Music Education and Muslims

by: Diana Harris

ISBN: 9781858563565 Price: £18.99

Music has had an unhappy history in the lives of many Muslims. Because re-

ligion is so tightly bound up with culture it is not always clear why this should be so. Nonetheless, music is a sensitive issue for many Muslims and this has

to be understood when providing appropriate music education. Music is a compulsory part of the curriculum in the UK, so it is essential that music

teachers understand the relationship between Muslims and music.

This book looks at the history and position of music in Islam. It considers mu-

sic education in Muslim countries, and looks at music lessons in multiethnic classrooms in the UK. The recommendations about how music lessons can be

made more appropriate to Muslim pupils are based on the varied views of Muslims in the UK and Pakistan. The author suggests ways to ensure that

people are never persuaded to do anything which conflicts with their religion, while extending the opportunity for meaningful music lessons for all pupils.

This book is for all managers striving to fulfil their statutory obligations to all

pupils, and it is essential reading for music teachers in multicultural schools.

Dr Diana Harris is a researcher in music education an associate lecturer at the Open University.

... eye-opening stuff...should be read widely by par-ents, mosque officials and imams. - Fazl Rahman,

Muslim Aid Signs Cooperation Agreement

with the Largest Islamic Financial Institution

Muslim Aid Chairman (Sir Iqbal Sacranie, left) and President of the IDB H E Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali

The President of the IDB H E Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali and the Chairman of Muslim Aid in UK Sir Iqbal Sacranie, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding between

the IDB and Muslim Aid at the IDB headquarters in Jeddah.

The aim of this agreement is to facilitate cooperation between the IDB and Muslim Aid in fields of health and education, promote human development and social pro-

gress of Muslim communities worldwide and establish the necessary arrangements to

implement these goals.

Under the MoU, the IDB and Muslim Aid, according to specific procedures and regula-tions, should work together for coordinating all programs and activities agreed upon

by the two institutions.

The President of the Islamic Development Bank, H E Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali in wel-coming Muslim Aid delegation during the visit said “We have worked together on

many projects in developing countries and I am confident that this MOU will strengthen our existing relationship to pursue our common goals of fighting global poverty". He went further to stress on the importance of enhancing cooperation with

Muslim Aid inside the United Kingdom.

opment Bank's poverty alleviation programmes. This occasion is a proud moment in the 25 year his-

tory of Muslim Aid, as well as the British Mus-

lim community. We look forward

the Bank to ex-pand our ser-

vices, serve hu-manity and help countries

velopment Goals"

Reviving the Sunnah part 3

The required length of a beard. Continuing from last week, many Muslim assume that keeping a beard which is visible from forty feet is permis-

sible. This assumption and opinion is incorrect and is against the teaching of the Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم .) The

word which the Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) has used in the hadith is “thoroughly increase the length of a beard”

which means let the beard grow. Imaam Nawawi has collected all the hadith in which the lengthening of the

beard has been mentioned. All the words that have been used mean “thoroughly elongating” )Muslim).

The actions of the Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) are practical demonstrations of all the practices he expected the

believers to carry out. The following statement is evidence that Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) let his beard grow.

Once the disciple of Sayyiduna khabbaab ( asked him how the companions knew that Prophet ( عنه اهللا رضى

( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم would recite Quran in Zuhr and Asr salaah. He replied, “by observing the movement of the

blessed beard of Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) we could tell that he was making the Qir’ah )bukhari and Abu-

Dawood).

It has been mentioned that “the beard of Prophet ) صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) was dense” )Muslim) and the “Prophet ) صلى

(اهللا عليه وسلم had a very thick beard” )Shamail Tirmidhi). Hafiz Ibn- Jawzi reports from Sayyiduna Ali ( عنه اهللا

) that the Prophet رضى (( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم had a fully grown beard. All these references explain the fact that it was

a common practice for the Prophet صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) of observing the full beard.

However, it is permissible to cut the beard if it exceeds one fist length. There is no mention of this in any hadith,

but the practices of the companions indicate that it is permissible. The following is evidence for this statement:

“when Ibn- Umar performed hajj and umrah, he used to hold his beard with his clasped fist, and cut hair exceed-

ing it.” The same practice is mentioned regarding Sayyiduna Umar ) عنه اهللا ) and Abu- Hurairah ( عنه اهللا رضى

This is also the opinion of Imam sha’fee and Imam Abu- Hanifah that if the beard exceeds one fist length ( رضى

then it is desirable to shorten it to one fist length. Imam Malik says that “if the beard grows exceptionally long,

then it should be trimmed down to one fist”.

Conclusion

In short the beard is one of the greatest Sunnah of the Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم) and a symbol of a Muslim.

Imagine the scenario of the day of judgment where every person will only be worried about themselves, as Allah

describes in the Quran, “so when the deafening noise will occur, the day when one will flee from his brother, and

from his mother and father, and from his wife and sons, everyone of them will be too engaged in his own affair

to care for others” )80:30). Furthermore, on that day the only individual who will be able to help will be the

Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ,) but those who have neglected his way of life and have preferred to adopt others in

appearance over the Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) how will they expect intercession from him.

The following hadith shows us the importance of adopting and following the way of the Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه

( وسلم in every aspect of our life. Once a companion came to the Prophet ( ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم and asked “when is the

day of judgment” the Prophet ) صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ) replied “have you made any preparations for it” he said “I have

no great deeds which I can boost about, but I have love for Allah and his Prophet ( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم ”) Prophet (

( صلى اهللا عليه وسلم replied “ a person will be with who he loves” )Bukhari). It has been recorded in the books of

hadith that this was the best day for the companions after the day they had embraced Islam because the compan-

ions had immense love for the Prophet صلى اهللا عليه وسلم)

5 Steps to Make Effective Decisions

You wake up in the morning, no idea what to do for that day, open your e-mails,

check your facebook account, sleep some more, go to work/uni/school, do some-

thing to act busy, wait for the time to clock out, go home, watch TV, speak to some

people on the phone, then sleep. The example above is of a person who is not decisive. When they woke up, they

didn’t DECIDE what they had to do, they didn’t DECIDE what their plans for the

day would be, they didn’t DECIDE how to control the multiple variables that sur-

round them so that they can lead a productive life.

Decisiveness is the characteristic of a productive Muslim – because only by making

effective decisions will you be moving forward in your life. The more you linger,

and let shaytaan play with your mind, the more you’ll be slowed down and become

unproductive.

Master the art of effective decision making. The moment you lose grip of this art,

others and circumstances will make decisions for you. I know that making a deci-

sion isn’t the most easy thing to do, especially since you’ll be responsible for the

consequences of your decision. I know that it’s too comfortable not to make any de-

cision and is actually very convenient to let others decide for you (after all, you can

always blame others if things go wrong!). But is this how a Muslim should be? Is

this why Allah )Subahanahu Wa Ta’ala) created your brain, your heart, and created

logic, emotions and reason for you?

Crazy Spots I’ve Prayed

All the earth is a place of prostration,

Every field and meadow, mountain, park, city, farm plantation.

Every roadside, seaside, hillside, walkway,

Any place clean and green can be a

place to pray When I think of every path, where

I've ever trot, I laugh at all the crazy spots I

stopped to worship God. Remember that long car ride?

Driving all night so far, Under the summer moon we pulled off

to the side,

Reclining in the front seat of the car.

Waking to a fajr bird sound, And washing in the coin car wash we

found. With the water blaster making wudhu,

You sprayed me and I sprayed you.

We stood so drowsy in the dawn,

Behind the car wash dripping on the lawn.

Saturday shopping day, in a busy mall and bustling through the aisles,

Where everyone's getting in my way.

Each blank zombie we shop and

face forty smiles.

Time comes for prayer attack, Grab a pair of pants or a sweater

from the rack. Find a changing room and latch the

door, Set aside excuses and hit the floor.

As I go back to the mall, It's easier then to make sense of it

all.

All the earth is a place of prostra-tion,

Every field and meadow, mountain, park, city, farm plantation.

Every roadside, seaside, hillside,

walkway,

Any place clean and green can be a

place to pray When I think of every path, where

I've ever trot, I laugh at all the crazy spots I

stopped to worship God.

And our socks froze to the blanket,

That we spread over the snow, Your call to prayer bounced off the

trees and across the icy meadow. Crisp and clean cold air, our hearts

were so aware,
