To our new Year 7 pupils, welcome to Baines School.

We hope that you are excited at the prospect of starting here at Baines in September ready to learn a whole range of new subjects in a new environment with lots of new class mates and lots of new teachers.

We want you to feel confident and excited about moving to Baines and that is why we are giving you this booklet. In this booklet are some activities designed to prepare you for your first lessons in a range of subjects and give you an idea of the types of activities and topics that you will learn about. If you find that you can’t do a particular task, please don’t worry. We just want you to do your best!

We expect that the activities in this pack will take you around 45 minutes to an hour each. Please don’t spend any longer than this on them.

During your time in the summer we hope that you will continue to explore your interests and find new ones. Hopefully, you will also continue to read and have found some books that you are looking forward to starting or finishing.

You may use the ruled pages at the back of this booklet, if you wish, to help you to present your work or feel free to use a computer or present your ideas in the way you think best.

Also. some pages in this booklet have been designed so that you can remove them in September when you come to Baines to give your work to your teacher. That is why you will find that some pages in here are blank so that you can remove these without losing your work for other subjects.

We wish you and your families a safe, healthy and happy summer.

Please complete your fact file using the blank pages at the back of this book or present it in any other way you wish.

Amazing Authors When you complete this work, you should:

• Be able to learn about the life of a famous author • Be able to create a creative and interesting fact file

YOUR TASK:

You are to create a fact file based on an author of your choice, which will be used when you start your English lessons at Baines.

This fact file could include:

• A brief biography of the author • Interesting and unusual facts • Have an eye-catching layout • Images to illustrate information

Additionally:

• Make it fun to read • You can use a computer if you want to • Remember - Don’t just copy and paste from the internet • Produce your best work and be creative!

Here are some ideas to get you going:

• When and where was the author born? • Who is their inspiration for writing? • What genre of books do they write and who is their target audience? • Name some of the books which have been written. • Give a brief synopsis of your favourite book. • Why would you recommend this author to other students?

Can you think of more?

Attempt these three mathematical problems as best you can. Show your working out on this page or on paper, bringing any solutions with you for the start of Year 7. Good Luck!

PROBLEM 1 – How many triangles ?

How many triangles can you see in this picture? Answer…………………….

PROBLEM 2 – Four 4s? A popular mathematical pastime: Use exactly four 4s to form every integer (whole number) from 0 to 20, using only the operators +, -, x, ÷, () (brackets), (decimal point), x2 (square), and ! (factorial).

Your Task:

Think back to any science investigations that you completed at primary school. What did you do and what did you find out?

Try an experiment at home; you can have a look at the ideas below and on the opposite page and you can try one of them or choose one of your own. ALWAYS ASK AN ADULT’S PERMISSION.

Written Task – Make a poster or write a newspaper article that describes what you did and what happened. You can draw pictures and include photos of your experiment if you want to. In the first week at Baines your science teacher will ask you for these. The best ones will win a prize for each class.

Science at Baines School is exciting and we enjoy doing experiments like the flame tests that you might have seen on Open Evening

When we do experiments it is very important to keep ourselves and others around us safe. The drawing shows a laboratory (lab) where there are no safety rules. Can you identify all of the hazards in the picture and suggest how these students could work more safely? Circle all of the hazards you can find.

Complete the risk assessment opposite for this very unsafe lab.

Create Colourful Sugar Crystals:

You will need: 4 teaspoons of sugar, 20 teaspoons of water, food colouring and a bowl.

• Stir the sugar into the water until it dissolves (disappears).

• Add 2 or 3 drops of food colouring.

• Leave the bowl in a sunny spot for a few days. What happens? Why?

The Floating Egg:

You will need: 4 glasses of water, salt, sugar, flour, a fresh egg.

• Fill each glass three-quarters full with water.

• Stir a few tablespoons of salt into one of the glasses of water, until it dissolves (disappears).

• Stir the same amount of sugar into the second glass of water.

• Stir the same amount of flour into a third glass of water. Leave the fourth glass of water plain.

• Guess which glass of liquid the egg will float in. Now try them all!

Your map should be no bigger than one side of A4. You should do a plan first; its good to plan and make a draft so that you can tweak and add extra information as you think of it.

This task might sound easy but we want to challenge you by seeing how much information and detail you can get onto your map.

Can you include?SymbolsGrid references (or you might know them as co-ordinates)A compass or North arrowReal geographical information and land marks that would enable another person to use your map

You can draw your map, do it on the computer (or do a mixture), or draw and print photos to make a collage style map.

Have a look at these ideas to get you thinking……

All of the Geography department are very excited to meet our new Year 7s in the new term. The first topic that we will be studying together is called ‘What is a Geographer?’

In your first year of studying History at Baines, we cover everything from the huge invasions of 1066, the horrors of the Black Death and on into life during the Tudor period. However, here at Baines we like to start with you, and your history. The following set of activities are designed to help you explore your own past, and think about what significant events have led you this far. Complete all three tasks.

Chronology __________________________________________________________________________

Evidence __________________________________________________________________________

Task one

One of the most basic ideas that any good History student must understand is something called Chronology.

Chronology is the study of when things happened. This is important because only when we know when things happened can we start to look at how and why!

When historians put events into the correct time order, starting with the earliest event and ending with the latest event, this is called chronological order.

The best way of doing this is with a timeline. These can measure time in hours, days, years or centuries.

Now, create a timeline of your life on an A4 piece of paper, from your birth through until today. It should include at least 6 key events. Please make it as colourful as you can!

Task two

How do historians know something really happened?

Evidence! Bones, diaries, bits of pottery… a good historian can use all kinds of evidence to figure out what has happened in the past.

Now, add at least two pieces of photographic evidence to your timeline, to prove that this event actually took place!

Task three

Another key skill in history is picking out the most important event and explaining why this event was so important. Use the following writing frame below to explain which parts of your life have been significant.

The event on my timeline which is the most important is…

It is the most important because…

The second most important event is …

This is not as important as the first because…
