Involvement in International Affairs

Economic stability- countries uniting with one another through trade will cause the buying and selling of commodities between countries creating a better and more stable economy.

Example- Free Trade

India

The opening if India's boarders to trade links with the idea of self determination. India needed to become more economically stable and to do this they needed to have more jobs, so it opened its boarders to trade more of its items to the rest of the world. In doing this the economy became stable and it led to many positive things for India.

Haiti The humanitarianism act within Haiti was

organized by the Red Cross, which resulted in the union of many different countries around the world to help a nation in need. Internationalism was spread through both a economic aspect as well as a social aspect. Influential people such as music artists, politicians and famous people all contributed their talents and presence to encourage people to donate money to help the people affected by the devastating disaster in Haiti.

Afghanistan & Iraq

Canada and the USA sent troops over to Afghanistan on a peacekeeping mission. Iraq has been known for its terrorism and its dictatorship government. We are helping the people of Afghanistan for the future. Its not in our best interest to be fighting but it gives our country a good global reputation around the world while we help and promote peace in a country.

Canada being in Afghanistan is a perfect example of Nationalism being sacrificed for internationalism because the problems in their country will not directly affect Canada.

Explore Types of Internationalism

Revolutionary Internationalism-The belief that conflicts within societies are determined by international factors and alliances. It can also be known as wanting your nationalism to be everyone else's nationalism.

Cuban Revolution- Cuba took up arms in fight for communism they were encouraging communism on Capitalist Central American countries.

Explore Types of Internationalism

Liberal Nationalism- Achieve global structures within the international system that are inclined towards promoting a liberal world order. Liberalists are dedicated to encouraging democracy to emerge globally: except change but would rather stay as they are.

Franklin Roosevelt encouraged democracy within America

Explore Types of Internationalism

Hegemonic Internationalism- Exerting a dominating influence over other groups or societies.

American terrorism is an example because everyone around the world has the same views as the Americans on what needs to be done to reduce terrorism like security checks and the No Fly List.

Foreign Policy

Foreign Policy is the diplomatic policy of a nation in its interactions with other nations.

Multilaterism is closely linked with foreign policy because its the working together of countries in unison working together to complete a task.

Haiti, Katrina and the recent Tsunami in Thailand are examples of different countries coming together to complete a task. Nations around the world came together to achieve a stable living environment that was destroyed.

Foreign Policy Continued

Another concept that is closely tied with Foreign Policy is Supra nationalism which is doing something that looks goof for your own country but may not necessarily be beneficial.

Troops in Afghanistan helping the US is a perfect example of Supra Nationalism Foreign policy because it looks gives Canada a good reputation but is not creating any benefits for our country. We are also their for peacekeeping.

If you have a good reputation the chances of your country having conflicts with other nations is smaller. People may also view a country such as Canada with a good worldwide reputation as a threat because it most likely has many alliances.

Foreign Policy Continued

The Kyoto Protocol is another example of foreign policy.

Kyoto protocol is an agreement between various countries to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases and limit fossil fuel production to ensure a healthier environment.

It is a widely known international agreement.

Organizations Promoting Internationalism

International organizations promote internationalism by creating peace between nations and promoting humanitarianism.

Certain organizations also promote trade and many other economically dependant relationships between countries.

Without these organizations there would be much more conflict and tension between nations.

Arctic Council

The Arctic Council has a population of about four million people.

Over thirty different indigenous groups all with different languages and culture are part of the Arctic Circle.

It is a intergovernmental forum which addresses issues faced by the arctic government and the people of the arctic(indigenous).

This organization promotes internationalism because they are dealing with the problems within the arctic nations.

Impacts of Internationalism Internationalism creates different

issues worldwide. When different countries are working

together and have common goals there are going to be problems involved in the process.

Page 15: To What Extent Should We Embrace Nationalism

Conflict

Internationalism causes conflict between nations.

When countries are working together and benefiting off one another one may eventually get the short end of the stick and this will create conflict because they will want something in return.

Page 16: To What Extent Should We Embrace Nationalism

Environment Internationalism has negative

effects on our environment.

In 1985 it was scientifically determined that holes were developing in the ozone layer. Countries came together and determined what could be done to fix this and future problems dealing with the environment.

Kyoto Protocol and G8 meetings deal with these problems

Page 17: To What Extent Should We Embrace Nationalism

Nationalism Sacrificed for Internationalism When countries strive for

internationalism it results in them losing some of their sovereignty.

In combining together nations it start to do things for each other and lose their national independence.

A country who is all for Nationalism may be behind in the international world.
