A Conference to RememberBryan Jolley, District 68 GovernorThis month’s District 68 Newsletter features several
important pieces of information about our Fall 2013 Conference, running from November 15-17 in Baton Rouge. I am really excited about this conference, and no, it’s not just because I’m the District Governor! Next month’s conference includes a star-studded lineup of educational speakers and distinguished guests:
• Our previously announced keynote speaker will be2005 World Champion of Public Speaking, Lance Miller.
He will be sharing multiple sessions with us, including one themed around his CD “Building a Championship Club”, which we awarded to clubs that had 4 or more officers trained at our summer TLIs. • We recently learned that a second keynote speaker will be joining us next month: Mike Storkey, Toastmasters International 2nd Vice President. Mike is newly elected into this role, and is slated to be the International President in 3 years. He is traveling to visit us all the way from Australia, and we will be enjoying 2 educational sessions from him at our conference.• A local speaker, Tonia Askins, will be conducting another educational session for us. Tonia is an entrepreneur and motivational speaker hailing from Baton Rouge and we’re excited to have her as well.
If that’s not enough incentive for you, we also have several other great events at our conference. We will be airing SPEAK the movie Friday night, which is a documentary covering contestants preparing for the World Championship of Public Speaking. Saturday will feature the Hall of Fame lunch, where we will recognize achievements from around the District. Our best competitors in Table Topics will face off for the District tile on Friday night, and our Humorous Speech champion will be crowned Saturday. There are even more gems on the conference agenda, all in all making for a fantastic weekend of learning, entertainment, networking, and fun! Whether you drive in just for Saturday or spend the full weekend with us, I know you’ll enjoy your conference experience and I look forward to seeing many of you next month in Baton Rouge!
Cheers,
Bryan JolleyDistrict 68 Governor

WHY TOASTMASTERS...?Alejandro J. Tornato (Area 2 Governor)
ecently I had the privilege of going to Oslo, Norway for a business trip which lasted for four weeks. It was my very first time in Norway, though I had travelled through various European countries during my time in the United Kingdom many years ago. Now, during this trip I made it one of my top priorities to visit a Toastmasters Club,
if there was one...and guess what, of course there was a club, and it was my honor to visit the only Toastmasters Club in the city of Oslo. This is a club that meets weekly and one week they hold the meeting in Norwegian and the following week in English. Knowing this fact ahead of time, I showed up on English week to make sure I was able to follow the whole proceeding, and as a matter of fact I was asked to be an evaluator, which I accepted immediately.
Why did I start this article sharing this story with all of you? Well, because recently I have been thinking a great deal about my very own passion and my mission in life and the role that Toastmasters has already played and is still playing in my life. For those of you who know me, I am a passionate and fervent advocate of the “Art of Connecting” and what better vehicle to connect with people than through the awesome power of words...powerful spoken words!!!! Toastmasters has allowed me to share stories and my own personal thoughts on issues that I care deeply about, and it helped me to make a difference in people’s lives, I had many opportunities to establish heart connections with lots of people, to get to know them deeply and not just at skin level...and Toastmasters was always part of this wonderful journey.
I heard many times fellow toastmasters been asked the question: Why did you join a Toastmasters’ club? Well, in my opinion a more important question should be: Why are you still enjoying club meetings? In my case, because it continues to provide me with an excellent outlet to express my ideas, and to share my message with people all over the world; no matter where I go, I know that the doors of a toastmaster club are always wide open to receive me.
Then...why toastmasters?, because it gives me joy to be part of a global project that started years ago with one simple vision and one man who saw a need and acted upon it, and today hundreds of thousands of people in practically every corner of the world are able to take their communication skills to the next level and make a true impact wherever they are...by “Creating a Change with the Words They Speak”.
