Welcome to the 14th Annual Texas Karate Organizations 2012 State Championships!

On Saturday, November 10, 2012, we are pleased to invite you to Texas’ 14th Annual T.K.O. (Texas Karate Organization) state tournament. As you know, the T.K.O. State Championship continues to bring together diverse styles and unites martial artists into one spectacular event. For many years, we have been sanction-

ing tournaments that provides top level of competition throughout Texas! The TKO State Finals event prom-ises to draw top competition from all over the United States. We invite all ages, ranks and styles to compete

and become a real state champion!

This year we will be introducing “TKO Qualifier” sanctioned events! Only tournaments that is a “TKO

Qualifier” will use TKO rules. Competitors that competes at a “TKO Qualifier” will earn double points to-wards the 2012 TKO State Finals. You can expect to see similar rules and divisions at a “TKO Qualifier” and the TKO State Finals. You can get a copy of the official TKO rules at www.WayneNguyen.com.

To qualify, each competitor must compete and earn points at any karate tournament that is sanctioned by T.K.O. A competitor who places at a T.K.O. rated event receives points toward the rating. A competitor can accumulate points in sparring, forms, weapons and self-

defense. The state tournament is open to anyone regardless of being a T.K.O. member; however, all T.K.O. members will be eligible to be seeded (placed in a preferred position of competition) at the state finals. Non seeded competitors will be seeded as wild card players. The winner of the wild card players will then advance with the seeded players to compete for the state title. We will be using TKO rules for the

T.K.O. state finals. All competitors are required to email or mail in their tabulated points before the November 5th deadline. The season be-gins February 1 and ends November of each year.

This year’s event will be held inside Dallas / Fort Worth , Texas (Location TBA). The Dallas / Ft. Worth area is full of attractions for tourists. You will find plenty of shopping, tourist attractions, sports, great dining, amusement parks, zoos, museums and recreational activities. We

promise you will enjoy the Saturday day competition, followed by enjoying your weekend in Dallas. To celebrate this year’s state event, we will be awarding all first place winners a “TEXAS STATE CHAMPION” Title Belt! And NEW for

2012! All 2nd and 3rd place will receive a “TKO Champion” Karate Belt! Numerous local, regional, and national media will publicize and cover the “Texas Karate Organization 2012 State Championship.” We welcome all martial arts enthusiasts to experience what it takes to be the next “STATE CHAMPION!”

2011 TKO State Championships

By Johnnie Murphy

For the last 13 years TKO Founder Wayne Nguyen has led his TKO organization to a major spot in the Texas sport karate scene. The 2011 State championships were held November 5, 2011 at the Garcia Middle School in Sugarland, Texas just southwest of Houston, Texas. The first years of the TKO helped launched the careers of many current adult champions. The TKO has also helped many of the current junior Texas state, national and world champions to fame in Sport karate. The list is long with champions like Sage and Colby Northcutt, Clarissa and Marco Villanueva and many other well known Texas Champi-ons traveling the long road to the top.

Competitors from all over Texas came to win one of the custom TKO State Championship belts. All styles were represented as over 150 divisions were offered representing all age groups, ranks and divisions. Some of the more artistic divisions were weapons and forms where the best champions in Texas were showing off there talents in an attempt to be crowned state champion. Dewy Sutton, one of TKO’s co founder ran the event with the help of the best Texas prompters and officials like Master Paul, Daryl Stewart, Norman Roberts, Jessie Benavidez and many other TKO organization members.

The tournament started off with the usual weapons and forms divisions that included both adults and juniors. This represented beginners to black belt. Some of the adult and junior winners in-cluded Jean Hoang, Angie Pardo, Andrea Hepler, Aliya Cyril, Alfredo Bustamante, Kayla Kap-lan, Robert Montifar , Larry Fields and William Sheldon. Many more champions were crowned in the weapons and forms champions by days end. Sparring divisions were equally impressive with amazing talent vying for the top spots at this years championships. The Amazing Jersan Kannady was unstoppable as he headed up one of the largest divisions in adult sparring . Other black belt champions included Larry Field, Charles Shed, Karen Schroeder as well as a number of highly charged junior point sparring contestants.

All divisions concluded on time with efficiently ran divisions and excellent judging. The State Grand Champions were ran last with a monster junior black belt forms and weapons group vying for the beautiful Walt Mason Eagle grand Championship award. Junior divisional champions were phenomenal. They were all entertaining and in the end it was 7 year old Kung Fu Jean Hoang ending up with the grand championship. Jean ran her flashy and dynamic kung fu form. Alfredo Bustamante took home the black belt adult forms grand championship with his powerful traditional Japanese form.

The sparring grand championships were last up with the women going at it. When the smoke cleared Karen Shoeder was the women’s grand champion. Last up was the adult men’s black belt point sparring. After a series of fights, it was old school vs new school between Larry Fields and Jersan Kannady. It came down to a close match but Jersam emerged as the 2011 TKO men’s point sparring grand champion. This completed the 2011 TKO State Championships. Next years TKO State Championships will be held in Dallas Texas on November 10, 2012.

Taking Texas Sport Karate into the New Millennium

People get involved with martial arts for a variety of reasons – to learn self-discipline, self-defense, self-confidence, lose weight or just a desire to become karate champions! Today Texas competition has grown in popularity. Black belts, advanced belts, intermediates and beginners have more events to choose to compete in as

compared to previous years where forms and sparring were their only choices. For example, one competitor could enter weapons (creative, traditional, musical and non

-musical), forms (creative, traditional, musical and non-musical), continuous sparring, self-defense, choreographed self-defense, and grappling, just to name a few.

Since types of events are no longer limited, why should martial artists be limited to competing in one organization? With the birth of Texas Karate Organization

(TKO) existing organizations such as AOK, NBL, NASKA, can sanction with TKO, using their own unique rules at each of their tournaments and still be related

through a common tie. Being sanctioned by TKO, promoters can expect a steady growth in tournament registrations, which will create a higher level of competition among the competitors.

TKO promises to endeavor to bring sport karate in Texas to a new level. The TKO publications will unite formerly separate leagues by making martial artists’ names

familiar to each other and by forming friendships that span the state. You can expect to see TKO publications recognizing new and up-and-coming faces as well as reviewing current tournaments.
