“The Weight of Glory” C.S. Lewis

“Spells are used for breaking enchantments as well as for inducing them. And you and I have need of the strongest spell that can be found to wake us from the evil enchantment of worldliness which has been laid upon us for nearly a hundred years. Almost our whole education has been directed to silencing this shy, persistent, inner voice; almost all our modern philosophies have been devised to convince us that the good of man is to be found on this earth.”

“The Weight of Glory” C.S. Lewis

“And yet it is a remarkable thing that such philosophies of Progress or Creative Evolution themselves bear reluctant witness to the truth that our real goal is elsewhere. When they want to convince you that earth is your home, notice how they set about it. They begin by trying to persuade you that earth can be made into heaven, thus giving a sop (false concession) to your sense of exile in earth as it is. Next, they tell you that this fortunate event is still a good way off in the future, thus giving a sop to your knowledge that the fatherland is not here and now.”

“The Weight of Glory” C.S. Lewis

“Finally, lest your longing for the transtemporal (across time) should awake and spoil the whole affair, they use any rhetoric that comes to hand to keep out of your mind the recollection that even if all the happiness they promised could come to man on earth, yet still each generation would lose it by death, including the last generation of all, and the whole story would be nothing, not even a story, for ever and ever.”

What good thing must a person do to enter the kingdom?

I. You must do more than just keep the commandments (16-19)

Matthew 19:16-19

16 “Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” 17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” he inquired.”

Matthew 19:16-19

18 “Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Heaven” interchangeably. 1. Eternal life focuses on the quality and nature of the divinely enhanced life.

What good thing must a person do to enter the kingdom?

You must abandon all to follow Jesus (20-27)

Matthew 19:20-27

20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Matthew 19:20-27

22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

Matthew 19:20-27

25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” 26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”

Luke 14:25-27

“25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

Matthew 19:28-30

“29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.”

III. You must be willing to sacrifice immediate gratification or earthly

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

APPLICATION

• What enchantment has you deceived? If you rebel against God’s word something is blinding you to the truth.

APPLICATION

• The commandments show you what reality looks like when you not under to evil spell of sin. It gives us a picture of what the perfect life looks like. God is not trying to hold anything good from you- in fact, he is longs for you to follow Him so that you may have a better quality of life.

APPLICATION

• God has taken the initiative to free you from sins evil spell. It is through Jesus. God saw the control that the evil spell of sin holds over us and knew we could not be delivered from its grasp until he intervened.

APPLICATION

• The only enchantment to break the spell of sin is the sacrificial death from of someone who will die in our place to take upon Himself the penalty of our sin, break the bondage of sin and grant to us His righteousness. Jesus, as God, is that perfect ultimate sacrifice who died in our place. He has broken the bondage of the condemnation and power over sin in our lives.

APPLICATION

• Our part is trusting in Jesus alone and abandoning all else in order to faithfully and obediently follow Him. That which we give up will be replaced with something superior and eternal. Won’t you trust in Him?

• "Ironically, last week I said to three different people, 'I wish I had her life, look at her life—she's always somewhere fabulous and fancy. You think, here's someone who has it all. You just never know.'"

• The article concluded, "While the chasm between Scott's marketed life and her actual life came as a shock, she was just one of countless New Yorkers who secretly fake their fabulous lives."
