The Red Sox plated two runs in the boom of the third to take the lead and held onto it for the rest of the ballgame. Juan Mota was solid in the start despite taking the loss, surrendering three earned runs over five frames. Luis Jimenez and Dakody Clemmer combined for three innnings of one-run baseball out of the bullpen. Offensively, Steven Kwan went 2-for-2 with a career-high three walks, reaching base safely all three mes he was at the dish. With the loss, the Hillcats and Red Sox split their six-game stretch 3-3, prevenng the Hillcats from gaining any ground on Salem over the course of the week. TROUBLE IN THE CLUTCH: The Hillcats have gone 4-5 over their current road trip, in large part thanks to struggles at the plate with runners in scoring posion. Over the current road swing, Lynchburg is hing just .198 (18-for-91) with runners in scoring posion. Overall, Lynchburg is hing .230 in those situaons this season, ninth in the Carolina League. STATE OF THE RACE: The Hillcats enter this three-game set against the Potomac Naonals sing five games back of Potomac for first place in the Carolina League Northern Division. The Salem Red Sox are just half a game behind Potomac, and the bale for the last playoff spot has turned into a three-team race. The Hillcats and Naonals are each done playing the Red Sox this season, so this upcoming series is the last me these three teams will face off against one another for the rest of the regular season. HIT THE KWAN: Steven Kwan has started to turn things around at the plate. Aſter hing .352 in the month of April, Kwan slowed down significantly in the following months by hing .165 in May, .264 in June, and .229 in July. However, Kwan seems to have found his stroke once again. The outfielder is hing .381 (16-for-42) over his last 10 games and has hit two of his three homers of the season during that span. Kwan is riding a 10-game hing streak and has driven in nine runs over the course of the streak. On Thursday, Kwan went 2-for-2 with a career-best three walks. HIT THE ROAD, JACK: The Hillcats are in the middle of their longest road trip of the season. The 15-game swing will be played over the course of 17 days with trips to Winston-Salem, Salem (twice), Potomac, and Wilmington. Lynchburg will play only one road series following the conclusion of the 15-game road trip, a weekend series at Carolina. So far, the Hillcats are 4-5 over nine games in the road trip. DOUBLES ALLEY: The Hillcats have hit a lot of doubles in the month of August. So far, Lynchburg has collected 18 two-baggers, most in the Carolina League. The Hillcats ripped two doubles on Thursday, geng one each from Jodd Carter and Mitch Reeves. On the season, the Hillcats have the fourth-most doubles in the Carolina League with 198. HILLCATS COACHING STAFF Jim Pankovits Manager (1st Season) Career Record: 1,340-1,357 Pankovits has 16 years of managerial experience under his belt with the Red Sox, Astros, Mariners, and Indians organizaons. 2019 marks Pankovits' second snt in the Carolina League aſter he led the Salem Red Sox from 2006-2008. He enjoyed a Major League career with the Astros and Red Sox as an infielder that spanned six seasons from 1984-1990. Pankovits has managed more than 2,600 games in his minor league career,and picked up his 1,300th career managerial victory on April 21 against Myrtle Beach. Mike Mergenthaler Bench Coach (1st season) 3rd overall 2019 will mark Mergenthaler's first season coaching stateside aſter serving as the hing coach for Cleveland's Dominican Summer League co-op for two seasons. Mergenthaler is no stranger to the Commonwealth, having starred at Richmond in his college days. Johnny Narron Hing Coach (1st season) 9th overall Narron comes to Lynchburg by way of Triple-A Columbus where he served in the same capacity for the Clippers in 2018. Narron is entering his third season in the Indians organizaon and brings Major League coaching experience to the Hillcats' staff aſter serving as the Milwaukee Brewers hing coach from 2012-2014. With the Brewers, he instructed stars such as Ryan Braun, Jean Segura, Aramis Ramirez, and Carlos Gomez. Joe Torres Pitching Coach (1st season) 3rd overall Torres enters his first season with the Hillcats aſter serving as the pitching coach for Lake County in 2018.
