COMM-130 | VISUAL MEDIA

DATE | October 25, 2015

PROGRAMS USED | Adobe Photoshop

DESCRIPTION | This is a montage I was asked to create.

OBJECTIVES | Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow Unify a layout

with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images togeth-

er gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple

elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image. Apply typography principles (titles,

quotes, events or scriptures…your choice). Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying

text size. Theme word(s). Select good quality images.

PROCESS | I used Photoshop and specifically I used many masks and blending brushes to overlap

the images and make them one cohesive piece with an unbelievably clear message.

Logos

COMM-130 | VISUAL MEDIA

DATE | October 31, 2015

Programs Used | Adobe Illutrator

DESCRIPTION | This is a presentation of three different possible logos I was hired to create

for a security company called Big Brother Security.

OBJECTIVES | Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal

image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.

Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to

them. Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated

flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to

trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.) Refine one logo with varia-

tions for color.

PROCESS | The logos were designed from scratch in Adobe Illustrator. I used the pen tool to

draw the original design. I then manipulated it with the anchor point tool to get it just right. I

used the FOCUS principles to make the design work as well as possible. First I formulated my

idea and then I organized my ideas of how I could accomplish this. This is where the idea of

using sunglasses came from. I then decided to keep the design as simple as possible and only

add the BB and the small recording light at the top. This created contrast and interest without

cluttering up the design. I then looked at the wording and tried to tie it into the design with my

font choices. Then I simplified by taking everything out that was not absolutely necessary.

DATE | November 7, 2015

PROGRAMS USED | Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

DESCRIPTION | This is a letterhead I created from scratch for a completely unique and original

design.

OBJECTIVES | Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company

or personal image. Don’t use photos or live trace. Use the new logo to design a letterhead. Letterhead

should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Apply typography rules, keeping small

copy. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space. Include

contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or

spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

PROCESS | I used the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator to create the logo. After completing the logo

I opened InDesign and create the the letterhead. I added some crisp lines to add interest. I also used

the logo as a watermark bleeding off the page to add interest. I used the tutu from the logo as it’s own

element in the letterhead to place the logo on top of. The clean, sharp and thin lines represtent the

ballet style well.

Brochure

COMM-130 | VISUAL MEDIA

DATE | December, 6 2015

PROGRAMS USED | Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

DESCRIPTION | This is a bi-fold brochure I was asked to create using an original logo,

four quality images with text wraps.

OBECTIVES | Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo

and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images,

not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign

so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy in

at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex

(two-sided) color.

PROCESS | I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool and manipulating

the line styles. The brochure was done completely in Adobe InDesign. The text wrapped

images were cropped in Adobe Photoshop. I used repetition, typography and contrast in this

design. I knew I wanted it to look neat and clean. with some bright and some toned down col-

ors to grab the readers attention while still representing the peaceful nature of prenatal yoga.

PROGRAMS USED | Microsoft Word

DESCRIPTION | This event ad is for a charity 10k run from which all of the proceeds go to Primary

Children’s Hospital I created using only microsoft word.

OBJECTIVES | Comprehend image sizing. Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-

bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use

only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

PROCESS | I used only Microsoft Word to create this ad without any outside help from more expensive

editing software. I wanted a unique running photo for the piece. Once I found it I chose my color schemem

which I wanted to be somewhat fun and childlike but still professional. It is afterall a children’s hospital. I

left plenty of white space. to balance the larger photo in the backgroud.

margins for printing.

PROCESS | First, I used Adobe Illustrator to create an original logo using the pen tool. I used Notepad++

to create this web page. In addition, I used theHTML validator at http://www.w3.org/ to check for any errors

in my code. This web site provides a great double check especially for those who are not coding professionals

such as myself.

Photodesign

COMM-130 | VISUAL MEDIA

DATE | October 18, 2015

PROGRAMS USED | Adobe Photoshop

DESCRIPTION | This is an advertisement I was asked to create for a German Shepherd Rescue

company who really wanted the photo to stand out and represent the beauty of this particular dog

breed.

OBJECTIVES | Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those

colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then

download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE

(non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5×11 page layout. Use layers to

design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop. Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8

inch (0.125) from all four sides.

PROCESS | I used Adobe Photoshop to edit the photo and to add all of the design elements. I used

plenty of lead room which created a photo where the dog looks like he is in his natural environment and

that the photo was not forced.
