helicopters were inducted into the Indian Air

Power of India to set up the gas-based

Government of Bangladesh signed an

agreement with Reliance Power of India to

set up 750 Mega Watt gas-based power plant

in Meghnahat near Dhaka.

The construction of the plant will be

completed by 2022.

A Memorandum of Understanding has

also been signed with Petro Bangla to

set up 500 Million standard cubic feet

per day LNG terminal at Kutubdia

Island near Chittagong in Bangladesh.

The US and 10 ASEAN navies begin first joint

military exercises in Southeast Asia

The United States and 10 Southeast Asian countries

kicked off maritime drills

The first ASEAN-US Maritime Exercise

(AUMX) between the regional bloc and

Washington will last for five days, starting

September 2 at the Sattahip Naval Base in

Thailand and ending in Singapore.

The drills come at a time of stepped-up U.S.

engagement in the region and tensions

between Beijing and Southeast Asian nations

over the South China Sea.

Indo-Lanka Joint Naval Exercise SLINEX 2019

The annual Joint Indo-Lanka maritime fleet exercise

- SLINEX 2019 is scheduled to be held from 07

September 2019.

Sri Lankan Navy is sending two ships to India

to participate in the exercise with the Indian

Navy.

The offshore patrol vessels, SLNS Sindurala

and Suranimala left Trincomalee on are

scheduled to arrive at the port of

Visakhapatnam.

The week-long exercise will be attended by

323 Sri Lankan navy personnel including the

commanding flag officer of the naval fleet.

INS Tarkash at Lagos, Nigeria

As part of Indian Navy's Overseas Deployment to

Africa, Europe and Russia, Indian Naval Ship

Tarkash made a port call at Lagos, Nigeria for a

three-day visit.

The port call has been scheduled to celebrate

the 60th anniversary of the establishment of

diplomatic relations between India and

Nigeria.

INS Tarkash, commanded by Captain Sathish

Vasudev, is one of the most potent frontline

frigates of the Indian Navy equipped with a

versatile range of weapons and sensors.

The ship is part of the Indian Navy's Western

Fleet and under the Operational Command of

Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western

Naval Command, based at Mumbai.

Tarkash will also undertake a Passage

Exercise at sea with NNS Unity on 08 Sep 19,

which will enhance interoperability between

both navies.

World Suicide Prevention Day: 10 September

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an

awareness day observed on 10 September every year.

The day is observed to provide worldwide

commitment and action to prevent suicides,

with various activities around the world since

2003.

The day is organized by the International

Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP).

24th World Energy Congress to commence in

Abu Dhabi

The 24th World Energy Congress will commence in

Abu Dhabi under the patronage of Sheikh Khalifa bin

Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab

Emirates.

The four-day World Energy Congress aims to

bring together international energy

stakeholders, including governments, private

and state corporations, academia and media.

With over 15,000 participants expected,

Congress is set to welcome over 250 high-

level speakers, 72 Ministers, 500 CEOs, 1000

media persons with 40,000 square-metre

exhibition space that will cover the entire

energy spectrum.

The theme of this World Energy Congress is

‘Energy for Prosperity’ which also represents

the ambitious and dynamic energy transition

of the country.

Vietnam opens Southeast Asia's largest solar

power farm

Vietnam has inaugurated Southeast Asia's largest

solar power farm which has the capacity to produce

688 million kWh of electricity annually.

Israel PM announces intention to annex Jordan

Valley

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

announced his intention to annex the Jordan Valley,

a large swathe of the occupied West Bank if he wins

next week's election.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967

but stopped short of annexation.

Palestinians claim the whole of the West

Bank for a future independent state.

Netanyahu previously insisted Israel would

always retain a presence in the Jordan Valley

for security purposes.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib birth Centenary: 2

International Awards, 5 Academic Chairs to be

set up

Bangladesh government has made elaborate plans to

celebrate the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sheikh Hasina said that the government will

set up two international awards and establish

five international chairs to commemorate the

birth centenary of Bangabandhu.

The Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh has

initiated a process to set up five

'Bangabandhu Chairs' abroad including at the

University of London and Visva Bharti

University in India.

Prime Minister Hasina said that a

Bangabandhu centre will be established at the

University of Cambridge and sculptures of

Bangabandhu will be installed at Madame

Tussauds Museum in London and the United

Nations Headquarters in the New York.

The government of Bangladesh has decided

to celebrate the ‘Mujib Year’ from March 17,

2020, to March 17, 2021, to mark the

centenary year of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,

the first President of Bangladesh.

to join India-led International Solar Alliance

Saint Vincent and Grenadines became the 79th

country to join the International Solar Alliance

(ISA).

The International Solar Alliance is a group of

121 solar resource-rich countries with

headquarters in Gurugram, India.

The organisation aims to deploy over 1,000

gigawatts of solar energy and mobilise more

than USD 1,000 billion into solar power by

2030.

The UK announces two-year post-study work visa

for all foreign students

The UK government announced a two-year post-

study work visa for all international students who

will be coming into the country from the academic

year 2020-21.

This new graduate immigration route will be

open for all international students, including

those from India, who have completed a

degree at an undergraduate level or above at

an institution approved by UK Higher

Education Provider.

This will allow international students to stay

in the UK after they complete their studies for

a period of up to 2 years to work, to look for

work.

Scientists identify the largest flying animal in

history

Scientists unveiled a new species of pterosaur, which

is among the largest ever flying animals, according

to a study from the Queen Mary University of

London.

The pterosaur's name ‘Cryodrakon boreas’

roughly translates to 'frozen dragon of the

north wind' in tribute to the landscape of the

Albertan winter.

Cryodrakon boreas was a flying reptile with

a wingspan of up to 10 metres which lived

during the Cretaceous period around 77

million years ago.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Marcin Przydacz

inaugurated the museum in Kolhapur, where around

5000 Polish people took asylum during the World

War-2.

A Memorial Museum was built to

commemorates the asylum seekers.

When Poland was caught between Adolf

Hitler’s Germany and Josef Stalin’s Russia

during the Second World War, a stream of

refugees made their way to Valivade village

in Kolhapur district, 235 km from Pune.

World Bamboo Day is observed every year on the

conserving and promoting the bamboo industry.

Known as poor man’s timber, bamboo is

Restructured National Bamboo Mission was

approved by the Cabinet Committee on

President of Mongolia Khaltmaagiin Battulga is

arriving in New Delhi on a five day State visit.

Mr Battulga will be accorded ceremonial

reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati

Bhavan.

During his stay, the Mongolian President will

visit Agra, Bodh Gaya and Bengaluru.

Mr Battulga's visit to India will be the first

International Day of Peace: 21 September

The International Day of Peace, also known as World

Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned day

observed annually on 21 September.

It is dedicated to world peace, and

specifically the absence of war and violence,

ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian

aid access.

The day was first celebrated in 1981 and is

kept by many nations, political groups,

military groups, and people.

World Rhino Day: 22 September

World Rhino Day is observed every year on 22

September.

It is a global event established to celebrate the

world's five rhinoceros species, and to reflect

on the challenges facing them.

World Rhino Day was first established in

2010 in South Africa, this day has now

gained international recognition and it is

celebrated by a variety of organizations and

individuals from around the world.

World’s first camel hospital at Dubai set to

expand its facilities

World’s first camel hospital in Dubai is set to expand

its facilities by an additional 50 per cent in response

to the increase in demand for its services.

Historically, camels, known as the ‘Ship of

the Desert’ were a source of transport as well

as food and milk in the region.

The camel has continued to be an integral part

of the UAE’s society and culture to this day,

with select breeds used for camel racing, a

sport highly popular among Emiratis.

The camel hospital, built at an estimated cost

of 40 million Dirhams, opened its doors in

2017 to meet the demand in the UAE for an

advanced medical facility dedicated to

treating camels.

World Tourism Day: 27 September

The United Nations World Tourism Organization

announced 27th September as World Tourism Day in

1980 and has been celebrating the day since then.

The objective is to acquaint people with the

social, economic, cultural and political

importance of tourism and make them

responsible tourists in turn.

Each year sees a new theme and a new

country as a host.

This year for the first time India will be

hosting World Tourism Day which has the

theme ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for

all’.

Japan launches ‘World's Biggest Transport

SpaceShip’ for Space Station

Japan launched an unmanned spacecraft towards the

International Space Station after a fire early this

month delayed the mission.

The H-2B rocket lifted off at 1:05 am local

time (1605 GMT) with cargo vessel

Kounotori8.

The launch took place from the Japan

Aerospace Exploration Agency's

Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern

Japan.

Kounotori8, meaning "white stork" in

Japanese, intends to deliver about 5.3 tonnes

of supplies to astronauts at the ISS, including

fresh food and water as well as batteries and

devices needed for experiments.

Saudi Arabia announced new visa scheme for 49

countries across the globe as part of its efforts to

boost the Kingdom's tourism sector.

The Kingdom has also appealed to foreign

companies to invest in a sector it hopes will

contribute 10 percent of gross domestic

product by 2030.

The Kingdom's president of the Saudi

Commission for Tourism and National

Heritage, Ahmed Al Khateeb, has said that

abayas will not be mandatory for women

tourists, including public beaches.

Access to the Muslim holy cities of Makkah

and Medina is restricted.

Currently, only citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait,

Oman, and the UAE can travel freely to the

country.

September 28 is the International Day for Universal

Access to Information (IDUAI).

This year UNESCO is commemorating the

International Day for Universal Access to

Information with a series of ‘Open Talks’.

The day was inaugurated in November 2015

Bada Dashain, the biggest festival of Nepal has

The festival starts on the first day of

Navaratri.

Devotees performed Ghatsthapana and

sowed maize and barley seeds for

germination of the auspicious Jamara (barley

shoots) in various parts of the country.

The 15-day festival is celebrated in the month

of Ashwin.

During Dashain, people worship goddess

Durga for nine days.

Poshan Maah'

The entire month of September will be celebrated as

the Rashtriya Poshan Maah.

This year the theme is ‘Complementary

Feeding’.

POSHAN Abhiyaan is a multi- ministerial

convergence mission with the vision to

address malnutrition with a targeted approach

by 2022.

Under the Poshan Abhiyaan, the government

has set a target to reduce the stunting rate in

children from 35 per cent to 25 per cent.

The programme aims at achieving

improvement in the nutritional status of

children up to six years of age, adolescent

girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the

approval for the new Gorewada International Zoo to

be inaugurated in Nagpur district of Maharashtra.

According to a report by Economist Intelligence

Unit, Mumbai has been ranked as the 45th safest city

on the Safe Cities Index (SCI), while Delhi stood at

the 52nd position.

Cities in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region

made up six of the top-10 safest cities with

Tokyo taking the top spot.

Singapore and Osaka came second and third,

while Sydney and Melbourne also made it to

the top-10 cities list.

Google Doodle honours Amrita Pritam on 100th

birth anniversary

The 100th birth anniversary of Indian novelist,

essayist and poet Amrita Pritam was celebrated with

a Google Doodle.

Google has honoured the day with a doodle,

which is a reference to her autobiography

Kala Gulab, which revealed many details of

her personal life.

Amrita Pritam, considered the greatest 20th-

century Punjabi poet, has published 28 novels

including Pinjar, a tale set during the time of

partition, which was also adapted into a

movie.

She is the first woman recipient of the

prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956

and also won the Jnanpith Award and the

Padma Vibhushan.

India hits out at Pakistan on raising Kashmir

issue during South Asian Speakers’ summit

India hit out strongly at Pakistan when the latter tried

to raise the Kashmir issue during the fourth South

Asian Speakers’ summit which began in Maldives

capital Male.

The two-day meeting focuses on achieving

the Sustainable Development Goals.

India is being represented by Lok Sabha

speaker Om Birla and other senior officials.

The summit is due to end with the adoption

of the Malé Declaration with a summary of

conclusions and recommendations.

longest electrified rail tunnel to nation

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu dedicated the

country's longest electrified rail tunnel between

Cherlopalli and Rapuru in Andhra Pradesh and the

electrified railway line between Venkatachalam and

Obulavaripalli.

The length of the rail tunnel is 6.6 kilometre.

The tunnel, built at a cost of Rs 437 crore.

Besides inaugurating the re-modelled yard at

Guduru railway station, the Vice-President

also flagged-off a new intercity super fast

express train between Guduru and

Vijayawada.

Get ready to pay higher penalties for traffic

violations

The amended provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act,

which hike the penalty for traffic rules violation have

come into force.

As many as 63 clauses of the Act, which

correspond to an increase in the fine for

traffic rule violation came into force at

midnight on 1 September.

The fine for jumping red-light has been

revised from 1,000 rupees earlier to 5,000

rupees now.

Driving without wearing a seat belt, which

earlier invited a fine of 100 rupees will now

attract a fine of 1,000 rupees.

The fine for rash driving has also been

revised from 1,000 rupees to 5,000 rupees.

And if caught for drunken driving, one needs

to cough up a hefty fine of 10,000 rupees.

GST collection in August stands at Rs 98,202 cr

GST collection in the month of August stood at 98

thousand 202 crore rupees.

The Finance Ministry said the total number of

GSTR 3B Returns filed for the month of July

up to 31st of August is around 76 lakh.

The total revenue earned by the Central

Government and the State Governments after

regular settlement in the month of August

2019 is 40 thousand 898 crore rupees for

CGST and 40 thousand 862 crores for the

SGST.

The BJP-led Haryana Government has

announced a 4,750 crore rupees waiver on

interest and penalty on crop loans.

This will benefit around 10 lakh

farmers of the state.

The farmers whose bank accounts

were declared Non-Performing Assets

(NPAs) by these banks and were

unable to renew their loans will now be

able to do so.

The five per cent penalty imposed on

farmers who failed to repay loans

taken from PACS will now be

completely waived.

Bollywood has taken lead to promote India’s

plastic-free movement with Varun Dhawan's

upcoming movie "Coolie No. 1" becoming

the first Bollywood film to go plastic-free.

Deshmukh announced that the movie

is going plastic-free and urged her

peers to do the same.

This comes days after Prime Minister

Narendra Modi, in his Independence

A Memorandum of Agreement has been signed

between the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation

(ESIC) and State Bank of India.

In accordance with the agreement, the SBI

would provide e-payment services directly to

the bank accounts of all ESIC beneficiaries

and payees without any manual intervention

as an integrated and automated process.

The e-payment integration would affect

statutory benefit payments to ESIC

beneficiaries as well as other payees on a

real-time basis.

The new system will benefit all stakeholders

of ESIC.

Vaishno Devi Shrine tops the list of 'Swachh

Iconic Places'

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu and

Kashmir has been adjudged as the Best Swachh

Iconic place in the country in the 'Swachh Iconic

Places'.

The list was released by the Ministry of Jal

Shakti, Department of Drinking Water and

Sanitation.

The Shrine has been adjudged on the basis of

the overall improvement in sanitation.

The Shrine was in direct competition with

dozen other iconic places including

New Delhi slips 6 notches in world's most liveable

cities ranking

The national capital has dropped by six places to rank

118th on a list of the world's most liveable cities.

It is mainly due to an increase in cases of

petty crimes and poor air quality, according

to an annual survey by the Economist

Intelligence Unit.

Mumbai also fell two places since last year to

rank 119th on the list topped by Vienna

(Austria) for the second consecutive year.

India jumps to 34th rank on world travel and

tourism competitiveness index

According to a World Economic Forum (WEF)

report, India has jumped six places to claim 34th spot

on world Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index

2019.

In 2015, India had been ranked at 52nd and at

40th in 2017.

Spain tops the ranking index followed by

France and Germany.

According to the WEF report, over 1.5 crore

international tourists arrived in India while

the share of travel and tourism industry was

3.6 per cent and that of industry employment

was 5.1 per cent.

India announced a line of credit worth one Billion US

dollars for the development of the Far East region of

Russia.

Addressing the Plenary Session of 5th

Vladivostok, Prime Minister Narendra Modi

said this announcement will prove to be a

take-off point for India's 'Act Far East' policy.

India, South Korea sign two major agreements

India and South Korea have signed two major

agreements to further defence educational exchanges

and extend logistical support to each other’s Navies.

The agreements will help enhance defence

co-operation between the two countries.

The agreements were signed after the talks

between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and

his South Korean counterpart Jeong

WHO and South-East Asia Region plans to

banish measles, rubella by 2023

Member-countries of the World Health Organisation

(WHO) South-East Asia Region has resolved to

eliminate highly infectious childhood killer diseases

measles and rubella by 2023.

A resolution to eliminate the diseases was

adopted at the 72nd session of the WHO

Regional Committee for South-East Asia in

Delhi.

Measles elimination and rubella control have

been a regional flagship priority since 2014.

India continues to grapple with 39,299 cases,

ranking fourth among 194 countries in the

number of measles cases registered between

July 2018 and June 2019.

Edelweiss, SBI sign pact for co-origination of

loans to MSMEs

ECL Finance Limited, a subsidiary of Edelweiss

Financial Services Limited and State Bank of India

(SBI) have signed a co-origination agreement, which

aims to increase access to credit for micro, small and

medium enterprises.

It plans to provide business loans, machinery

loans and SME asset-backed loans ranging

from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 50 lakh at a blended rate

of interest.

This is the third co-origination agreement for

Edelweiss, after Bank of Baroda and Central

Bank of India.

Chandrayaan-2: 95% of mission objectives

accomplished, says ISRO

ISRO says despite the loss of communication with

Vikram Lander, 90 to 95 per cent of the mission

objectives have been accomplished.

The Orbiter has already been placed in the

orbit around the moon.

The Orbiter camera is the highest resolution

camera in any lunar mission so far and shall

provide high-resolution images which will be

immensely useful to the global scientific

community.

The statement said Vikram Lander followed

the planned descent trajectory from its orbit

of 35 Km to just below 2 km above the

Article 371, which provides special provisions for

National Animal Disease Control Programme

Guided Missile (MPATGM) in the ranges of

Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh.

The missile was launched from a man-

portable Tripod launcher and the target was

mimicking a functional tank.

The missile hit the target in top attack mode

and destroyed it with precision. All the

mission objectives were met.

This is the third series of successful testing of

MPATGM.

The missile is incorporated with state-of-the-

art Infrared Imaging Seeker along with

advanced avionics.

India's 2nd Scorpene-class submarine to be

commissioned on September 28

India's second Scorpene-class attack submarine INS

Khanderi will be commissioned into the Navy by

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Mumbai on

September 28.

The conventional diesel-electric submarine

The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to turn

days and can go on supporting it till the

animal’s lifetime.

While a lifetime adoption costs Rs 3 lakh,

those willing to adopt a bovine for a year will

have to pay Rs 21,000.

Those adopting for a month will have to pay

Rs 2,100 and those willing to adopt for 15

days will have to pay Rs 1,100.

India hosts the first conference on military

India is hosting the first conference on military

medicine for member nations of the Shanghai Co-

operation Organisation in New Delhi.

The two-day conference is being held with an

aim to share best practices in the field of

military medicine.

Indo-Thailand Joint Military Exercise Maitree –

2019

Joint Military Exercise MAITREE-2019 between

India and Thailand will be conducted at Foreign

Training Node, Umroi (Meghalaya) from 16-29 Sep

2019.

Indian and Royal Thailand Army (RTA)

comprising 50 soldiers each will participate

in the exercise with an aim to share

experience gained during various counter-

terrorism operations in their respective

countries.

Exercise MAITREE is an annual training

event which is being conducted alternatively

in Thailand and India since 2006.

The joint military exercise will enhance the

level of defence co-operation between Indian

Army (IA) and Royal Thailand Army (RTA)

which in turn will further foster defence

cooperation and bilateral relations between

the two nations.

would be provided under the 'Mukhyamantri

VyapariKshatipurti Beema Yojana'.

Traders registered under the Haryana Goods

and Service Tax (HGST) Act, 2017 would be

covered under these schemes.

He said the premium of Rs 38 crore for both

the insurance schemes would be paid by the

state government.

India has joined the Global Antimicrobial Resistance

(AMR) Research and Development (R&D) hub as a

new member.

This would expand the global partnership

working to address challenges and improve

coordination and collaboration in global

AMR research.

AMR is the ability of a microbe to resist the

effects of medication that once could

successfully treat the microbe.

Global AMR research and development hub

was launched in May 2018 on the margins of

the 71st session of the World Health

Assembly, following a call from G20 leaders

in 2017.

NCST recommends ‘tribal area’ status for

Ladakh under Sixth Schedule

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes

(NCST) wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah and

Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda, recommending

that Ladakh be declared a tribal area under the Sixth

Schedule of the Constitution.

The Sixth Schedule provides for the

administration of tribal areas after setting up

the autonomous district and regional

councils.

The Home Ministry is the central authority

for declaring an area as a “tribal area”.

The Scheduled Tribes that inhabit the region

include Balti, Beda, Boto, Brokpa/Drokpa,

Changpa, Garra, Mon and Purigpa.

DRDO hands over second 'Netra' early warning

system to IAF

The Defence Research Development Organization

(DRDO) handed over the second airborne warning

plane, Netra, to the Indian Air Force.

The Netra, an Airborne Early Warning and

Control (AEWC) aircraft, had played a stellar

role during the Balakot airstrikes that had

14th Conference of Parties to UNCCD adopts

The 14th Conference of Parties (COP-14) to the

United Nations Convention to Combat

Desertification (UNCCD) came to a close with the

adoption of the Delhi Declaration.

During the extensive deliberations that lasted

for 12 days, COP-14 witnessed widespread

participation from over 9,000 participants

from across the globe at Greater Noida.

In Delhi Declaration, the parties expressed

support for new initiatives aiming to improve

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has

joined hands with Defence Research and

development of human-centric systems for the

The technological capabilities existing in

DRDO laboratories for defence applications

will be customised to meet the requirements

of the human space mission of ISRO.

ISRO aims to demonstrate human spaceflight

capability before the 75th anniversary of

Kerala govt inks MoU with the Maldives on

Kerala inked a memorandum of understanding

(MoU) with the Maldives to strengthen cancer care

in the island nation.

Maldives has also sought RCC's support to

create a cancer registry in that country.

The MOU was signed between Maldivian

Air-to-Air Missile Astra successfully flight tested

from Su-30 MKI

India's indigenously designed air-to-air missile Astra

was successfully test-fired from the Bay of Bengal

off the coast of Odisha.

The beyond-visual-range missile was

launched from Sukhoi-30 MKI as a part of

user trials.

Various radars, electro-optical tracking

system and sensors tracked the missile and

confirmed its engagement with the target.

The Government issued an ordinance to ban e-

cigarettes making the production, import, export,

transport, sell or advertisements of such "alternative"

smoking devices a cognizable offence attracting jail

term and fine.

First-time violators will face a jail term of up

to one year and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

For subsequent offences, a jail term of up to

three years or a fine of Rs 5 lakh, or both

according to the ordinance.

The storage of e-cigarettes shall now be

punishable with imprisonment of up to six

months or a fine of up to Rs 50,000 or both.

International Ramayana Festival concludes in

Delhi

The 5th edition of the International Ramayana

Festival concluded in the national capital Delhi with

performances from Bangladesh and Fiji.

The three-day-long festival, which

commenced on September 17 was held at

Kamani Auditorium.

In the event, around nine countries including

Bangladesh and Fiji participated and

rendered their versions of Ramayan.

On September 17, Thailand, Indonesia and

Sri Lanka participated in the event while on

September 18, Cambodia, Mauritius and

Trinidad and Tobago showcased their version

The Telangana government has decided to declare

2020 as Artificial Intelligence year by organising

The state government has signed up with

Skill India, IBM join hands for nationwide Train-

the-Trainer programme in AI

The Directorate General of Training (DGT), under

the skill development and entrepreneurship ministry,

has signed an agreement with IT major IBM to carry

out a nationwide Train-the-Trainer programme in

basic artificial intelligence.

As part of the programme, ITI trainers will be

trained on basic artificial intelligence (AI)

skills towards using technology in their day-

to-day training activities.

IBM aims at training 10,000 faculty members

from ITIs across the country and the

programme will be executed over a period of

one year with 14 trainers across 7 locations

with over 200 workshops.

Udhagamandalam-Ooty- in Tamilnadu will be

hosting the second flower festival of the year during

the North-East Monsoon in October and November.

Preparatory works for the elaborate

exhibition of colourful and fragrant flowers

have started in the famous Botanical Gardens

in Udhagamandalam.

More than eighty-five exotic varieties,

The PMMVY is a direct benefit transfer

scheme under which cash benefits are

provided to pregnant women in their bank

account directly to meet enhanced nutritional

The scheme, under which the beneficiaries

receive a cash benefit of five thousand rupees

in three instalments, was launched on 1st of

January in 2017.

The eligible beneficiaries also receive cash

incentive under Janani Suraksha Yojana.

Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana

on 21st October

Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana will

be held on October 21 and the counting of votes will

take place on October 24.

Maharashtra has 288 seats and Haryana has

90 seats.

The five-year term of the legislative

assemblies of Haryana will expire on 2nd

November. The term of Maharashtra

assembly will be over on 9th November.

The Election Commission has also

announced by-polls to 64 assembly seats

According to an official statement, the

campaign envisages that citizens should

NTPC to build 5GW solar park in Gujarat

NTPC Ltd. plans to set up a 5-gigawatt solar park in

Gujarat, which would be the biggest in the country.

A site has been identified for the project,

which is expected to cost as much as ₹25,000

crores ($3.5 billion) and begin operations by

2024.

The company may also invite bids from

developers to set up projects in the park.

The plan is part of the NTPC’s aim to build

32 gigawatts of renewable capacity by 2032

and reduce the share of fossil fuels in its

energy mix to 70 per cent from about 96 per

cent now.

CBDT sets up National e-Assessment Centre for

up a National e-Assessment Centre (NeAC) for

personal contact between officials and taxpayers.

The initiative is a part of government efforts

to reduce human discretion in assessments

and scrutiny, which in turn will eliminate

possibilities of corruption, by leveraging new

technologies like artificial intelligence,

machine learning, video conferencing,

telecommunication application software and

mobile applications.

The CBDT has appointed Krishna Mohan

Prasad, a 1984 batch Indian Revenue Service

(IRS) officer, as the first Principal Chief

Commissioner of Income Tax (PrCCIT) of

NeAC.

Ladakhi Shondol dance makes it to Guinness

book of records

Shondol dance, which is known as the royal dance of

Ladakh, has created history by entering into the

Guinness Book of World Records as the largest

Ladakhi dance.

Shondol is a famous dance, which artistes

used to perform for the king of Ladakh.

As many as 408 women attired in traditional

dresses and beautiful headgears performed

the dance.

It was held on the concluding day of the

Population Register (NPR).

Shah even put forth an idea to have a

multipurpose ID card for every citizen which

Ayushman Bharat scheme completes one year of

its launch

Ayushman Bharat - the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya

Yojana has completed one year of its launch on 23

September.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that

Ayushman Bharat is more than just a health

care scheme as it is a beacon of hope to more

than 50 crores of India's most vulnerable

people.

The main aim of the scheme is to provide

universal health care to the poor, needy and

vulnerable sections of the country.

The scheme, which is the world's largest

health care programme, provides a health

cover of five lakh rupees annually to

vulnerable families and aims at benefiting

more than ten crore poor families all over the

In the last one year, more than 46 lakh

beneficiaries have availed cashless treatment

Over 11 lakh golden cards have been

generated within the first 90 days of the

launch of the scheme with 60% of families

having at least one golden card which is

highest in the country.

The CEO informed that claims amounting to

around 14 crore rupees have been settled till

date and state is registering phenomenal

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the

Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS Varaha at a special

function held at Chennai Port.

The ship is the fourth in the series of seven

offshore patrol vessels of the Coast Guard.

It will be based at New Mangalore in

Karnataka under the Western Command.

The 98-metre offshore patrol vessel ICGS

Varaha has been designed and constructed

indigenously.

It is capable of carrying a twin-engine

helicopter and four high-speed boats for swift

boarding, search and rescue, law enforcement

and maritime patrolling operations.

Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2019 between

IATA launches gender diversity campaign for

balanced workforce

The International Air Transport Association (IATA)

has launched the 25by2025 Campaign - an airline

industry initiative to advance gender diversity in the

airline industry by 2025.

It is a voluntary commitment by participating

the number of women in senior positions by

either 25 per cent against currently reported

metrics or to a minimum representation of 25

LIC owned IDBI Bank has launched a home and auto

The lender is offering home loan for up to Rs

75 lakh with a tenor of up to 35 years.

The interest rate on home loan will be from

8.30 per cent per annum onwards.

The bank's customers will have the twin

Tech giant Google has signed a statement of intent

with the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) for

rolling out 'Build for Digital India' programme.

The programme will offer a platform for

United Bank of India and Oriental Bank of

Commerce will be merged with Punjab

National Bank, making the proposed entity

the second largest public sector bank (PSB).

Syndicate Bank will be merged with Canara

Bank, while Allahabad Bank will be

amalgamated with Indian Bank.

Similarly, Andhra Bank and Corporation

Bank will be consolidated with Union Bank

of India.

The Finance Minister said, after the merger

of banks, the country will now have 12 public

sector banks instead of 27.

Growth of eight core sectors slows to 2.1% in July

Growth of eight core industries dropped to 2.1 per

cent in July mainly due to a contraction in coal, crude

oil, natural gas and refinery products.

The eight-core sector industries, coal, crude

oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser,

steel, cement and electricity, had expanded

by 7.3 per cent in July last year.

The output of coal, crude oil, natural gas and

refinery products recorded negative growth

in July.

During April-July, the eight sectors grew by

3 per cent compared to 5.9 per cent in the

same period the previous year.

Cabinet approves recapitalisation of IDBI

The Central government approved Rs 9,300 crore

capital infusion into IDBI Bank to increase the

lender's capital base.

The Union Cabinet cleared the

recapitalisation plan with a one-time infusion

of funds by both the government and the LIC.

LIC, which has a controlling stake in IDBI,

will infuse Rs 4,743 crore.

The government will provide Rs 4,557 crore

as a one-time re-capitalisation.

RBI makes repo-linked interest rates mandatory

The Reserve Bank of India has made it mandatory for

banks to link all of their new loan products, be it

personal, housing or auto to an external benchmark

like the policy repo rate.

RBI issued a circular saying that banks will

have to link their products to an external

benchmark with effect from 1st October

2019.

The circular informs that banks can also

choose any benchmark market interest rate

published by Financial Benchmarks India

Private Limited - FBIL or the government’s

3-month and 6-month Treasury bill yields

published by FBIL as their preferred external

benchmark.

Central Government to invest Rs 25,000 crore in

5 years to revamp fishery infrastructure

With the objective of achieving the real goals of the

ambitious Blue Revolution project, the Union

Government has lined up Rs 25,000 crore

investments in different sectors of fisheries in the

next three to five years.

As inland fisheries contribute only 50 per

from three million tonnes in the next three to

four years.

The announcement was made at ‘Aqua

Aquaria India 2019’ at Hyderabad.

Sitharaman led panel weighs ordinance to ban e-

cigarette sales

A panel of ministers led by finance minister Nirmala

Sitharaman will study a health ministry proposal to

ban the sale of electronic cigarettes through an

ordinance.

The panel includes ministers from commerce,

health, agriculture, chemicals and

petrochemicals, and food processing

departments.

In August 2018, the health ministry issued an

advisory restricting advertisement of

electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS),

popularly called e-cigarettes.

According to government data, more than

460 e-cigarette brands are available in India,

with various configurations of nicotine

delivery and in over 7,700 flavours.

UPI transactions top 900 million in August

Transactions made through Unified Payments

Interface (UPI) for the first time have crossed the 900

million mark in August.

It has crossed the mark due to an increase in

merchant adoption of the payment channel

and improved smartphone penetration in

certain states.

Newly released data from National Payments

Corporation of India (NPCI) show that in

August, a total of 918 million transactions

worth Rs 1.54 lakh crore were processed on

the interoperable digital payments channel.

ONGC to invest over Rs 13,000 crore in Assam to

drill over 220 wells

State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation

(ONGC) will invest over Rs 13,000 crore in Assam

over the next five years.

The oil and gas company has signed a

memorandum of understanding (MoU) with

the Assam government for boosting its

exploration and production activities in the

state.

The company will make the investment for

drilling more than 220 oil and gas wells

across the state.

IDBI Bank is planning to launch a co-branded credit

card, which will be marketed to customers, agents,

The co-branded credit card will be launched

subsidiary, LIC Credit Cards Services (LIC

CSL)

Currently, IDBI Bank offers five credit card

variants.

LIC CSL, which has a tie-up with Axis Bank

and Corporation Bank for issuance of credit

cards under co-branded/white label

agreements.

World Bank to provide Rs 3,000 crore aid for food

parks

Union Minister of State for Food Processing

Industries Rameswar Teli has said that the World

Bank will provide three thousand crore rupees

assistance to finance, mini and mega food parks

across the country.

He was addressing the 15th Indo-US

Economic Summit organized by the Indo-

American Chamber of Commerce-North

India Council (IACC-NIC) in New Delhi.

The government is trying its best to double

the income of farmers and is laying lot of

focus on mega and mini food parks.

GST Network decides to make Aadhaar

authentication mandatory for new dealers from

January 2020

The GST Network has decided to make Aadhaar

authentication or physical verification mandatory for

new dealers from January 2020 to check

malpractices in GST.

This was announced by Deputy Chief

Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi, who

heads the Group of Ministers of GST

Network.

Aadhaar authentication was earlier optional.

Corporate tax rates slashed to 22% for domestic

companies

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs

Nirmala Sitaraman announced that corporate tax

rates have been slashed to 22% for domestic

companies and 15% for new domestic manufacturing

companies.

This relief in tax has been done through an

ordinance to make certain amendments in the

Income-tax Act 1961 and the Finance (No. 2)

Act 2019.

The effective rate for domestic companies

shall be 25.17 per cent inclusive surcharge

and cess and for new companies (i.e

companies incorporated on or after 1st

October 2019 with a condition to commence

production on or before 31st March 2023) is

17.01 % inclusive of surcharge and cess.

The Minister also said that the Government

has also decided to expand the scope of

Corporate Social Responsibility two per cent

spending.

Government notifies 8.65% interest rate for

EPFO members

Government has approved 8.65 per cent interest rate

on deposits in Employees Provident Fund for 2018-

19.

Ministry of Labour and Employment has

notified 8.65 per cent rate of interest on EPF

deposits for its over six crore subscribers.

The EPFO has been settling EPF withdrawal

claims at 8.55 per cent interest rate, approved

for 2017-18.

Now, the EPFO will settle accounts on the

higher rate of 8.65 per cent for 2018-19.

RBI puts Mumbai-based PMC Bank under

directions

The Reserve Bank of India has placed the Punjab and

Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank Limited,

Mumbai under Directions.

According to the Directions, depositors will

be allowed to withdraw a sum not exceeding

1,000 rupees of the total balance in every

savings bank account or current account or

any other deposit account, subject to the

conditions stipulated in the RBI Directions.

The Directions shall remain in force for a

period of six months from the close of

business of the bank.

The Bank has however clarified that the issue

of the directions by the central bank should

not be construed as a cancellation of a

banking licence by the Reserve Bank.

ADB sharply cuts India's GDP growth forecast to

6.5% for FY20

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on sharply cut

India's growth forecast to 6.5 per cent for the current

fiscal, weighed down by the GDP growth rate

dipping to a six-year low in the first quarter.

In its supplement to the ADO in July, the

Manila-headquartered multi-lateral funding

agency cut the country's GDP growth

estimate to 7 per cent for 2019-20 on the back

of fiscal shortfall concerns.

and other financial institutions, the stress in

the rural economy, and a weakening external

Nine districts were also awarded for better

sex ratio at birth.

During the event, 10 districts were also

Bachao Beti padhao campaign.

India has made a remarkable jump in the

national sex ratio of 13 points from 918 to

931 in the last 5 years.

The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign was

launched in 2015 and is, now, being

An innovative project for constructing a floating

Education Project in South Kanarchor of

Bangladesh.

The project involved the construction of a

school in an area which is underwater during

the monsoon months.

The doodle depicts a graph along with seven

ice-capped mountains which symbolise all

Sardar Patel National Unity Award for

promoting national integration, unity

The Sardar Patel National Unity Award, a new

honour on the pattern of Padma awards for

promoting national unity, will be bestowed on

individuals or institutions for notable contributions

towards the cause of the country's unity and integrity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had

announced the institution of the award.

According to a notification issued by the

Home Ministry, the decoration will recognise

inspiring contributions to promote national

unity and integrity and to reinforce the value

of a strong and united India.

Any person without distinction of race,

occupation, position or sex is eligible for the

award and it may be given posthumously in

very rare and only in highly deserving cases.

The award will be in the shape of a lotus leaf,

six centimetres in length, six and two

centimetres at its greatest breadth and four

millimetres in thickness.

Awards

Kerala Tourism has won three prestigious Pacific

Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold awards.

These awards include one for an ethnic food

restaurant run by women at Kumarakom

under its Responsible Tourism Mission.

launched by his government.

Mr Modi dedicated the award to those

Indians who transformed the Swachh Bharat

campaign into a ‘people's movement’ and

accorded topmost priority to cleanliness in

their day-to-day lives.

The campaign has not only improved the

lives of crores of Indians, but it has also

played a significant role in achieving the

goals set by the UN.

The cleanliness campaign was launched by

the Modi government during its first term on

Payal Jangid became the First Indian to Win

Changemaker Award

17-year-old Payal Jangid from Rajasthan became the

first Indian to receive the Changemaker Award by

the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Payal, who is from Hinsla village, about 100

kms from Jaipur, has been conferred with the

award for her continuous dedication towards

the abolition of child marriage in her village,

which is a child-friendly village (Bal Mitra

Gram), as well as in neighbouring villages.

According to Payal, her activism and fight to

abolish child marriage began at the age of 11,

when she had to relent against being married

Digital services and consulting major Infosys has

won the United Nations Global Climate Action

It became the only Indian corporate to earn

In Cycling, India's Ronaldo Laitonjam won his fourth

gold medal on the concluding day of Track Asia Cup

India emerged overall champions as its

Overall, India topped the medals tally, with

10 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze as the

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) Mission

Olympic Cell has included 10 boxers in the Target

Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for the 2020

Tokyo Olympics.

The boxers include M.C. Mary Kom

(women’s 51 kg), Amit Panghal (men’s 52

kg), Sonia Chahal (women’s 57 kg), Neeraj

(women’s 57 kg), Nikhat Zareen (women’s

51 kg), Kavinder Singh Bisht (men’s 57 kg),

Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 69 kg), Vikas

Krishan (men’s 75 kg), Shiva Thapa (men’s

63 kg) and Manish Kaushik (men’s 63 kg).

India has so far won two Olympic medals in

boxing i.e. Vijender Singh won the bronze in

the 2008 Beijing Games while Mary Kom

won the bronze in the 2012 London Games.

Apart from the boxers, the committee has

also included 22-year-old women’s 10m air

podium.

This, however, was not an Olympic category

and thus the bronze did not help Aware

PT Usha honoured with IAAF Veteran Pin

The world athletics governing body, the International

Association of Athletic Federations, IAAF, honoured

the Indian track and field legend PT Usha with a

Veteran Pin in recognition of her contribution to the

growth of the sport.

IAAF chief Sebastian Coe presented her the

Veteran Pin during the 52nd IAAF Congress

at Doha.

Usha was one of three persons from Asia to

receive the honour.

Often called the "queen of track and field",

Usha is one of the greatest sprinters to have

come out of India.

At the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games, she
