• You can clean the dust covers with a mild household cleaner while they’re off.  Wear gloves to keep your hands cleaner. A vacuum with a hose and nozzle attachment can be used to vacuum the duct first.  

• The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests that the air-handler should be inspected every year and ductwork every two. When these inspections show that the system has significant contamination, they recommend it be cleaned at that time.
