Leverage The Power Of You By Jennifer Bourn

FFFF or entrepreneurs, coaches, and consultants, YOU are your business. You are your most valuable asset. You are what makes your product or ser-

vice different from every other like it. You are the magic behind your brand and when you have total clarity about what you are offering, why you are offering it, and who you are offering it to, you will gain more clients, more money, and more freedom. Branding, the strategy behind your brand and how it is positioned in the market is no longer optional. Branding is what separates those struggling to achieve success and those enjoying wild success. It is the difference between chasing clients and being chased by clients. It's what moves you from simply being another choice to being the ONLY choice. There are three key strategies you need to create a powerful, personal, profitable brand:

1. Differentiate Yourself And Stand Out YOU are the biggest differentiator in your business. Your unique gifts, tal-ents, and skills, combined with your innate brilliance and life experience create an undeniable force of value. Own your brilliance, honor your gifts, and share your magic with others. When you do, you'll truly begin to change the world.

2. Communicate A Crystal Clear Message When you are crystal clear about what you are offering, why you are offering it, and who you are offering it to, your audience will enjoy the same clarity. They will see the value you deliver, understand what your genius work is, and know exactly who your ideal client is. As a result, you will receive more referrals and attract more new clients with grace and ease.

YOU Are Your

Business!

3. Create An Emotional Connection With Your Ideal Clients Almost all buying decisions are based on emotions, connections, and feel-ings, so it's imperative that you get personal with your brand! You are your brand and your audience wants to get to know you. Share your personality, your story, and your opinions. Share your experiences, your successes, and your struggles. Give your audience every opportunity to connect with you, resonate with you, and invest in you personally, and trust me, inviting them to then invest with your business will flow naturally.

If you're ready to be the only choice, to enjoy clients chasing you and clamoring to work with you, it's time to take action and transform your business into an extraordi-nary and lucrative brand … and I can help! Visit www.bourncreative.com to learn more. Jennifer Bourn is the brand strategist, WordPress website designer, and graphic designer behind the award-winning branding and web design firm Bourn Creative, LLC near Sac-ramento, California. Nancy’s Butternut Squash SoupNancy’s Butternut Squash Soup

By Nancy NewcomerBy Nancy Newcomer The holidays are my favorite time of the year. All the fun festivities, celebrations and decorations leading up to Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years evoke vivid childhood memories. I remember coming home for dinner after playing outside for hours with the neighborhood kids. The feeling of warmth on my cold, rosy cheeks as I walked inside the house was wonderful. The smells from the kitchen were pure heaven. My mom put a homemade family dinner on the table every night. It always tasted great, especially after working up an appetite from an afternoon of running around with my friends. This time of year brings back those days and inspires me to get in the kitchen and cook up my own tasty, hearty dishes. Roasted root veggies, pumpkin bread, pot roast, pies, soups and stews. Let’s break out the crock pot and pressure cooker! So many choices, where do I begin? And then there’s Thanksgiving and Christmas to think about. Even if you “don’t cook” and all of this sounds overwhelming, no wor-ries. There are always fun, simple things you can make that don’t take a lot of time and also make you look pretty cool in the kitchen. Here’s one of my favorites ~ easy enough for an everyday meal but so beautiful, it’s worthy of Grandma’s bone china soup tureen on your Thanksgiving or Christmas table. Enjoy and Happy Holidays! Nancy’s Butternut Squash Soup (non-dairy & gluten free) Ingredients: * 2 TB olive oil * 1/2 small onion chopped * 1 med yukon gold potato peeled & cubed * 1 large butternut squash, peeled, seeded, & cubed * 4 cups chicken broth * ¼ cup fresh orange juice * 1 tsp sea salt * 1/2 tsp nutmeg * Sprigs of parsley for garnish

TodaysInnovativeWoman.com 9

Directions: 1. Sautee onion, potatoes, & squash in olive oil until slightly browned. 2. Transfer into soup pot and add enough broth to cover veggies. 3. Bring to a boil and the lower to a simmer for 30-40 min–until veggies are soft. 4. Let cool off a little and either use a blender “wand” OR just throw into a blender to puree until smooth. Add orange juice and stir in. 5. Pour back into pot and add as much of the remaining chicken broth for the con-sistency you prefer. 6. I like mine a little on the thicker side. Reheat to barely a boil. Ready to serve garnish with parsley sprinkles. Longtime Santa Barbara radio personality, Nancy Newcomer is a food blogger and an accomplished cook & creator of simple, healthy meals made from fresh, organic ingredients. With an emphasis on gluten free fare and local farmer’s mar-ket bounty, her Facebook food blog, “Back to the Kitchen: Healthy Living with Real Food” is followed by people in over 22 countries. Check out Nancy’s new website, www.NancyNewcomer.com where she shares recipes & shopping tips and continues to advocate cooking “real food “ recipes and having sit down family dinners.

Write for More RevenueWrite for More RevenueWrite for More RevenueWrite for More Revenue By Caterina Rando, MA, MCC

AAAA ll entrepreneurs, since the first baker and candlestick maker, have faced the same challenge--how to get the word out to people who might want

to do business with them. We all know that no matter how good your product or ser-vice is, no one can utilize it if they do not know it exists. Unless you have a huge advertising budget, you are probably wondering what you can do to effectively draw clients to you. The answer is simple: All you have to do is sit down and write.

Follow these strategies to get your ideas down on paper and watch your profits go up. Pay Attention to Your Clients Even if you know writing can serve you and your business, you might not be sure what to write about. By listening to the questions that your clients ask over and over, you can identify the issues that everybody wants to know about. Keep a list; and when you are ready to write, review it for ideas. Start with Quick Tips If you do not think you are much of a writer, you may want to start by writing a helpful list of something that you know about but your clients might not. I call these quick tip sheets. You might title your sheet “25 quick tips to organize your office” or “7 ways to reduce your stress.” Underneath your title you sim-ply write out your ideas.

Articles To turn a quick tip sheet into an article, all you need to do is write an explanation or an example underneath each quick tip. Add an opening paragraph that states what problem your article solves, add a paragraph at the bottom that tells the reader to apply what they have read--and you have a completed article. Use Articles Over and Over Once you write an article or a quick tip sheet, you want to use it over and over. Send it out to other publications that might be interested in it. Send it to members of the media, current clients and potential clients with a cover letter that says, “In case you missed my article in XYZ publication, here is a copy for you.” Articles give valuable information to your potential clients and can do more for your business than advertising, publicity or direct mail. An article lives as long as it contin-

STOP THE MARKETING MADNESS! 7 Essentials for Complete Marketing Success! Part 1 By Cathy Alessandra

AAAA s a magazine publisher, I’ve been in the business of marketing others businesses for the last 16 years plus marketing my own business! And

during that time I’ve learned A LOT ABOUT SUCCESSFUL MAREKTING – what works and what is a waste of time. I began publishing my first magazine 16 years ago and not only did I need to market myself to potential advertisers and readers but my job was to market my advertisers to my readers as well. Many people believe that marketing is just about advertising or sales. However, marketing is EVERYTHING a company does to acquire customers and maintain a relationship with them. The ultimate goal of marketing is to match a company’s products and services to the people who need and want them per Investopedia. Your complete marketing plan must be a multi-prong approach. It must encompass multiple avenues of exposure for compete success. I believe in 7 essentials for total marketing success, and over the next few issues of Today's Innovative Woman, I am going to share them with you. The 1st business essential is your online presence. In this day and age, your website is critical. It serves as a first impression. How many of us hear of a person, product or service and immediately Google it? Why do you think dictionary.com lists Google as both a noun and a verb? Because we Google it and click to your website to get a sense of your legitimacy. We want to connect with you, your products and your services, read about you and your experience, sign-up for your free offer if you have one. Have you ever gone to someone’s website and found a do-it-yourself looking site? Or maybe you come across a blog with the last post 6 months ago? Or an outdated products or events page. We are in the age of the internet and your website tells your potential clients about you, your professionalism and what they can expect from you. A poorly done or out of date site tells them they can’t expect

much! Your website is really the welcome mat to your business – and an old worn out welcome mat is going to leave them questioning what’s on the other side of the door. Your marketing strategy needs a website that en-gages your visitors. Give them information, have a video, give them free resources or a free report to experience you. Your website doesn’t have to cost $1000’s, but if you invest the money the 1st time around, it will save you $100’s in headaches and make you $1000’s of dollars with opt-ins, product sales and more . Interview a few design-ers – have some samples of what you are want-

Joy Chudacoff: One Smart Woman

JJJJ oy became an entrepreneur by accident nearly 20 years ago because she had a de-

sire to earn an extra $500 per month to cover the rent her roommate was paying so she could ask her to move out of her apartment. "I was 29 years old and feeling the need for more independence and having that apartment all to myself was the first big step." At the time, Joy was working as a marketing and business consultant in the medical field in Los Angeles and after minimal research, she decided to start a medical equipment company. Fast forward 10 years; the part-time business Joy started to earn an extra $500 per month grew to be an international com-pany with annual sales approaching $2 million dollars. But there was more going on in Joy's life, not all of it planned. When Joy was 37, her husband Greg had to undergo a kidney transplant. He was seriously ill for several years. Running a million dollar company while caring for her husband proved to be challenging and exhausting. When his health improved, Joy had a big realization: "I had lost my passion for the business. I felt drained and burned out." To add to the confusion, she was now in her late 30’s and had a desire to start a family. When Joy was 40 years old, she became pregnant with her son and at the same time began an entrepreneurial transformation that would lead her to where she is today as founder of Smart Women Smart Solutions®. "I began to feel a calling to take my journey as a woman business owner and share it with other women who had a desire for more in their lives. I knew that the passion for my medical equipment and nutritional products company was gone. It was a lifestyle that required lots of travel and I was at a place in my life where I wanted to have a flexible business so I could enjoy motherhood." While her children were just toddlers, Joy went back to school and obtained her coaching certification and launched Smart Women Smart Solutions® which offers proven, time-tested solutions for women who desire to live pur-poseful lives and create businesses fueled by their dreams. It began as a start-up company nearly 7 years ago designed to help women use the transi-tions in their lives as an opportunity to realize their dreams. It gave Joy the

All About The Law Does Your Staff Own Your Intellectual Property? By Jessica Eaves Mathews

DDDD o you work with independent contractors in your business? Independent contractors include anyone who is not a full-fledged employee (meaning

someone on your payroll and to whom you likely pay benefits). An independent contractor can include Virtual Assistants, Web Designers, Copywriters or Ghostwrit-ers, Bookkeepers, Videographers or Photographers, just to name a few. If you work with independent contractors, as many of us do, did you know that you might have some serious intellectual property issues lurking in the work product those staff members have created for you? When I say “work product” I mean sales pages, brochures, website copy, logos, videos created for you, white papers, ebooks or even books! The reality is that you might not even own the copyright in your own materials like website design, website copy or even articles, blog posts or ebooks! Do I have your attention now? Good, because it is a very critical issue that you need to take care of right away. Here is what you need to know. The default rule in the United States under the Copyright Act is that the independent contractor owns the copyright in anything they do on your behalf, unless the following requirements are met: (1) The work must come within one of the following nine limited categories of works: (a) a contribution to a collective work, (b) a part of a motion picture or other audiovisual work, (c) a translation, (d) a supplementary work, (e) a compilation, (f) an instructional text, (g) a test, (h) answer material for a test, or (i) an atlas; and (2) The work must be specially ordered

or commissioned; and (3) There must be a written agreement between the parties specifying that the work is a work made for hire. Clear as mud? Yeah, I agree. So, I think the best rule of thumb is to not risk being wrong in how you categorize your work product or your staff member. Instead, I recommend taking a careful and systematic approach that will avoid almost all is-sues in the future relating to the ownership rights of work product for your company.

TodaysInnovativeWoman.com 17

That approach is very simple. You need a “work-for-hire” provision in your agree-ments with anyone you hire to do work on your behalf. It should very clearly state that the person doing the work for you has been hired by you to do so, and that you own all ownership and intellectual property rights in the work product as soon as the product is created. To be clear, you should have even employees sign this, just to be sure there is no debate about that fact that you own all legal and intellectual property rights in any work that person does for you. If you have questions about this or need assistance drafting a proper work-for-hire provision, reach out to us at [email protected].

The Best Fitness Advice I Can Give You By JJ Flizanes If you had to ask me what the best fitness advice was it would be to find compliance. For me and many of my clients and friends, that means SCHEDULING it.

Are there better exercises for each of us to be doing? Yes. Are there more effective ways to change your body fat than some of the methods you are cur-rently using? Yes. But the bottom line for a lot of us, is DOING IT and DOING IT CONSISTENTLY. How do you do that? Usually the most effective way to get it done is to pay for it. Hire a trainer or a coach or join a group class. I understand not all of us can do that however, but it really is the best choice to get moving and have some positive results. The second is to SCHEDULE it. Sounds simple, yes? But even I have had an issue with this in the last 10 months. I lost my workout partner last year ( she moved) and since then it has been hard to find someone else with

6 Tips to Maximize and Soothe Your Voice! By Deborah Genovasi

I’ve shared these tips with many people over the years and know they’ll be helpful for many of you who are doing tele-seminars, radio shows, and public speaking. My specialty is communications and branding, especially media and speaker training. I started as a TV reporter and moved into corporate PR for the last 15+ years at major, international PR agencies in New York, Cleveland and Los Angeles. Because of that, I wanted to share a few tips on how to make your voice sound best during teleclasses and radio shows. The tips are invaluable if you have a cold or allergies but they work well before any speaking engagement. I learned these when I was a TV reporter and found them helpful when doing voiceover work too. I actually reported on-camera with bad colds and even once with pneumonia (not recommended!) and you could barely tell because I used these tips! Before you speak you may want to:

1. Green Apple: Eat a crisp green apple right before you go on. They are slightly acidic and clear out all the “stuff” from your vocal chords. Voice-over studios often have bowls of these around for just this reason. 2. Nasal Spray: Use a few sprays of decongestant nasal spray to clear your sinuses right before you go on. 3. No Dairy: Avoid dairy for several hours before a performance. It promotes mucus in your throat—which sounds disgusting and forces you to keep clearing your throat. 4. Hot Tea: When possible, keep very warm (preferably decaf) tea with lemon by your side and sip it often, as you are speaking. Warm lemon water works too. 5. Hydrate: In general, remember to HYDRATE—early and often! Your voice is like your skin—much prettier when you make a habit of drinking lots of water, especially when you are in a situation where you are talking a lot. And alcohol is not your friend at a cocktail party, FYI. It tends to dry out the throat and dehydrate you. Have a drink or two but alternate with water. 6. Breathe Deeply: You also may want to inhale some euca-lyptus oil to open up your breathing passages. In a pinch, a menthol lozenge will help. You may not smell great but you will sound great! Hope that is helpful to you. Now go on and put your best voice out there!

How to Feel Beautiful from the Boardroom to the Bedroom By Kirin Christianson

I have to confess a teeny tiny secret to you....I’ve never felt more ugly in my life than when I was working as a full time model. Maybe it’s because modeling is one of the biggest rejection in-dustries around. But then if you are in sales, you know first hand that sales is one of the biggest rejection industries around. Perhaps it’s because I was working so much there was-n’t a lot of “me” time. But when you are an entrepreneur, there isn’t much “you time” either. Or maybe it’s because at the end of the day regardless of who you are, or what your “job” is, regard-less of how many roles you play, and regardless of how you choose to spend your life....since you are a woman, you have a hard time FEELING beautiful.

So here are 3 quick and easy tips on how you can instantly feel beautiful - no matter what. 1) Wear a bright color. You know, bright colors not only brighten your outlook, they even brighten your face - making you look younger and more rested. When you are wearing bright colors (especially the right colors for you) you get compliments, your skin glows, your eyes sparkle and your skin looks clearer. 2) Eat something FABULOUS! This doesn’t mean eat the most decadent chocolate in the world. It means eating something that makes your body feel amazing! Usually it’s good food that has some healthy fats. For

me, it’s a “Beauty Juice” of carrots, celery, tomatoes, spinach and blueberries. (I can’t even believe I just admitted that drinking veggies makes me feel better than chocolate!) 3) Read your compliment journal. This is either your handwritten or electronic journal where you write out all of the compliments people give you. First of

all, it makes you stop and accept a compliment when you receive one. And secondly, you’ll learn something new about yourself based on what types of compliments you are most often receiving. Spend just 5 minutes reviewing what other people have to say about you, and you’ll be glowing in no time! You don’t need to look like a model or wait until you loose 20 pounds. You are fabulous RIGHT NOW and you have what it takes to look, feel and BE beauti-ful! And if you ever have any questions or need a little guidance, I’m here for you. You can do it! Red Haute Mama, Kirin Christianson, lifts women from the doldrums of everyday and back into the ‘va va va voom.’ She helps them uncover their discover their inner bombshell. All About Copy Writing

3 Ways Your Website Can Be A Money Making Machine By Lisa Manyon

YYYY our website is one of your most powerful marketing tools. If it isn’t building relationships, getting clients and making money there really isn’t a reason to

have an online presence. At the same time having a website is not all it takes to succeed online. When creating an online presence there are three foundational marketing pieces that I recommend. These core components are essential to creating a successful marketing plan and succeeding online. I’ve found that having just one of these in place is not enough.

1. Your Copywriting Action Plan determines what you need to write. It’s where you outline the content you need and plan the creation of your content (you’ll also want to be familiar with copywriting tips and techniques to truly connect with your ideal clients).

2. Your Content Strategy Plan (this is how you’ll strate-gically use your copy to reach your business goals and create your Internet marketing editorial calendar and be-yond).

3. Your Publicity Plan (or a press release strategy and this should be a regular part of your efforts not a fly-by-night — hit or miss attempt) to help you spread your word and get the recognition you deserve.

BUT, before you’re ready to move beyond the big picture of your Copywriting Action Plan to create your Content Strategy Plan and ultimately your Publicity Plan, you’ll need to make sure your website is REALLY working for you. There are three ways your website can really become a money making ma-chine and it all hinges on the clarity of your copy. 1. Create a clear pathway to build relationships online ( Hint: If you are not requesting that your website visitors take action, chances are you have a static, bro-chure relationship and that’s a waste of money).

2. Get clients by continuing the relationship online so they know, like and trust you and move on to the next step.(Hint: make sure you have a clear strategy in

(Continued on page 25)

TodaysInnovativeWoman.com 25

place for continued communication and added value).

3. Connect with clients so they’ll invest in your products and services and you’ll ultimately make money (Hint: provide high value content and information and clearly tell people how they can work with you).

If your website is missing any of the three foundations to a functional website it’s time to carefully review your web flow and your copy. Nancy Hirschman [email protected] Serving North Orange County, California Welcome, I am Nancy (Hirschman) Venditti Mueller, President of New Beginnings With Nancy. I am a published author and motivational speaker. The most amazing aspect about my busi-ness is watching how a woman’s life can change when she real-izes her Inner Strength while reaching her potential. My journey has also allowed me to write my current book titled Chocolate or Vanilla, Life Is All About Choices. a similar schedule, desire and fitness level to replace her. Having a workout partner is great to keep you on track for just DOING the exer-cise. Schedule it in your day, put it in your calendar, let others know you are UN-AVAILABLE and then commit to it. I really get bothered when fitness people want to tell the couch potato who hasn’t committed to ANY movement in months or even years, to go do HIGH INTEN-SITY INTERVAL TRAINING!! Ah, Hello???? That MIGHT last a few weeks ( most likely not–unless they paid for it) and then that person reverts back to their old habits because they stepped TOO FAR out of their comfort zone too soon. My best fitness advice is to DO something and DO IT OFTEN. Once fitness be-comes part of your regular life 2-5 times a week and you sustain it for longer than 3 months, THEN we can modify WHAT you are doing and stop wasting time throwing out options of things you are most likely NOT going to do for long. Take out your pen and calendar, get ready to email a few friends and SCHEDULE yourself a workout date. Have some fun why don’t you?

All About The Office

HELPHELPHELPHELP—The Other 4 Letter Word By Bibi Goldstein

Most entrepreneurs think their main focus should be about getting customers then about getting more customers. What most of us don't factor in or think we can do ourselves is all the other administrative work and customer service that is required in maintaining those clients. Or even the idea of what the next steps are once we have a client ready to work with us. It is often difficult for many small business owners to ask for help, believe me I know I'm one of them. All of us know how important it is to delegate and yet if you ask any of your peers what they find most difficult in their business or even life in general, delegation is most likely at the top of their list. Add being a woman and HELP really does become a four letter word we don't want to utter. One of my big discoveries during the last five years of specifically working with clients and creating systems to assist them with the proc-ess of delegating is how prevalent trust must be. This is similar to many other relationships in that when you have been let down or burned in the past, it is that much harder to let it go the next time. Whether you're a business owner, work in the corporate world or an active parent in your community remember that everyone could use a little help. There is a great way for you to determine where you could use that help; it will take a little effort and about a week. - Get a little notebook that you can put on your desk, in your pocket or in your purse - Use a single sheet to document a task or errand you are about to do or just did - make sure the day and time is noted - At the end of the week make 3 stacks with your sheets - Love to do - Need to do - Would rather poke my eyes out than do That last stack will be what you start delegating. Business owners; this will be very important as you sit at your desk and begin this documentation process that you are looking at overall tasks, try not to get too de-

tailed until you've determined what you're going to delegate. Again, regardless of your need for help there are so many opportunities for assis-tance, especially virtually. Be diligent in deciding who you work with. They need to be a partner and feel as invested in what they are doing for you as you do. They won't be perfect, but they should know your expectations as a member of your team. Whatever you do and whomever you ask for help, always be specific and do it in writing whenever possible. When you're working with someone virtually try and schedule weekly "huddles", a quick 15 minute telephone call or video chat to review the previous week and what's coming up this week. Help Enables Life's Passions. Enjoy what you do and give the rest to someone else to do. ing, what you want it to say about you. Along with your website and that opt-in box you have on it, comes essential #2 – email marketing and even direct mail marketing. Your potential clients need to be getting regular correspondence from you in their inbox and their mailbox. And not just junky self-promotional email, but high content, high value correspon-dence. For email marketing, you have so many options. Many of the companies even offer a free trial – or free up to a certain number of emails. But no matter what your business is, whether online coaching, a multi-level marketing program or art classes for kids, email marketing costs next to nothing and allows you that regular consistent contact. It gives you a chance to build the know, like and trust factor with quality information. Direct mail can be another cost effective way to reach your clients and potential customers. Collect mailing addresses with the opt-in box on your website—it doesn’t need to be a required information – it can be optional lines, but most of the time, they will put their full address. This is a great marketing option that is making a comeback. We get so much mail in our email inbox that sending a direct mail piece is another way to be seen and remembered. And it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are many postcard printing companies online – full color postcards printed for pennies. Send a postcard once or twice a year, or a flyer, or even a holiday card! Upload your mailing list and for a small fee, those postcard companies will print the address and mail it. Or order the postcards and then have your teenager make some cash by putting on the mailing labels! I’ll continue with my 7 marketing essentials in the next issue! Again, I don’t believe you should do just one of these 7—I believe you need to do a little bit of all of them. Until next issue….. Cathy is the CEO of What’s Up For Kids and Today’s Innovative Woman. savvy entrepreneur women. In 2011, Cathy published the first issue of To-day’s Innovative Woman filled with articles from business tips and resources to food, fashion, and fun! Cathy was awarded the 2011 Top 50 Momprenuer
