Hooked on the idea of visualising dog smells, a programmer startsto see smells when he stops treating his dog as a test subject.

SynopsisAfter his company goes bankrupt in New York, Bryan (45), aprogrammer, becomes obsessed by the idea of visualizing smellsbased on signals sent by a dog’s brain. He promises his son thathe will create an app allowing the user to delve into a canineworld of smells. Human and canine POV scenes interchange.

The programmer pitches his idea to a Virtual Reality HeadsetCompany, claiming that because a dog’s vision is limited to thecolors blue and yellow, other colors could be used forrepresenting scents. The Company rejects his idea as unrealisticeven though the dog's POV or point of smell generates impressivevisuals. Bryan finds employment in an Istanbul-based CanalBuilding Company creating apps for drones. The second Bosphoruswill make Istanbul an island. His colleague Deniz (35) flirtswith the divorced American but fails to elicit a reaction.

Bryan adopts a stray dog, Kurt, and asks a vet to implant brainsensors and a microchip into the dog’s brains. Bryan and the dogdo not get along. He treats the dog like a test subject. Thedog’s brain sensors only emit chaotic and unclear signals. Bryanpurposely allows stray dogs to attack Kurt in order to understandhis brain signals better. Deniz stops him and accuses him ofbeing heartless.

Disappointed, Bryan stops conducting his experiments and leavesfor the Black Sea coast with Kurt. Man and dog spend days withoutany computer or conducting any experiments and the two form abond. Bryan finds a friend in Kurt. Deniz visits the pair andsleeps with Bryan in the tent. She concludes that the dog andBryan have both recovered mentally.Bryan discovers that Kurt’s brain signals have become clean andclear. He sends the first smell signal to his son and asks him toassign a color and form to it. The programmer concludes that theneurons in Kurt’s brain have created a Pavlovian reflex inBryan’s human brain – conditioning a reflex to be empathic. Onlynow did the canine brain signals reveal themselves.

However, there is no time to rejoice in his success becausethe Islamic State and Turkish agents intervene and try tokidnap Kurt because of his microchip. The secret agent Denizstored compromising information about the enemies of the Canalon the microchip. The human-canine duo escapes and hides inthe area of the canal building. Terrorists shoot and injurethe dog. Bryan shields Kurt with his body when a grenadeexplodes. He suffers a contusion and loses his sight.

Deniz visits Bryan in the hospital and tries to explain whyshe exploited both him and the dog. The doctor promises toreturn Bryan’s sight and implants temporary blind sensorsconnected to a camera. Bryan links the sensors to Kurt’simplants.

An otherworldly, impressionistic vision of the Earth revealsitself in blue and yellow. Static objects are blurred andeverything in motion appears in contrast. Everything emanatesa colored scent and is dispersed by a colorful wind. The blindBryan starts to run. His eyes and nose run faithfullyalongside him.

Bryan, his son and Kurt visit a Disney theme park where peoplesee what their pets smell through VR headsets.

Bryan tells his son that he and Kurt now have a new jobdiagnosing cancer flawlessly.

Several canine-human duos with VR glasses run by in NYCCentral Park. Kurt trots behind Deniz.

EXT. NYC CENTRAL PARK - MORNING.

Dogs and their owns run by in the park.

Bryan (45) has an eagle nose with a moustache and iswearing a large old-fashioned suit. He pulls apoodle’s leash closer to the bench. The poodle plantsits feet down on the ground trying to resist but getspulled over by force.

Bryan sits on the bench, puts the computer helmet onand taps the egg-shaped keyboard. The poodle turnsaround itself trying to get the device mounted on hisneck off.

Bryan releases the leash. The dog runs away.

BRYANSit. Bad dog.

The dog stops and looks back.

EXT. ALIEN WORLD - MORNING. DOG’S POV.

Bi-colored canine vision creates a blue and yellowworld with blue grass and leaves and a yellow sun.Smells are represented by the remaining colors.

All objects emanate scents and are surrounded by agreen and orange fog. A colourful wind blows from theright and mixes in with the other colors, turninginto small circular clouds of colored smells.

The dog hears the sharp high sounds of insects in thegrass. The sound of a dog barking hits strongly.

Static objects such as tree trunks are blurred, while the swinging branches stand out incontrast.

The sight is reminiscent of an impressionistpainting:http://www.theartstory.org/images20/works/impressionism_2.jpg?1

A bunch of orange bubbles pulsates over the surfaceof the bench. A human shape in a large suit emerges. The armpits, mouth, hips and feet produce the mostcolors. The human figure approaches with an extendedhand. The poodle’s growling changes to barking. Thedog bites into Bryan’s trousers.

A passer-by is talking to someone on the phone. Hisdog joins the fighting poodle and barks at Bryan. Bythis time, three dogs have surrounded Bryan and arebarking at him. Bryan dances around trying toprotect himself from the dogs. The trousers rip andthe poodle tears out a piece of Bryan’s trouser leg.

A police car with blue and yellow lights stops toassess the situation. The officers step out of thecar and shoo the dogs away, leading Bryan away withhis dog.

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSET COMPANY - DAY.

A suited clerk with shiny hair (40) points to aphoto in a newspaper in which the police is walkingBryan away from Central Park. The open-mouthed poodle is in the next photo.

CLERK(standing,

threatening voice) Haveyou seen this?

Bryan sinks into the chair and presses the egg-shaped keyboard.

BRYANDon’t pay any attention to that.

CLERK(raised voice)

You are forbidden to workwith animals. And ourcorporation has been accusedof conducting unethicalexperiments with pets.

Bryan lifts his spectacles up to his forehead, putsthe egg-keyboard into his pocket and straightens hisback.

BRYANYou mentioned having a Germanshepherd when you were achild. Do you know how manycolors dogs can see?

CLERK(sits)

I already know from your project.

Bryan stands up with his hair dishevelled.

BRYAN(slowly punctuating his words)

Think about it, nature pointsstraight to the solution: adog's vision consists of thecolors blue and yellow. Theother colors can be used forvisualising scents from adog’s brain signals.

CLERKOriginal idea. But noone understands brainsignals.

BRYAN

If smells were assigned acolor, perhaps the worldwould look a lot like thispicture?

Bryan nods his head in the direction of theimpressionist Manet poster on the wall.

CLERKYou’d never want to leave aplace like that. Your idea hascaptured my imagination.Unfortunately, you create theillusion of a success story. But the decision has alreadybeen made. Our Corporationwill not finance the project.

The clerk hands Bryan a paper file and opensthe door. Bryan hobbles out, hunched over.

EXT. DISNEY PANDORA AVATAR PARK - DAY.

Bryan meets his son (7) as he climbs out of hismother’s car. A man sits alongside the mother. Fatherand son embrace and enter the park.

SONYou’re going to dig achannel? Mom said to give youthis.

The boy gives his father a toy shovel.

Bryan raises his eyebrows. He grins and startspretending that he is digging away with the shovel.

The father gives the VR headset to his son andputs a VR helmet on himself.

BRYANSee the globe hologram? TheBosphorus canal separates Europefrom Asia. I will create appsfor drones that will protect theBosphorus and the future Canalof Istanbul.

SON(snivels)

I don’t need any canal. Youpromised to transport me intothe world of dog smells. Andnow you’re leaving. You don’tlove me.

Bryan points to a dog tied to the park entrance.

BRYANMy dear boy, I will find man’sbest friend in Istanbul and Iwill send you one scent a day.

And you will choose the colorand the shape of the smell. It’syou who likes the drawing.

SONIt doesn’t matter anyway. Momwon’t allow us to keep a dog.Did you really hurt thatsilly poodle? Mom calls you avirtual father.

BRYANWonderful. A virtual fatherwho abuses dogs.

Both laugh.

BRYANGive me time and everyonewill have their dog. Justbelieve in me.

SONAll right. Send me one smell a day.

EXT. ISTANBUL STREET - DAY.

Bryan and his new colleague Deniz (35), who iswearing a stylish hijab, watch a demonstration ofprotesters carrying “Stop Canal Istanbul” signs.Several light brown stray dogs are lying on thegrass.

Deniz speaks, using hand gestures to express thewords she does not know in English.

DENIZBe careful in our job.

BRYANWhy?

Deniz tucks away a stray lock of hair.

DENIZ(moves a forefinger)

The enemies of the Canal aredetermined to stop theconstruction of the secondBosphorus.

BRYANI am not interested in

politics.

DENIZ(waves a hand)

I mean not these protesters. There are plenty Islamic Stateand Russian spies.

A stray dog comes over and wags his tail.

BRYANI need a dog like this at home.

DENIZI know well what is it meanto be alone.

BRYANThat doesn’t matter to me. Isimply want to investigate thedog’s olfactory mechanismbecause I'm trying to digitisethe canine sense of smell.

A police water canon starts spraying water at thecrowd. A strong jet hits Bryan in the back andpresses him to a wall along with Deniz. Deniz laughs.

DENIZAre you going torelease me? Let’s dryoff.

Bryan mutters and retreats. Deniz takes her wetscarf off. Bryan stares dumbstruck at her long, black, glossy hair.

Bryan strokes the dog. His hand gets covered inyellow blood.

The sounds of grasshoppers and street carsdisappear. The blue and yellow view goes dark. Thelast to disappear are a few wisps of red and greenwind. Darkness.

INT. VETERINARY CLINIC - DAY.

Bryan and a vet (50) bring in the unconscious dog on astretcher. The vet resembles a pirate with hismoustache, hairy hands and hair tied back with a scarf.

VET(gruff voice)

It will live, the stray. Whatname you want to register itunder?

BRYAN

Name it yourself. Itdoesn’t matter.

VETI will name him predator Kurt,a wolf in English.

BRYANOK, and please embed this chipin to his back and these nano-implants in his skull.

Bryan hands the vet a box that contains the devices.

The Turk glances down at the devices and brings hisface right up to Bryan’s. Both have moustaches.

VETAllah, Allah, I will lose mylicense. I will stitch thewounds and you go away.

The vet closes the door of the surgery. Bryanlooks down into his wallet. The vet opens thedoor.

VETDo you want to create super doglike in movie Mask?

BRYANFrankly, I just want to see scents.

Bryan places several dollar bills on the table. Thepirate’s eyebrows rise. He pushes the dollars back.

VETAllah Allah. Why didn’t youtell me from the beginning? Ialways wished to know whatdoes it mean to have almost amillion times greaterolfactory senses.

The vet laughs a thunderous laugh as he pats Bryanon the back. He shuts the door behind him as heenters the surgery room. He returns after a fewmoments.

VETImplanted. You have to sendme photos of smells.

BRYANYou're actually the firstperson to show any interestin seeing scents.

The pirate laughs and pats Bryan on the back again.

Both carry the sleeping Kurt on stretchers toBryan’s convertible.

INT. APARTMENT - EVENING.

Kurt is sniffing around the room. Bryan iswearing a helmet and watching the lines ofa hologram, but nothing seems to bemoving.

He gives the dog a bone, some meat, water, his socks, shirt and shoes to sniff as he observes the signals.

BRYANSniff, you aren’t a stray dogany more.

Kurt sniffs all the objects with curiosity. Thehologram shows a mess of curves. Bryan brings the sameobjects closer to the dog’s nose again. Kurt turns hisnose away.

BRYAN(shouts, scolds)

Stupid dog. What a tramp.Sniff. I have to send my sona scent.

Kurt lowers his snout, squints and growls showingBryan his big fangs. He starts to bark.

This frightens Bryan, so he cracks a whip againstthe floor. Kurt tucks his tail between his legs andcowers in the corner.

The hologram shows a chaos of signals. Bryantakes the helmet off and pushes his laptopaway.

DENIZYou know we dig Canal Istanbulfrom two sides: the Black Seaand Marmara Sea. Istanbul willbecome an island soon. Yourdrones are registering ahistorical moment. You will seethe beauty of the city from thesky and really you will love it.

BRYANI hope Istanbul’s dogs willhelp reveal the face of thecity too.

DENIZOh! Have you bought a doggy?

BRYANI took a stray in. I’m recordingits brain signals. Look, thismess of lines changes when thedog sniffs different things.

Bryan switches his home camera on with his laptopand both watch Kurt walking around in the room.

DENIZNice dog. He looks like aTurkish Kangal. Bring him towork. Are you friends already?

BRYANWhat for? He’s simplymy lab rat.

DENIZThat’s very cynical. At leastyou are not lonely with thisrat. We could go for walkoutside city together one day.

BRYANSorry, but I’m very busy withmy experiments. My son iswaiting for the first decodedsmell.

Deniz turns around and walks away, angry.

Deniz slams her hand down on the table.

BRYANNo, no. Don’t be angry. I’msorry for my behavior by theCanal. Look, the master’ssmell, I mean my smell, ismore important to the dogthan the scent of a bone.

The screen shows Kurt jumping up and reaching thewhip, biting it and ripping it to small pieces.Bryan jumps. Kurt start to gnaw at the bottom of thedoor.

Deniz cries with laughter. Her hijab slips andher long thick hair spills out.

Deniz flicks her hair away from her face.

BRYANWho needs stroking? Maybe youwere right. I should have gotmyself a puppy. K

DENIZGet to know him. You know ourTurkish proverb – “if the

mountain won’t come toMuhammad...”

BRYANUm. Let’s try going for a walkin the woods, the three of us.Do you really think I’m, um,heartless?

DENIZ(working herhair)

Another call.

BRYANDarling, Kurt’s signals are pure.

DENIZIt’s two o’clock. Butcongratulations. You succeeded. What prevented this successbefore?

BRYANI’m not sure. It’s kind of aPavlovian reaction. It seemsas if Kurt’s brain revealsits activity on the conditionthat a friendly pack membertreats him well.
