LETTER FROM  THE DIRECTORSquashDrive crossed many thresholds this year. We

celebrated our 5th year in operation. We graduated

our first class of 8th graders and completed

our first round of high school applications with

100% acceptance into top area high schools. We

launched a mentorship program. Our SquashDrive

Slam fundraiser quadrupled dollars raised with

$100K in donations. We received a sizable grant

to support education and STEM initiatives from

a local Bay Area fund. We expanded our facility,

including new academic and office space, a library,

and Google Chromebooks so our students can

learn computer skills and code on Khan Academy.

Players traveled to national tournaments and

camps at Williams College, Kenyon College and

Stanford University. On the court, in the books,

and within the community, we witness moments

of transformation in our students everyday. Your

support of SquashDrive means an investment in

their lives and in their future. Thank you for your

continued generosity.

WHO WE ARESquashDrive provides in-depth, long-term enrichment to Oakland youth

through academic tutoring, high school and college preparation, mentoring,

squash coaching, fitness training, community service and cultural opportunities.

We believe it is by working across disciplines that we are able to deeply impart

lessons of perseverance, character, and focus in ways that reach each of our

students differently, and help them to reach their individual potential.

We partner with our teachers, families and schools to be another supportive set

of eyes and ears. Whether we are challenging our players to run another set of

court sprints, supporting them through another page of math drills or teaming up

with them at the local food bank we listen closely to help nurture and uncover our

students unique ability to thrive.

SquashDrive provides all of it’s student-athletes with year-round support,

running programming 6 days a week, including Saturdays. Individually, each

student participates in three sessions a week and receives 100+ hours of squash

instruction, 100+ hours of academic enrichment, participates in 10+ hours of

community service in addition to enrichment and mentorship activities. Squash is

played at Cal’s Recreational Sports Facility, Active Sports in downtown Oakland,

and The University Club of San Francisco.

BY THE  NUMBERSSquashDrive has continually grown

since its founding 5 years ago and

now serves 60 students. Underserved

students from our partner school,

Berkley Maynard Academy, try out for

our program in the 4th or 5th grade

and are selected based on their hard

work, focus, and positive attitude. Once

enrolled, students receive support from

our program through high school and

into college.

ACADEMICS & ENRICHMENTPREPARATION. CURIOSITY. EXPRESSION. In the process of preparing

our students for high school and college, we seek to uncover their innate

curiosities and inspire them to be lifelong learners. Through hands-on tutoring

and guidance, we teach students to be prepared and organized, build their

academic aptitudes and improve their performance in school. More importantly,

we help them to believe in themselves one achievement at a time to set them

on meaningful, fulfilling and sustainable paths.

We don’t just help with homework. Our Academic Director and staff work to

develop individualized academic programs for each of our students. Whether

they are in need of additional support or are surpassing the mark, SquashDrive

provides a strong and consistent source of academic guidance for its students

through in-depth conversations with teachers, one-on-one tutoring, detailed

action plans, and original curriculum. Past activities have included learning to

code, science experiments, essay competitions, a summer book club, and math

intensive workshops.

AVERAGE SCORE INCREASE Students are tested in October and again the following May.

HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT It has been amazing to see our first

group of 8th graders graduate and mature

into young adults. We supported them

through the high school application

process and look forward to seeing them

continue to flourish.

FITNESS TESTSFitness tests are performed at the

beginning and end of the school year

producing marked improvements

across the board.

SQUASH & FITNESSTEAM. PRACTICE. EXECUTION. For us, squash is a special sport. Skinny

racquet, rectangular court, small black ball. Our students learn the joys of a good

sweat, the accountability of competition, the hunger for self-improvement all

while cultivating skill for a game they love and can play for a lifetime. Squash

teaches team and hard work. Our players practice in countless iterations to get

faster, stronger, better. They train in groups, in pairs, solo. They don’t just run and

move, they learn strategy, accountability, persistence. They win and lose. Building

an ongoing practice allows them to see that every session is a building block to a

strong performance, that success happens one step at a time.

EXPANDING HORIZONS. Not all of our

stretching happens on the courts. We take

advantage of every corner of the Bay Area to

expand horizons, feed imaginations, and inspire

our students to aim high. Whether it’s witnessing

the wonder of innovation at Google, seeing the

laws of Physics in action at The Exploratorium,

staring wide eyed at the masters at the SF MoMa,

learning the joy of service at the Bay Area Food

Banks, or caring for our environment at the Marin

Headlands these experiences help our students

find their own innate interests, passions and

shape their sense of self.
