ThE ART of CREATiVE NETwoRkiNG ‘’Creative breakthroughs and great innovations don’t simply emanate from the minds of individual geniuses; they are born from intelligent networks’’. Richard ogle, author of Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity and the New Science of Ideas

Research and education networks have evolved over the years to provide innovative services across society and serve diverse scientific disciplines. Furthermore our communities are not only running the network to support science, the arts and humanities now, but they also have to be creative in the way technologies are deployed to allow adaptability. Technical innovation can often move faster than society, but constant changes and human demand provide opportunities for even more visionary solutions.

TNC17 will address creativity across many different themes including uses of cloud technology, big data, moving beyond traditional networking and the impact of innovation on life. We will look at ways in which creative solutions have been found to practical needs as well as the many ways in which technology has advanced our enjoyment and understanding of the world we live in.

The conference programme has four parallel session tracks and daily plenary sessions in which prominent experts deliver keynote presentations. The conference sessions will be streamed live and will be archived for future reference.

GÉANT is Europe’s leading collaboration on e-infrastructure and services for research

and education. Through national research and education networks (NREN) the GÉANT

network connects more than 50 million users across 40 countries and allows them to

collaborate with their peers in over 100 countries worldwide. GÉANT is co-funded by

Europe’s NRENs and the European Union through the GÉANT Project, which delivers

value and benefit to society by enabling research communities across Europe and

the world to collaborate on groundbreaking research. The GÉANT Project is run by

the GÉANT organisation on behalf of its membership and partnership community.

Presentations about the GÉANT network and other elements of the GÉANT Project are

included in the appropriate parallel sessions throughout the conference programme.

storytelling with dataStories stick with your audience in ways that data alone does not. Why wouldn’t you leverage the power of a story when communicating with data? Join this engaging session, during which Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic discusses the untapped potential of combining the magic of stories with best practices in data visualisation for communicating effectively with data.

Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic tells stories with data. She is the author of “Storytelling

with data: a data visualization guide for business professionals” and writes the

popular blog www.storytellingwithdata.com. Cole’s unique talent was honed over

the past decade through analytical roles in banking, private equity, and on Google’s

People Analytics team. Her well-regarded workshops and presentations are highly

sought after by data-minded individuals, companies, and philanthropic organisations

all over the world.

The End of the Traditional Router? For a decade, SDN concepts have challenged the status quo of router-technology but yet have failed to completely replace it. ‘’The iP/mPlS router is here to stay’’ says hannes Gredler. in this talk Gredler will discuss both the working and non-working parts of contemporary router designs and offer alternative solutions for discussion.

Publishing data: rapid communication and creditOpenly sharing data has become a requirement upon publication in most high-quality journals. Additionally, sharing data improves scientific and speeds discovery. In this talk, Laurie Goodman will present new directions in publishing where the data itself can be published and, thus, cited. She will also touch on the current extreme need for large databases with solid infrastructure.

Laurie goodman is the Editor-in-Chief of the international open-access open-

data journal GigaScience (co-published by BGI and BioMed Central), which has a

novel publication platform with article publication linked to a database that hosts all

affiliated data.

Goodman has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Stanford University and

holds a Phd from the University of Chicago. She published a novel, A Spell of Deceit

with del Rey Books and did her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado,

Boulder. After working as assistant Editor at Nature Genetics she moved to Cold Spring

Harbor Laboratory Press in 1997 to serve as the Executive Editor of Genome Research

and managing Editor of Learning & Memory.

In 2006, she started her own company, Goodman Writing & Editing, which provides

manuscript editing services and manuscript writing seminars.

Living labs and creativityCan the Internet become a new art form? The kinematograph was invented as a motion picture film machine in 1890. Only after decades of synthesizing different crafts and expertise did it become an art. Can the Internet follow the same track? Artur Serra i Hurtado takes us on a journey towards generating new art forms from a global network of creative labs.

Artur serra i hurtado has been the Deputy Director of the i2cat Foundation

in Catalonia, Spain, since its creation in 2003. i2cat was one of the first European

programmes on the future internet. Also an anthropologist Artur’s work focused

very early on the convergence of culture and internet with projects like opera oberta,

Dancing Q, and many others developed in collaboration with Liceu de Barcelona,

RedIris,GéANT, Internet2, Cinegrid, KAIST, CANARIE, the RNP from Brazil and other

institutions globally. He is the precursor of the EU-funded sPeCiFi project, dedicated

to build the “European Creative Ring” and which was presented in November 2016 at

the Smart City world Expo in Barcelona.

dr. Serra is also a founding member of the European Network of living labs. he is

passionate about organising public-private-citizen partnerships fostering people-

driven innovation around the world.
