PAY IT FORWARD = an obligation to do three good deeds for others in response to a good deed

that one receives. Such good deeds should accomplish things that the other person cannot

accomplish on their own. In this way, the practice of helping one another can spread geometrically

through society, at a ratio of three to one, creating a social movement with an impact of making the

world a better place.

Could this idea work in reality?

What, if any, are the issues with this idea of ‘paying it forward’?

Would this make the world a better place?

What Christian teachings does this idea link to and why?

There are many Christian teachings that show

what is morally right. They show that it is a

Christians DUTY to care for others and that

people should especially help those in need. Use the following

POINT: Christians believe they have a moral duty to help others because of the ‘Golden Rule’, this means…

to treat people how you would like to be treated, ‘do to others as you would have them do to you’.

EXAMPLE: To put this into practice Christians should…• look at policies and see how they will affect other people and see if they would be happy

being treated that way e.g. a party wants to cut benefits for the disabled. • If someone was lonely, or excluded in some kind of way (including groups within society)

they will welcome them; the Church should welcome all members within a society.• Christians will give to charity and help those who go hungry or are homeless as they

would hope to be helped in the same situation.

What is the moral of this parable?

• Christians will be judged on their actions

• In helping others they are serving Jesus

• There is a reward for helping others

• There is a punishment for not helping others.

How can this be linked to Christian moral duties and responsibilities?

They must show care for those in need; the hungry, thirsty, lonely,

naked, sick and prisoners.

When Jesus was with the crowd, He told them a parable about the sheep and goats. Jesus said, “In the end times, God will

sit on His throne with all His glory and judge the people.

Everyone will stand before God, and He will judge them one by one. God will separate the sheep to His right side and the

goats to His left side.

Then Son of Man will says to those on His right side, 'Come, you who are being blessed. You give me water to drink when I

am thirsty. You give me food to eat when I am hungry.

When I was ill, you care for me by paying me a visit. When I have no clothes to wear, you give me a clothes to put on. When I was locked up in the prison cell, you visited me.'

The righteous will say to Him,’ When did we give you food when you are hungry? When were you ill that we pay you a

visit? When did you have no clothes to wear that we give you a clothes to wear? When did we pay you a visit when you are

in the prison?’

The son of Man answered,’ Whenever you care for one of my followers, you are doing it for Me.’

Then He will say to those on His left side, 'Go away from Me! When I was hungry, you didn’t give me any food to eat.

When I was thirsty, you didn’t give me any water to drink. When I am naked and have no clothes to wear, you didn’t

give me clothes to put on. When I was at the prison, you didn’t pay me a visit.

When I fell sick, you didn’t pay me a visit.'The righteous ones received eternal life but those who are sinners and did not help Me at all will go to hell. Therefore,

anything that you do for one of my followers, you are doing it for me.”

AM I MY BROTHERS KEEPER?…

Abel kills his brother Cain. God asks him where Abel is and Cain replies with the quote ‘Am I my brothers keeper?’. God punishes Cain by making

him become a homeless wanderer.

What is the moral of this parable? This shows God wanted us to look after each

other (be ‘my brother’s keeper’) and if you refuse to look after your fellow man you

will be punished. How can this be linked to Christian moral

duties and responsibilities? It is important to love and respect to everyone, to be compassionate and kind and understanding. It is important to not

give in to negative emotions such as hatred and jealousy.

Page 10: To use picture clues, biblical passages and media clips to understand Christian teachings on moral duties and responsibilities

11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his

brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the

world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life

residing in him.

WE SHOULD LOVE ONE ANOTHER…(1JOHN 3:11-15)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZtyi8vrO5QWhat is the meaning of this passage?

St Paul used the example of Cain and Abel to warn Christians that they have moral duty

to actively care for others. How can this be linked to Christian moral

duties and responsibilities?Christians should not stand by and do nothing while others suffer. They should

get involved in helping those in need through charity work, fund raising, raising

awareness, volunteering etc.
