Watch this clip and write down the words which you associate with the man

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSPwqV8CNG0

Did anyone write the word ‘metrosexual’

Bob Connell suggests that masculinity is changing. He says that in addition to the hegemonic type of masculinity, there are now other types. Some sociologists believe that a ‘new man’ has emerged. This type of man is in touch with his feminine and emotional feelings and shares domestic duties with his partner. DO YOU AGREE??

Mort (1996) highlighted the emergence of metrosexual men- these are heterosexual (straight) men who are concerned with image.

How many males can you think of from the media who you would label as metrosexal?

Discuss: Why do you think there has been an increase in this type of man?

Where have the traditional men gone?Task:Read the sheet you have been given

and write a paragraph or bullet points to identify reasons why traditional/hegemonic masculinity may be experiencing a ‘crisis of masculinity’.

e.g. Decrease in masculine jobs and increase in girls succeeding in education.

Watch this clip- what does it tell you about gender role and socialisation?

Was there a clear difference between the boys and girls career ambitions?

A key word that was used by a lot of the girls was ‘help’. They wanted to help people or animals and go into more caring types of work. Whereas the boys were more interested in jobs such as spies, soldiers and science related jobs.

What does this tell us about traditional gender roles? Both for males and females..

Research! You will be creating a mini research project (very mini!!) to

find out more about gender role socialisation. In pairs- design a questionnaire to find out about people’s

perceptions on gender roles.Include:-Equal numbers of male and female participants-Teachers and pupils, so you can compare different age groups-Between 5-10 questions.Remember you want to find out what people believe about

gender roles e.g. traditional views such as women staying home/doing ‘caring’ type jobs. Do boys want traditional masculine jobs?

By tomorrow- Have your questions planned, so I can go through them with you!

It might be a good idea to work with someone who has studied Sociology at GCSE as they will have more knowledge on conducting research and questionnaires.

Plenary: Do you think traditional views are a thing of the past? Why?
