Girls Football camp and trip to Manipur 13-18, Feb. 2014

Following a meeting between Mr. Bikram Singh, Adidas Asian Grass root Football Coordinator, and Mr. Kalsang Dhondup, TNSA Executive Chairman, a Tibetan Girls team was agreed to send to Manipur in the beginning of 2014. The Chairman discussed the matter with Ms. Cassie, TNSA Coordinator of the girl's football program, and decided to go as planned. Both the Chairman and Cassie met and briefed Mrs. Sonam D. Samkhar, Education Director of TCVs, of the plan. The proposal was approved and together members started working on the project. Cassie had arranged a volunteer Coach from New Zealand who could give his time and support to the team for more than a month.

At the end of the 2013, thirty five girls from all eight TCV schools, STS Chauntra and TNMF School Clement Town were selected by Cassie and the Tibetan club coaches and twenty one girls reported for the camp.

Initially sixteen players were supposed to visit Manipur after the one month camp, however, Shane Kidby (Coach) decided to take all twenty one girls to Manipur and his family generously sponsored the fare for the air tickets for the remaining five girls to attend.

At the selection camp in Chauntra training went on for a month under the supervision of the Coach Shane Kidby, Cassie, Ngawang Namdul (TNSA staff member) and a home staff member, Ms Pema Dolkar.

On 13th February 2014 the team was greeted by the Lions Club Leimarol members at the Imphal airport in Manipur and they drove straight to the football field where a grand reception function awaited them.

Three separate organizations; Lions Club Leinarol, Th. Birchandra Singh Football Academy [TBSFA] and Coerver Coaching India, organized the 1st Ladies Spring Soccer Festival 2014. The organizers had arranged a special reception function at the Th. Birchandra Singh Football Academy football ground, Mr. Clay Khongsai Inspector General of Police Imphal was the chief guest attending.

Mr Khongsau addressed the gathering by praising His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan people. TNSA Chairman also thanked all the people who were involved in the program.

On the 14th February the first match was between the Tibetan team and TBFSA main team. Their team consisted of two current Indian national players, two former Indian national players and three or four state

players. TBFSA played a better game in every department. They won by 7-0. It was a challenge for our girls.

The Tibetan team played the second game on 15th with Manipur Veteran Women's team and our girls played much better that day, winning 4-2. Jamyang Choetso scored all four goals and was awarded 'player of the match'. Marie Kalden was awarded 'best mid-fielder'.

In the evening a cultural exchange program was held at the Imphal Hotel and our girls performed three traditional items. There were around two hundred selected guests and Mr. Ngawang Namdul gave a speech on Tibetan history and the current situation in and outside of Tibet. Cassie also highlighted TNSA's work and its current and upcoming programs.

The third match was played on 16th with the Maniwood Women's Team. This match was well publicized and there were huge crowds of spectators to witness the match. The game ended in draw with a score of 2-2. Our goalkeeper Tenzin Dekyong saved a penalty kick and also saved some challenging goals that game, she was awarded 'player of the match'. The organizer declared the Tibetan women's team as winner of the tournament. Their local papers have covered all events of the tournament in detail.

The team left Imphal on the 18th February by plane to Delhi. We presented organizers and sponsors COPA footballs with signatures of all the members of the team and staffs. At a later date TNSA sent souvenir books by His Holiness the Dalai Lama titled 'Beyond Religion' to all the people who had helped to make the trip possible.

Tuberculosis (TB) has been, and continues to be, a disease of a major public health threat in the Tibetan community. It is one of the most common infectious diseases prevalent in the Tibetan diasporas community.

The Department of Health (DoH) CTA, in collaboration with the Delek Hospital and TNSA organized a "Run for TB" marathon in commemoration of World TB Day 2014. The main objective of this event was to generate widespread public awareness on the importance of knowing about Tuberculosis and for people to make

informed decisions to prevent oneself and the community from contracting and spreading this deadly infectious disease.

Upper TCV School, Lower TCV School and TCV School Gopalpur, alongside many local Tibetans from Dharamshala took part in the race, few foreigners also participated.

A brief opening ceremony was held at Mcleod TCV Day-School with an introductory speech by Mrs. Thinley Choedon, Health Department Coordinator, followed by the Health Kalon, Mr. Tsering Wangchuk.

The Health Department gave t-shirts to all the participants and officials. The race was flagged by Health Kalon from Dolma Chowk. Prizes were given to winners of male and female categories; first to third, youngest boy and girl and oldest male and female. The race was funded by PRM USA through DOH, CTA and TNSA also contributed a sum of 10,000 INR

TNSA had officially sent a letter on 25th November 2013 to Dhondupling Tibetan Colony for hosting the 20th GCMGC Football Tournament in their settlement. With the approval of their president H E Khochhen Rinpoche, they formed the GCMGC organizing committee under the chairmanship of Mr. Gompo Tsering acting President of Dhondupling Tibetan Settlement.

Deadline for the team's registration was fixed for 15th April 2014 and twenty seven clubs successfully registered before the above date.

The ground extension work started right after the approval from the President and they spent almost fifteen lakhs on renovation of Dhondupling's school ground. They sought out TNSA's monetary support for the ground renovation project. Dhondupling Tibetan Settlement and the last three south Indian venues were supported by TNSA and sanctioned one lakh rupees each for ground renovation projects.

TNSA team reached Dhondupling Tibetan colony on 26th May and held a series of meetings with the local organizing committee, Indian officials, VTC mess in-charge and other concerned people.

As scheduled, on 4th June the opening ceremony proceeded as usual. The chief guest was H E Minling Khanchen Rinpoche of Mindroling Monastery and the guest of honor Mr. Aggraval, Sports Minister of Uttrankhant Govt, however due to his schedule in Delhi he could not attend, therefore, Dhongsey Jana, son of Jamyang Khantse Rinpoche attended. Around sixty other formal guests were also invited.

The chief guest announced that 2014 GCMGC football tournament was dedicated to the year of His Holiness the Dalai Lama as previously declared by CTA.

The opening match was played between last years champions, Dhondupling FC against Lingstang Manduwala FC. From 5th to 9th June there were three matches. All the first matches started at 1:30 pm and despite the scorching heat of the Dehradun summer, all the seeded teams reached knock out stages. In total twenty eight matches were played.
