Context Acadia is a historical region of Canada which consists of eastern Quebec, northern New Brunswick, northern Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

While the official province of Acadia has been gone since the 18th century, the present-day inhabitants of the region have maintained a strong Acadian cultural identity distinct from the rest of French Canada. The Acadians have their own folk songs, style of fiddle-playing, cuisine, flag, and even their own distinct dialect of French called Chiac.

In Canada, August 15th is officially National Acadian Day. On this day, Acadians hold a tintamarre: a parade through the town in which instruments and improvised noisemakers are used to make as much noise as possible to assert the presence of the Acadian people and demonstrate their solidarity.

In Chiac, the word ‘tintamarre’ means ‘loud noise’ or ‘commotion’.

Notes from the composer As an Acadian myself, this piece is essentially a kind of kaleidoscopic image of my musical heritage. There are no direct references or quotations of Acadian folksong; however, the fabric of the piece is interwoven with fundamental elements of Acadian music such as stylistic rhythmic and melodic tropes, modal scales, drones, fiddle techniques, and ornaments along with my own contemporary harmonic language as to create something new which is celebratory and joyful.
