  • Ebrahim College celebrates its successes with its supporters...

With over 400 people attending to celebrate some of the successes Ebrahim College (EC) enjoyed since its inception, the dinner was truly another winner. The programme included inspirational speeches from lead-ing speakers including Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad and the renowned Sheikh Salman al-Husaini al-Nadwi. With an exceptional three course meal and light entertainment, the evening saw some testimonials from its secondary school children (Ebrahim Academy) and its sixth-form. Further, children aged 5-6 years (Rashidun) performed a small role play. The programme also celebrated ECs ten recent graduates who were awarded an ijaazah (permission to transmit hadith) by Sheikh Salman al-Husaini al-Nadwi. Parents and teachers are very proud of them and pray for their future success. Ebrahim Colleges supporters including Khalid Chaudhry, Mamun Uddin and Barrister Rizwan Hussain said a few words to show their continued support. Br Rizwan opened the programme by saying, This is a very important evening not just for the students of Ebrahim College but for the staff and those who have over the many years continuously supported the work of Ebrahim College." This was followed by a brief history of Ebrahim College by Sheikh Shams Ad Duha, one of the founding trustees and currently Director of Aca-demic Development. Hafiz Muhammad Mushfique Uddin, founding trustee and currently the chief executive officer, closed the programme formerly, by thanking all the guests and their support. He said "The idea was to get people re-lated to the college and to celebrate and to appreciate what we've achieved since we started in 2003 and we couldnt be here today without the support of everybody who's here today and especially the support of our staff some who have left us and moved on but their hearts is still with the College and our first group of students." An attendee at the programme said, "Alhamdulillah, the annual dinner was very good. Comparing to others that I have been for a long time - this one was far better. Jazakallah to the brothers who organised it!"

  • British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) presents a one-day intensive course on: Monthly Quranic Seminar [MQS] In the Way of God... Tafsir Surah al-Hadid Surah al-Hadid is directed to the social rather than individual consideration. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Muslim society is that all its activities are directed to Allah. The whole society is dedicated to playing its destined part in the universal order. The task of the Muslim community is to rec-ognise Allah and to make Him recognised, and to worship Him and to make it easy for others to wor-ship. Surah al-Hadid was revealed to persuade the Muslims to make monetary sacrifices, and to make them realise that Islam did not merely consist in verbal affirmation and some outward practices but its es-sence and spirit is sincerity towards Allah and His Religion. Faith and spending are two principal ele-ments for the success of the Community in achieving its end. Good use of money in the service of belief is the practice of the people of sincere belief. The basis of accepted belief is acknowledgement of Allah, self-denial, mercy to creatures and kind-heartedness. Humility and mercy cultivate acceptance and love. Pride and severity only result in contention and fight-ing. Attend this course to strengthen and affirm your faith, action, reliance and trust in Allah [swt] in your life. Those who affirm faith in Him and pass their life fearing Allah's accountability, will be given by Allah a double share of His mercy and He will bless them with the Light by which they will see and walk the straight path among the crooked paths met with at every step in the life of this world. We should never make decisions without consulting our Creator for guidance -

the best guidance that one can seek is through the Istikharah Prayer (the Prayer of Guidance).

Please see the Salatul Istikhara section.

Marriages are made in Heaven but maintained on earth - The Prophet (SAW) said, a woman is married for four things ie her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. So you should marry the religious woman". Sahih Bukhari Hadith 7.27 Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA)

JazakAllah Khair for using our service may Allah (SWT) assist you in making

an informed decision about the most important aspect of your lives.

  • Salatul Istikharah

    Istikhara (Supplication for Seeking Guidance)

    Feeling Confused? ... Undecided?

It is natural that in our day-to-day affairs Muslims are confronted with important is-

sues requiring decision making. This is sometimes accompanied by much thinking,

anxiety and worry before one is able to decide one way or another, if at all! It is in

regard to these types of situations that the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) recom-

mended a voluntary prayer for a person to employ which will enable him/her to seek

from Allah (SWT) guidance in reaching the proper decision over a particular matter.

This is a prayer known in Arabic as Salatul Istikhara and its importance is such that

Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) used to teach his companions about it the same way he

used to teach them the verses of the Holy Qur'an. The companion Jabir (ra) said that

the Prophet (pbuh) used to strongly encourage them to practice Istikhara for all their

affairs. The manner of performing this prayer is that the person comes up with a vol-

untary prayer of two rakaats (units) at anytime during the day or night. Upon com-

pleting this prayer, the person then recites a private supplication in which is he/she

seeks the guidance of Allah (SWT). This prayer is as follows:

  • TRANSLITERATION:

Allahumma inni astakhiruka biilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa asaluka min fad-lika al-azim Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa talamu Wala alamu, Wa anta allamu l-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta talam anna hadha-l-amra Khairun li fi dini wa maashi waaqibati amri (or ajili amri waajilihi) Faqdirhu li wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li Fihi, Wa in kunta talamu anna hadha-lamra shar-run li fi dini wa maashi waaqibati amri (or fiajili amri wa ajilihi) Fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu. Waqdir li alkhaira haithu kana Thumma ardini bihi

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

O Allah, I seek Your counsel by Your knowledge and by Your power I seek strength and I ask You from Your immense favour, for verily You are able while I am not and verily You know while I do not and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know this affair - and here he mentions his need- to be good for me in relation to my religion, my life, and end, then decree and facilitate it for me, and bless me with it, and if You know this affair to be ill for me towards my religion, my life, and end, then remove me from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it be and make me satisfied with such.

"And indeed, never would he regret who asks the Creator to choose for him, and consults with the creation, and ascertains his actions."

After seeking Allah's guidance as above, the person then resumes his/her routine affairs and waits for the due response from Allah. This can appear to the person by way of the feeling you have in your heart about the matter of either confidence or further indecision. Thus, when you feel in your heart a sense of vigor, optimism or confidence about the in-tended undertaking, you may construe this as a positive response from Allah (swt) and may accordingly proceed forward with the intended undertaking. If, on the other hand, the opposite is true and your sense of doubt or worries have not cleared, then you may want to avoid the proposed undertaking as it could mean a bad outcome.

Allah (swt) says: "...It is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye may love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth and ye know not." (Qur'an 2:216)

Indeed the essence of this prayer is to test someone's trust in Allah, hence, the need to abide by the guidance of Allah whether it means pursuing or abandoning the intended undertaking. Allah also says:

"...and if anyone puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is

Allah for him. For verily Allah surely accomplishes His purpose: Verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion." (Qur'an 65:3)

  • My colleague Christina and I decided to produce a document which did justice to our childrens rights and which really identified what the Islamic religion stated over 1400 years ago in respect of their care.

Both Ashfaq and Christina had no previous experience of child protection issues and as they em-barked on their project they realized just what a mammoth task they had set themselves.

    Christina a volunteer said,

Islam acknowledges the caring role of society and the role of the state in supporting families to provide appropriate care and protection for their children. Mosques fall squarely within the field of community support organizations. Islam also affirms a child's right to:

of parents, carers and community organizations.

All of the rights compliment the current Government driven promotion of childrens rights under the banner of every child matters. Child protection is therefore everyone's business.

The launch was attended by various dignitaries including the Honorable Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Nirmal Singh and various representatives from Barnados, the NSPCC, Childrens safeguarding boards and social services.

Launch of the Child Protection Policy at Al Madina Masjid

Al Madina Masjid, Barking has re-launched its Child Protection policy after nearly 2 years of re-search and preparation.

The Masjid which is commonly referred to as Barking Masjid takes its safeguarding responsibili-ties very seriously and takes the care and protection of its children very seriously. It has entered into partnership with the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) and developed partnerships with all agencies, voluntary organizations and advocacy groups that Safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

One part of the mosques drive to promote and protect children has been the completion of a new Child Protection Policy which complements the London Child Protection Procedures and provides the foundation for delivery of safe and effective care for children.

Ashfaq Siddique, the mosque Secretary said,

Alhamdulillah, we have now been here nearly 25 years and as we have developed our teaching curriculum and as we have become more sophisticated and experienced in dealing with children we thought it was necessary to ensure our associated policies were updated and reviewed.

About 18 months ago the trustees tasked me with reviewing and updating the child protection pol-icy. However, when I began to look into it I found the policy was very basic and whilst it served a purpose I felt it did not do justice to the care of our children.

I researched the policies of other organizations, both Islamic and non Islamic and was surprised to see that most of them, too, were simple and basic.

  • The Mayor presented a framed drawing of the mosque to Shabnam Ahmed a 10 year old mosque student who won a competition for the best drawing of the mosque and who was rewarded by having the picture incorporated into the final child protection document. The award was collected by her teacher Seema Parveen who was praised for her commitment and dedication to the chil-dren at the mosque spanning many years.

Imam Asim Hussain addressed the audience explaining that all children had a right to feel safe and secure in any environment - at home, in the community or in a school, a mosque, church, synagogue, Gurdwara or any other educational establishment.

He identified that good practice minimizes the potential for abuse and increases safety for chil-dren and he highlighted the importance of developing comprehensive policies, procedures and practices to safeguard children .Most importantly he pointed out that people who work with chil-dren on a regular basis can play an important role in identifying children at risk of neglect or abuse.

Imam Asim further identified Islamic teachings in respect of the rights and care of children and gave the audience various examples of the Prophet Muhammads (pbuh) teachings in respect of and behavior towards children.

The new child protection policy advises on good practice and sets out clear guidelines relating to the protection of children. It provides procedures to implement and follow and it sets out systems which show accountability and transparency

Kellie Ann Fitzgerald who works for the Local Safeguarding Children Board and who has worked supporting statutory, faith and voluntary sector agencies achieve high standards in their work to safeguard and promote the well being of children addressed the assembled audience and com-plemented the mosque on the document which she said was the best child protection policy I have ever read.

Haji Wali Mohammed, a senior trustee who was present at the launch said, the development, re-search and completion of this policy has been complex and time consuming and it has required tenacity and commitment. We are proud that we have been able to connect the teachings of our faith with modern day statutory rights of children and to show that the religion of Islam has always respected, recognized and addressed the rights of children. Above all we have not shied away from sensitive or taboo subjects such as honor crimes or female genital mutilation. Our view is that only by being open, discussing and confronting such harmful cultural practices can we really begin to eradicate them. I hope this policy will act as a barometer for other voluntary agencies to utilize and work within. It certainly sets standards to aspire to

Haji Bashir Khan ,a senior trustee and the mosques treasurer added, As an organization the mosque has always worked closely with the local Police and the Council and we have spear-headed on behalf of all the Muslim communities of the borough, a series of projects aimed at fighting some of the challenges faced by the Muslim communities today. This is another example of our hard work and as a voluntary sector organization, the Barking mosque works independently and with partners to protect children from harm and liaises, co-operates and work with all statu-tory agencies to eradicate proven harmful cultural practices and harmful educational environ-ments. Long may that continue

Specifically in respect of children Barking mosque has

regularly updated curriculum which incorporates a wide range of topics and seeks to reward chil-dren as they progress through their learning years.

which will be recognized and accepted as a formal qualification by the Al Azar University in Cairo, Egypt.

  • The programme was officiated by Ian Robinson, a serving Police officer which child protec-

tion experience. Ian commented he was proud to have been asked to present a programme

which was about a subject close to his heart and said he was impressed by the enormous

amount of work and thought which had gone into the document.

Michael Williams from Barnados who has responsibility for ensuring staff in the region re-

ceive the level of safeguarding and protecting training required commented on the need for

religious organizations to remain vigilant against child abuse, to ensure regular quality check-

ing and to make the policy work for them rather than just gather dust on a shelf. He comple-

mented the mosque saying, this document is attractive, it invites you to read it and I can see

a great deal of thought and effort has gone into every aspect of its production. The mosque

should be proud of its achievement

Ashram Siddique explained how the document had already been implemented in the mosque

madras system and was regularly policed internally and informed the attendees that the

mosque was arranging an unannounced inspection by an outside agency to ensure compli-

ance and continued vigilance. He explained that the document had been circulated to 90 Is-

lamic establishments in London and 32 Islamic establishments outside London and explained

how the mosque had provided follow up advice to these organizations

Ashfaq explained that the policy had already exceeded expectations and reached areas

where it could never have been envisaged it would.

Three copies have been sent to 3 separate mosques in Germany and a copy to a mosque in

Norway with a further 11 copies being sent to educational establishments in Pakistan.

Ashfaq reported that the mosque was liaising with all the known Muslim groups in the bor-

ough who provide regulated education to children and was sharing the policy with them in a

drive to raise and implement standards. More importantly it was explained that the mosque

had identified 18 unregulated and unregistered providers of educational services to Muslim

children within the borough and that these were being visiting one by one and provided with

advice and guidance by sharing the policy with them and highlighting the importance of

    safety policies and processes.

It was also reported that Barking mosque as part of its welfare projects has adopted a small

    village in Gambia called Brufut.

Gambia is a former British colony whose economy relies of the sale of groundnuts, tourism

and fishing. It is consistently rated near the bottom of the United Nationss human develop-

    ment index.

  • The audience was informed that the mosque had been assisting the building of a school pro-

ject called the Brufut education trust both financially and with the administrative setup which

is required to run what will, inshAllah, be the first multi-purpose skills centre in Brufut aiming

to be a centre lead by and empowering the local community. A donation of a further 1500

was made by the Chairman of Barking mosque, Haji Mohammed Siddique to Mustafa Ndure

who manages and heads the project. Mustafa said, we are so glad to have made friends

with our brothers and sisters in Barking who have helped us so much financially and even

more importantly with the paperwork side of

    things.

Haji Siddique presented a copy of the child protec-

tion policy to Mustapha commenting this policy

has exceeded its expectations already. Mustapha

and his colleagues will now be able implement

from the outset a child protection policy to ensure

a school in a poor third world country is able to

protect its children to an excellent first world stan-

dard. My colleagues and I will continue to help

    where ever we can

Mustapha invited all the trustees of the mosque to

the opening ceremony of the school in the near

    future.

Shirley Maginley who works for the NSPCC in the

role of link Officer for Black and Minority Ethnic

Faith communities added, This document has

clear policies and procedures for everything, a

compelling piece of work and one which I am

I love my husband very much and he loves me, but I am quick-tempered and sharp-tongued (I am harsh with my husband and his family) because he is too busy to pay any attention to me, my daughter and the house altogether.

He serves the people and his family, but he does not sit with me. My question is: how can I change? I do not want to make him angry, I want to respect him. Help me. I am quick-tempered, and I want a solution that will give me relief and let me live happily with my husband and daughter. Please note that I do not feel that I am married or am a wife or the mother of a daughter and a housewife who is running a home. There is a big vacuum in my life.

    Praise be to Allah.

A common mistake is for each spouse to tell the other everything about their previous lives before marriage, on the grounds that they should not leave anything of their past lives untold to their new loves and should be completely frank and open, so their relationship will have a strong foundation with nothing to affect it.

Real life has shown this idea to be a failure, because in most cases the spouses cannot stand this. If they put up with it at the beginning when the intensity of new love prevents an immediate reaction, then when love cools down things that were hid-den begin to appear and affect their lives and make things difficult for them. Then problems begin to appear and the flames of jealousy begin to burn and the relationship begins to break down.

Whatever happened before you got married is over and belongs in the past, and no one among people should know of it no matter what his status or how close he is to you. If it was a sin and you have repented with all the conditions of repentance, it is between you and Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, because repentance is what erases whatever sins come before it, not telling the husband.

One of the conditions of repentance is regretting what has happened, giving up the sin and resolving not to go back to it. And you should also do a lot of good deeds and pray for forgiveness, to make up for what you have missed.

And the believer is enjoined to conceal himself.

  • The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Avoid these reprehensible things which Allah has forbidden, but whoever has done any of them, let him conceal himself with the con-cealment of Allah. Narrated by al-Haakim and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami (149). Al-Bukhaari (6069) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: All of my ummah will be fine except those who commit sin openly. It is part of committing sin openly for a man to do something at night then in the morning, when Allah has concealed him, he says: O So and so, I did such and such last night, when all night his Lord had concealed him, but the next day he discloses what Allah had concealed for him. What you have mentioned about your love for your husband, which is the basis for married life, is a good start and a solid foundation for solving the differences that exist between you, inshaAllah. Show your husband this love in real terms, by showing you care about him. Change your attitude to-wards him, change yourself, your appearance, your house, make a real change. Perhaps he is bored of routine and the rhythm of daily life in which there is no change. Try to attract his attention to you, your house and your daughter in all the ways that you can, but beware of complaining or showing that you are unhappy about some of his private affairs because that would be an obstacle to reaching an understanding between you. Adopt the etiquette of Islam and beware of being hot-tempered, because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) advised against getting angry. Al-Bukhaari (6116) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Advise me. He said: Do not get angry. He repeated it several times, saying: Do not get angry. We are also enjoined to guard our tongues. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said when he was advising Muaadh (may Allah be pleased with him): Restrain this, i.e., your tongue. I said: O Messenger of Allah, will we be called to account for what we say? He said: May your mother be bereft of you, O Muaadh! Will people be thrown in Hell on their faces or their noses for anything other than the harvest of their tongues? Narrated by al-Tirmidhi; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth al-Saheehah (772). What you have mentioned about your being hot-tempered and sharp-tongued are things that lead to destruction and destroy the basis of family life. Perhaps these are the reason why your husband has turned away from you. Perhaps he finds with this family and other people the respect and good manners that he does not find with you, and that has made him resort to what he is doing. aSo try to change the way you behave and control yourself. Turn to Allah and pray that you and he be guided and develop a good attitude and proper etiquette, for Allah is Ever-Near, Most Responsive. I ask Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, to bring you together and may He help us and you to do that which He loves and which pleases Him. And Allah knows best. Islam Q&A

  • The Productive Muslim

Habitator Good Habits take time to develop and Bad Habits take time to stop, this is why we developed the Produc-tiveMuslim Habitator to help you keep track of good habits (and bad habit)s and help you develop (or de-stroy) them. The concept is pretty simple: Write down up to 5 habits you want to develop (or destroy) under the relevant headings in our worksheet. We have 3 main areas of habits: 1. Spiritual Habits, e.g. Praying Tahajjud each night, fasting every Monday/Thursday, avoid being late for Salah, Praying in the Masjid.2. Physical Habits, e.g. Eating breakfast each morning, Jogging 20 minutes each morning, going to the gym.3. Social Habits, e.g. Visiting an Orphan/Widow offering help, Doing Dawah to 1 person at least per day, giving Charity, avoid getting angry/irritable. Once youve described your habits, give yourself a tick for each day that youve stuck (orabandoned) the good (or bad) habit. Each tick = 1 point. The higher the total number of points, the more likely youll con-tinue (or discontinue) with the good (bad) habit. Aim to get over 20 points each month for each habit. Ide-ally, you should aim for over 25 points! ProductiveMuslim.com is a brand that inspires young Muslims to become Productive through Islam & applying the latest productivity techniques. Join us, Discuss with us, and share with us your thoughts, let us all work together towards a Productive Ummah!

    MIDNIGHT

He sat back in his arrogant

    sort of way.

He said, Theres nothing more to say. then lectured on for another

    hour.

    She said, everything was

    fine.

She said, she didnt like to whine,

    then cried on for another

    hour.

    They sat there screaming

    through the room was silent.

They sat so still though the

    scene was violent.

    And words can never really

    help you say,

what you want them to any-

    way.

    And words can never really

    help you see,

what you really want to be.

He took a last sip of cold

    tea.

    Last chance to stop all

    these lies.

    Last chance to clean up

    these lives.

This could be the final hour.

This could be the final hour,

    or

    this could be the finest

    hour.

    And words can never really

    help you say

    what you want them to

    anyway.

    And words can never really

    help you see,

what you really want to be.

He took a last sip of cold

    tea.

    booked for a miss

    timed challenge on the

visitors right winger this set the bench mark

    for what was to come

    for the rest of the

    match, as time after

    time the APSA players

    were being spoken to

    my the match officials.

    Half-way into the first

half, APSAs fate was sealed when Matthew

Burger Frew was shown a straight red

    after a miss tackle on

    Basildon number nine

    Chris Lewis.

    The sending-off threw

    APSA off their stride,

    derful chances to open

    the scoring. In the 3rd

    minute new boy Gavin

    Major bust down the

    visitors right and

    squared the ball across

    the edge of the penalty

    box for another debutant

    Antony Lane to shoot

    wide.

    Three minutes later Ak-

    pele beat the charging

visitors keeper, Dean Neil, to a back pass, but

    lost his footing and

    pulled the ball back into

    the surprised but grate-

ful keepers hands. Minutes later captain

    John Langton was

    This was always going

to be a tough match for

    APSA- because of the

    serve weather condi-

    tions the home team had

    only played one game

    since November the

    20th, where as their op-

    ponents today were

    playing their 3th match

    in seven days. APSA

    were also giving debuts

    to four players; who had

    only meet their new

    team mates at Thursdays

    training session

    The rustiness if the

    players showed right

    from the start, when

    APSA missed two won-

    and soon keeper

    Brown and then cen-

    tre half Hind both

went into the referees book, before the visi-

    tors broke down the

    left and APSA were

    cough two on one as

    Jack Wilson Jones

    slid the ball home.

    Strangely the ten men

    APSA began to play

    better than they had

    with eleven, but never

    produce any real clear

    cut changes to trouble

    Neil in the visitors goal.

    In the second half,

    APSA again enjoyed

    the bulk of the pos-

    session, but again

    without looking like

    scoring. The visitors

    on the other hand

    made the most of all

    their chances and

    Taylor Smith scored

    twice in the last 15

    minutes to take all

    three points back to

    Essex.
