This is what the Lord asks of you
“Act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God” Micah 6:8
Dear Parents and Caregivers Progress on Technology Plan: We have recently activated the Ultra Fast Broadband connection to the College. This will mean faster internet speed for staff and students via the fibre optic connection. This is the first step in up-grading the network at the College to assist in improving teaching and learning. The next step is to complete a thorough audit of the network infrastructure through the School Network Upgrade Project (SNUP). This is another Ministry of Education initiative which aims to have all schools across New Zealand with modern up-to-date IT capability to improve teaching and learning. The SNUP initiative will identify cabling and wireless improvements which need to be carried out and the cost will be covered by the Ministry of Education and the Catholic Diocese of Auckland. The Board of Trustees has already budgeted for the additional cost for up-grading some parts of the hardware. The Senior Leadership Team has been working on the best way to introduce the use of mobile devices by students to assist their learning at the College. You may be familiar with the term Bring Your Own Device – BYOD. We are aware that this practice is common in many schools. To improve teaching and learning, we are currently investigating the most effective way of helping students and teachers make the most of this technology. We have been deliberately thorough in our research on this topic to ensure that no student will be disadvantaged if he does not have access to such devices at home. Equally we need to be assured that the use of these devices will enhance teaching and learning in a meaningful way. I will keep you informed of our progress with this issue. Hui A successful Hui was held on Tuesday 13 August, helping us to take the next step towards making Te Reo Maori available to students. Thank you to all who attended and to Mr Worth for organising the evening. Term Break Tutoring Programme: At the end of the term many NCEA teachers are offering opportunities for students to attend extra classes to help prepare for NCEA internal and external standards. This is a great opportunity for students to catch-up or better understand work which has already been covered in class. I thank my staff for their continued commitment to student achievement through this use of out of class time to help students. You may not be aware that some teachers offer this assistance at lunchtime and after school during term time. I would encourage you to discuss this with your son – in case he is missing out on opportunities to help improve his achievement.
God bless you and your families.

Conrad Maile played in the Auckland Rugby League U15 against Mangere East on 18 August. They came away winning 36 - 20. His behaviour, actions and demeanour on and off the field were of an extremely high standard, representing his family, Pt Chevalier Club and his school. The Pt Chevalier Club has not won a championship title for many years.
CONGRATULATIONS
IS THIS YOUR CREED?
A Creed To Live By Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you. Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as they would your life, for without them, life is meaningless.
Don't let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live ALL the days of your life.
Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying. Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us each together.
Don't be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find time. The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose
love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going.
Don't forget, a person's greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated. Don't be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.
Don't use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured each step of the way. Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery and Today is a gift: that's why we call it The Present
Blessings for today

On Tuesday, 6 August, we went out on a trip to see natural and cultural resources, learn about them, and look at the Ports of Auckland and how it is the biggest in New Zealand which is currently getting bigger, and what things come in and out of these ports. Here is my experience:
On the ferry ride, we saw and learned a lot of things about the resources, ports, the giant ships (which we looked at in amazement), the cranes, the workers and the gigantic cargos. One of my favourite times was on the ferry ride when the boat started shaking hard. We saw the gigantic cargos and ships and my most favourite part was when we went under the harbour bridge and looked at the structure, the bungee platform and the improvements of the bridge. We also saw the numerous amount of sail boats docked near the viaduct which was amazing.
So overall, the trip was awesome as we had awesome weather, saw exquisite views, spent time with friends out of school which is always fun and we learned a lot of things on the 1 hour tour.
We would like to thank the teachers and caregivers that were on the trip because without them we wouldn’t have had this amazing time.

LIBRARY NEWS
Next week, 26-30 August, we will be celebrating Book Week at Liston. This is an opportunity to return all overdue library books and get out a new book.
There will be 2 competitions running for the duration of Book Week. The first competition ‘Guess which book each teacher is reading’ where you match a book title against each teacher’s name. This could be a book about the subject they teach, or a play on the teacher’s name or a physical attribute that teacher has.
The second competition is ‘Book spine poetry’ where you select and horizontally stack a minimum of 6 books, so that the book titles create a poem.
There will be a prize for each competition winner, juniors Years 7-9 and seniors Years 10-13.
Liston College celebrated the many languages spoken around the world. Students enjoyed wearing language badges, watching a movie, taking part in a form class quiz competition, making 1000 paper cranes and a shared lunch featuring cuisine from many places around the world. This was a highlight.
We had dishes of 30 different cultures - what a feast! Thank you to all the parents/caregivers who cooked the dishes for this event!
K. Takeda (T.I.C. Japanese)
INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE WEEK JAPANESE VISITORS
In week 2 and 3 of this term, Liston College hosted our sister school Seisoku Gakuen High School, from Tokyo. The group consisted of Mr Saito, the Teacher in Charge of International Relations, and seven students. It was an opportunity for Liston College to return the hospitality extended to us when Ms Takeda and a group of our students visited Japan in 2012.
Over their two week visit, our guests had the opportunity to experience Liston College classes, were involved in an English Language support programme and visited a number of attractions around Auckland. Each student was hosted by a Liston College family and was assigned a buddy while at school.
Such programmes are an excellent opportunity for our students to understand and learn of other cultures and languages. Our visitors were actively involved in our Japanese classes, assisting in making the language and traditions real and made many friends during their stay at Liston College. We look forward to their visit again in 2015.
