club Race, board vote and the 50th anniversary/holiday party club RaceBy the time you read this the 2010 Carolinas Region Club Race aka ‘The Carolinas Challenge’ will be in the books and I anticipate that it will have been a very successful event. As most of you know we had to cancel the 2009 Club Race due to unforeseen circumstances and despite some heroic behind the scenes efforts at the Regional and National levels, there was simply no possible way to salvage the event without a loss of quality or a huge financial hit to the Region.

The National Club Race Committee and the National Club Race Chair, Bruce Boeder, were very concerned at the cancellation of our race due to the fact that when most Regions drop a Club Race, regardless of the reasons, that

race tends to go away permanently. There were a lot of long, late night calls about the topic. However, I reassured Bruce that the cancellation was very much an anomaly, that the structure for our new Track Committee was already in place and the preliminary planning for the 2010 Race was well ahead of schedule.

We will have a full Club Race write-up in next month’s TR but I wanted go ahead and thank our Track Committee, specifically Nadine Saville and Brian Powell for the untold hours that they put into bringing this race back to reality.

board voteThe Carolinas Region Nomination Committee completed its work and has put together the slate for the 2011/2012 Term for your Board of Directors. You will find a ballot in this edition of Tobacco Roads which you can mail in, but the quickest and easiest way will be to vote electronically at:

http://carolinasregionpca.wufoo.com/forms/carolinas-region-porsche-club-of-america/

If you receive event emails from me you will have already received an email containing the above link. You will need to provide your PCA Membership Number regardless of your chosen method of voting.

50th anniversary celebration / annual holiday partyAlso in this issue of Tobacco Roads you will find the Registration Form for the combined Carolinas Region Annual Holiday Party and 50th Anniversary Celebration. We anticipate a large turnout for this historic event including many of our Region’s Past Presidents as well as next year’s PCA National President, Manny Alban, who will be representing the PCA National Executive Committee. Regardless as to whether you are a long time member or just recently joined PCA, please come out and celebrate this incredible milestone for this Region.

That’s it for this month! As always if you have any ideas, comments or feedback please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or (704) 906-0343.

A massive, record-breaking crowd of more than 124,000 race week fans saw Franck Montagny, Stephane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy grab the overall win in their diesel-powered Peugeot 908 HDi over their team car in second and the Audi Sport Team Joest’s Audi R15 Plus TDI finishing third. But as

Porsche fans we were there to see our favorite marque.

Porsche’s 911 GT3 R Hybrid, running in the event unclassified, finished an

impressive 18th overall. Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller drove the car in its North American debut. The Hybrid is a very unique car and was the first official factory entry from Porsche to run in America since the GT1 at the 1998 Petit Le Mans, showing the strong backing Porsche is putting behind this new technology.

Without an entry in the top-flight LMP1 class, the Muscle Milk Team CytoSport Porsche RS Spyder of Klaus Graf, Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr was Porsche’s only Prototype class entry fighting for the win in LMP2. The team placed second to the Honda Performance Development entered by Patrón Highcroft Racing, a great achievement based on the problems they faced. From the start the car sounded rough, turning out to have a broken cylinder that forced the Spyder

to run on seven cylinders all day. While the car was slower than expected, it showed amazing strength to run 1000km on a damaged motor.

Patrick Long and Jörg Bergmeister finished fifth in their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR for Flying Lizard Motorsports and won their second straight class driving title. The Lizards lost out on the season-long team championship to BMW Rahal Letterman Racing. The race saw a dramatic finish with the leading Risi Competizione Ferrari F430 GT running out of fuel just 2 corners from the finish handing the GT2 class win to the #4 Corvette C6.R of Oliver Gavin, Jan Magnussen and Emmanuel Collard. The corral at porscheplatz (above) showed a wide variety of cars including a race car from the cayman Interseries, and the

hospitality tent was always busy with special activities and presentations. There was Joy for bmW and peugeot (right), but a

tough race for the porsche Rs spyder (opposite center) while other of stuttgart’s finest had better luck (opposite above and below).

TRG drivers Andy Lally, Henri Richard and Duncan Ende won in the all-Porsche GT3 Cup based GT Challenge class, with Black Swan Racing’s Tim Pappas and Jeroen Bleekemolen winning the GTC team championship.

Like most ALMS events, Road Atlanta has parking areas set up for various marques like Corvette, Audi, and of course Porsche. Porsche AG and Porsche Cars North America hosted this year’s Porscheplatz (Porsche Owner’s Corral). Not only do you get a discount on infield parking but you also stand a better chance of actually getting a parking space compared to the 124,000 fans mentioned earlier. Attendees have access to the hospitality tent when the weather is bad (this year was awesome, but the rain last year was torrential) as well as special programs including talks by top Porsche management, race team presentations, a Michelin Tech Talk, raffle drawings, an IMSA Guided Hot Pit tour drawing and a Mid-Race update presented by Michelin engineers. Parade laps on the track were available to the first 100 cars to sign up as well.

Look for more coverage of the race elsewhere in this issue of Tobacco Roads in Rock Webb’s Racin’ and Ramblin’ column.

Harvey Yancey President Carolinas Region PCA

Hello dear friends.

Sorry for the lack of material lately. I’m working on a new agenda I can’t give details on yet, but I did manage to spot a great, historically significant news brief on my October 26th PCA newsletter. Did you see it? The gist of the article is about submissions of Porsches to qualify as the oldest model (356, 911, 912, etc) sold “on American soil”.

The oldest award of all was a rare, red 1952 356 Cabriolet, ironically very similar to the first one I ever rode in as a young boy. If you’re able to log on to the Internet, I’d encourage you to follow this link and read about it and others during this gala anniversary banner year celebration.

The lows – 24 hours of lemonsYes, we have sunk to the lowest form of racing, THE 24 HOURS OF LeMONS! Dick Lane and I had the opportunity to co-drive an 89 Honda Civic LeMons entry at CMP. Hey, it was awesome!! The car was prepared by Steve Fricker at St Andrews Express Body Shop and they did a great job, too great in fact. We were penalized 40 laps for having too “nice” of a car. The tech guy said it was better than his street car!! The car was painted a turkey turd tan with a wood-grain finish to give the appearance of a wooden vehicle complete with a medieval catapult sticking out the rear window, thus the name CRAPAPULT.

We started out in 98th position, out of about 110 entries. That is a lot of cars on the one mile CMP Track. We had six drivers, three of which had never raced before, we just wanted to survive the next two days of “Racing”?

Racing? Yes it really was with lots of passing. It was like turn one at the start of a race, “continuously” busy, busy, busy. So we made it through nine hours of racing on Saturday without any major incidents. The new brake rotors were warped so we replaced them Sunday morning. By the way, we had moved up to 30th or so and were running pretty good lap times of 1 min. 6 sec. for the mile course. After an exciting evening at Gus’s Restaurant in downtown Kershaw we retired to the exclusive Executive Inn for a good night’s sleep.

Sunday dawned cloudy and the weather report said rain. Great, we should have left the sunroof in place and kept the wipers!

Racing resumed at 9:00 and my turn was at 10:00; that’s when the rain started. It was bad, I could not see out the Plexiglas windshield and with the sunroof open I had a nice shower going on. Hey, I only hit one car! A little to fast into turn one, locked up the brakes and BAM. The corner workers didn’t see it (good!), and no major damage to the Crapapult! The rain eased off and we kept on trucking until, well, well until our driver number 3 hit a piece of a Volvo and got black flagged. “Oh Crap”, now the fun begins.

The Crapapult Team car #92 was summoned to the Judges Stand for our penalty! We were forced to don pink penitentiary t-shirts and shorts and then, linked together by a black chain, “the chain gang”, was paraded around the paddock chanting “we are lousy drivers”. Very embarrassing.

So we missed 30 minutes of racing but managed to get it together and finish a cool 26th overall !

As they say “WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR”.

Racing and Rambling By Rock Webb

From One Extreme to Another

And by the way, Porsche Cub guys Doug Roche, CC Canada, Bill Gerwig and Fred Benedict were also there racing their own LeMons cars!

The highs – petit le mansWhat a fantastic event, outstanding international road racing right in our back yard. Kathy and I decided to go over Friday in order to watch Gary Pennington, a fellow Carolinas PCA member and racer, race in the Petrón GT3 Cup Challenge support race. Gary had been at Road Atlanta since Monday and had lots of practice in the rain and had run a wet race on Thursday. He had High hopes for the Friday race since the track had dried out and it was a sunny day. But it was not meant to be; we were watching from the hill facing the ess’s but no Gary. He had gotten tagged in turn 3 and could not continue – what a bummer.

The car was not heavily damaged and Gordon Friedman of Autometrics said it would be ready for the Club Race at CMP. Better luck there, Gary!

We watched a few more races and headed back to our hotel at Commerce Ga. where Kathy got in some serious shopping at Tanger Outlet. Saturday morning we headed for Road Atlanta and reached the exit on I-85 for the track around 9:30 AM. The race was to start at 11:00. Wow! Traffic was already backed-up, so there was gonna be a big crowd at the Petit Le Mans! We got to the track around 10:00 just in time to mingle

as the lemons web site says, “Where halloween meets gasoline.”

Gary pennington’s challenge car at Road atlanta.

with the drivers and pit bunnies in the paddock before the race started.

When the race started, we watched the cars pass through turn one and up the hill. First came the low-slung LMP cars followed by the GT cars – Porsches, Ferraris, Corvettes, Jaguars and BMWs. Man, those ‘Vettes were loud: there’s nothing like an American V-8. The Diesel Peugeots pretty much dominated the race with the Audis close behind. The Peugeots are good for 10 or 12 hours, but not much longer They all broke at the Le Mans 24 in June and the Audi’s won.

Regardless, there was fine racing in all the classes. The highlight of the race for me was when the Ferrari that was leading in the GT class ran out of gas on the last lap. The Corvette, in hot pursuit, won the class.

And just for your information, Jimmy Martin and Mike McMenamin had podium finishes at the Club race at Road America – way to go guys!

FYI, we had a great time on the Fall tour, to Charleston, SC and had perfect top down weather. We had a nice lunch, at CMP Cantina and were headed to the track to do some laps. However, one of the motorcyclists was injured and waiting medical care,

so we had to forgo the laps and headed off to Charleston. We had 27 cars and enjoyed a Horse drawn Carriage ride and great dinner at Poogan’s Porch, where we were joined by Scott and Ame Hornsby, President of the Palmetto region. Maggiano’s

donated a $25 gift card for each car entry! Pictures should be uploaded by the time this gets out. Thank you to everyone who helped, donated money and door prizes and supported this event. We really appreciate everyone.

Special Thanks for financial support, for the Fall Tour to: Paramount Porsche of Hickory for $1500, Carolinas Region for donation of $1500, Maggiano’s restaurant for $400, Black Forrest Garage for Pledging $300, Jem-Clean NCIICRC Oriental Run Cleaners $100, Newsome Tire Service, of Newton $150 and Visions Photography by Colleen $100. We really appreciate these businesses and hope you will support them.

We hope to see you at the Club Race at CMP Oct 29-31st !

Metrolina Area By Don Morris

The Charlotte area Cars and Coffee on October 2nd was another success with over 200 cars there.

I took my first vacation in years and went to Myrtle Beach for a week in October. Got a good swim in the ocean, ate too much food, and didn’t get sun burned. Had a good time.

The Florida Citrus Area held a Drivers Education weekend October 16-17 at Roebling Road Raceway that I attended. The saga of the trailer continues. On the way down while doing 70mph on I-26 a car passes with a sign saying FLAT and pointing at me. So I pulled off and, sure enough, I had a flat. So flat that all the tread was gone. Don’t know how far I went with the flat. It took 45 minutes to change to the spare, and I had to

unload the Boxster to get to the spare. Relocation of the spare is now in progress. Otherwise it was a great weekend on the track. Coming home, there was a massive snarl up on I-26 from a wreck that delayed getting home by about an hour. Next time will hopefully be better,.

The October 29-31 Club Race and DE is at CMP, and I hope to have seen some of it on Sunday. I hope you did also.

Chris Sanders and his wife have revised the membership update database and made it much easier for me to stay in contact with Metrolina members. Thanks Chris and Carolyn.

Keep the sunny side up.

Scott and Sue Jordan took the lead for our 10/2 drive and dine to the Lake Lure Area. We had 21 folks at our 10/2 meeting and 19 of them were able to take the drive. According to Scott, the weather was perfect, traffic was light and lunch at LaStradas was outside on the deck overlooking Lake Lure. Folks lingered and enjoyed the food, views and visiting with fellow PCA members. Thanks Scott and Sue for your efforts in organizing a great day.

For our 11/6 meeting, Beth and Al Aldecoa have planned a drive and dine to Pigeon Forge, TN via some great roads including traveling through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. A visit to a car museum is planned before lunch in Pigeon Forge. Please note, the group will meet at Deal MotorCars in Asheville on Saturday 11/6 at 9 a.m. and depart by 9:15 a.m. (no business meeting that day) for a 4 p.m. return to Asheville. If interested in participating, please RSVP to Beth and Al at 828.665.1393 or at [email protected].

Our Saturday 12/4 meeting will be at Deal MotorCars at 10 a.m. and will feature a tech session and demonstration by BG Products. The tech session will be followed by a Deal MotorCars update on what’s new for 2011 from Porsche, Audi and VW. BG Products is also to buying lunch for our group that day.

Don’t forget Cars and Coffee on the third Saturday of the month from 8:30 - 11 a.m. behind the McDonalds in the parking lot at the Biltmore Square Mall (I-26 and Hwy. 191/Brevard Rd.)

Hope to see you at a future event.

Oktoberfest at Doc’s was a great success! We had at least 75 in attendance, the weather could not have been more perfect, and the food was wonderful. Stephen Brown cooked us a feast of roast pig and all the trimmings. Yum!!! There were several new faces in the crowd and some we hadn’t seen in awhile. I am hoping we will have a similar turn out next month.

If you find you are not receiving emails from me, please drop me a line and I will add you to my list. You can reach me at [email protected] Hope to see you at our November’s meeting.

Sandhills Area By Marty Barrett

September and October are two of the best months we have in the Sandhills to enjoy great weather, great roads and our great Porsches! And, we did!

Several of us participated in the September DE at CMP. With 95 cars, great weather and no incidents it was an excellent weekend at the track; and in the town of Camden we use as our “base camp” for the CMP DE events. The host hotel is The Colony Inn. It is privately owned and has a wonderful little restaurant on the property where we all gather for breakfast...yes, breakfast! I guess you just have to be there to appreciate it. Evenings are spent eating wings, Mexican or at the higher end spots in town. Of course, that’s after a couple of adult beverages at the track...after the last car comes in. Not a bad way to spend the weekend with friends!

On October 2nd we hooked up with the Hurricane PCA Region, and our friends from Triangle Area at Bob Ingram’s fantastic Porsche museum in Durham. There are not enough superlatives to describe his collection of about 40 very special, award winning Porsches. And, Bob, Cam, Jeanie and the rest of the Ingram’s and Roads Scholars folks are perfect hosts! WOW!! Thank you!!

The following Saturday morning we had our local cars & coffee in The Village of Pinehurst. Just as we were about to pull away for a little drive, seven Porsches from the Triangle Area

pulled in to join us. After more coffee and a short drive around Pinehurst we headed for Pittsboro...via the good back roads. Unfortunately, some slow traffic impeded our “spirited driving” but we all ended up at The Soda Shop at the same time. This is an old apothecary shop that has been converted into an ice cream pallor. Wonderful homemade ice cream with all the trimmings.

Coming up is Oktoberfest in Greensboro with the Triad Area. This is an annual event that Jerry Kilcrease and his guys do a super job putting together. Foreign Cars Porsche provides the huge showroom and a great German lunch. The car show and autocross is great fun too! Thanks Traid!

Then over Halloween weekend is the region’s PCA Club Race and solo DE at CMP. You do not have be a club racer to enjoy the spectacle, the sounds, the competition, the car show, a few costumes, etc! We have about 60 racers and 25 solo DE cars signed up so far.

At our September 28 Sandhills dinner meeting we had 14 attendees and some tech tips talk by Jim Hill, one of our members who has owned multiple Porsches and learned some valuable lessons. Our next dinner will be on December 7. This is not our normal schedule due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

The friends who own the Italian Table promise some special holiday treats!

Triad Area By Jerry Kilcrease

It has been a quiet month for local events in the Triad Area. It fact it was quiet for the entire Carolinas Region with the exception of Fall Tour Charleston. However, as we look toward the end of the year, things will really start to get busy especially when we look at the Calendar of Events in Tobacco Roads. So when the Triad Area held it’s October meeting at Big Shotz Tavern in Clemmons, the 46 members and guest in attendance were challenged to sign up for some of the events and join in on the fun and fellowship. We were also pleased to welcome PCA member Sam Jacubowitz as a first time attendee and we all sang Happy Birthday to quite a few members that had celebrated birthdays since our last meeting. The Triad Area also provided the “Birthday” folks with a free desert. Robert Van Camp brought a recent video that he took of a sports car rally while on vacation in Italy. While the video contained mostly vintage Italian sport cars, there were several Porsche 911’s in the mix. Ron Reed showed overhead photographs taken at recent events and Sadie brought a collection of recently stocked PCA and Carolinas Region apparel for members to look over. After the business meeting and announcements, we held a special drawing for door prizes. We had 10 lucky winners of some very nice PCA apparel which was donated by the Triad Area in appreciation to the attending membership for their support over the past year. After everyone finished their dinner, some visited the Goodie Store table while others lingered or moved out to the parking lot to check out the cars.

GIp (Girls in porsches) (Write-up by Sadie Kilcrease) – On October 7 the GIP group met at Mimi’s in the Friendly Center in Greensboro. We met for Brunch at 9:30 and had 8 members in attendance. In addition we had a special guest, Kylie Beane. Kylie is the granddaughter of Art and Randi Weiss. We also had a surprise guest, Hank Carpenter of Foreign Cars Porsche. Hank was in the area and saw the Porsches parked outside. He came inside expecting to find a group of men but instead he found the GIPs having fun.

On November 4 we will meet at Bravo’s located in Friendly Center at 11:30 for lunch. Ladies mark your calendar and come out to visit with the GIPs.

Triangle Area By Bob Kim

On October 2nd, the Triangle Area started the month with a visit to the beautiful car collection of Bob Ingram in Durham, NC. Bob opens the museum to his fellow PCA members every year. This year, the Triangle Area was invited to join the Hurricane Region for this special event, and we would like to thank Kevin Heimbaugh for including us in the fun.

The Ingram Collection is comprised mostly of historic and unique Porsches, like Bob’s one-of-a-kind 550A Spyder. Unfortunately, photos are not allowed. But, those of us who have seen it can attest to how amazing it is. Also, PCA members who haven’t seen the collection yet can rest assured that there will be another opportunity to view the Collection in the future. Bob and his son Rory are very open to an event if we would like to schedule a Triangle Area or Carolinas Region activity at the Collection in the future.

On October 9th, several Triangle Area members drove to scenic Pinehurst, NC to visit with our friend Marty Barrett (Area

Director of the Sandhills Area) and members of the Sandhills Area PCA for Cars & Coffee. Combined, a dozen Porsches drove through the picturesque Pinehurst Plantation and the surrounding area, ultimately ending the tour in Pittsboro. Afterward, we had a delicious lunch at a true old-fashioned soda shop in the historic section of Pittsboro. Thank you to Marty and his members for inviting us, and for a great day. This was our second Triangle-Sandhills Cars & Coffee, and we look forward to doing it again soon.

On October 24th, Triangle Area members visited the Carolinas Oktoberfest in Greensboro hosted by Foreign Cars Europa. The weather was perfect for the occasion, and everyone in attendance enjoyed great cars, friends and food. Several Triangle members were also participated in the Hurricane Region’s Oktoberfest held at Montague Lake in Cary, NC. Again, the food, people and cars made for a great day. Again, thanks go out to Jerry Kilcrease (Area Director of the Triangle Area), and Kevin Heimbaugh (President of the Hurricane Region).

By the time this update is published, we will have attended the Open House and Tech Session at Digital Chassis in Durham – October 30th, 9am-11am. I’ll provide a full update in the next issue of Tobacco Roads.

Our 3rd annual Triangle Area Beaufort, NC Beach Run will be held November 6-7. We have approximately 10 people who will participate in the scenic drive, tour of Beaufort and surrounding areas, and overnight stay at the historic Inlet Inn. Again, the event will have taken place when this issue of TR is published, and I will provide a complete update in the next issue. Special thanks to Jeff Schiff for pulling this event together. As the new

Area Director a few months ago, this was one of the events that members asked me to schedule as soon as possible.

We have almost a dozen Triangle Area members who will participate in the upcoming Carolinas Region Drivers Ed event at Virginia International Raceway, November 19-21. With the help of Dell Tolin (our Sr. Instructor), and Scott Holcomb (Triangle Drivers Ed Lead), we have a wealth of experience and knowledge to ensure that this event is as enjoyable and instructional as possible. Personally, I can’t think of any other event I have done with PCA over the years that has had such a dramatic impact on my enjoyment and understanding of these

amazing cars.

Our next Triangle Area Dinner Meeting was scheduled for November 18th, but I am going to reschedule that meeting to a day earlier in the month. I’ll be sure to send you an update as soon as I have the date and location confirmed.

As always, if you have any suggestions or feedback, please contact me at [email protected]. Or you can call me at (919) 816-6117. I welcome your comments and suggestions. Also, if your e-mail or any other contact information has changed, please be sure to let me know so I can be sure to send you all the latest updates.

Upstate Area By Gene Kendrick

The Upstate Area had great attendance at our October area meeting with 51 members. We were all entertained by tales of overcoming great obstacles at the recent lemons race with two cars fielded by Upstate Area members. We discussed our upcoming area Christmas Party planned for Friday December 10th at the Corvin’s house. We will do our annual charity raffle fundraiser with Col. Shane Tisdale as our auctioneer. Everyone is encouraged to bring an item to be donated to the auction and plenty of cash to bid on what is always an eclectic variety of items.

We are all looking forward to the upcoming Carolina’s Challenge Club Race at Carolinas Motorsports Park Oct 29,30 and 31. We have six Upstate racers currently registered for the race with a number of others supporting the event as Advanced Solo DE participants or volunteer workers during the race weekend. We encourage everyone to turn out for the Region’s premier event.

We also have a good turnout currently registered for the Carolina’s DE at VIR this November. We always have a great time on the track and in the paddock area regardless of the weather. November in Danville, Va can be quite interesting.

Our Area will be selecting a new Area Director to take over in Jan 2011. We have had a good deal of discussion on this topic during the last two monthly meetings. I look forward to seeing everyone at our meeting November 1st.
