Let us learn about a missionary who was called and wasused by God to do great things.

Catherine and William Booth lived in London in the middleof the nineteenth century, at the dawn of the IndustrialRevolution. The Industrial Revolution had its own vices inEngland, like unemployment, labour abuse, forceful childemployment and homelessness. Both of them were activelypreaching the Gospel in many churches then. For the first 10years of their marriage, William kept asking himself, “Whatshould I do with my life. What is God calling me to do?”

Late one night he took a walk through the slums of London’sEast End. Every fifth building was a pub. Most had steps at thebar so little children could climb up and order alcoholic drinks. That night he told Catherine how it seemed that God was callinghim to do something for those children and their parents ofLondon. He didn’t need to go to some foreign country to findpeople who needed help. They were right there in front of him.

Later that year, 1865, the couple opened the “ChristianMission” in London’s poorer districts. This grew into whatwe know as the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army went tothe poorest areas, provided them food and shelter, and theytirelessly advocated the rights of factory workers, workingwomen and homeless children.
