Paw - Pouri, the TKC newsletter, is published nine times per year (monthly from January thru June, September thru October, and a combined Nov/December issue). With this issue, I begin my fourth year as its editor. It has been a lot of fun. As a relatively new member, it has also helped me meet many members and learn more about our club.

I’d like to make a few reminders:

• Submissions should be sent by the 6th of the month (by the 18th for the Nov/Dec issue); this gives me time to design and layout the newsletter.

• Submissions should be emailed to [email protected] and always have “TKC” in the subject line - this makes it easy for me to search my inbox to find them.

TKC Board Minutes

September 3, 2019Present: Lorie Shaw, Mary Kaufman, Rhoda

The meeting was called to order at 6:40pm. Joyce Wilson made the motion that the minutes from

the June 4, 2019 Board Meeting be accepted as amended. Linda Gosik seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

President’s report: No report.

First Vice President’s report: Mary Kaufman reported that Mike Roehrs will present the September program, October will be costumes and dog games, and November/December will be the annual dinner and auction.

Second Vice President: No report Corresponding Secretary: Teresa Pike reported

that one membership application, Liz Gaulke, was sent to Jacqueline Campbell for publication.

Recording Secretary: No report Treasurer’s report: Donna Anderson reported

that we have $60,616.27 in the checking account, $21,256.74 in CD#1, $25,590.00 in CD#2, and $20,422.44 in CD#3, for a total of $127,885.45.

Property Manager: Linda Gosik reported that we have two estimates for the parking lot and are waiting for a third estimate. Mary Kaufman reported that she met with the director of the nursing home. It is now owned by a conglomerate but he will try to get them to contribute to the parking lot repairs. They will continue to cover mowing and snow removal.

Obedience Director: April Shaw shared information about the fall class schedule. The Novice Obedience class will be held on Fridays at 6:00pm.

Conformation Director: Sarah Armstrong reported, via Mary Kaufman, that several people were interested in teaching conformation.

Obedience/Rally trials: Rhoda Bennett reported that the February Obedience Trial applications are approved. Mary Kaufman reported that Bonnie Flowers is willing to chair an Obedience trial weekend. Bonnie will chair the November, 2020 Obedience trials and Mary

will chair the February 2021 Obedience trials. There have been several requests that we offer team and brace classes at the Rally Trials. That will not be possible for November but Mary Kaufman will ask Deanna German about the Spring Trials.

Scentwork Trials: There was a brief discussion regarding premiums, closing dates and a possible judge.

June Show: Joyce Wilson reported that Tina Leach resigned as Hospitality Chairperson for the June Shows. There was a discussion regarding Fast Cat, the Eye Clinic, and Dock Diving. The TKC Board agreed that Lyn Kalinoski and Shelley Hennessy will receive a free class in appreciation for their judging at the June Shows.

Unfinished business: • There was a discussion regarding new matting. A

mat committee was appointed. Members are Lorie Shaw, Donna Anderson, and Mary Kaufman.

• There was a brief discussion about keeping track of member hours worked, as well as length of membership, to be eligible for class discounts, vouchers, and a key. Laura LaForest will write an explanation of the Member Volunteer Log. Lorie Shaw will work on the key contract.

New Business: • Laura LaForest reported that Jeff LaForest has

volunteered to manage the TKC website. Laura LaForest will contact Sarah Armstrong to find out how to access the website. Joyce Wilson moved that we secure ToledoKennelClub.com and have Jeff LaForest manage our website. April Shaw seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Donna Anderson moved and Teresa Pike seconded that we purchase three years of web hosting. The domain cost will be $12.00 and the three years of hosting will be $139.68. The motion passed unanimously.

• Mary Kaufman reported that the date for the Andy’s Army event has been changed to October 6, 2019.

Rhoda Bennett made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. April Shaw seconded the motion which passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 9:28pm.

TKC Members Meeting Minutes

September 26, 2019Following a very interesting and informative

presentation by Mike Roehrs, the meeting was called to order by President Lorie Shaw, at 7:43 pm. Several guests introduced themselves and were welcomed. Gail Sype made the motion that the minutes from the June Membership meeting be approved. Sandi Pross seconded the motion which passed unanimously.

President’s report: Lorie Shaw noted that TKC members have had a busy summer based on the “brags” on the chalkboard.

First Vice President: Mary Kaufman reported that next month is the Halloween party with games and the costume contest. We are considering flipping the meeting and program times to have the party last. If this happens, it will be announced on the Facebook page, website and in the newsletter.

Second Vice President, Recording Secretary, and Corresponding Secretary: No report

Treasurer’s report: Donna Anderson reported that CD #1 has $21,256.74, CD #2 has $25,590.00, and CD#3 has $20,422.44. There is $61,106.53 in the checking account for a total of $128,375.71. Donna reported that we will be paying the IRS $200.00 and will pay the CPA $570.00.

Conformation Director: No report

Obedience Director: April Shaw reported that classes are in their 3rd week and the class numbers are up. There will be a TDI test on 10/5/19. A new registration form will be used for the next class session, which starts the week of 11/4/19. Deanna German reported that her husband, Ed Zawodny, is offering a drop in Hunt Test class on Fridays , 7:00pm-9:00pm. Regular drop in fees apply.

Property Manager: Linda Gosik reported that the Board met prior to the membership meeting to discuss the bids for the parking lot and are making the recommendation that the bid from Morelock Asphalt, LTD, be accepted. The cost of filling the cracks is $ 2,800.00, with the total cost of sealing the parking lot, crack filling and re-striping being $7,380.00. The crack filling should be completed this year but the rest of the job will probably be completed in the spring. Pat Lofgren made the motion that we accept

Morelock’s bid. Deanna German seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

June Show: Joyce Wilson reported that she is working on the June, 2020 show.

November Rally Trials: Vikkie Lewis reported that the premium is out, Carol Lamb will be the Chief Ring Steward, and a Hospitality Chairperson is needed.

November Obedience Trials: Mary Kaufman reported that the judges will be Ted Walshesky and Nancy Glabicki and the judges for the February Obedience trial will be Catherine Thompson and Kathleen Cook. Both Trials are in need of a Hospitality Chair and a Chief Ring Steward.

Other Trials: Deanna German reported that Joni Monnich and Anita Eisthen will judge the March Rally Trials. Pairs and Teams will be offered in the second trial each day.

Barb Bumcrots reported that the next Scentwork Trial will be in January, 2020.

Unfinished business:

• Pat Lofgren reported that four walkie talkies have been purchased.

• There was a discussion regarding future venues for the June Show. Joyce Wilson is in contact with the people at Lucas County Fairgrounds.

New Business:

• The TKC Board is researching new mats for the building.

• Lorie Shaw requested assistance to replace the batteries in the security cameras. Lorie Shaw will purchase the batteries and Mike Roehrs offered to help with the replacement.

• Mary Kaufman shared information about the Andy’s Army walk on 10/6/19. If you are interested in being part of the TKC team, please complete the form and put it in the envelope on the table.

• Laura LaForest shared information about new TKC apparel. There are several items available for purchase, which can be ordered in a variety of colors. Other choices are also available through the catalog which is online.

Penny Dreps reports that Georgia received her Dock Diving AKC Senior Dock Jumper title on July 18th. Her next title will be Mom. 

Darla Holtz is pleased to announce that Joey earned his Preferred Utility title Saturday Sept. 14, 2019 at the Shetland Sheepdog Specialty near Flint, MI.

“He put forth his best that day. I can say he is one of the best Shelties I have had the pleasure to own  Maybe he owns me. Love them all.” 

Mary Kaufman is delighted to share that Ember was the Golden Retriever Reserve Winners Bitch at the Monroe KC Show on Sun. Sept. 29!

Bonnie Flower’s Kipp recently earned his UDX2.

Jacqueline Campbell wants to thank Bonnie Flowers for the past year of coaching and confidence building. Velo and I had success at the Monroe KC shows last month and earned her CDX with two first places and one second place. On to Graduate Open!

My youngster Zazz won WB and BOW both days at Monroe to add two more points toward her conformation championship. This past weekend Zazz showed her heart out to receive Reserve Winners Bitch both days at the Fulton County Show against an outstanding class of girls who’d just come back from wins at Briard Nationals. “I’m very happy to see how enthusiastically she works with her handler in the ring.”

Brags, General Membership

Meeting (cont) & Building Schedule

Gail Sypes reports that Harlie received his first leg in Beginner Novice August 10 at Lansing.  The rest of the summer he has earned his SIA and SBN at TKC and his SCA at Ft Wayne. 

Gail and George Sype proudly welcome, Killara's Deal Me In At Istari to our family.  Harlie has a 2.5 year old happy Field Spaniel brother named Dealer. What a sweetheart.

BUILDING SCHEDULE & EVENTS

In addition to the weekly training classes and open practice sessions on page 1, the building is also scheduled:

October 19-20, 2019 Bulldog Club November 16-17, 2019 TKC Rally Trials November 22-24, 2019 TKC Obedience Trials

Reminder: The building is closed for cleaning during midday on Fridays (except the week of General Membership meetings when it is closed on Thursdays). Cleaning typically occurs from 10:00am - 2:00pm.

Please remove your crates for the cleaning crew. Please clean dishes used and return to drawers or cabinets. Also, please put mats in a single stack along the wall.

General Membership Meeting (cont from page 3)

• Jeff LaForest has volunteered to be the person adding information to the TKC website. Laura LaForest will be the contact person to have information posted.

• Laura LaForest shared information about the volunteer notebook, which will be used to keep track of volunteer hours. There is a form for everyone with blank forms in the back if there isn’t one with your name on it. Each member needs to complete 16 hours of volunteer work for the Club to be eligible for class discounts, and to apply for a key.

• Lorie Shaw reported that the outside door and the office door have been found open. She reminds us to please make sure that the lights are out and all doors are locked if you are the last one leaving the building.

Sandi Pross made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Gail Sype seconded the motion. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm.
