FROM THE COMMITTEE: Unless they have specifically requested otherwise, group coordinators contact details have been omitted on the newsletter page of the website, as this is a public document. However, they can be found in the “members only” section of the website, which needs a password, already provided to members. - Nigel Tiverton u3a is pleased to welcome seven new members: Elizabeth Ricks David Body Margaret and Colin Haxton Melody Hannon Roger Elliott Jan Proud . August Meeting This was our second meeting at the Tiverton Hotel since lockdown restrictions were eased and, as in the previous month, we held this in a hybridised style (ie. face-to-face and on Zoom).

Since many of our members are wary of public meetings, we continued to limit the number of attendees with socially distanced seating but still managed to get about 30 people in the room with plenty of space to spare. All in all, and thanks to several more Zoom participants, we had a slightly larger attendance than in July.

Unfortunately, and despite everything we had learnt from our previous meeting, there were still a few minor technical hitches but hopefully nothing that detracted too much from a very successful event. Consequently, we’ll continue with this hybridised format at our next meeting on 23rd September.

Our speaker for the August meeting was Mike Warren with a talk on The Prospects for UK Agriculture. Mike’s talk began with a review of trends over the last ten years and the current situation in terms of profitability and self-sufficiency. One of his many interesting observations was to do with the UK’s self-sufficiency in agricultural produce. Unsurprisingly, the UK imports most of its tropical fruit and many of its vegetables but is well served in other areas. One slightly unusual aspect was the traded production of lamb. Whilst we produce 100% of what we need, a large proportion is exported to the EU and the shortfall is made up by imports from New Zealand!

Mike also pointed out that we have an ageing farming population whose income is derived from a significant amount of EU subsidy. Since EU subsidies will be phased out in the next few years, it is to be hoped that new “green” schemes proposed by the UK Government will help to fill the gap. Clearly, there are many challenges ahead including the shortage of immigrant labour and the likelihood of controversial

trade deals with other countries such as the US. It seems inevitable that some consolidation of smaller farming interests must take place if we are to remain competitive.

This was an extremely interesting and thought-provoking talk which was much appreciated by our audience.

Thank you, Mike for an excellent presentation – Tony

News from Tiverton Museum I wanted to let you know about the next talk coming up in our 2021 series of virtual talks, and was wondering if you’d be happy to circulate the information amongst your members for us?

Our Museum Favourites, The Best of the Museum’s Collections is taking place on Wednesday 29th September 6-7pm.

Museum Director, Pippa Griffith, shares our favourite objects and photographs from the collection. The talk will feature items you would find on display in the museum, like the Bolham bowl, plus hidden gems from the stores, including an engineer’s notebook for the Exe Valley railway line. Join us to hear stories behind these, and some of our quirkier items.

All talks via Zoom in 2021, £5 per zoom link, £4 for Museum Members. A recording of the talk can be sent if you are unable to attend at the stated time.

Book now via our website: https://www.tivertonmuseum.org.uk/event/our-museum-favourites

Look out for More Museum Favourites on Wednesday 20th October.

Thank you for your help in spreading the word.

Best wishes,

THIS MONTH’S HUMOUR

ABBA stars release the set-list for their comeback concert, including “The Zimmer Takes It All”; “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Nan Before 6pm)”; and “Does Your Mother Know What I Came Upstairs For?” When my friend Mary went to the local recycling centre, she called out to one of the workers: 'Where's glass go?' He called back: 'Scotland'. Ten soldiers on a rifle range are ordered to fire in sequence, one to ten. Everything is fine until soldier ten fires out of turn before soldier nine. Afterwards the sergeant major yells to the offender: 'You know what you just did - it was bang out of order.'

GROUP REPORTS:

The bridge group has started to meet again after a very long gap due to the various COVID restrictions. Apart from getting together to play bridge it’s been a joy meeting up with old friends again. We meet in each other’s houses on a mutually agreed day for a relaxing game of bridge. New members are always welcome so do

get in touch if you think you would like to give it a try so that I can put you in touch with other members of the group. - Wendy

Creative Writing group continues to function well on-line, and there is some hesitancy about actual meetings, so this will be kept under review. Having missed the deadline for last month’s newsletter (sorry) I can confirm that for August we shared our ideas on “Things I like to See” and

“animals”. As ever, the responses gave wide in interpretation with a selection of both poetry and prose. For September, the topics were “The House Next Door” which elicited whimsical poetry and a mysterious neighbour who turned out to be a murderer! (Fiction, fortunately, but Agatha Christie would have enjoyed it!). The alternative was “An unusual Hobby” and this brought forth items about chess and poetry writing and from another member, a lifetime’s love of painting in spite of the toddler years, and being confined predominantly to poster paint daubs by enthusiastic youngsters! As we move into autumn, we will be writing about “The Eccentric” or “A day to Remember” in October. We always have wide-ranging and sometimes surprising topics, which keeps us on our (literary) toes and this month, a separate challenge has been set: to write a short piece of Purple Prose. Never a Dull Moment with the Creative set! - Nickie And a bit of creative writing from Gordon Ball….. I’ve been ‘musing’ on the days of the week, and ended up with some quirky lines, and since the family enjoyed them, I shared them with the Coordinator of our Writing Group, and she has suggested that I should send them to the newsletter, as follows, Daze of the Weak The first day is Moanday, here we go again. The next day is Chewsday, what shall we choose to eat? The third day Is Whensday, but I need time to think. Before we come to Thirst day, when we can have a drink.

Page 8: Tiverton u3a learn, laugh, live Newsletter

October 2021 8

And then we come to Fry day, but who wants chips and fish? Hooray at last for Scatter day, to roam wherever we wish. And then at last it’s Sun day, if clouds and rain permit A time to talk and walk, but I would rather sit. - Gordon

We are maintaining a healthy weekly attendance of around 20 members and have a steady trickle of new members. However, having the use of three lawns and the pavilion for the tea break and toilets, there is room for any others who wish to join us. We had to miss one week due to Cricket fixtures and moved our next session from the Tuesday to

the Wednesday, but still had an attendance of 21 members. Owing to the short season we hope to extend play by two weeks into October. We play on the outfield of Heathcoat Cricket Club on the Knightshayes Estate on Tuesdays from 2.00pm until 4.30pm. If you would like to join us, whether or not you have played before, (we have a pool of equipment you can use) please contact Eric or Sandra by email or Tel. 01884-253402. - Eric

The latest cryptic crossword created by our group is shown in the later pages of this newsletter together with the solution to last month’s crossword. All the clues have been created by group members and we encourage you to solve it if you can!

Also, we could do with some new members to strengthen the group. If you fancy joining us, please get in touch - Tony

Unfortunately, I had to postpone our September meeting and we will now discuss "The Economics of an Ageing Population" on Wed 13th October at 10.30 in the Halberton Village Hall. This might turn out rather well since the Government has in the meantime announced some policy changes which will have a significant effect on the older

generations. These will affect the government's finances as well as our own. If you'd like to attend and are not already on the list, please let me know. ~ Mike

Having all enjoyed our vacation in August, we were back to our studies earlier this month. This was the first time that we had met together in person since March last year. That is some 18 months of meeting on Zoom. We talked about everything we had done during August. Many of our activities involved grandchildren. It was, of course, a School holiday with children looking to

their parents (us) for support with childcare for the grandchildren. One of our members was able to report the birth of a great-grandchild! This gave us an opportunity to practise vocabulary (eg der Enkel and die Enkelin - grandson and granddaughter). We hope next time to be able to discuss our own holidays which we can now take as the children have returned to School. – John

We’re BACK!!!! The History group will be meeting again on Wednesday 13 October at the Cherith Fellowship, Blundells Road at 2.30pm. We will be having a talk by Brian Fernley from the Southwest Airfields Heritage trust, who work to preserve our aviation history. They have four talks

they give to various groups. The one Brian as suggested is ‘Jumping Joe Byerle’ (The only US Serviceman to fight with both the American and Soviet Armies). So why not come along on 13th October and hear more about this fellow? Cost is still only £2 on the door and includes tea and biscuits. - David

We have a new date for beginning again after a false start for September.

We will now restart on October 13th, second and fourth Wednesdays at Halberton Village Hall as

usual, but at the slightly earlier time of 2pm. - Pat

I am delighted to announce we are recommencing this friendly group. The first meeting will be on Thursday 7th October at 10.00am and then 21st October. We meet at Pat Regardsoe's in Cullompton and anyone who would like to join us and give Handbells a try will be very

welcome. Janet01823 669191

Live jazz has finally restarted and we've now enjoyed three sessions in a short space of time. A few of us enjoyed a great evening at the Jazz Club in Uffculme. Mike Denham was the pianist, Steve Graham played the trumpet and Hamish Maxwell was the

singer. Hamish, who was singing in the 50s London jazz scene and has been singing ever since has the strong and clear voice of a young man despite being a nonagenarian! (a lesson to all of us to keep active and engaged!) ~ Helen Eleven of us enjoyed an excellent evening with the Richard Leach Street Band playing in the Jubilee Hall in Langford Budville. Their line up is shown in the photo and included a beautiful white sousaphone. The latest session was also in Langford Budville and featured the John Shillitto & the Riviera Ramblers who provided a very varied and entertaining evening featuring amongst other things the forgotten art of washboard playing. The next sessions are: Fri 15th Oct in the Jubilee Hall, Langford Budville with the Black Cat Band. The contact is Dudley Edgar at [email protected]. Wed 20th Oct in the Magelake Hall - band not yet confirmed. The contact is Jane Mulholland at [email protected]. In both cases the organisers would appreciate if you confirm if you intention to go so they can plan seating etc. ~ Mike

Seven of the Group met on the 15th September to discuss "Other Minds", under the leadership of Lorne. Our next meeting is at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday 20th October. The venue is 38 Canal Hill and we will address the next Chapter of What does it all mean? - "The Mind-Body Problem" Please let Carol know if you expect to be with us, to

assist with the catering. Anyone wishing to join the group should also contact Carol. Co-ordinator: Carol Hamer (01884 259356) David Hamer (academic lead)

Four of us met at Roger’s house for our monthly meeting. Tim fascinated us with some old museum photos of Tiverton from around 1900 to the mid 70s (not taken personally), views from the old stone bridge over the exe of Heathcote’s factory flooded in the early 60’s, Fore Street with two way traffic etc scenes, which many of us

remembered, but not as far back as 1900. We were able to trace the photography shop that produced the photo from information on the picture and the use of Google Maps. Further shots of River Exe scenes, followed by a couple of videos by midnight productions, ie. Mr Gunn’s. Ben The next meeting is the Thursday 14th October at Roger’s house and the subject is “Self portrait” or if that is too horrific rope in a close relative!! ~ Roger

The subject of our last meeting was "Churches". Most pictures were of those in the Tiverton area, but there were some of Dunster church included. I was interesting to see the variety of architectural styles relating to different periods of construction, even within the same church in some cases. As usual there were some

challenges regarding lighting conditions and shadows to overcome, but that all adds to the learning experience. The theme for our next meeting is "interesting doors". - Charlie

Our latest Quiz Night on 10th September was a little different than usual in that competitors were challenged by a team of questioners in the form of the Vintage Movers. On this occasion the combined talents of Nigel, Carol, Angie and Mike provided a wide set of questions to keep members on their toes. Despite their best efforts, Angela Woodhead emerged victorious yet again. Congratulations to Angela

and thanks to the VM for setting the questions. Our next Quiz Night will be on Friday 8th October at 7pm when Angela will set the questions (that's one way to stop her winning ). As usual, all are welcome. If you’d like to join us, please get in touch – Tony Lowe

Dulverton is probably as far as anybody would wish to travel for a 2-3 hour ramble but this proved a popular venue for our September outing. No less than 23 walkers passed their navigational skills test and found the start. point in a far corner of Dulverton whilst one member completely lost the plot andwent straight to the pub! A lesson for us all – DO read your newsletter notes before you leave home.

This little glitch was admirably handled by leader John Smith who directed the culprit to the chosen path where he eventually found the group; thank heavens for mobile phones. The first part of the route was very easy walking near the river Barle and along country lanes to Brushford where we picked up the former railway track and then found a very pleasant uphill stretch over a small range of hills taking us to a high point of some 200 metres. This feat was rewarded with the usual banana stop before another small ascent across fields and a final bit of downhill back into Dulverton.

Single file please, children. Many thanks John for a delightful walk. Our next ramble is on the 12th October and starts at 10 am from the large car park at Haddon Hill, SS 969285. For most of us this is best approached from Bampton but there are other routes (for the adventurous). Our leader Phil Akers has devised a new circular route around parts of the hill you may not have found before, a few modest undulations and, hopefully some good views across Wimbleball and the surrounding countryside. This is mainly heath and moorland with a bit of woodland walking. and a distance of about 5 miles. Lunch to be arranged. - Mike

Our next meeting takes places usual on the day after the main meeting, on Friday 24 September at 10.30am. As I have failed to find a suitable venue, and also some people are still nervous about meeting indoors, this will again take place by Zoom, and we will be watching the next part of Full Steam Ahead, and hopefully something else as well. It will be a new Zoom link, so please don’t use the

old one. I will send a new link to group members when I receive it from Mike. If you are not on my group list but would like to join the meeting, please contact me and I will send the link. The October meeting will be on Friday 22 October at 10.30am. I will be checking with group members whether they prefer this to be in person or continue by Zoom at the October meeting and by e-mail for those who don’t do Zoom, and I will confirm it to the group members. - Jose

We are now able to confirm that Skittles social evenings will restart on Monday 4th October at 7 pm. The new location will be at Tiverton Town Football Club in their function room accessed through the newly revamped Sports Bar. The charge will be £3 per person and we will play until 8.30 pm. Drinks will be available at the bar but there is no food available on Mondays. There is plenty of parking at the

Club. We hope existing players will be happy with this change and indeed it may mean additional members would be able to make a Monday evening. Please contact Janet if you would now be able to play. John (01404 841367). &. Janet (01884 252116)

A small, social group catering for all levels of Snooker ability (up to "average"!). Our normal meeting time at Halberton Village Hall is 2:00 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Friday each month. Conveniently, buses from Tiverton stop at the door,

so you can use your bus-pass to get there. I am a keyholder for opening up. As from August 2021, we have started playing again, so give me a ring beforehand if you would like to join in and have a game or two. - John

It is good to be able to give you details of Local Theatre for 2022, February 22nd – Sat.26th 2022 the Junior Operatic Club will be putting on the Musical “Back to the Nineties “. I usually do our block booking for the Thursday evening. This is a very talented award-winning group, well worth supporting. Look out for further details in the coming months - Betty. 01884 242998

The August Short Trek was led by Elizabeth and took us into the Blackdown Hills. Initially on narrow country lanes, we crossed the mainline railway and the M5 and then climbed gradually up to Sampford Common, with magnificent views. One highlight was a

fly past of two WW2 fighter planes - a Spitfire and a Hurricane. These, we presumed were en route to the Sidmouth Airshow. Descending from the common through lovely beechwoods, we walked through Sampford Arundel to the car park at the Beambridge where some of us enjoyed a drink or two in their garden. Thanks, Elizabeth, for a varied and enjoyable trek. On Sampford Common September’s Short Trek was to Lundy Island. Report and photos in the next. Newsletter. (you can also see some pictures on our Facebook page) Sue will be leading October's Short Trek on Friday 22nd. This will be on the north side of Dunkery Beacon, a favourite place for autumnal colour. Webber's Post would involve a long, uphill finish, so instead the start is from the National Trust C.P. at Horner, only mile or two further on (good toilets and ice creams!) - OS 898454 (on right c. 200yds. after tea rooms if driving over Dunkery). An easyish stroll mostly along the edge of woods leads to the beautiful village of Luccombe, then it's the long climb to Webber's Post - a considerable pull but quite bearable if you stop to admire the village houses, many with bread ovens, and the attractive wooded gully on the way up (benches with great views could be useful at the top). Then it's downhill on a wooded lane with a diversion higher up along the Boys' Path (!) to the ford at East Water (bridge provided) before a shortish ascent to Cloutsham Farm and its open fields, with views across to Wales in good weather. There's a steep but good downhill track afterwards - poles very advisable! - to then follow Horner Water back to the start. 6.7 miles - 10am start.

October 2021 15

Please note that there are countless easy opportunities to shorten the route (I'll bring extra maps), so come if the colours are good. - Sue Looking ahead, the December short trek will be on the 17th and will be around Bampton, followed by Christmas lunch at The Swan. The pub can accommodate a maximum of 30 diners, and it is necessary to pay a deposit of £5.00 pp to confirm this booking. I therefore need definite numbers by the end of October. Non walkers and non-diners are welcome to join the group. - Nigel

The group meets every Monday from 10 am to 12 noon at Sunningmead Community Centre. We have four tables and generally play doubles to ensure that everyone gets as many games as possible during the session. There is a weekly charge of £3.00, which includes coffee or

tea. Newcomers are welcome, and we endeavour to help those with less experience of the game. Anyone interested in finding out about joining the group should contact one of us. - Katherine and Lorne.

On a rainy day in September, twenty eager diners descended on the Mount Pleasant in Nomansland. The staff made us very welcome and seated us altogether in the old forge, which is now part of the pub. The food was tasty and well presented, and the portions were certainly generous. Nevertheless, a few

brave souls tackled the dessert menu and were well pleased. – Nigel

Our next outing will be to The Red Lion, at Broadclyst, organised by Ray and Vera. The Red Lion offers a superb location to enjoy high quality food in a comfortable atmosphere amidst the charm and rustic features preserved in this delightful 16th C Inn, quietly located in the centre of the village.

If you were with us at the lunch on 9th September, and signed up to come, you will have received directions. If you would like to join us and receive directions, please let me know asap as numbers will be limited, first come first served. - Angie

Eight trekkers completed a squashed loop starting and ending near Warren House Inn. The first phase took us on an eastern bearing through the spoils of Birch Tor tin mine, across the saddle between King Tor and Hamel Down and down to join the Mariners' Way southwards through the wonderfully varied arboretum of Heathercombe woodlands. After that we doubled back to the memorial for the 1941 bomber crash before turning

sharp left to complete the circuit back to the ever-reliable fire and beer-tap welcome offered by the Warren Inn. A ten-mile outing (on a generous gadget reading) of which the unfortunate injured Phil had to limp for four. Glasses were raised by a rare full complement of walkers to thank Mike for leading yet another varied and enjoyable Dartmoor outing.

The October Trek – Bats Castle

The 10.5 mile trek, on the 7th October, will start at 10am from Nutcombe Bottom car park (SS-978-424) and will be led by Ben Mayo. On the A396 heading towards Minehead about 2.25 miles past Timberscombe and about 0.75 mile before Dunster there is a signpost on the right leading to Luxborough and Nutcombe Bottom, drive along this narrow lane and at a fork with a cottage in the middle take the right hand, and the car park is on the left a little further on.

A varied walk, through woodland, fields, commons and villages. The tracks are well made and mainly dry except for a couple of places which may be a bit muddy in wet weather. There are two hills to speak of, the first starts immediately and is 955 ft. (291 meters) spread over 2.75 miles, so the gradient is reasonable, the second is 510 ft. (155 meters), spread over 0.75 miles.

The route goes anticlockwise and passes through woodland up to Withycombe and Rodhuish commons, then down to Rodhuish Farm and on to Withycombe village. Here the second hill takes us up to Withycombe Hill via the “MacMillan Way” and across to Bats Castle (Iron Age fort) and Gallox Hill (settlement) then back down to. the car park. Weather permitting there will be cracking views from the hill-tops of the surrounding villages and Bristol Channel.

In September we had one of our best meals ever at the Blue Ball at Sampford Moor, near Wellington. My wife had Hunters Chicken which was the best she has ever tasted and my Lamb was superb. Comments from other members were just as complimentary, indicating a

return visit had to be on the cards. The friendliness and service from the staff complemented the afternoon. Many thanks to Anne Brady for this recommendation which we will certainly take up again in the future.

Our next lunch will be on 6th October at the Rose & Crown Calverleigh which was recommended by Marilyn & Maurice. If you have not booked, and would like to come, please contact me [email protected] or 01884 254837 I Look forward to seeing you there. - Trevor
