D63 FALL CONFERENCE RUNDOWN

any goal in your life, you must see it in your mind, first, before you’ll ever be able to achieve it. Your vision must be clear, and you must be able to believe it. • Decision – Make the decision as to what you

want to accomplish. Motivation comes from just getting started.

• Focus –Dedicate yourself to your goal,

practice, practice, practice like a Tiger (Woods)

• Action Plan - Learn from your champions According to Tate, “one person told me that so far he had talked to 30 conference attendees who had brand new stories they had never told before.” His educational session “Get Yes! To Your Every

Request!” included the 6 Weapons of Influence:

1. Reciprocation: We feel obligated to return favors performed for us.

2. Liking: The more we like people, the more we want to say yes to them.

3. Authority: We look for experts to show us the way.

4. Consistency: We want to act consistently with our commitments and values.

5. Social proof: We look to what others do to guide our behavior.

6. Scarcity: The less available the resource, the more we want it.

And, finally his session “Manage Things – Lead People: Leadership Lessons Learned the Hard-way!” included the following traits of a good leader:

Ed Tate’s keynote presentation, “The Story-Finder (tm) – How to Create New Stories in Minutes!” included his Four-Step Success Formula for successful storytelling. • Vision - Before you achieve

Good Leaders: 1. Praise People in Public (Behavior) 2. Provide Feedback in Private

(Behavior) 3. Successes – The Team Gets the

Credit 4. Failures – the Leader takes the

responsibility

5. Manage Things, Lead People

Becky Begarly, DTM

1. Resume and LinkedIn Profile Maintenance

2. Set up Lunchtime Conversations With Influencers

3. Remember to Network 4. Attend Industry Events 5. Keep Your Image Professional 6. Schedule Quarterly Meetings 7. Review Career Goals 8. Read Industry Books

Becky Begarly’s, DTM, education session, “How to Reach Your Full Potential: Toastmasters and Beyond” included the following tips to maximize your resources:

Michael Ginsberg’s, session "If a Toastmaster Falls in a Forest - An Executive Recruiter’s Advice on how to use Toastmasters for your Resume, LinkedIn Profile

Michael Ginsberg

And in Interviews" provided ideas on how to use and highlight your Toastmasters skills when you are looking to make a career move. Topics included: 1. LinkedIn: Statistics to Educate, A Profile to

Emulate and Photos to Excoriate; 2. How a Recruiter Reads Your Resume; and 3. The Job Interview- How to Be at Your Best

& How to Interview the Company While They Interview You

Jimmie Robert’s, DTM session “Club Building Team Dynamics” covered eight different topics intended to better equip Toastmasters in building insightful leaders who will, in turn, build strong clubs with energetic members. The topics were:

Andrea Burnette, DTM; John Breb, ACG, ALB; Clayton Wraith, CC

Understanding the Anatomy of a club

How to search for Leads for new clubs and members

Turning Leads into Opportunities

Changing Opportunities into New Clubs

Detecting Issues in Mature Clubs

Transferring Issues into Challenges

Restoring the Fun Factor in clubs

Keeping the Leaders Motivated “While there were takeaways in each of the Topics,” said Jimmie, “I hope that the attendees will certainly remember the last two. Motivated leaders will continually use several fun factors to energize themselves, and other club members, to thrive and grow. Keep your spirits high and your focus clear.”

A perpetual favorite at Conferences, the speech contests, began with a target speech by Gayle Mingledorff, Chattanooga Chatters Advanced Toastmasters Club followed by evaluations by the Division champions. Winners included Andrea Burnette, DTM,

Mark Oshman, DTM; Quinton Goodman, CC; Flash Black, ATMB, CL

and and Clayton Wraith, CC, Skyline Raconteurs. And, closing out the Conference was District 63’s Humorous Speech Contest. Winners included Mark Oshman, DTM, Hixson Toasmtasters; Quinton Goodman, CC, Parthenon Toastmasters Club; and Flash Black, ATMB, CL, Central Communicators Toastmasters Club, Speechmasters Advanced Toastmasters Club, and Fountain City Club.

“The best humorous speech contest I’ve seen in years! All five contestants would be winners in other districts!” declared Ed Tate.
