![Page 3: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Hopes & Dreams
• Students name their hopes and dreams.
• The children and
teacher then use these hopes and dreams to create rules for the class to live by.
![Page 4: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Examples
![Page 6: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Rule Creation
• Brainstorm with students on what they need to make a productive, calm classroom where everyone feels safe and people and classroom resources are respected and their hopes and dreams can be realized
• You may include your non-negotiables!
• Categorize rules and post them• Model what the rules look, sound
and feel like• Periodically review rules• NEVER assume, the students should
know them by now!
![Page 7: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Modeling & Role Playing
• All rules and procedures are extensively modeled
• First teacher models• Provide structure role playing so
students can practice and give explicit feedback to them
• NEVER model what they are not supposed to do
• NEVER assume that students should know how to do things by now.
![Page 8: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Examples of Environmental Print
![Page 9: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Transitions
• What will do when students enter the room?
• How will you collect homework?
• How will you pass out materials?
• How will you collect materials?
• How will you get student’s attention?
• How will you end the class?
![Page 10: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Teacher Language
• Use words and tone as a tool to promote children's active learning, sense of community, and self-discipline
![Page 11: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Teacher Language
• Be direct and authentic• Use a gentle, warm neutral tone• Show faith in children’s abilities and intentions• Keep it action oriented• Keep it brief• Know when to be silent
![Page 12: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Teacher Language
Reinforce
•“Stephanie, you have your eyes on me, you look like you are ready to listen to the story.”
•“Zach, you picked up the pieces of paper that were on the floor, you are doing your part to keep the classroom clean.
Remin
d
•“Everyone needs to go to the meeting area now so we can begin morning meeting.”
•“ Eric, what steps can you take to help you solve this math problem?”
•To the class, “Who can remember…” “Who can remind us…” “How should we …”
Redirec
t
•“Megan, put your pencil down and look at me.”
•Rachel, stop working and close your book. “
•“ Vaiva, reset.”
•“Amanda, Buddy Room.”
![Page 13: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Avoid
• Statements that make you the person that needs to be pleased
• General statements• Paraphrasing students after each comment to give it
validity (let students do that for each other)• Praise …it works like punishment, when the praise giver is not
there, students will not do the behavior. Instead our language should try to encourage and empower children to make their own thoughtful decisions.
![Page 14: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Know when to be silent
• Provide (and model!) wait time (three to five seconds)
• Speak more slowly• Be a skillful listener• Avoid repeating directions, rather use a
reminder phrase if necessary
![Page 15: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
ENERGIZERS
• Energizers are activities you can use with students to break up the class, get the blood flowing into the brain.
• Use when students seem lethargic• Build them into logical breaks during the class
period
![Page 16: TIS responsive classroom powerpoint](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081413/54857382b4af9f820d8b4e02/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
