FROM THE DEPARTMENT HEADAND MANAGING DIRECTOR

I certainly hope you can support our program and stu-dents in this very practical way, while you treat yourself to a variety of performances. Our upcoming shows range from the magical fable that unfolds in The River Bride, to zany holiday cheer in Inspecting Carol, to an opening up to the vast universe in Silent Sky and ending with the be-loved classic musical, My Fair Lady. A trip to the theatre is a chance for us to enter another world for a time and to gain new insight into our own lives – to take the time to experience humanity, ‘live’, directly in front of us. Theatre provides us with a reason to put away the phones and computers and be present with artistry that tells a story, and perhaps we find a kernel of wisdom in that story that we take away with us, and are all the richer because of it. Thank you for taking the time to be present with us, ‘live’, for this performance and we look forward to you joining us next season.

Time has certainly flown and you are now attending the final production of our 2017/18 season. We have spent many hours planning our next season for you and it’s time to buy your sea-son tickets in advance to insure the best seats at all of our shows - information is in the lobby.

RENT is produced through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

DIRECTORS NOTES

DRAMATURGICAL NOTESI lived in the East Village in the 80’s. I ate at Life Café, had a bath tub in my kitchen, performed at the Pyramid Club, and visited friends in the hospital that were dying of a disease we didn’t un-derstand, much less had a name for. We were drawn to the broken down streets of Alphabet City (the area between Avenues A, B, C and St. Mark’s Place) because it offered community, a place to cre-ate, and cheap rent. A poem I wrote in 1989 described the neigh-borhood as a place ‘where every thought is a poem, and each word a song, and everyone walking around is like this’. Even though my time there was punctuated by heartbreak and loss, it taught me how to love and how to survive. Rent celebrates the lives of people that were real and beautiful, and I am so grateful to have had the oppor-tunity to share my memories with these young, dynamic artists as they bring that story to life for you. Enjoy the show. -- Layle Keane Chambers

Having seen the original Broadway production of RENT and several subsequent performances, this is a show I’ve always wanted to di-rect as it encompasses such a wonderfully diverse range of char-acters, situations and emotions. Perhaps you weren’t like these characters, living in a loft apartment in New York City in the late 1980’s with a diverse group of artists, as I was, but all the same I’m sure you’ll find something that resonates with you. From relation-ships of friendship and romance, to health issues, living situations and the pursuit of dreams, we all know that often life surprises us - with joy and with challenges. Many of life’s challenges depicted in the show remain with us now, from a substance addiction prob-lem that effects more than 21 million Americans, to an estimated 1.1 million people in the U.S. living with HIV, and a reported million people having died from AIDS-related illnesses around the world in 2016. I think the characters in RENT have the right idea – measure your life in love as none of us truly know what lies ahead, but we can revel in the joy of the moment. Perhaps this is why the musical has been consistently produced for more than 20 years, and I hope RENT will inspire you today. -- Wil Kilroy

She has assistant stage managed In the Time of the Butterflies, Rocky Horror Show, Shout! The Mod Musical, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Evan Stanfield (Choreographer) Being asked to choreograph Rent was incredible as it is his all-time favorite show and for him to be able to help create the story through movement was amazing. Evan has choreographed smaller pieces for himself, and in high school he choreographed The Addams Family. He is so grateful to have worked on this show and would like to thank everyone for coming and seeing the production.

Arianna Swinson (Scenic Designer) Arianna is a senior at NMSU. Rent will be her third main stage scenic design.
