Title iGait: Objective gait assessment for hip and knee arthroplasty - iGait Background The Sint Maartenskliniek is a specialized hospital for posture and movement in the area of Nijmegen. The hospital has a long-standing tradition in fundamental as well as clinical research in orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation medicine, rheumatology and associated disciplines. Type of internships For a new study at the orthopaedic department of the Sint Maartenskliniek, we are looking for an enthusiastic student human movement sciences to set up data collection, collect, analyze and report data from wearable sensors to evaluate gait in patients before and after hip or knee replacement surgery. The main aims of joint arthroplasty in patients with osteoarthritis are to reduce pain and restore mobility. To evaluate success of joint arthroplasty an objective and sensitive measure of mobility is lacking. The importance of gait evaluation after joint arthroplasty is emphasized by the fact that gait patterns of THA/TKA patients deviate from their healthy peers, both pre-operatively and post-operatively. After joint replacement, left-right asymmetry during walking is common, as well as gait speed and other spatiotemporal parameters such as stride length and stride duration. These changes are meaningful as performance on gait tasks is an important predictor for activities of daily life, fall risk, and even mortality. The developments of inertial sensors and algorithms for gait facilitate fast and mobile assessment of gait. In this research project we will use performance-based gait tests using wearable sensors, to obtain an objective and sensitive measure of mobility that can be used as an indicator of the success of knee and hip arthroplasty. This is a prospective cohort study, comparing pre- to post-operative changes in gait of THA and TKA patients, and compare them with age-matched healthy controls. The study will take place at the Sint Maartenskliniek in Nijmegen and Boxmeer. Type of students and duration of projects This research internship best suits a Master student Human Movement Sciences. Start and duration of the internship can be coordinated with the supervisor. Contact Dr. Katrijn Smulders [email protected] 024-3272731 https://twitter.com/movingresearch

Title iGait: Objective gait assessment for hip and knee arthroplasty - iGait

Background The Sint Maartenskliniek is a specialized hospital for posture and movement in the area of Nijmegen.
