Section Ill. OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT

12. General

a. The instructions in this section are pub-lished for the information and guidance of thepersonnel responsible for the operation of thesurveying target set.

b. The operator must know how to performevery operation of which the surveying targetset is capable. This section gives instructionon centering the optical plummet, centeringbelow apex mark, checking the optical plummetand checking the target. Since nearly every jobpresents a different problem, the operator mayhave to vary given procedures to fit the indi-vidual job.

13. Centering With Optical Plummet

a. The eyepiece of the optical plummet (fig.3) must be turned until its plumbing markappears in focus. At the same time the stationmark on the ground will be seen, over whichthe instrument must be centered.

b. Loosen the fixing screw of the tripodslightly to allow the tribrach to be shifted untilthe ground mark appears in the center of theplumbing mark.

c. During the shifting, the bubble in the cir-cular level must be maintained exactly in thecenter.

d. Tighten the fixing screw.e. Center the target level. Then turn the

target through 90° and center the level bubblewith the third leveling screw. Repeat this pro-cedure until the bubble remains centralthroughout a 360° rotation of the target. Thebubble should now be centered in any position. If not, adjust the circular level.

14. Centering Below apex Mark

In galleries, the station points are oftenmarked by hooks cemented in the roof. In thiscase, fix a plumb line on the hook, so that thepoint of the plumb will be just at the height ofthe upper center mark (fig. 12) of the target.Shift the target on the tripod until its markis vertically below the plumb point when the

bubble of the circular level is centered. Thenlevel the target with reference to the targetlevel (para 13e).

15. Surveying Target Set Operation

a. Setting Up Tripod. For angular measure-ments, the instruments must be set up over apoint of the terrain which has been determinedpreviously. The plug-in sleeve of the plumb lineis plugged into the central fixing screw frombelow and secured by a quarter turn to theright. The tripod is then set up so that theplumb-bob, which hangs from the middle ofthe central opening, points to the station pointfrom within ½ inch, and the tripod’s plate isapproximately horizontal. To achieve this, theleg, whose turning axis at the tripod plate isinclined most, must be displaced laterally. Anyother method will affect the centering. The legpoints are set firmly into the soil, with carebeing taken to maintain the centering within½ to 1 inch. Now the plumb-bob may be re-moved if the final centering is to be doneoptically. Otherwise in calm weather the plumb-bob may be used on its own.

b. Securing Base Plate of Tribrach. Thetribrach itself is located on a star shaped baseplate, where the three leveling screws (fig. 4)are kept fast by a rotatable spring plate. Thespring plate is normally held in position frombelow by means of a lock screw. Withdrawingthis screw allows the spring plate to be rotateda few degrees. The base plate is thus releasedand can be separated from the tribrach. Fornormal use, the spring plate should always besecured to prevent the tribrach from fallingout.

c. Fixing and Leveling the Tribrach. Thetribrach is fixed to the tripod with the centralfixing screw. The circular level bubble is cen-tered by turning the leveling screws.

d. Fixing the Target. ‘Turn the lock platelevel (fig. 4) towards the right. Insert the feetof the target into the corresponding holes ofthe tribrach and turn the lever firmly towardsthe left until it snaps over the clutch and holdsthe target fast.

The item name and a brief descriptionof the part are shown.A five-digit Federal supply code formanufacturers and/or other supplyserve is shown in parentheses, fol-lowed by the manufacturer’s partnumber. This number will be used forrequisitioning purposes when no Fed-eral stock number is indicated in theFederal stock number column.Example: (08645) 86453.

d. Unit of Issue. If no abbreviation is shownin this column, the unit of issue is “each.”

e. Quantity Incorporated in Unit. The actualnumber of parts used in the application indi-cated is shown in this column.

f. 15-Day Organizational Maintenance Allow-ance. Shown for each repair part is either aquantity or an asterisk allocation which indi-cates the following:

(1)

(2)

(3)

A guide quantity factor is shown foreach repair part authorized to bestocked by organizational mainte-nance. This quantity is based on pastexperience with similar items and thelatest mortality data for 700 hoursoperation per year. It is the averagequantity required to provide one pre-scribed load for 1-5 and/or 6-10items of equipment for a 15-dayperiod under average combat condi-tions.

Note. Combat essential items which mustbe stocked or on order at organizationalmaintenance at all times, regardless of de-mand, will be identified in the allowancecolumn by a quantity in parentheses. The quantity of repair parts author-ized for stockage in accordance withthe number of prescribed loads by themajor commander are determined byusing table 1.Table 1 is a consolidation of itemsquantitatively allocated in this manual.Quantities listed are for one pre-scribed load for a 15-day period. Aminimum stockage sufficient to repairone item and/or assembly is author-ized (e.g., if 3 belts are required, then3 belts are allocated as the minimumstockage). This quantity will be indi-cated in the minimum stockage au-thorization column.

Units and organizations authorizedmore than one prescribed load willmultiply the quantity listed in theappropriate end item density spreadcolumn of 1-5 or 6-10 by the numberof prescribed loads. When more than 10 equipments re-quire support, multiply the quantitylisted in the 6-10 column by the num-ber of equipments and the number ofauthorized prescribed loads, divide by10, and round to the nearest wholenumber.Example: If the quantity listed in the6-10 column is 4, the number of equip-ments is 17, and the number of au-thorized prescribed loads is 1, thefollowing formula would be used:

4 × 17 × 1÷ 10 = 6.8The resulting fraction is 0.8 thereforethe authorized stockage is 7.Example: If the quantity listed in the6-10 column is 4, the number of equip-ments is 17, and the number of au-thorized prescribed loads is 3, thefollowing formula. would be used:

4 × 17 × 3 ÷ 10 = 20.4The resulting fraction is 0.4; there-fore the authorized stockage is 20.

Note. An exception is made for thoseunits and organizations required to haveon hand, boxed or packaged prescribedload(s) pursuant to a special mission as-signment. Such prescribed load(s) will becomputed or selected separately from quan-tities authorized for stockage at permanentstation.

Repair parts required to performorganizational maintenance, which arenot authorized for stockage are iden-tified by an asterisk, and are to berequisitioned for immediate use only.Subsequent changes to allowances willbe limited as follows:

(a)

(b)

34

No decrease in the stated quantityof combat essential items is au-thorized.No change in the range of items isauthorized. If exception to the pre-scribed load listing or revision toallowance is considered necessary, a

(c)

recommendation should be for-warded to the U.S. Army MobilityEquipment Center (para 6).Decreases in the stated quantity ofitems other than combat essentialitems are authorized to a minimumquantity sufficient to repair oneitem and/or assembly and increasesin the stated quantity are author-ized for all items when justified bydemand and usage experience.Detailed procedures for performingthese adjustments are prescribed inAR 735-35.

g. Guide Quantities Per 100 Equipments.Shown for each repair part applicable directand general support, and/or depot maintenanceis either an allowance factor or an asteriskallocation which indicates the following:

(1)

(2)

A guide quantity factor is shown foreach part authorized to be stocked bydirect and general support mainte-nance and supply support activities, and the number of repair partsrecommended for depot maintenance. This factor is based on the latestmortality data for 700 hours operationper year and is the average quantityrequired by the various maintenanceactivities to provide maintenance andsupply support for 100 items of equip-ment for a 15-day period under aver-age combat conditions. The quantities of repair parts author-ized for stockage are determined usingthe following mathematical formula:

Quantity of equipment to be sup-ported, multiplied by the listedallowance factor, divided by 100.

Fractions derived from the use of theabove formula will be rounded towhole numbers as follows: If the re-sult is 1 or more and includes a frac-tion that is 0.5 or more, the quantityis rounded to the next higher number.Example: If the number of equipmentsupported is 30 and the allowancefactor for 100 equipments is 5, thefollowing formula would be used:

30 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1.5

AGO 10139A

Page 39: TM 5-6675-244-15 - Liberated Manuals.com 5-6675-244-15 department of the army technical manual organlzational, ds, gs, and depot maintenance manual including repair parts and special

The resulting fraction is 0.5; there-fore, the stockage is 2. If the result is1 or more and includes a fraction ofless than 0.5, the quantity is roundedto the next lower number. When thecomputed result is less than 0.5, noquantity is authorized for direct andgeneral support, and depot mainte-nance. However, if the item is combatessential, a quantity of 1 is authorized.Example: If the number of equipmentsupported is 30 and the allowancefactor for 100 equipments is 28, thefollowing formula would be used:

30 × 28 ÷ 100 = 8.4The resulting fraction is less than 0.5;therefore, the stockage is 8.

(3) In the guide quantity columns fordirect and general support mainte-nance, additional repair parts author-ized for use but not for initial stock-age, are listed without a guidequantity factor. These items are iden-tified by an asterisk and maybe addedto or deleted from stock when recordeddemand experience justifies a changein stockage objective.

(4) Parts that may be required for depotmaintenance, in addition to thoseallocated, are identified by a asterisk. These parts are to be requisitioned, when required, if not obtainable fromreclamation, fabrication, or localprocurement.

(5) Combat essential items of a criticalnature which must be stocked at directand general support maintenance atall times, regardless of demand areidentified in the allowance column byinclosing the allowance factor inparentheses.

This fine document...

Was brought to you by me:

Liberated Manuals -- free army and government manuals

Why do I do it? I am tired of sleazy CD-ROM sellers, who take publicly available information, slap “watermarks” and other junk on it, and sell it. Those masters of search engine manipulation make sure that their sites that sell free information, come up first in search engines. They did not create it... They did not even scan it... Why should they get your money? Why are not letting you give those free manuals to your friends?

I am setting this document FREE. This document was made by the US Government and is NOT protected by Copyright. Feel free to share, republish, sell and so on.

I am not asking you for donations, fees or handouts. If you can, please provide a link to liberatedmanuals.com, so that free manuals come up first in search engines:
