Dear Friends, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the

age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” These well-known words serve as the introductory lines in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, a novel that takes place during the French Revolution, across Paris and London, first published in 1859.

Although we are over a century and a half removed from Dickens’ penning of these words, great literature, as it ought to do, raises perennial questions that should direct us to seek final answers and permanent things. You may be asking yourselves, “where is Fr. Brian going with this?”

Our world can accomplish things never before seen; nevertheless, we cannot hide the fact that these times are certainly tumultuous. It seems as though Dickens we can rightly say: “It is the best of times, it is the worst of times.” The world that we currently inhabit is one obviously beset by storms. We are bracing ourselves against the storminess of this world cosmologically through the recent hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. There are other types of storms that are particularly human—the confusion, the polarity within a society, the noise, the disintegration of the family, and the denial of the fundamental reality of truth—is seemingly as stormy as it gets.

In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI reflects upon the storms of the latter kind: “How many winds of doctrine have we known in recent decades, how many ideological currents, how many ways of thinking? The small boat of the thought of many Christians has often been tossed about by these waves - flung from one extreme to another: from Marxism to liberalism, even to libertinism; from collectivism to radical individualism; from atheism to a vague religious mysticism; from agnosticism to syncretism and so forth.”

In this light, no matter how beautiful the town or village, developed or culturally rich, when the storm clouds loom one must seal up the house and ultimately depend upon the strength of the foundation. During the storm, a tree will depend upon the depths of its roots and not the beauty of its leaves. As the storm approaches, a herd of cattle (an example near and dear to a native Kansan!) will depend on one another as they huddle tightly in the corner of a pasture. If the foundation is not strong, if the roots are not deep, or if one tries do go it alone when the storm hits they expose themselves to the elements of destruction.

Strength, depth and communion. While the storms are passing through, Christ offers these to us and more. He calms the winds, and He quiets the storms. Those who witnessed this truth were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?” (Mk 4,4) And only a renewal of Christian life and thought, can bring peace to our culture. Awaking from sleep he says to the storm: “Quiet Be! Be still!” And they obey. Perhaps it was what Jesus did not say or do that that is most telling. Jesus’s sleep is an assurance that no storm or evil will ever transpire that doesn’t permit. We must not be terrified, but faithful.

And so, we turn to Jesus through Mary. How many times we have been witnesses of profound conversions to the faith, after the prayer of the Holy Rosary! Countless times the Rosary has been the source of the correction of morals, and the growth in holiness of many, many souls. What most people seem to ignore, however, is that it is also a real protection from disaster and evil. And our Lady of Fatima repeatedly emphasizes this point: In July 13, 1917 She says to the three little shepherds: “Pray the Rosary in order to obtain peace.” In September 13 of the same year: “Continue to pray the Rosary in order to obtain the end of the war.” And finally on October 13, she says: “Continue to pray the Rosary every day. The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon return to their homes.” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has also said: “The Rosary is a spiritual ‘weapon’ in the battle against evil, against all violence, for peace in hearts, in families, in society and in the world.”

Join us in praying the rosary here at the church, strong in Mary, Rooted in Christ and praying in communion. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

Thank You Grace! After six years of dedicated, hard working service

to the parish, our Office Manager, Grace Laxamana, has resigned from the parish office in order to accept a new position at St. Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park. This was not an easy decision for Grace be-cause she has become a big part of parish life.

Although she may not be coordinating activities, you will still see her at the parish—but as a parish-ioner (and hopefully as a volunteer). We already miss her presence in the office and appreciate all she gave. Please thank her next time you see her and keep her in your prayers!

Sick & Homebound Ministry Are you interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister or registering those who are sick within our parish to receive the Sacraments at home (Confession, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Communion)? By the Grace of God, we do already have a number of officially trained and commissioned Eucharistic Ministers but we do need volunteers to help with registering people and become part of our team. Father Jonathan Dumlao is in charge of this ministry and will be speaking at all of the Masses about this great need. Some home-bound individuals in our parish would appreciate a one time visit or regularly scheduled visits. Can you help Father Jonathan? After each Mass, there will be a table at the front of the Church with some of our Eucharistic Ministers who can speak to you about their experiences and answer some of your questions. They will also have the necessary forms available for you to fill out in person or you can take them home and turn it into the office at your earliest convenience.
