Mental Activity

We are going to practise solving problems with more than one step.

We will solve them in our heads.

Main Activity

Today we are going to learn about Carroll diagrams.

Dog No Dog

Who in the class owns a dog?

Complete this Carroll diagram to show that information.

Dog No Dog

We use a Carroll diagram when we want to sort out those that do and those that do not

match whatever we are interested in.

What sort of data could we collect using a Carroll diagram?

Here is one idea.

We could find out who has brothers and sisters and who does not.

Can anyone think of any more categories?

Group WorkThink of some questions that you could ask the children in the other groups. Collect data and show it as a Carroll diagram.

Use Carroll diagrams to record ‘odd’ and ‘not odd’ numbers for multiples of 5 up to 50 and ‘even’ and ‘not even’ numbers for multiples of 3 up to 36.

Working with numbers from 20 to 39, draw Carroll diagrams to show numbers that have three tens and those that don’t and those that are even and those that are not.
