* In 1525 Henry VIII wanted an annulment from his Catholic wife Catherine of Aragon. The Pope said no.

* Henry VIII was furious about the Pope limiting his power and married Anne Boleyn anyway.

* Henry urged Parliament to start the Church of England, which was independent of the Catholic Church. Made king head of the church (Act of Supremacy).

* In 1547 the Holy Roman Emperor forced people in German cities to convert to Catholicism. This started a civil war.

* The Peace of Augsburg it treaty that stops this war in 1555.

* It allows each prince to decide which religion his region will follow. Northern German became mostly Protestant - South Catholic.

* In 1534 Huguenots (French Protestants) started to protest the Catholic Church. This starts a civil war (Protestants v. Catholics) in 1560.

* To end the war Henry of Navarre (Protestant) converts to Catholicism and takes the throne (Henry IV).

* Edict of Nantes (treaty) makes France a Catholic country but allows Protestants to worship in peace.

* In 1555 Philip II (Catholic) inherits the Netherlands (Protestant country) and set up an Inquisition.

* Dutch people rebel for 75 years and get help from Queen Elizabeth I of England.

* Spain sends its mighty armada to attack England, but it is destroyed by the English fleet. Spain's power weakens.

* Starts when the Holy Roman Emperor attacks Protestant rebels in Prague (Czech Republic) in 1618.

* Denmark, France and Sweden join in against the Holy Roman Emperor.

* Ends in 1648 with the Treaty of Westphalia - lets people practice their own religion even if its different than the king.
