The “hero” in this parable is a dishonest man who cheated his way out of a tough situation. Many commentators think the steward had been overcharging his master’s debtors so that he could take the extra money for himself. So by reducing their debts to reflect the amount they actually owed, the steward not only got rid of the evidence of his wrongdoing, he also won over the debtors. With a reputation for generosity and fair play, he could have had any job he wanted! The prudence that Jesus highlighted in this parable is a matter of skillfully using available resources to accomplish a desired goal. This is the kind of shrewdness that Jesus wants us to take up as well. He’s not asking us to do anything dishonest, of course. But he is asking us to be careful, clever, even calculating as we live in this darkened world. So what are some ways we can be shrewd? How about when dealing with our own sin? We are all capable of justifying ourselves, overlooking sin or explaining it away when we want to. What’s more, the devil likes to capitalize on that tendency, trying to trick us into sin. So be shrewd! Don’t fall into the trap of easy explanations or feeble excuses. Or how about when you want to help someone come to know the Lord? You know that simply talking about the Apostles’ Creed won’t likely win people over. You have to find the right approach, the right words, and the right opportunities to share your faith. And that takes some strategizing as well as careful thought and prayer. It takes learning how to be “all things to all” people (1 Corinthians 9:22). Being shrewd and prudent is the best way to build the kingdom. So may we all learn from today’s “dishonest steward”—without becoming dishonest ourselves! “Jesus, help me to find creative ways to grow closer to you and to share your love. he master commended that dishonest steward for acting

prudently.” (Luke 16:8) That’s right. The “hero” in this parable is a dishonest man

who cheated his way out of a tough situation.

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PARISH HIGHLIGHTS

The universal Church observed the Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, on Saturday, September 21. That day was joyfully celebrated as a solemnity here at St. Matthew’s, with music (cantor and organ) at the 12:10pm Mass.

Our parish family also celebrates the Feast of St. Matthew as a solemnity with special readings and prayers at today’s (Sunday’s) 11:30am and 1pm (Spanish) Masses. We invite you to continue the celebration at Hospitality receptions in the North Conference Room following all Sunday Masses and the 5:30pm Vigil Mass on September 21. Other highlights are our Ministry Fair being held at the Hospitality receptions, and a series of evening reflections, beginning this evening at 7:30pm, in the Cathedral by Jesuit Father Gerard Stockhausen as part of our Parish Mission (see the flyer).

Jesus’ calling of Matthew to discipleship, which is the subject of the Gospel reading for the Feast of St. Matthew at the 11:30am and 1pm Masses today, is depicted in the mural in the west transept of the Cathedral (shown in part above) entitled The Calling

of St. Matthew—take a moment and take a look !

FAITH FORMATION

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? – Throughout the year, adults come forward seeking to learn about the Catholic faith. For those who are interested in learning about the Catholic faith or thinking about becoming Catholic, St. Matthew’s offers Inquiry, a casual, ongoing conversation about the Catholic faith, once a month. Inquiry is the first step in the process of discerning one’s commitment to full initiation in the Catholic Church. Inquiry meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the East Conference Room. A brief overview of the entire adult initiation process (RCIA), which begins formally in June each year, can be presented after Inquiry for those who are interested. The next Inquiry will be held Wednesday, October 9. For more information, contact Heather Kinney at [email protected].

NEWS AND NOTES

SACRAMENTAL LIFE AT ST. MATTHEW’S – Last month parishes shared statistics with the Archdiocese regarding their finances and sacramental life. I thought you might be interested in seeing some of these figures. The number of marriages this past year is of particular interest—99 weddings took place here, but that figure does not include the many couples who our clergy prepared for marriage but were wed elsewhere. Fr. Rafael and I spend hours each week with our couples, and we love it! Time consuming, yes, but so rewarding! It is very special to receive a request for a baptism, or a surprise visit (often with children in tow) from a couple with whom I have worked at some point during my 18 years here. Yes, we are a sacramentally and spiritually vibrant parish! ̶Msgr. Jameson RED MASS – The 61st Annual Red Mass will be held at the Cathedral on Sunday, October 6 at 10am. The John Carroll Society hosts the Red Mass for its members and guests, including many government officials with attendant security. It is open to the public, but attendance by the Society’s members and guests is very high. If you normally attend the 10am Mass, you may wish to consider attending another Mass that weekend. Please note that the 8:30am

Mass is cancelled that day. If you plan to attend the Red Mass, please arrive early as the fire marshal will not allow entry once the Cathedral is filled to capacity. Thank you for helping us extend the Cathedral’s hospitality to the John Carroll Society for this celebration.

YOUNG ADULTS C†YA at Mass Weekly on Sundays – 5:30pm – Cathedral – Don’t sit alone at Mass! Instead, celebrate with other young adult parishioners. Join us in the first few rows on the right of the nave, in front of the pulpit near the choir – look for the “reserved” signs on the pews. Contact: Lara [email protected].

C†YA for Hospitality and the Ministry Fair – Sunday, September 22 – after 5:30pm Mass – North Conference Room – Hospitality returns after a summer vacation! This month will feature the parish Ministry Fair, so it’s a perfect time to learn more about the many ministries and programs at the Cathedral and get involved. Or, just stop by for snacks and fellowship with other young adults and parishioners. Contact: Eileen at [email protected].

Dios y Señor y quiero pertenecerte y serte fiel

todos los días de mi vida. Ayúdame, Señor, a

dinero.” Escogida con el permiso de La Palabra Entre Nosotros, Vol.

MARRIAGE

Couples who are inter-ested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at 202-347-3215 and ask for the priest of your choice or the priest on duty, who can speak to you about marriage preparation and the possibility of scheduling your wedding ceremony at the Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us at least nine (9) months in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding.

BAPTISM

Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator at the Rectory at 202-347-3215 x555 or baptism@ stmatthewscathedral.org. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, at which time they may ask for the priest of their choice to perform the Baptism. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor.
