The Tidal Wave of Data Continues …

The amount of digital information continues to grow exponentially …

And we need to keep more of it, longer …

And the costs of losing data are unacceptable …– Lost revenues– Lost customer confidence– Embarrassment in the market– Fines from contracts, government

agencies– CEO and CFO could go to jail

Tivoli Storage Manager 6 Extended Edition includes data deduplication for disk storage pools, at no extra charge

Improves recovery times as many more recovery points can be stored on disk; or reduces the amount of capacity needed

Operates as a post-process / no impact on backup performance / automatic space reclamation

NewNew Built-in Data Deduplication

Enhanced Data Reduction

Tivoli Storage Manager 6, combining progressive incremental data capture with data deduplication, does a better job of reducing storage capacity requirements than pure data deduplication solutions

40% increase* in the amount of data available for recovery from disk (compared to TSM 5.5)– Adds to the benefits of progressive incremental data capture

and data compression technologies

Effective with data from any source, – including: API, backup, HSM, archive

Built into Tivoli Storage Manager 6 – not an add-on solution

.Results will vary depending on user’s environment, systems/processors, type of data, expiration policies, data change rates, etc *

17

A data reduction technology– Complements existing progressive-incremental data capture

Eliminates redundant subfiles (known as chunks, blocks, or extents)

Only one instance is stored for each common chunk

Duplicate instances of the chunk point to the stored chunk

Tape Reclamation

Better utilizes tapes, thus, saving money

Tape utilization constantly monitored

User-defined reclamation threshold

Can be scheduled to occur at specified times

When free space reaches threshold

– Tape is mounted – Valid data is moved to another

tape– Original tape is returned to the

scratch pool

Tivoli Storage Manager V6.1 supports IBM sub-capacity licensing terms and conditions for IBM Passport Advantage customers.

Sub-capacity licensing is an excellent compliment to Processor Value Unit (PVU) licensing.

The PVU metric provides a fair price for value received, and is based on the performance capacity of one processor core.

Sub-capacity licensing lets customers license to a subset of the server capacity, down to one core, by leveraging eligible virtualization technologies.

As x86 architecture multi-core chips (from Intel and AMD for example) add more cores per chip, customers can use Sub-capacity licensing to reduce the number of cores licensed.

As RISC based servers continue to become more powerful, customers can leverage virtualization technologies to optimize their system design and improve their overall total cost of ownership.
