The Need The need for learning and certification of knowledge andpractical skills in metrology has been recognized byprofessional organizations such as the CoordinateMetrology Society (CMS) and major industrial end users. The link between the fundamental core principles, coretechnological measuring equipment and the development ofhigher educational standards is key for the future for anyprofessional development in metrology



The Importance The importance of formally recognising training and

education in metrology is key. The UK’s national standards organization, the National

Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Coventry University have been involved in setting the standard within dimensional metrology and beyond.

The process includes exploring the fundamentals of metrology at the user level and developing students to start questioning and planning in a positive manner through to the analytical mindset required at foundation degree level.



The Understanding Organisations measure what they make but many have a

limited understanding of their measurement process, their capability and value to their organisation

It is important to fill the specific gaps in skills and provide an understanding and application of measurment

Foundation degrees are vocational qualifications which have been specifically developed through consultation with employers to ensure that the learning and skills required are those of the employers needs.
