Tisha B’Av Services to beheld at Ohev SholomTisha B’ Av commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem in 586 BCE and 70 CE respectively, and is the culmination of a three-week period that begins on the minor fast day of the 17th of Tammuz, observed this year on Monday-Tuesday, June 28-29. It is a day of mourning and fasting on the Jewish calendar.
Tisha B’ Av, the 9th of Av, will be observed during the evening service on Monday, July 19, and at morning and afternoon services on Tuesday, July 20. This year Congregation Beth Shalom will join Temple B’nai Jehudah and Congregation Ohev Sholom in their sanctuary at 5311 West 75th Street, Prairie Village, Monday evening, July 19, in this observance. Ma’ariv begins at 8:30 p.m., and will be immediately followed
by the chanting of Megillat Eikhah, the Book of Lamentations. It is customary to dim the lights and read by candlelight or flashlight during the chanting of Eikhah. It is also customary to sit on the floor during Eikhah and to stand during the rest of the service, if one is able.
On Tuesday, July 20, Tisha B’ Av Shacharit services will begin at 7 a.m., and include a Torah reading and Eikhah, at our Wornall campus. (On Tisha B’ Av, we do not wear tallit or tefillin in the morning.) Minchah services will begin at 6 p.m. at Wornall, when we will wear our tallit and tefillin, and read Torah and Haftarah.

Join the Jewish community at the Heartland Torah Marathon, as we read the Torah, from start to finish, in one session. Co-sponsored by the Rabbinical Association and the Jewish Federation, we’ll meet at the Jewish Community Center on Saturday evening, October 2 and read, non-stop, through the next afternoon.
The idea of our member, Peter Shapiro, the concept has been embraced by our clergy and a wide segment of the community. It was created to nurture new Torah readers, re-energize those who haven’t read in some time, and give everyone an opportunity to expand their level of study and experience.
The requirements are simple: If you’re Jewish and you want to read Torah, you’re eligible. Recently we have had special Shabbat morning services and Kiddush luncheons honoring our minyanaires and Torah readers. Gitta Azorsky and her family generously honored all those persons who work to make our daily and Shabbat minyanim happen. All those persons mentioned in the May Scroll and the May 22 Shabbat brochure have enabled congregants like Gitta to say Kaddish for recently departed loved ones, commemorate yahrtzeits, and fulfill the daily obligation to prayer.
As in the past, Bill Kaiser’s family has sponsored the beautiful yadim that are given as gifts to congregants who for the first time chanted Torah at least three times during the year. These silver pointers aid the Torah readers in keeping their place and prevent unnecessary touching of the parchment. Last month, we gave out 10 yadim to honor Torah readers.
We are blessed to have so many congregants who can lead services and chant Torah, and we are adding to our ranks all the time. B’nei Mitzvah often return to chant Torah at shul, with the encouragement of Hazzan Menes. Sandy Suffian and Josh Sosland coordinate the readers at our various minyanim. Several adults will learn to chant Torah over the coming year in our adult B’nei Mitzvah class, others learn or re-learn for their children’s B’nei Mitzvah,
while still others just learn lishmah, for its own sake. I would like to recommend a wonderful event that seeks to both nurture new Torah readers and re-energize those who have not read the Torah in a long time. The Heartland Torah Marathon will bring together members of the Kansas City Jewish community at the Jewish Community Campus to read the Torah from beginning to end, starting Saturday, October 2,after havdalah. The reading will continue until it is finished, sometime around mid-afternoon on October 3. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The original idea came from our own Peter Shapiro. Jeff Blackman is one of the lead coordinators and recruiters. This event is brought to you by the Rabbinical Association and CAJE: The Educational Arm of the Jewish Federation. Steppin’ Out’s next program will be held on Sunday, August 15at the Lamar campus. The evening begins with a cookout dinner at 6 p.m. followed byentertainment by Tony Antonucci, talented local singer. Tony is an entertainer reminiscent of the days of the “Rat Pack,” performing the hits of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Neil Diamond and a host of other memorable artists.
Tony performs at various venues in the Kansas City Metro area and on some of the largest cruise ships in the industry. In 2002, he was the opening act for Joan Rivers at a Kansas City event.

If you haven’t spent Friday night at Beth Shalom in a while, this is the year to come and experience lively and wonderful services and programs. The ritual committee, staff and clergy have exciting plans for most every 4th Friday of the month during the year ahead.
For example, imagine an exciting evening with something for everyone: our young families might come at 5:30 p.m. for a “LaMishpachah Nosh (Family Snack)” with singing and stories by our clergy. At 6 p.m. a spirited traditional Friday night service could be held in the Katz Chapel while an instrumental and joyous “T2K” styled service with Yachad would be held in the library. After services and Kiddush, the Gesher program might go into a wine and cheese reception for dozens of young adults while a congregational dinner and program is held in the Cumonow Social Hall. This plan brings major parts of our congregation together in services, while enjoying specific programming before or after services for their own interests or groups. We are excited by this vision developed by our “T2K” subcommittee under the leadership of Sheldon Wishna. It responds to surveys of our members and the enthusiasm of our clergy.
Of course, on every Friday night we have wonderful services, but keep your eye out for “4th Fridays.” Whatever you are looking for, you can be a part of it at Beth Shalom.

As you plan your summer trip, it is easy to bring Judaism along. Take the time to teach your children to appreciate nature and to praise God and to bring Shabbat with you no matter where you are. I would like to suggest a few things to add to your packing list. How about putting together a Shabbat bag? Include candle-holders, candles, a Kiddush cup and a small bottle of juice. You can get bread or rolls for saying the Motzi. For havdalah, all you need are two Chanukah candles, juice, and spices.
Did you know that anyone can say a blessing or brakha? A blessing is a very simple way of inviting God into your midst and begins with the traditional brukha formula of Barukh Ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha’olam, “Praised are You, Adonai our God, King of the Universe,” and then continues with the subject of the blessing. In our siddur, Sim Shalom, there are several pages of blessings. If you cannot travel with a siddur which has all the blessings you need for Shabbat, havdalah, eating and for the wonders of nature, stop in the religious school office and we will be more than happy to give you a copy. Have a safe and happy summer!

As I reflect on the past two years, many images of a challenging and busy term arise. Despite feeling like I was permanently “on call,” I admit that the rewards have been tremendous. It has been an honor to serve as President.
The reality of my position meant delegation beyond just the officers and board. I was touched by those who heard my pleas and stepped forward to help. I am especially proud of the accomplishments of the website committee, Casino Night and the new directory. They are excellent examples of initiatives that succeeded through a healthy partnership between staff and volunteers. We now have a volunteer advisor and a volunteer coordinator who are working to improve the vitality of our committees.
Leading our efforts have been the officers and board of directors. In the past two years, we have brought in two new rabbis, written a strategic plan, attempted a merger, eliminated the executive director and business manager positions, completed a process review, and engaged a consultant for a governance audit. Our group will be remembered by these events and also for increasing communication with the rest of the congregation. Although we still have critical financial decisions ahead, we made significant progress with our financial problems, primarily by identifying and controlling expenses. However, we were challenged with decreasing revenues and the mixed blessing of two buildings. The officers and board have tackled some serious policy issues through
thoughtful discussions. I thank each person who is finishing their term this year for your dedication: Ron Cooperman, Milisa Flekier, Clint Gillom, Jeff Katz, Janet Mark, Ernie Rosenthal, and David Sosland.
Among the jewels of our congregation, we have the daily minyan, Sisterhood, Kiddush Corps, USY, our schools, innovative programs, traditions, and a strong sense of community. None, however, are more important that the dedicated people who work here. I want to recognize the staff for the work they do, each and every week of the year. Pam, Andi, Norm, Bob, Jill, Linda, Stef, Jennifer, Meredith, Judy, Patti, Hazzan Menes, Rabbi Stein and Rabbi Tobin. It has been a pleasure working with each of you. I appreciate your patience with me, your support for me and your professionalism. You are a fine team.
As I pass my gavel to Kurt Kavanaugh, I wish him and the congregation much success.

My husband and I began discussing our religious path long before our wedding nearly eight years ago. Raised in a Catholic family, I have since been on a complex and evolving religious journey. Our diverse religious backgrounds combined with the realities of modern married life instigated considerable discussions and reflection. There were priests and rabbis, baptisms and baby namings, Easter and Pesach to ponder. I took time to consider who I was as a person and to reflect on how I wished to raise our daughter. We now balance our Jewish home and life with all of the added responsibilities that our diverse religious upbringings might suggest. We’ve met many wonderful people in the Jewish community who have helped to shape, guide and educate us. We have learned to celebrate the religious diversity with our families while maintaining a singular and united Jewish home life. The knowledge that I received from Tamara Lawson Schuster, who taught the Mother’s Circle Program, has been an ongoing and invaluable resource to my family. Judy Jacks Berman, the Director of RFEC, leads a talented group of educators and provides a solid foundation for my daughter’s Jewish identity. I appreciate the influences which have guided us on our journey thus far and for the opportunities which Beth Shalom continues to provide to us.

Todah Rabbah from Abe Meth...Dear Friends of Beth Shalom,Lillie’s passing on March 24 changed my life. 71 years of happily married life came to an end and left an emptiness inside me which will take a long time to heal; she was my partner. We left Kansas City and Beth Shalom 32 years ago, however, I have received many cards of sympathy and consolation. These are an eloquent testimony of the rich legacy she left behind and the many friends she made. These notes have given me a great deal of consolation and comfort. Thank you for your thoughts. It eases my sorrow knowing that many people loved her and were equally saddened by her passing. Thank you, and may her memory be a blessing to all of us. -Abe Meth

Book of Remembrance CardsBeth Shalom Sisterhood invites you to renew your membership or become a new member. Benefits include Jewish learning through the Sarah Peltzman classes, development of leadership skills and participation in community activities.
Our volunteers staff the Beth Shalom Gift Shop and produce an excellent yearly congregational calendar. Sisterhood supports synagogue programs such as the Rose Family Early Childhood Education Center, the Polsky Religious School, USY’s
Kinnus convention, and many community events, and we host several yearly luncheon or dinner meetings, including the Torah Fund luncheon, a 61-year old Passover tradition. Additionally, we help to sponsor and participate in the Sisterhood Shabbat/Kaplan Scholar-In-Residence Weekend.
Annual dues are $30. A membership brunch on Tuesday, October 19 will thank ongoing members and welcome new members. For dues paid by September 19, an “early bird” brunch price will be available. Sisterhood Wants YOU – As A Member!
Sisterhood is launching a new project to help Safe Home “tell” and “show” how its organization’s goal is to help break the cycle of domestic abuse in Johnson County. To become BETTER informed about this important topic and to “see” how Safe Home tries to accomplish its goal, Sisterhood members can sign up to attend a one-time (1 hour and 15 minute) lunch, talk and tour of their facilities on the 3rd Friday of every month. Space is limited, (12 to 15 people) and offered only 12 times a year. The Sisterhood Gift Shop has beautifully designed Book of Remembrance tribute cards for anyone who wishes to send holiday greetings, recognize important life events, offer
congratulations or support to relatives and friends, or in honor of someone’s memory. Our newly designed card features a picture of The Creation by Israeli artist Kopel Gurwin that was stitched in needlepoint by our Sisterhood ladies. The original hangs in our sanctuary. These cards are always available in the Gift Shop for a six dollar donation each or six cards for thirty dollars. For more information or to request cards, contact the Gift Shop at 913-647-7298.
