I Remember

I remember when you brutally hurt me, I remember how you left me bruised and abused, I remember how you made me cry floods of tears, I remember how you cut my heart and let it bleed, I remember how you neglected me and watched me weep, I remember the anger and smirk on your face, I remember your deathly looking eyes, I remember how you were breaking my heart into pieces, I remember how you attacked me with so much fury and aggression, I remember how you violated me, thinking you were innocent and could get away with it, I remember those fears taking over me, I remember the sadness upon my face and within my heart, I remember the ghastly nightmares you brought in my restless sleep, I remember how you made me feel worthless and become a burden, I remember how I constantly prayed to my Lord to save me from you, I remember those frightening moments when you threw me across the dirty floor, I remember how you thought you were so much better than me, just because you were a man, I remember how you forgot to treat me like your queen, I remember how you forgot to love me unconditionally, I remember how your heart forgot to even remember me.

I remember…but do you remember? Or have you forgotten how you damaged me, Leaving me with scars and fearful memories.

Will you ever remember how you almost ruined me? But I will always remember, Only to make me stronger, That‟s why I remembered to set myself free.

Luton Delievers In Time

Last summer‟s devastating floods in Pakistan may have faded from people‟s memories, but the aftermath continues to prove just as difficult for many of its victims. As thousands continue to live in makeshift camps, staff at Luton

Council and one of London‟s major airports have continued to give hope to those still struggling since last August‟s deluge

London Luton Airport, in association with Luton Borough Council and other key community partners, collected and delivered much needed goods to the victims of last year‟s floods who were still living in difficult conditions. A se-lection of drop-off points was coordinated at schools and community centres throughout Luton for locals to drop off blankets, food items and toiletries. The items were then packaged and flown out directly by London Luton Air-port who incurred all the costs of transportation.

The project was implemented by the UK based charity Ummah Welfare Trust on 23rd January. They identified 556 families for distribution. These families were still residing in tent villages in the Nowshera district – an area which was completely submerged in last year‟s floods – and had endured freezing temperatures in the past couple of months with little, if any, shelter.

Each family received a 25kg food package containing rice, meat, pulses, sugar, and other non-food essentials such as soap. Blankets and winter aid packs were also gifted to each family. Thanks to London Luton Airport, around 2200 people benefited from this aid distribution project.

Page 49: TMS 32

“We have been very impressed by the level of support the local com-munity have shown towards the appeal and London Luton Airport are delighted to have supported such a worthwhile cause. Working with the Ummah Welfare Trust was a pleasure, helping to organise the cam-paign and give it transparency. Having such a comprehensive feed-back report on the distribution of aid has allowed us to inform our community partners of the difference their support has made to over 550 families in Pakistan.”

OUR MISSION

"And they have been com-

manded no more than to wor-

ship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in

faith); to establish regular Prayer and to practice regu-

lar charity. That is the religion pure and

straight." [Quran, 98:5]

The social welfare aspect of Islam teaches Muslims their responsibility to-

wards maintaining the well-being of their fellow brother or sister in Islam. Is-

lam has established the constitution of Zakat (alms) to safeguard the rights,

interests and needs of the poor, the weak and the constrained. Zakat is the

giving of a small percentage of one‟s surplus wealth, and is payable annu-

ally.

Until now, most Muslims living in this country have sent their Zakat money to

be distributed to good causes overseas. However, by consensus of the

scholars of Islam, Zakat should be paid locally, based on the hadith when

the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) sent Mua'dh Ibn Jabal radiallahu

anhu to Yemen, he told him: "And if they obey you in that (i.e obligation of

prayer), then inform them that Allah has ordained that they pay Zakat that is

to be taken from their rich and given to their poor." [Reported by Muslim]

There is an alarming number of Muslims who are unable to manage finan-

cially due to lack of support from the government or the Muslim community.

Additionally, an increasingly high number of Muslims are living below the

poverty line in this country, such as single parents, abandoned children, sen-

ior citizens and Muslim refugees who are in a state of „limbo‟, as they have

no right to work in this country, yet cannot claim any support from the gov-

ernment. These people survive on handouts, and unfortunately the Muslim

community have failed to respond to these crises so far.

Page 51: TMS 32

With this in mind, the National Zakat Foundation (NZF) has been estab-

lished to utilise the rich and diverse resources within the Muslim community

to respond to some of the major socio-economic issues. Focussed on

achieving self-sufficiency with a goal of empowering the poor, this fund is

seeking to work with the Muslim community to reach out to the under privi-

leged and liberate them from poverty, fear and the feeling of isolation and

empower them with safety, security, food, shelter and essential knowledge

and skills so that they may in turn help others in the future.

Just imagine, if NZF established at the time when the Bosnian Muslims were

fleeing their war-torn homeland, would they have ended up in Churches that

opened their doors to them

and gave them sanctuary?

The NZF seeks to redistrib-

ute wealth primarily in this

country, with a view to

reaching out to Muslims

who are genuinely strug-

gling to survive. The NZF

will build a model in this

country which will empower

Muslims at the lowest end

of the social spectrum, with

the aim of improving their

economic situation, stabilis-

ing their lives and becoming

self-sufficient such that they

themselves can contribute

to the Zakat Fund.

Page 52: TMS 32

HOW YOUR ZAKAT CAN HELP The National Zakat Foundation aims to target all the poor and needy including widows, orphans, the aged, the homeless, refugees, asylum seekers, and all vulnerable people needing help.

According to government statistics in this country (case studies presented are UK based) a single person needs £50 a week to provide themselves with adequate food and clothing. So for somebody like Ahmed, a donation of £50 would be a lifeline on which he would manage to take care of his food and basic require-ments.

Single mothers like Zahra are entitled to various state benefits such as

lone parent allowance: £65 / week | child benefit: £20 / week | Child tax credit: £12 / week

Zahra and baby Maryam could have been entitled to approximately £117 per week, which the government deems suitable for a lone parent to survive on.

As a lone parent, Zahra would have been entitled t approximately £65 a week wit a further of £22 for a lone parent with child allowance

Maryam the baby would have been entitled to £20 approximately weekly via child benefit and approxi-mately £12 pounds via child tax credit per week.

In total Zahra and baby Maryam could have been entitled to receive approximately £117.

This is the amount that the government deems suitable for a lone parent to survive on weekly in the UK.

For Zahra and baby Maryam a donation amount of £100 would allow them to manage their basic require-ments.

A single person aged 18 to 24 years is entitled to state benefits totalling £51.85 per week. So a £50 dona-tion would help Reeta manage her basic living expenses.

As for over 25 year olds, they are entitled to financial support totalling approximately £65.45 per week. So for sisters like Habibah, a donation to cover these basic living expenses would ease her hardship.

NB: It is important to remember that these government figures do not include accommodation expenses, such as rent and any bills.

The National Association for Asylum Seekers has set a level of support regarding the financial aid and food parcels or vouchers that people like Ahmed could be entitled to.

The food parcels or vouchers can be given out when cash payments cannot be made, the value of which is determined by the individual’s circumstances.

A single person like Ahmed would be entitled to approximately £25 of food vouchers pr week, whereas a family such as Zahra’s might be entitled to at least £35 per week, depending on the number of people in the family.

Now what...

Collectively we are all responsible for the poor and the needy, and if everybody donated a small amount of money each day, there would be enough wealth to look after the Zahra's, Ahmed's, Habibah's and Reeta's of this country.

The National Zakat Foundation seeks to help those in greatest need, such as widows, orphans, the eld-erly, the homeless, refugees and asylum seekers.

None of us knows what Allah has ordained for our future. If we were to find ourselves in similar difficulties to any of the case studies, would we not expect our community to help us in our time of need?

The wisdom of helping other during our times of ease is that, during times of hardship, others will help us. As the ummah of Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa salam, we are obligated to look after each other.

Do not underestimate how much of an impact your donation can make, regardless of whether you donate a small amount or a larger lump sum; if you donate weekly, monthly or as a one-off payment.

You can make the intention for your donation to count as sadaqa, lillah, zakat or just as a general donation.

Salah: Your FOCUS in the Age of Distraction

I was reading Leo Babauta‟s great new eBook entitled “Focus” and came across a chapter that reminded me of

Salah. The chapter talks about the importance of developing a „Focus Ritual‟ to help a person fight daily distrac-

tions and focus on their most important tasks for the day.

Think about Salah for a moment, and the power it has to fight distractions when performed properly and full con-

centration. When the athan goes off, we physically get up, leave everything we do, cleanse ourselves with a puri-

fying ritual called wudhu, walk to the nearest mosque, perform a set of pre-defined actions with full concentration

and thought, then head back home feeling completely refreshed.

This happens 5 times a day at a minimum. Have you ever thought about the effect this action has in our day to

day focus and for our spiritual productivity? Leo provides an interesting insight in the following passage:

“Mindfully observing a ritual is important, especially when it comes to focus, because often we get distracted

without realizing it. The distractions work because we‟re not paying attention. So when we pay attention to a rit-

ual, it‟s much more conducive to focus, and then to creativity.”

Islam emphasises the importance of one‟s focus on their Salah, in fact focus and concentration are linked to suc-

cess in this life and the Hereafter. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‟ala reminds us in the Qur‟aan that: “Successful in-

deed are the believers. Those who offer their Salah (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissive-

ness” [Surah Al-Mu‟minun 23: 1-2). Ibn Abbas (RadiyaAllahu-Anhu) said: „you will gain nothing from your

prayer except what you focus on‟ [Taken from Madaarij As-Salikeen].

Since Islam teaches us to develop complete focus on our submission and relationship with Allah, this focus is not

only meant for our daily prayers, but should stretch to every aspect of our life. Living a distracted life might be

„fun‟ but it‟s not productive, and to be honest, I would suggest that a distracted life is one of the tricks of Shay-

taan to keep our focus away from what is truly important in our lives.

Let‟s think practically about this now, how can we harness the power of Salah to induce focus in our lives and

fight distractions? Here are simple steps:

1. Never ever miss Fajr salaat This beautiful and uplifting Fajr prayer is perhaps your most powerful focus ritual and act of ibadah for the whole

day. When you start your day with Fajr salah, you allow your mind to rest and focus on the most important aspect

of your life first and that is worship of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta‟ala), then the most important elements of your

life. Never ever miss this beautiful prayer.

2. REFOCUS with Salah If during the day, you feel completely overwhelmed with all sorts of distractions and can‟t seem to get moving on

important tasks and to-do items here‟s how you can REFOCUS: get up, make wudhu, and pray 2 rak‟ah (your

intention should be Duha prayer if performed before the sun reaches its zenith, or nafl if at another time) with full

concentration asking Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta‟ala) for help and support. This simple technique is not only re-

warding, but also extremely powerful for us as Muslims. It‟s almost like pressing the “RESET” button in your

brain when your mentally overwhelmed.

3. Pray night prayer and witr before you sleep Normally at the end of each day, I like to spend at least 30 minutes disconnected from the rest of the world.

There‟s no better way to spend it disconnected, than spending it in night prayer and witr. After praying the night

prayer, spend 5-10 minutes thinking about what you‟ll focus on tomorrow. Conversely, you can get up in the

middle of the night to pray tahajjud prayer and get an extra early (and productive) start to your day.

Above we‟ve discussed the ways to refocus, assuming that you‟ve no problem focusing in salah, however if

you‟re distracted in salah, here‟s a great resource, „33 Ways of Developing Khushoo in Salah„ to help put you on

the path to full concentration (khushoo) insha‟Allah

Remember, for a Muslim, the key to success in this life and Hereafter is truly dependent on being able to fully

concentrate and FOCUS in salah, and give our undivided attention to our Creator – Allah (Subhanahu Wa

Ta‟ala).

O you who believe! Eat not up your property amongst yourselves in vanities: but let there be amongst you traffic and trade by

mutual good-will: nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah has been to you Most Merciful. [Al Qur‟an 4:29]

HMC was born essentially out of one concern and one concern only;

to be able to provide assurance that we are eating genuine Halal, not just “because it says Halal… it must be Halal!"

HMC is the product of a particular, prolonged situation – a situation of deceit

and treachery. Muslims are being betrayed by individuals & corporations whose only concern is making fast, easy money. Using 'blessed blades', pre

recorded Bismillah, captive bolts, electrified water and even pork proteins; the hard-earned Halal cash of many is being used to buy Haram. HMC has

therefore, shouldered the enormous responsibility of discharging an obliga-tory duty on behalf of you, the community at large. Help HMC to Help You!

CUP FINALS

Collar bone will hinder the boys,

but with plenty of good quality play-ers in the Squad Manager Anjum Khan is still very

optimistic.

APSA went away to Newbury Forest

to secure a 0-2 semi final victory

in the League Cup. A tough game with a goal either side of half time to se-cure a position in

the final.

Goals came from Imran Khan and

against them, APSA are hopeful of a clean sweep and

picking up three ti-tles in their first season. Brings

back memories of the 2000 team who joined the Essex Business Houses

league and took all the spoils in their

first year.

This side looks much stronger and has the capability to make it happen. Sadly the loss of star performer
