Welcome tothe village directory

February Issue Deadline 5th Jan 2013

Hi everyone, Welcome to the December issue and the end of an unpredictable year. I can’t begin to tell you just how much I’m looking forward to the Christmas break. With deadlines every month it’s not easy fi tting a holiday in, and in the past when I have managed to take a holiday my laptop has been an essential part of my luggage. By the time I get to the end of the year my grey matter is most certainly in need of a well deserved rest. Which is one reason why I don’t publish in January, this is my time to catch and attempt to start the new year with a clean slate - at least that’s the resolution I never quite manage to fulfi ll.

This is my favourite time of the year, I love Christmas. Even if we don’t manage to get away for a few days, to be able to relax and enjoy all the festive activities as well as

catching up with family and friends, without giving work a second thought is my idea of heaven. Add to that Christmas pud, mulled wine, chocolate and silly party games and I’m in my element!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, eat, drink and be merry, I’ll be ready with the hangover cures, local exercise classes and dieting options in the new year!

Merry Christmas ~ Debbie

It’s mid December and your newly-bought Christmas tree is standing naked in the corner of your living room. So it’s to the loft, garage or shed to dig out that battered old box of decorations.

If your box is anything like mine, you’ll probably fi nd a past-its-best fairy with drooping wings, some purple and silver baubles from the Millennium and two crushed crackers from last year’s Christmas lunch (couldn’t bear to throw them away) tangled together with swathes of tinsel, garlands, non-functioning fairy lights and springs of plastic holly.

Most of my hoard is cheap, garish and ultimately disposable. But there’s one very special part of the collection that I will never throw away. It’s a treasured set of old-style, hand painted tree decorations, made out of wafer thin glass.

A Very Vintage Christmas

Vintage tree ornaments are an evocative sight for those of us who were children in the 1950s and 60s: each year when I unwrap my collection it takes me back to a time when Christmas seemed truly magical and exciting. Although I understand the reasons why hanging delicate glass baubles on the Christmas tree – within grabbing distance of little hands - is no longer a good idea, it’s sad to think that such beautiful items are no longer readily available.

Page 7: TN26 Dec 2012

the gardenThe tradition of making glass tree decorations dates back to 17th century Bohemia (the modern day Czech Republic) and Germany. Today’s familiar ball shapes had their origins at a place called Lauscha in Germany, where legend has it they were fi rst created when glass blowers competed to see who could blow the largest sphere before the molten glass popped.

Those that survived were kept by the glassmakers’ wives, swirled with silver nitrate and sold at local markets as magic talismans, off ering protection and blessing during the holy season.

In 1848 a picture of the young Queen Victoria’s Christmas tree, hung with decorations brought from her husband Prince Albert’s native Germany, was published in the Illustrated London News. This sparked a copycat craze throughout Europe and soon whole families in the town of Lauscha were employed to mass-produce decorations – the menfolk blowing the glass and the women and children painting and fi nishing the ornaments.

Later that century, German immigrants brought the same passion for glass decorations to America. Thanks to entrepreneur Frank Woolworth - who bought millions for his popular chain stores - what began as a cottage industry in Lauscha became an international phenomenon.

By the mid-20th century new molding techniques had sped up mass production and reduced the cost of manufacture. In addition to the more conventional round and oval shapes, there were decorations shaped like musical instruments, stars, lanterns, mushrooms, snowfl akes, snowy cottages and little fi gures of Santa Claus. My favourite ones were the exotic birds with silky fi bre glass tails that clipped onto your tree and trembled like real birds every time the branches moved.

Nowadays most Christmas tree ornaments are made out of plastic, but if you do happen to fi nd a Lauschan treasure lurking at the bottom of your decorations box, take good care of it. Vintage tree ornaments are becoming highly collectable and you can fi nd sets on Ebay and other online auction sites for between £15 and £30.

I learnt to crochet when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I was taught by an elderly neighbour one glorious, long-ago summer. We used to sit together on her swinging garden seat under a beautiful, scented white rose intertwined with honeysuckle. She patiently taught me the intricacies of winding the wool around the hook and pulling it through to create the stitches. We crocheted squares in a multitude of colours with her left-over scraps of real wool.

As the years have gone by, crochet has been something I’ve dipped in and out of. A shawl made whilst I was a student nurse in quiet moments on night duty, pram blankets for the babies and dolls blankets for my daughter. I even crocheted a tiny shawl with sewing cotton and a fi shing bait hook to drape across the bed in the doll’s house, as though its wearer had just tossed it aside and moved out of sight.

Recently however, I have begun to experiment more. The beauty of crochet is that, basically, you work with only one stitch: if you drop it, it is not the disaster that it is in knitting because it is instantly picked up again and, if you don’t like what you’ve done, it is so very easy to just undo it and try it again another way. I have also learnt more about how to follow patterns – again, there is an advantage over knitting because crochet patterns are often given in both written and chart form. If you can’t understand one, you can usually work out the meaning from the other.

I have an older friend who has spent many hours knitting the most beautiful jumpers and cardigans. The downside is that all the long hours of concentration have resulted in severe arthritis in her neck. I asked her if she had ever tried crochet and she replied that she hadn’t

because she had no desire to wear the end result. I introduced her to crocheting fl owers and she was hooked (!!!)

Now she has resumed her knitting in small doses just so that she can make tea cosies on which to arrange her crocheted fl owers!

Mini Christmas Cakes

Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper.

Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fl uff y. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the fl our and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until fi rm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin.

When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.

Choose a themeRather than assembling any old cacophony of decorations, choosing a theme brings unity to the overall look. It should suit the style of your house and the way your family celebrates the festive season, whether laid-back and relaxed, sophisticated or formal. For some, that might mean a traditional, living fi r tree and a colour theme of red, green and gold. For others, a kitsch fake tree with fl uorescent ornaments; or perhaps a minimal, modern style with pure silver and glass. A Scandinavian theme would involve simple decorations in red and white, while a colourful, contemporary theme would be based around one or two bright colours.

Dress the treeStart by winding it with lights – making sure they’re evenly distributed by occasionally switching them on and standing back for an overall impression. Use a small stepladder if necessary to reach the top. Next, drape your garlands, again aiming for evenness and an impression of generosity without overloading the tree. On small or slim trees, use slender garlands; on larger trees you can aff ord to go for heavier, fancier garlands. Last, hang your ornaments, with the largest fi rst, fi lling in around them with smaller ones. Don’t hang all the ornaments on the tips of branches – placing some nearer the trunk creates a sense of depth and interest.

Hang a wreath For some, the making of a family wreath using foraged leaves, fl owers, seeds, nuts and

fruit is a signifi cant part of the holiday season; for others, creating a decorative wreath off ers the chance to experiment with exciting new materials, from tinsel to feathers, pearls to buttons. Alternatively, ready-made examples are available in any style imaginable, from classic to contemporary, heart-shaped or circular, small or large, utterly simple or lavish and complex. Whatever its style, a Christmas wreath always provides a wonderful sense of festive welcome.

Make some decorationsHome-made Christmas decorations can be as elaborate or simple as you wish, be they charmingly childish or ultra-sophisticated. Multi-coloured paper chains are the ultimate in family favourites, as are cutwork paper stars and clove-studded oranges. How about pom pom snowmen, peg-doll angels or glitter-covered pine cones? Or mini stocking shapes cut out of felt and ginger biscuits to hang from the tree? It’s all great fun and will create happy memories for years to come.

Wrap your presentsTransform present-wrapping from a chore to a pleasure by taking a little extra time and trouble. When they’re piled under the tree they will look so much better if they’re colour-coordinated and criss-crossed with ribbons and bows. Inexpensive paper – even brown paper or newsprint – looks lovely if adorned with a home-made label, while sequins, feathers, glitter, stamped designs and wired

Grand Designs in your HomeWhether you have a large or small home, in the town or country, with a little careful thought and planning you could transform your kitchen into a Grand Design that Kevin McCloud would be impressed with.

Small enough to care

There were many kitchens on display at the Grand Designs Show, Olympia, but one of the most visited and admired was this striking Art Deco style kitchen, designed and hand crafted by Thoroughly Wood, a family run furniture company based in Lyminge, Kent.

With smaller kitchen companies you can usually end up with a much higher quality result, more personal attention – and in this case, a Grand Design at a far lower cost than you would expect!

Visitors were struck with the handmade units of solid maple with black walnut bead and inlay, including a dresser and an exquisite island unit. Perhaps the most coveted feature was the unusual walk-in pantry with bow fronted doors of solid black walnut with maple bead. This is an excellent space saving masterpiece, complete with useful racking, pull-out wine storage and even handmade handles.

beads can all provide additional allure. For a frivolous fi nishing touch add a tiny pine cone, iced biscuit or small bauble.

Sort out your cardsAn abundance of cards can soon appear to cover every available surface, so it pays to establish a system as soon as they start arriving. The most straightforward option is to clear a shelf or two, and arrange them close together, large at the back and small at the front, in neat rows. Smaller cards can be tucked around a mirror or picture frame. An alternative is to staple them to ribbons (weighted by a bauble or pine cone) to hang in rows from a mantelpiece or along the side of

Looking after your treeBuy a tree that’s as fresh as possible; bright green and, ideally, displayed in water, out of direct sunlight. As soon as possible, cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, to help the tree absorb water. Trim away low-down or interior branches that you don’t need. Put the tree in a stand that can hold plenty of water, and never let it run out. Try not to stand the tree in a sunny window or near a radiator. If you wish, you could add a couple of cups of corn syrup to the water to provide the tree with extra nourishment.

the staircase.

Create displaysNothing says Christmas like poinsettias in pots, scented candles on the mantelpiece and ivy, holly and mistletoe draped over every available surface. Bowls of clementines or nuts are both ornamental as well as edible, while baubles or fairy lights (the latter placed near a handy socket) can also be bundled into a glass bowl or vase for a glittery eff ect. Now’s the time to dig out that special table runner and your best crockery, glassware and cutlery for an eye-catching table display, fi nished off with a dish, tray or platter fi lled with greenery, candles and other festive decorations.

At CutMotoringCosts.com we are fed up with the ever-increasing cost of fuel! As is everybody else for that matter!

But more to the point why is the price of fuel in Kent some of the most expensive within the whole of the UK?

The price of fuel is on its way back up, with some fuel stations in Kent close to £1.40 a litre – with more increases in the pipeline. Not only are prices high, they can change dramatically within your town even within the space of a couple of streets. This shouldn’t be the case!!

Given that petrol is pretty much the same quality wherever we fi ll up, how can the price vary so much locally, regionally or nationally, and even by brand?

Petrol fi rms claim that such diff erences refl ect market forces. Petrol is likely to be more expensive where competition is weaker, and cheaper where there’s more choice. That, they

say, is why petrol is so much more expensive in isolated rural communities.

However, even though the vast bulk of the cost is tax (fuel duty), prices are still unfairly high in places even where competition is supposedly strong.

Petrol isn’t a luxury item; it is a commodity and essential in modern life to be able to function on a daily basis.

We want the government to investigate and answer, as to why the petrol companies are making varied and unreasonable profi ts from the people of Kent.

We will be out in force with our familiar campaign mascot ‘Percy Pump’ collecting signatures in order to take our petition to parliament. We want answers and urge you to support our campaign – ‘Fair Fuel For Kent.’

Railway ComplaintThe following is an actual exchange of correspondence between a customer and the Irish Railway Company.

Gentlemen,I have been riding your trains daily for the last two years, and the service on your line seems to be getting worse every day. I am tired of standing in the aisle all the time on a 14-mile trip. I think the transportation system is worse than that enjoyed by people 2,000 years ago.Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan

Dear Mr. Finnegan,We received your letter with reference to the shortcomings of our service and believe you are somewhat confused in your history. The only mode of transportation 2,000 years ago was by foot.Sincerely, Irish Railway Company

Gentlemen,I am in receipt of your letter, and I think you are the ones who are confused in your history. If you will refer to the Bible and the Book of David, 9th Chapter, you will fi nd that Balaam rode to town on his ass. That.... Gentlemen, is something I have not been able to do on your train in the last two years!Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan.

LIONS CLUB CHRISTMAS FLOAT IS COMING TO YOU

The much loved Tenterden Lions Club Father Christmas Float will be visiting many areas in and around Tenterden in December. For about forty years the fl oat has been touring the streets to raise money for Charity. Last year, despite straightened times, we raised over £6000 and all of it was given to local, national and international charities. Look out for us outside the old Tenterden Library at late night shopping evening on 7th December when we will be collecting for the Tenterden Day Centre. We will also be collecting for the Day Centre outside Tesco’s on 14th & 15th December. Many residents, particularly the children, look out for the Float and say that it is a sign that Christmas is on the way! Christmas lights, carols and jollity from Father Christmas with his helpers dressed in capes and top hats all make up a really fun and atmospheric time and it is great to see groups of happy, smiling children with wondrous eyes waiting for us to come round the corner and cheer them on their way. It is gratifying to collect so much, especially when people have saved their coins for months in anticipation of giving it to the fl oat. So, the Tenterden Lions Club wish all the local residents a very happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in your area. Thanks you all so much for the support you have given us in the past. Below is a list of where we plan to visit you.

I have a little SatnavIt sits there in my carA Satnav is a driver’s friendIt tells you where you are

I have a little SatnavI’ve had it all my lifeIt’s better than the normal onesMy Satnav is my wife

It gives me full instructionsEspecially how to drive“It’s thirty miles an hour”, it says“You’re doing thirty fi ve”

It tells me when to stop and startAnd when to use the brakeAnd tells me that it’s never everSafe to overtake

It tells me when a light is redAnd when it goes to greenIt seems to know instinctivelyJust when to intervene

It lists the vehicles just in frontAnd all those to the rearAnd taking this into accountIt specifi es my gear.

I’m sure no other driverHas so helpful a deviceFor when we leave and lock the carIt still gives its advice

It fi lls me up with counsellingEach journey’s pretty fraughtSo why don’t I exchange itAnd get a quieter sort?Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,Makes sure I’m properly fed,It washes all my shirts and thingsAnd - keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantagesAnd my tendency to scoff ,I do wish that once in a whileI could turn it off .
