better pro-portioned and more accurately detailed thancompetitive sheet-metal models from Lionel andIves. Cataloged from 1931 to 1935, the top-of-the-line 4696 was introduced at a price of $43.50,the equivalent of several weeks pay for an aver-age worker.

New for 2007, M.T.H. introduces this replica ofperhaps the best-proportioned standard gaugesteamer ever made. Like the original, our modelfeatures a die-cast engine and tender, but with-out the metallic impurities that caused many ofthe original castings to deteriorate drasticallywith age. Enjoy the 4696 in the original black orin several attractive new paint schemes withyour choice of a 1930s-style open frame motor ormodern Proto-Sound® 2.0 electronics with soundand puffing smoke.

The 318 was a classic of the tinplate era, a medium-pricedengine produced in a variety of colors that remained in theLionel catalog for twelve years, 1924-35 - a longer productionrun than perhaps any other tinplate loco. The 1925 catalogdescribed the 318 as "Introduced in response to a greatdemand for a single-super-motor locomotive built on the linesof our 402, but smaller and contains many of the construc-tional features of the larger engine." Like most LionelStandard Gauge equipment, the 318 was sized according toprice: it was about two-thirds the size of the more expensivetwin-motored 402, although both engines ran on the samegauge track. Also in common with the 402 and a number ofother Lionel engines, the 318 was based loosely on the pro-totype New York Central S-type boxcab - although the Lionelversions were less sharp-edged and arguably handsomerthan the real thing.

The 318E ("E" for electronic reverse) joins the TinplateTraditions line for the first time in 2007, in four of the origi-nal 1920s and '30s paint schemes. Pair this engine with amatching set of 300 Series passenger cars to experiencewhat made boys happy eight decades ago.

The 1930 Lionel catalog trumpeted the release of the firmsvery first O gauge steam engine: Boys here is the mostremarkable O Gauge Steam Type Locomotive that hasever been produced. Dozens of blue prints and photo-graphs of famous new locomotives from railroads all overthe country were examined, and the best features of eachwere utilized by Lionels Engineering Department in design-ing this locomotive. It is built for speed and power. It is low, long, graceful and sturdy. Complete with its Pacific type oil-burning tender, it represents a miracle of model railroadengineering.

This New Lionel O Gauge Steam Type Locomotive iselectrically-driven by the famous Lionel Bild-a-Locomotor the motor that snaps out in a jiffy, and then canbe taken apart and quickly reassembled by any boy.

The rhythm of its double action pistons and driving rods ischaracteristic of a great Mogul of the Rails. It will be thepride of every boy who owns one.

This top-of-the-line steam engine from 1930 through 1935returns to the Tinplate Traditions line for 2007. And whileits gleaming exterior is pure 1930s, our 260E with Proto-Sound 2.0 runs smoother than any original tinplate locomo-tive, delivering huge plumes of puffing smoke and a clang-ing bell and wailing whistle guaranteed to delight childrenof all ages. Our 260E is also outfitted with a Latch-TypeProto-Coupler that can be remotely activated by thetransformer to uncouple from its trailing cars. Pair thisengine with a set of 710 Series or 2600 Series passengercars, or 2800 Series freight cars, to experience the best ofboth the 1930s and the 21st Century.

The Lionel catalog for 1936 introduced the new 249 as a highspeed powerful conventional locomotive with chrome plated trim-mings and a wealth of embossed details. While smaller and lessexpensive than the 260E and its successor the 263, the 249shared the same motor as its larger brethren. Cataloged until1939, the 249 was part of the last hurrah of tinplate. When the249 disappeared from the line, the production of high-quality,sheet-metal trains had passed into history.

New for 2007, M.T.H. introduces the 249 locomotive and match-ing 600 Series passenger cars (see page 38). Relive the colorfulfinal days of tinplate with the added excitement of Proto-Sound®

Looking much like two loaves of bread joined by a crackerbox, the Milwaukee Roads Bi-Polar electric engines were aperfect example of heavy machinery of the 1920s. Theirowner and General Electric, their builder, delighted in stag-ing pulling contests such as a 1924 Battle of the Giants,in which a Bi-Polar easily won a tug-of-war against a pair ofsteam locomotives, a 2-8-0 consolidation and a 2-6-6-2 mal-let. With that kind of publicity, it seems no surprise that twoeast coast train makers chose this west coast engine as theprototype for their top-of-the-line Standard Gauge electrics:the Ives 3245R and the Lionel 381E.

The Ives version turned out to be one of the last productsdesigned by Ives and bearing the famous brass nameplateMade in the Ives Shops. The so-called short hood3245R (R for remote reversing) came on the market in1928, just as Lionel and American Flyer were taking overtheir bankrupt rival. The more impressive long hood ver-sion was cataloged in 1929 and 1930, the last years of pro-duction at Ives own factory, and this version returns to theTinplate Traditions lineup for 2007. A product of the so-called transition years for Ives, the original 3245R camewith Lionel pantographs and Lionel flag holders on its pilots, and was sold with cars borrowed from the firms new own-ers. In 1929 the Ives engine was trailed by American Flyercars with Ives nameplates, trucks, and couplers. Around1930, when Lionel became the sole owner of Ives, the longhood 3245R came with Lionel passenger cars sold as theIves 240 series, with Ives decals and a unique black andorange paint scheme to match the engine.

The Ives 3245R graces the Tinplate Traditions line again in2007, offered in Ives original black and orange paintscheme and three new might have been colors. Enjoy thisunique replica of one of the last hurrahs of a great trainmaker, complete with matching Ives 240 Series cars, witheither a traditional tinplate open-frame motor or the soundsand operating features of Proto-Sound® 2.0

When Lionel and American Flyer took over Ives in 1928, thebig prize for Lionel was the rights to the Ives reversing unit. The Ives drum-type electric reverse was far superior toLionels own pendulum-type reverse, and the Ives designeventually appeared throughout the Lionel line.

For four years after the 1928 takeover, the Ives nameremained alive during what collectors call the transitionperiod, as the Ives factory was eventually shut down andremaining parts used up. One of the products of the transi-tion period was the Ives 3236R, which was actually a Lionel8E body on an Ives frame. The frame was carried over froman earlier Ives electric-type locomotive. At the time, the3236R was probably superior to the straight Lionel product, because the Ives version had the better reversing unit. The3236R was offered in 1929 and 1930, and was often soldwith Ives 180 Series passenger cars (see page 37).

New for 2007, the 3236R joins the Tinplate Traditions line ina variety of original paint schemes, as well as a black andyellow version offered here for the first time. Enjoy this tran-sition era locomotive with either a traditional open-framemotor or all the bells and whistles of Proto-Sound® 2.0.

Loosely based on a New York Central boxcab, the No. 8 wasLionel's lowest-priced Standard Gauge engine. But eventhis bottom-of-the-line model had flash and charm. Twinheadlights allowed for night running, and a pantograph, whistle, and handrails adorned the roof. A brass insert, sometimes painted in a contrasting color, provided the win-dow frames, number boards, and ventilator inserts on eachside. Each pilot had flag holders, and shiny air tanks, journalboxes, and springs decorated the frame. The 1925 catalogextolled the virtues of the new addition to the line: "Thislocomotive contains the latest Super-Motor and is one ofthe very latest types of electric locomotives now being usedon big electrified railroads." A new No. 8 with manualreverse would set a boy or his parents back $11.50 in 1925.The 8E, with electric reverse, was introduced the followingyear at $17.75. Both the manual and electric reverse mod-els remained in the catalog through 1932, and were pro-duced in a myriad of colors.

New for 2007, the No. 8E joins the Tinplate Traditions line inseveral authentic paint schemes, as well as an orange ver-sion produced here for the first time. Enjoy the clatter of a1920s tinplate engine with a Traditional model with open-frame motor, or experience the sounds, cruise control, andother features of Proto-Sound® 2.0.

The year was 1927 and the 408E was at the top of its class. The

power-packed twin-motor Standard Gauge locomotive was a child

of the earlier 402, but the 408E held its own on the family tree.

Unlike the 402, the 408E boasted large collapsible pantographs

that were better proportioned to the engine, more intricately

designed trim, and marker lights on each end, in addition to the

headlights. Ignoring real railroad practice of red markers to the rear

and green markers to the front on certain trains, the 408E oddly fol-

lowed nautical tradition: red lights on one side and green on the

other.

When the larger 381 hit the scene in 1928, it knocked the 408E out

of the top spot. It didn't take long for the 408E to step out of the

new locomotive's shadow, however. The single-motor 381 didn't

have the power to pull its accompanying train, the Transcontinental

Limited. Known among collectors as the "State Set," the

Transcontinental Limited had four 21 ½" coaches - the largest

Lionel ever made - and the 408E powered its way to the front of the

line because it had the might to pull them.

Our superb replica of the 408E returns to the Tinplate Traditions line

for 2007 in four new paint schemes. Add this twin-motored

Standard Gauge behemoth to your collection and experience the

majesty of one of the most impressive toy locomotives ever made.

Like the 4696 steam engine on page 6, AmericanFlyer 4000-series freight cars were less stubby-look-ing and more realistically proportioned than the tin-plate trains of other manufacturers. The same longer, lower look would characterize the S-gauge toy trainsmade by American Flyer in the 1950s, after the com-pany had been sold to Gilbert and moved fromChicago to New Haven.

Tinplate passenger trains - faithfully re-created from stamped metal components - and generallyboasting bright, colorful enamel paint are not meant to be accurate reproductions of real trains. The attractive liveries found on the 2004 418 passenger sets are an excellent example of howcolor and realism can be mixed together in the tinplate category. Regardless of the deco scheme, these cars match their original counterparts from the early 20th Century detail for detail, featurefor feature.

Even model train manufacturers recognized that not all trav-elers got to their destinations by rail. Consequently, several"transportation toys" debuted early in the history of modelrailroading and were marketed to tinplate model railroadersas accessories for their layouts.

The No. 85 Race Car Set of 1912 - 1916 was the forerunnerof the slot car era of the 1960s. Two tinplate racing cars, fea-turing rubber tires and cast driver and mechanic figures, spedaround a two-lane oval. Powered by a standard AC trans-former, the cars would zip around the track with pickupssparking and motors whining.

The No. 85 set returns to life in the Tinplate Traditions lineand can be expanded with additional straight and curved sec-tions of track. This limited-run item is a must for any collec-tor looking to recreate the full range of tinplate productsoffered in the early years of the last century.

No tinplate layout is complete without air travelfor its citizens. The No. 55 Remote ControlAirplane and No. 49 Airport, originally catalogedfrom 1937 - 1939, provide a unique solution thattakes your eyes up and above the bustling railyards and mainlines.

A self-powered airplane circles the airport belowwhile you control its height, steering the planethrough climbs and dives with two remote-con-trol joysticks. Attached to a metal pylon, the air-

plane receives its power from a built-in powersupply hidden inside the pylon. Plug it in, grabthe joysticks, and you're off and flying.

Few of the original No. 55 Airplanes survived thebumps and crashes from landings.Consequently, finding an original in good orexcellent condition is a rare experience, makingthis unique reproduction a great choice for mosttinplate enthusiasts.

There is a newway of controllingmodel railroadstoday that you'vegot to see to

believe. It's calledDCS (for Digital

Command System) andit's the most revolution-

ary product to hit modelrailroading since locomotives first

became equipped with sound!

Unlike traditional or conventional means of operating amodel railroad, command systems allow the user to inde-pendently control each engine even if other engines are onthe same track at the same time. The concept has beenaround since the early 1990's, but only DCS makes itsimple and easy to use thanks to its state-of-the arttechnology and intuitive interface.

Upgrading to DCS unlocks more features than youll find inany other command control operating system features thatare factory-installed in every Proto-Sound® 2.0 train set loco-motive. Heres just a partial list of what DCS offers:

WIRELESS HANDHELD THROTTLERun your whole railroad locomotives, accessories, every-thing from one or more DCS handheld remotes. An LCDscreen indicates which engine youre controlling and its cur-rent speed, adjustable in one-scale-mile-per-hour increments.Program engines and accessories on the same screen. Fornighttime operation, turn on the screens backlight.

COMMAND CONTROLOperate up to 99 DCS-equipped engines independently atthe same time on the same electrically continuous track using one or several DCS wireless handheld remotes. Whenyou have guests, give each visitor a DCS handheld and letthem control their own engine. Just like the prototype, you candouble-head locomotives, add or drop helper engines, or bringa train into the station with a mainline engine and then have aswitcher break up the consist.

PROTO-SOUND® 2.0 ENGINE SOUNDSDCS offers individual control of dozens of sounds built intoevery M.T.H. locomotive. Rev the diesel motor up manuallybefore moving your train. Activate auxiliary sounds such assteam letoff and crew conversations. Whistle, bell, andsteam chuff or diesel prime mover sounds even have inde-pendently adjustable volume control.

TRAIN SOUNDSAdd ambience to your railroad with the variety of trainsounds built into Proto-Sound® 2.0. The DCS handheldgives you access to effects such as wheel clickety-clack,coupler opening sounds, and the Doppler effect of a trainpassing by. DCS also offers one-button activation of thePassenger Station or Freight Yard Proto-Effects builtinto every Proto-Sound® 2.0 locomotive.

SMOKE CONTROLAdjust the smoke intensity for a steam or diesel engine at anytime from the DCS remote.

CONSTANT LIGHTINGBecause DCS operates with a constant voltage onthe rails (most operators use 18 volts), engine, caboose, and passenger car lights are always on at aconstant intensity. No more lights-out when a pas-senger train arrives at a station!

PROGRAMMABLE OPERATIONRecord up to 90 minutes of DCS speed, direction, and sound commands as a program that yourengines can repeat on demand. Use this feature torun trains automatically on one part of your rail-road while you manually control another area.

UPGRADABLE SOFTWAREUnlike any DCC or any other command sys-tem, DCS is designed to be upgradable overthe Internet. The latest software can be down-loaded to any DCS system ever made, so newfeatures can be added and your investment willnot become obsolete.

TMCC® COMPATIBILITYAdd a Lionel® Command Base to your DCS sys-tem and you can run engines equipped withTMCC® (Lionels TrainMaster® CommandControl) side-by-side with DCS engines - all fromthe DCS handheld controller. If you prefer, you caneven use a Lionel CAB-1® handheld to controlTMCC engines at the same time youre controllingProto-Sound engines with the DCS controller.

LISTEN TO YOUR FAVORITE TUNES WITH PROTO-CASTDCS is the only command control system thatlets you hook up any audio source and playyour favorite music right through the train!

BE YOUR OWN DISPATCHERWith DCSs built-in remote microphone, real-timeradio dispatch calls are just a button push away.

INTUITIVE MENUS ALLOW YOU TOPROGRAM, SELECT, AND CONTROLENGINES, SWITCHES, AND ACCESSORIES.

COMMAND CCONTROL EEXPLAINED

In conventional operation, an AC or DC trans-former varies track current to adjust enginespeed and direction. Command systems suchas DCS, however, put a constant voltageon the track (around 18 volts for DCS) andvary speed by telling each engine how muchof that voltage to use. Command controlallows different engines to do different things- like run at different speeds, go in differentdirections, or make different sounds - evenwhen they are on the same track.

In the DCS system, commands such asspeed, direction, and sound control are sentas radio signals from the handheld throttle toa TIU (track interface unit). The TIU trans-lates those radio signals into digital informa-tion that is sent through the rails and pickedup by a receiver in the appropriate engine -telling it to go, for example, 37 miles per hour, blow the whistle, smoke more heavily, or anyother command. DCS locomotives can alsosend information back to the handheld to letthe operator know what they're doing.
