How did the Railway develop?

The canals became very busy. Journeys took longer and longer as barges queued to get through locks.

Gradually businessmen began to exploit the possibilities of a new transport system: the railway.

The Potential of Railways• As soon as James Watt and

Matthew Boulton built the steam engine that could turn a wheel, it was just a question of time before a locomotive was made.

• A locomotive is an engine that moves along rails and the man credited with building the first one was Richard Trevithick in 1804.

• The 1825 Stockton to Darlington railway was the worlds first passenger railway.

The Rainhill Trials• The first major line was the new

Liverpool to Manchester railway designed by George Stephenson in 1829.

• Stephenson needed a steam engine to pull a passenger train on the line and the prize for the winning design was £500.

• A crowd of 15,000 turned up on the day. But what was the winning design?

How did the railways change industry and leisure time?• Railways soon became big business.

By 1847 over 250,000 people were employed by the industry.

• The coming of the railways increased the demand for iron and coal. Stations were built across the country.

• London businessmen began to move to cities such as Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester because they could now be reached quickly by rail.
