What is tobacco?
The EB defines tobacco as any of the numerous species of NICOTIANA or
The cured leaves of several of the species that are used after processing in various ways of smoking, snuffing, chewing and extracting of nicotine.
Historical Development Of Tobacco Cultivation And Consumption in Africa Tobacco cultivation and consumption got to Africa through various ways. According to Paul
Ozanne in his article entitled ‘The Diffusion of Smoking in West Africa’::
“In tracing the spread of tobacco in West Africa, four main classes of evidence have been used: Christian documents, Muslim documents, oral tradition, and archaeological material… From the Christian documents, we know that tobacco was grown and smoked in Gambia by 1620, in Sierra Leone by 1607, Liberia by 1623 and Congo by 1612”
Tobacco was independently introduced into our West African neighbor Ghana around 1640, invariably, tobacco cultivation and consumption must have been introduced into what is now known as Nigeria about the same period.
