It all started with a small print run of aself-published comic that debuted inMay 1984.
Back then, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird shared a workspace theydubbed “Mirage Studios.” The namealluded to the fact that there was noactual studio, just a shared area theyused to draw in. One night, in an effortto one-up each other creatingridiculous ideas, the two stumbled upon the concept of “Teenage MutantNinja Turtles.”
From those unlikely beginnings spranga pop-culture phenomenon that quicklyrose to worldwide fame. Now, thirtyyears after the Turtles first emergedfrom the sewers, Turtlemania is stillgoing strong. We can’t think of a betterway to celebrate this momentousanniversary than by revisiting some ofthe Turtle universes, and the artisticteams behind them, that have sogreatly contributed to the phenomenon.

The first TMNT comic series, laterdubbed “Volume 1,” lasted sixty-twoissues from 1984 to 1993. For the firstyears, Kevin and Peter did the lion’sshare of the work, writing, penciling, and inking the series together.
As the book‘s popularity exploded, they brought on fellow artists andwriters to help tell new stories in adazzling variety of styles. But thefundamental look and spirit of thebook was anchored by Eastman andLaird’s art.
Their dedication to helping othercomics creators was also a majordriving force, from Laird’s 1992founding of the Xeric Foundation tothis story by Eastman in the 2012edition of Hero Comics, a publicationof the Hero Initiative, which helpscomics creators in need.
In “Ready, Set, Go,” Eastman harkensback to the “duotone” shading processthat was a hallmark of many earlyMirage Comics.
